I my small rural town, someone posted an article in our Facebook group that insinuated Trump was pro flock cameras (no idea if it was true or not)
all the comments were "well if you aren't doing anything illegal then you have nothing to worry about" or "if these help our law enforcement get the bad guys off the street then I'm all for it!"

It took John Green to teach me that many men obsess about sports because... that's the only context in which they've ever been allowed to express feelings.
It's fucking sad, sports bore me to death, and yeah, they're still NPCs. But if stuck with an NPC for a while, it can sometimes be at least a little interesting to try to extract whatever their AFC Wimbledon moment is. I think of it like trying to jailbreak an NPC into doing something beyond its programming—even if you have no idea whatever the sportsball they're talking about, getting them to express an emotion publicly is a minigame of sorts that can pass the time (and hopefully avoid their "I don't do politics, but..." politics)

Listen ill defend the sports guy here. You hit 30 and you only have the bandwidth for like 1-2 hobbies. Choose one that developed a skill or gets you active. Choose one that just requires nothing other than following it. It’s fine. Ive slowly gotten annoyed with people who call it “sportsball” and make it their entire personality about not caring about sports. I follow cycling I’m not on a pedestal above the baseball guys.

For me I'm not a very masculine guy. I don't like sports, don't drink andn we wouldn't be able to have a conversation. My ex step dad never liked me. I'm pretty sure this is most of the reason why, hes a trucker, racist and an alcoholic. He'd always make stupid comments towards me, making fun of me, telling me to fuck off. Whenever I'd go over for dinner he'd get annoyed cause I would get a small plate because I don't eat a ton, in the family men have big plates and women have small plates. It was unfathomable to him, it got to the point where we wouldn't talk to each other other then hi and bye. He told me to fuck off when I asked him for permission to propose to my ex.
He would make a lot of bad comments to my mil. He calls her old and fat among other things. But can't handle when I call him older and bald. Make a lot of comments to my ex. But would never say anything bad about his son who's a raging alcoholic and drug addict.

The hilarious thing is that all these dudes are being sold an image.
I know what it's like being poor and southern. It means keeping a 15+ year old truck on the road by doing all your own work in a shed with a dirt floor, and when anyone in town buys a brand new vehicle it's a goddamn event. It means the plumbing working reliably only sometimes. It means your grandma is getting free government food and it really helps with the weekly grocery budget. It means hunting, fishing, or raising your own animals if you want meat. It means kerosene heating in the winter, and in the summer staying outside most of the day to hide from your house being a sauna - because even though you have a single window air conditioner for your house, you dare not turn it on until nighttime and it's absolutely needed to get some sleep, because otherwise the electric bill will be too high. It means having to get creative about disposing of household waste - burn barrels and composting being the two biggest methods, and throwing anything that won't burn into a "culvert", or giant hole dug in the ground that the whole town quasi-legally throws trash into.
It's a hard life and not something to romanticize, but it's ESPECIALLY hilarious when these dudes will go out and buy an $89,000 truck and a ton of state-of-the-art guns and a ton of outdoor/hunting equipment with coordinating camo patterns and then store them all in their 2 story McMansion with a finished basement, two car attached garage, fully functional HVAC and plumbing, etc. Then have the nerve to think of themselves as rural working class or whatever.
And don't even get me started on the politics. These dudes will have thin blue line flags and Punisher skulls on those $89,000 trucks and not even realize that traditionally, law enforcement is something with which poor southern folks have an uneasy tension at best.

Yeah, the most they dip into gay culture is that they might say things like guuurl or queen, and they enjoy the classic flamboyant gay guy stereotype personality. They usually aren't against drag, but they don't like it. They absolutely never care about anything lesbian, unless it's not overtly sexual, in which case they totally missed the gay part and thought it was just an uplifting girl power story of gal pals and sisterhood. Yep. I mean, I'm not a fan of beige everything, but having a consistent salaried job is awesome. I like having predictability in the major aspects of my life. I'll leave the spontaneity for things like going hiking or to an antique store.
I've learned that a lot of people on Reddit really hate when other people manage to more or less follow the expected life track. If you have a steady job, you really should want a gig job that you love even if it doesn't provide the lifestyle you want. And oh, speaking of lifestyle, you can't have too much of that otherwise you're just swallowing capitalist propaganda. Same with owning a single family home. You really should be living in a small apartment in a walkable city because that's the absolute pinnacle of human civilization. If you really really want Reddit to hate you, go ahead and have kids.
I'm saying this as a single guy with a stable job and a house at 34 years old. And yes, I'm exaggerating some of the above to make a point, but it's not as exaggerated as you might think.

I don’t get the Florida hate, I went from paying $8k a month for a rental in Manhattan to a $6k mortgage in Miami Dade. I wake up looking at the waves, palm trees, my own pool and occasionally to my wife in a bikini. I love this place and I’m proud to call it my home.

Too lazy? The US is huge. There is no need to spend more money to go out of the country to go to the beach when there are world class beaches right here. No customs hassle, electrical differences, people speak your language, etc... Shit, you may even be able to drive there with as much stuff that will fit in a car. Taking a family out of country is a huge hassle from the US.

Florida is massive, Miami Beach and the Everglades have nothing in common. You can kayak with manatees and dolphins in the mangroves, swim with gators in the springs, hike alone bears and panthers in the Ocala National Forest. There are 3 national parks and another 4 national monuments. I guess you can make it a lazy vacation if your idea of fun is margaritaville, but Florida has much more to offer.

I spent the first 30-ish years of my life in FL. Warm water for surfing, crystal clear springs and rivers, a zillion lakes for wakeboarding, great lobstering down in the Keys, awesome deep water fishing off the panhandle or in the atlantic south of the keys, spearfishing. Hugely diverse population means you can get authentic food from any number of Asian or latin american cultures. Lots of great universities.
FL rocks -- it's just a shame the state has an almost total lack of public transit and has gotten so overcrowded and dangerous and MAGA-y in some areas.

The guy has a nice reliable job, is able to take a yearly vacation, drives a newish truck, was able to afford the venue his wife wanted, and most guys here consider that an awful existence.

Every guy I know like this in rural area of California is actually Mexican but his job is with his hands blue collar reliable $, same big truck, wife is Yesenia or Vanessa, kids Sergio Jr and Ava, nice new build tract home, boat, Modelos after work. Vacation in Cancun or Baja California, nice guy voted for 🍊

These cool and edgy lives come with their own set of anxieties. On the other hand, you can have tons of fun even within your safe, suburban lifestyle. Personally, I've found out that having a predictable 9-5 existence makes it easier to plan for my hobbies and other side-quests.
