Hey everyone, I'm about to start my 3rd year of computer science and I've been thinking a lot about what direction to take.
A bit about my background: I genuinely enjoy the math side of my degree, especially after taking a statistics course, and I'm broadly interested in finance, stocks, and how markets work in general. Because of that, a career in quant finance seems like a natural fit.
That said, I'm also genuinely interested in cybersecurity — I follow privacy/security news, breaches, and attack techniques pretty regularly, and there's a chance I'll land an internship in the industry. So honestly, both paths appeal to me, not just from a money perspective — it's more about which one is more viable where I am.
Important constraint: I don't plan to relocate. I want to stay in Warsaw.
From what I can tell, quant opportunities in Warsaw are pretty limited compared to cybersecurity, which is much more established here. But quant still feels like the more interesting path to me, so I wanted to ask:
- How realistic is a quant career in Warsaw/Poland specifically? Are there firms or roles I might be overlooking?
- Has anyone built a quant career while staying in Poland (remote, local offices, etc.)?
- Given my constraints, is quant worth pursuing, or should I lean into cybersecurity, which ticks my boxes too and has a stronger local market?
For context, even if the quant path doesn't work out, the skills (math, stats, programming) should transfer well to data science or ML — assuming that field is still not popped by the time I graduate, and this is still the thing that i excel at uni.
Also, learning both at the same time seems like an option for a while — but with my already packed schedule as an athlete, I'm not sure it's sustainable long-term. So: is it smarter to hedge and split my time, or commit to one path early?
Thanks in advance!
