• Is this a subreddit where one can submit drafts of one's plays or scenes for proofreading. If so, what are the rules, including formatting, fonts, line spaces, etc? Of course, you don't have to answer here. If there's a link where I can find those sort of FAQ questions, please link to them if you can.
• If this is not a forum where one can post drafts for proofreading, can you recommend free ones apart from ReadMyPlay or whatever it's called. I Know Read My Play requires you to submit you post a play which is of your authorship and belongs to you in order to become a member. The current play I'm working on is my first one, so I have nothing to show them.
• Recommending websites where I can show my play at a membership price may be well-intentioned, but they come with the caveat that the economy here is a catastrophe and both me and my family have other needs.

If all else fails, and it may be that some of you would be interested in an 18-page comedy draft of a first scene, don't hesitate to holler.

It's all in the title! I've got poets, fantasy writers, people who write non-fiction prose for friends but no one who's really interested in theatre and I've been looking for someone to read for, who could read my stuff as well for some time now.

My local library doesn’t have much beyond Shakespeare and Arthur Miller. I know Libby is an option, but their selection is also based on what’s most popular, and I’m looking for more niche stuff, more recent stuff, not just the classics.

Forgive me if this is answered by an FAQ, but I've written a play. It's complete, and more or less ready to go.

Now, it's not perfect, sure. But what's the next step? Am I supposed to reach out to theatre producers directly? Is there a play publishing house? What exactly is the "next step" once the play is actually written?

I have this meta-theatrical play idea and I’m not sure where to take it

I’m a first-time playwright developing a 35–40 minute one-act play for a theater festival, and I’d like some feedback on the concept because I can’t genuinely decide.

The basic premise:
A playwright hears an announcement for a playwriting festival and begins creating a play. He chooses people from the audience to become his characters and assigns them roles: a Main Character, Lover, Sidekick, Rich, Poor, and the Eye/Authority.
MC and Lover are from a Poor family
Sidekick from Rich

At first, they simply follow his script. But as the story progresses, they start questioning their roles:

The Lover doesn’t want to simply be the hero’s “shadow.” Symbolizing women who are reduced to supporting roles

The Sidekick wants recognition beyond the role assigned to him, his sexuality also connects him to LGBT discrimination.

The Poor - central question is not merely how to survive, but when he gets to actually live.

The Rich doesn’t want to be reduced to a stereotype.

The Eye/Authority, initially just a puppet enforcing the script, eventually becomes aware enough to being the first character to confront the Playwright.

The Playwright doesn’t see himself as evil. He genuinely tries to fix their problems by rewriting the story, but his solutions still don’t satisfy them because he’s still deciding what is best for them.
Eventually, the Playwright breaks down, and his tears symbolically cause a flood across the manuscript. While the Main Character goes to confront him, the other characters deal with the flood themselves. (A reference to the flood control issue here)
The Playwright finally starts listening to them rather than simply rewriting them. They begin working toward a new story together.

Then an alarm goes off:
“And that is 40 minutes! Our maximum time given!”
The Playwright argues that he hasn’t finished the ending. Finally, he gives the Pencil, which represents power, to the audience. To remind that the audience, the people has the power. Asking “what will you do now

The one above, or The flood drowns all the other characters to signify the lives taken by the real actual flood. I don’t know even know what the mc and playwright we’ll talk about during that confrontation.

Hello! I was wondering what people use to write their plays. I have heard Google Docs, WriterDuet, and Arc Studios from screenwriters, but I don't know about playwriting.

In this scene they are trying to convince their friend to return to help them in a high stakes competition after a previous disaster at the last one.

Would it be better to have SANDRA stay on stage and have NATHAN show how anxious and nervous he’s getting by wondering if BRETT will help or her leaving the stage after waiting for him to pick up the phone is fine and coming back for him to react. Nathan is the anxious friend, while Sandra is more level headed and grounding friend in the group.

“SANDRA. We can do this, stop doubting yourself…(pulls out phone and calls Brett.Phone rings a few times before BRETT answers). Brett. It’s Sandra, sit down, I’ve got news …(SANDRA exits stage left, voice trails off.)

Beat.

(Nathan sits at the table going over the forms highlighting and writing. Sandra enters after her phone call with Brett. The conversations about the playwright contest continue.)

NATHAN. (Still writing looking down at the forms) Well what did he have to say, tell me he’s coming.”

Do you multiply submit for workshop opportunities? If so, do you just let theater companies know you're doing this? Do you put a limit on how far a theater company is from you when considering workshops and submissions for productions?

I have entered a play into a large national playwriting competition, but realized 2 days after the deadline that I entered the wrong draft. I'd rather not be judged on that draft - does anyone have experience with withdrawing from a competition? Is it usually possible? I'm assuming they wouldn't accept the "correct" draft after the deadline, since there would be an issue with fairness.

I've emailed them already, but it's the weekend, so I'll try to call on Monday.

I've been enjoying writing 10 minute plays and would like to incrementally write longer and longer pieces. Looking at outlining techniques isn't really working for me (just spiritually, I find it boring if I haven't started a project...), so I'd like to study some 30 minute plays for now and then maybe look into some long-form story development classes to help me attempt a full-length play.

Got any juicy recs for me? I do have NPX if that helps! It can take a while to sift through.

When you’re either brainstorming for play ideas or writing drafts on paper, what do your notes/notebooks like? Sometimes I can struggle with continuing to keep a continuous writing notebook so I’d love to see others’! Aesthetic or not

So... Ive been working on this script for a bit and I seem to have created a mini epic. My current play sits at 177 pages and it'll go up a bit more before I finish this draft. Without knowing anything about the play, will this ever be considered for production? I know I need to drop the page count. The question is how much? I am working on it, just unsuccessfully.

I’m looking for a play with a major male anti-hero or villain role that would be interesting to perform.

Ideally:

• 2–3 person cast, though up to 5 is fine
• Male character with a playing age somewhere around 18–39
• A genuine anti-hero, morally dark protagonist, or compelling villain
• Complex and layered rather than simply evil
• Grounded in reality and psychologically believable rather than highly stylized or fantastical
• Dark drama, psychological thriller, or black comedy

The role doesn’t have to be the lead, just substantial enough to really dig into as an actor.

I’m open to contemporary or older plays, famous or obscure. Would especially love recommendations for specific characters, not just play titles.

I usually write fiction and poetry, but lately I've been wanting to dive into the world of playwriting. If anyone here can guide me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Some context: I live in a small city in Pakistan, so access to an actual theatre is almost impossible.

Firstly, what should I start writing first? As in, a monologue, a short play, or a full-length?

Secondly, will it help greatly I go and watch an actual stage production? I'm asking because I will have to travel quite a bit for that. If watching recordings online will suffice initially, I would want to avoid a trip to another city.

Thirdly, are there any resources that you would recommend for me? Or any advice that you think might be helpful?

I have always had the idea rolling in the back of my mind to try to write a one person show/solo show. I want it to be autobiographical because I want to share things I’ve learned from my life (lots of things happened) but I am trying to figure out how to format or how to write without making it sound like rambling my journal entries at an audience. I know there has to be some sort of structure - like who am I talking to, why am I telling this story, etc. I was looking to see what advice people have (everything I’ve found online is basically just write and edit which I get but how do I figure out the structure part)

Or additionally, if you know any one person plays/solo shows I can find to read to get ideas that would be helpful as well.

I am an nyc based playwright. I have published 2 plays in smaller anthologies. I have spent the better part of 2 years writing a one act play. Roughly 90 minutes long. My play has been accepted into a festival for the winter. The idea of the festival is to self produce a production rather than a developmental reading, but they provide the theater, props/sets/ lighting and sound systems, etc. I have an idea of how things work but I have zero experience with a production outside of being in the ensemble in my school musicals. I know I need a stage manager, director, actors, lighting, sound, also a choreographer because there is one dance sequence. My budget is essentially non-existent so most positions will be unpaid. I there anyone important positions I'm unaware about? What are the best avenues to find people to do unpaid work?
