Review / Opinion What's your thoughts over modern ThinkPads against all part of David Hill's work?

I personally own a decently used ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 6 which, if you look on my history of posting here, I've bought fried and replaced the motherboard and battery on. I had the experience to hold and feel both a T14 Gen 5 and Gen 3, but if I compare them in practicality of what can my X1 do against those, it has more features than compromises.

The deeper key-travel is one of the first things you'd ever notice on this X1 compared to a modern ThinkPad, like I can type for hours on this thing and my fingers aren't hurting from it, and I get almost the same typing speeds I have on my Keychron C3 Pro Apex Red switches mechanical keyboard.

Another quirk of my X1 compared to a T14G3, which is what my friend has settled with after we almost got scammed at a pawn shop with the Gen 5 (supervisor password and pawn shop guys we're dumbasses), is both the feel, slimness and the ability to slot a 2280 nvme, 2242 nvme, and a microsd card in one place.

Another difference is be the bigger battery than the Gen 3, having 57Wh instead of 52.3Wh. It's not a major difference, I know, but it is at least half an hour to an hour of battery life. Then there's also the keyboard backlight being dimmer. I can light up my bedroom at night with the keyboard at max brightness on the X1, and even see the keys being light up during the day if i put the brightness at max, but not with the Gen 3 at all. And, I'm not a trackpoint user at all, but I love me some good feeling trackpoint buttons because I physically click those buttons whenever I use the trackpad, it's just feeling better for me to use the trackpad in that combo. And also, the socketed wifi on my x1 vs soldered on the Gen 3. Really Lenovo? Soldered wifi??

Anyway, I just wanna hear some opinions from people regards how they see modern ThinkPads. This whole curiosity came today after comparing what I got on my X1, including how the machine feels like, to my friend's T14, because he peaked my interest in upgrading, but I don't like the modern designs because they still broke that familiarity philosophy.

Buying Advice Thinking of getting on the thinkpad train (the p71 is overkill but how much?)

Would getting a p71 be to much?
I kinda love it. Fully decked out in power given its 10 years old, it’s big and bulky, and it’s got a port for an optical drive The p71 is everything I like in tech. I’m a hobbyist who wants to mess around in multiple areas (mainly just beginner Linux and graphic design work, along with my tech organization, networking, and practice with servers) and while it may be overkill I intend to use it as my main pc for anything I will be doing.

I have other routes for gaming and this will be closer to a work computer for general enthusiast projects.

The models I am looking at are the top of the line for the p71 (4k, highest model processor and graphics). scaling is something I’m serious about considering because i intend to keep this laptop long term.

Pricing wise I’ve seen them going around on eBay in my price range and assume they are trustworthy but if not the 1200-2500 Newegg ones will not do I’m looking at a max of 500-700 and for a 10 year old rocketship I feel like that may be justified.

Is it too much unless I’ve got an idea for video editing/ cad?
Would you recommend something else for an all around old school thinkpad?

Buying Advice In The Market for a New Thinkpad And I Have No Idea What to Buy.

Hi r/thinkpad!

I have £150 to spend on a new laptop that will be used for travel, everyday school work and watching movies and TV, but I'm not sure what to get. Upgradability and longevity is important to me, but newer thinkpads don't offer it, and the last truly modular thinkpad T480 is considered slow due to it being now 8 years old. I have a spare 16GB of sodimm DDR3 RAM, so maybe a DDR3 laptop might be a good choice becuase I can max upgrade it for free instead of buying a DDR4 laptop + upgrade. My current system uses 8th gen intel, I just want something un upgrade would be nice but I'm not too bothered, I'm just upgrading becuase of issues I'm having on my current laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 5580.

I'm looking at an L14 Gen 2 on eBay for £70, but it has some sort of issue:

"Laptop powers on but does not boot, screen freezes potential GPU issue - can sometimes be booted into BIOS, no further testing done."

If it's fixable is that a good option?

I'm also looking at an X2xx thinkpads due to their small screen, but will 12.5in be too small?

I also need a laptop that runs cool and quiet, my current laptop (Inspiron 5580) is the complete opposite and i absolutely hate it.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Question / Problem T450 random power loss

I am fixing up my sister's old T450 for a hardware dev use case and since last month, it's been a real pain.

Symptom

  1. Instant power loss, no warning, no shutdown sequence. Screen just dies.

  2. Happens after running fine for minimum 10 minutes, not immediately on boot.

  3. Audible click (sometimes) from the adapter side each time it cuts.

Ruled out

  1. Battery — happens with the pack physically removed, running on AC only.

  2. Adapter — happens on both the original 45W Lenovo (2015) and a 2024 65W Lenovo slim-tip. Same tip, both genuine.

  3. Battery health as a factor — Chinese, can't get an original.

  4. RAM — tested good in both slots previously.

Repair history

DC jack was replaced 2 days ago at a local shop. Fault recurred the same evening, within hours.

Config

Bare-metal Ubuntu 26.04. The internal battery was removed, running on an external 6-cell + AC.

Machine currently unplugged pending advice.

Question

Jack was just replaced and it didn't help. Is this likely a bad jack rework, or should I be looking at the power rail / charging circuit on the board? Anything specific worth asking the shop to check before I pay for more work?

Question / Problem Month old laptop - Battery issue

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all

I'm hoping someone can help me.

I have a month old new P14 laptop. From this morning it is insta shutting down if I remove the power cable.

I checked battery report which shows the below.

I have reinstalled battery driver.

It appears to not be recognising the internal battery?

Has anyone got any ideas. I rang a local IT guy who said he can't take the back off and check battery connection as it may invalidate warranty.

Thanks for any advice

Buying Advice ThinkPad X9 15 for a software developer, good choice?

ThinkPad X9 15 for a software developer, good choice?
I’m a software developer and will be starting a Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence master’s soon. I’ll mainly use the laptop for coding, IntelliJ, Docker, ROS 2 and general development.
I’m considering the ThinkPad X9 15 Gen 1. Would you recommend it for this use case, or should I get a different laptop instead?
I really like its low weight and 2.8K 120 Hz OLED display, but I’m not a fan of very glossy screens and reflections. How noticeable is the reflectiveness in everyday use?

There’s no price difference between the touchscreen and non touchscreen versions where I’m buying it. I’ve heard that the touchscreen version has a brighter display than the non touchscreen version, but I’m not completely sure. Is that actually true? If so, I’d probably prefer the non touchscreen version since I don’t like overly bright screens.
Would you pick the X9 15, or go for another laptop?

Question / Problem P72 0271 2102 Errors

Hello,

My P72 is having the following issues:

  1. 0271: Check date and time settings

  2. 2102 Detection error on HDDO (Main HDD)

Press Esc to continue .....

After pressing the Esc key, the laptop runs perfectly (boots from the M.2 SSD).

I’ve done some reading and suspect the RTC circuit. The socket where the CMOS battery is connected is supplying 1 volt. Can anyone comment on this? Replacing the CMOS battery didn’t make a difference either. Is the P72 still salvageable, or is it not worth the effort?

Question / Problem Issues with Sleep in Fedora 44 KDE Plasma

Good morning everyone, I recently just bought a used ThinkPad P1 Gen 6, with the i9-13900H and the RTX 4090. I'm running Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma as my OS and have been on my other laptops for some time.

The problem I'm having is related to sleep, where the laptop goes to TTY after I tell it go to sleep. The keyboard backlight never shuts off, and the ThinkPad logo doesn't blink red on top. I end up having to restart the laptop because it essentially crashes. RC Watchdog says that the GPU is probably locked.

This is the first time I've ever encountered a problem with sleep before on any laptop. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the RTX 4090 and the proprietary Nvidia driver or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question / Problem DVD/Bluray Drive - T510

I recently purchased a T510, the current drive in the laptop is only DVD and I’d like bluray capability. I’ve had bad experiences with external drives and tried 4 of them before. I want to rule that out entirely, my questions are:

While third party drives are available, would they have issues with limiting the quality of movies playing on the screen?

Are third party drives good quality to where I’m actually able to watch the movies or should I try to hunt for an OEM and pay the premium?

The questions are essentially the same at their core, just trying to gauge where I should go in respect to the drive itself.

Question / Problem Dock not detecting displays.

Hi.

So I bought Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C Dock Gen2 Model-LDC-G2 and I have an ASUS vivobook K360.

The dock works otherwise mouse, keyboard etc, but it wont detect a second display.

The dock is connected via the original USB-C cable.

When connecting the dock it gives the warning on the picture.

I downloaded the drivers for the dock, but it didn't help.

Buying Advice Choosing one

Hey i'm looking for a laptop for college and ive been presented with a few refurbed options. My budget is 2000PLN (a little under 600$). It would be used to take notes mainly and work on some graphic designs. My requirements are good battery life, good performance and quiet cooling. I have no idea if any of these will do and would like to know if there are better options.

  • T14 Gen 1 i5-10310U
  • T14 Gen 2 i5-1135G7
  • E14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 7 4700U
  • L13 Yoga 2nd Gen i5-1145G7

Discussion / Information Thinkpads cooked now?

I’ve now gone through 2 premium thinkpads (x1 extreme and p14s) in under 5 years now with both of their motherboards failing. Are the modern thinkpads just not holding up to the same quality they’re know for anymore? Considering options outside of Lenovo now with these two short lifespans. Dell, hp, Asus?

On my currently failing p14s I’m getting no POST, it flashes keyboard backlight, blinks on esc, f1, f4 for about 1 min but then just holds an idle state and heats up. Any ideas there?

Buying Advice I’ve settled on a laptop but it’s too expensive. Any alternatives?

Hello, I'm an english major in college but I do some rendering sometimes, my laptop now (HP Pavillion 14 from 2019) serves me fine but it's slow and can't run basic games. I want to upgrade to a better computer. I've settled on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 for it's durability, how it's made to do heavy work and the main priority which is it's going to last for a long time. However my mother found it too expensive coming in at around 3,275 USD (with student discount). Therefore I'm looking for an alternative.

I'm thinking about some previously suggested laptops like the Yoga Pro 7i with an Intel Core ultrua 7 CPU. which comes at 2,187 USD with student discount. But I'm worried about how it may break easily and how it may not last as long as the thinkpad. (Obviously it comes at a lower price which means I have to do some compromises).
And the slim series thinkpad get broken hinges as a commenter suggested.

I mainly use the laptop for notetaking, word processing like word, and light gaming like roblox and minecraft with occasional modeling and rendering in Blender (thats why i want a better GPU but this could be negated). I don't care about screen size.

I do also care a lot about battery life. Ideally it should last around 6 hours WHEN MULTITASKING like listening to music while doing word.

Question / Problem Thinkpad T440p Parts Enquiry…

Greetings people of reddit

I ended up with a T440p from a big joblot of laptops, and I only realised last night it’s actually worth saving.

Itā€˜s missing the bottom plastic cover, as well as the palm rest plastic + trackpad.

I can’t find any of these parts on eBay (UK) that are somewhat affordable… surely a bottom cover isn’t Ā£60?!

However, what I have found are these parts but from a T440/T440s. Will these still fit a T440p or are there differences? The hinge shaping looks to be different which already creates an issue with it fitting…

any help appreciated! Thanks

Question / Problem Restoring a T22, and Looks Great But What About Recovery Discs?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

So right now I'm restoring a ThinkPad T22 that was pretty bad condition so I'm using epoxy and several other techniques to fix the body and then sanding and painting and it looks absolutely stellar but my issue is the recovery discs. I found one on internet archive and while it does work every time I try to install the software and it reboots it doesn't go into the OS. So I'm not sure entirely how to use these recovery discs. I know there is one in a thinkpad community but weird you have to join the community to restore these PCs.

Here is progress on the machine but almost done being restored! Just waiting for pieces to dry before attaching.

Hardware Upgrade Thinkpad P53 Upgrades?

Specs are a i7-9850, Nvidia Quatro T1000 Mobile, 64GB of DDR4 RAM and a 2TB M2 NVME SSD. I got it for 500€ back in february, I think I got a good deal.

When I got it I added a second 2TB M2 NVME SSD so I have one 2TB SSD for Linux and one for Windows.

What upgrades could I do to my P53? I was thinking display because a brighter display would be nice, but are there any other upgrades or things I could add?

Question / Problem E495 iGPU memory clock issues

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all, I recently began owning the Thinkpad E495, and I have been dual booting Windows and Fedora KDE. While I should be getting 5-6hrs of battery life, as soon as I open a website that is even slightly intensive, my iGPU memory clock will jump from 400mhz up to 1200mhz, and it will stay pegged there unless I enter S3 sleep. This absolutely kills my battery life and turns it into a measly 2-3hrs, increasing my power draw from ~6-8w up to ~11-14w. This is consistent across Windows 11 and Fedora KDE. I hear this is a common issue too.
