Buying Advice How do I obtain 5M11S15823 (t14 g6 oled lid) without getting ripped off?

Upvotes

I've been trying to source the part from Australia and cannot find anything below 500USD. It's nearly the cost of the machine itself!

Buying Advice Looking for a used ThinkPad under $300 for performance— T14 AMD, X1 Carbon, or something upgradeable?

Upvotes

I was recently laid off and had to return my work ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8, which I really liked. I need a personal laptop for job searching, M365 (Excel, PPT, Word), lots of browser tabs, Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft AI certifications/labs, learning to build agents, light coding and some ML.

It will stay in my home office connected to an LG ultrawide, so I don't care about portability or having something thin/light. I care about speed, performance, RAM and reliability.

Budget is $300 max, preferably less. I have two little kids, so I'm trying to get the most performance for my money.

I've been looking at:

  • T14 Gen 3 AMD – Ryzen 5, preferably 32GB
  • X1 Carbon Gen 10 – i7-1265U, 16GB

But would I be better off buying an older T14/T-series for $250–350 and upgrading the RAM/SSD? I'm totally fine doing that.

Also, I've never bought a laptop from eBay or Back Market. A lot of people here recommend eBay—is it generally safe if I use a highly rated seller with returns? Is Back Market better?

If you had $300 max for my use case, what ThinkPad would you buy? Specific generations/specs to search for would be really helpful. I'm a Windows user.

I got this off of Facebook Marketplace for $200, it came without an OS because it also came without storage so I took it upon myself to get the both of those. Now that both are installed and fully functioning, I can say that the T14 is a pretty capable machine for my academic needs! Not to mention it came with 32GB of ram :)

Question / Problem Secondhand Question

Upvotes

I just ordered a used X220 from Japan, really excited for it. My (probably paranoid) concern with used laptops is obviously spyware/malware, but for me wiping the OS and installing Linux feels like it might not be enough. Is replacing the drive a standard practice for security purposes? I may be overly cautious, but the possibility of root kits / BIOS level malware concerns me. This is my first used laptop

Thinkstagram Picture Imported this JIS X1 Carbon Gen 8 from Japan, sold as “Junk”. Fixed it and installed Arch with my own Wayland compositor.

I bought this X1 Carbon Gen 8 from Japan as a “Junk” unit.

The battery needed to be replaced, and it also seems to have some weird charging / USB-C PD issue. Even a genuine Lenovo 65W adapter wouldn’t go much beyond ~15W, but after trying a few different chargers I eventually found one that works decently with it.

It’s now running Arch Linux and Denial, the Wayland compositor I’m developing. The compositor is written in Rust, with the desktop shell/UI built in Flutter.

Pretty happy with how this supposedly “junk” ThinkPad turned out.

Question / Problem T490 in dock video issue

Maybe someone can help me. I have a T490 that lives in a dock 24/7. Its sole purpose is to run a windows navigation program on a boat.

Connected to the dock are two marine monitors they are just like a desktop monitor except brighter and they have a dimmer knob. Only one is in use at a time.

While I am navigating the vessel I lose video randomly for a second or two. Then it comes back like nothing happened.

I suspect this to be an issue with the dock. Is there anything I should check before buying a new dock for testing?

Buying Advice ThinkPad X9 15 for a software developer, good choice?

ThinkPad X9 15 for a software developer, good choice?
I’m a software developer and will be starting a Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence master’s soon. I’ll mainly use the laptop for coding, IntelliJ, Docker, ROS 2 and general development.
I’m considering the ThinkPad X9 15 Gen 1. Would you recommend it for this use case, or should I get a different laptop instead?
I really like its low weight and 2.8K 120 Hz OLED display, but I’m not a fan of very glossy screens and reflections. How noticeable is the reflectiveness in everyday use?

There’s no price difference between the touchscreen and non touchscreen versions where I’m buying it. I’ve heard that the touchscreen version has a brighter display than the non touchscreen version, but I’m not completely sure. Is that actually true? If so, I’d probably prefer the non touchscreen version since I don’t like overly bright screens.
Would you pick the X9 15, or go for another laptop?

Buying Advice What to check on Secondhand Thinkpads

The thing is I want to buy my first Thinkpad as secondhand but I do not have a clue what to check before buying it. I am not meaning damages like keyboard is broken type of thing but other things. I would like to know what you are checking when you are buying a secondhand Thinkpad.

Buying Advice What specs do I need to compare to my old MacBook Pro?

I’m a college student and my 2020 m1 MacBook Pro screen just decided it wasn’t going to work today. The cost to fix the screen is like $400 where I live but I can get a used thinkpad for about the same price faster than the repair would take. My budget is around $400–$500. Will it be worth getting a used one of these from back market? I hate the be annoying, but what specs should I realistically look into as a business major who does a lot of PowerPoints and is mostly just doing school work and watching YouTube and stuff?

Question / Problem Running CS2 on P51

Hi all,
I was wondering how my trusty P51 would fare if I tried running Counter Strike on it. It has a 7th gen i7, 32Gb DDR4, and an NVIDIA Quadro M1200 GPU. It has NixOS on it as of right now, but getting steam to work is a hassle so I’ll hop soon (probably to Gentoo or Exherbo).

Question / Problem T14 Gen 3 i7 Freezing

Hi everyone, I've had my Thinkpad T14 Gen 3 for the past year and it has been awesome. Last week while I was doing homework, I frustratingly noticed that Windows 11 kept BSODing. So I finally pulled the trigger and went to Mint. I've used mint before and got it set up fine. Today I was doing homework again and it froze and did not recover. I tried switching kernels and it still did not fix it. Do you think something is faulty hardware-wise?

Review / Opinion What's your thoughts over modern ThinkPads against all part of David Hill's work?

Thumbnail

I personally own a decently used ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 6 which, if you look on my history of posting here, I've bought fried and replaced the motherboard and battery on. I had the experience to hold and feel both a T14 Gen 5 and Gen 3, but if I compare them in practicality of what can my X1 do against those, it has more features than compromises.

The deeper key-travel is one of the first things you'd ever notice on this X1 compared to a modern ThinkPad, like I can type for hours on this thing and my fingers aren't hurting from it, and I get almost the same typing speeds I have on my Keychron C3 Pro Apex Red switches mechanical keyboard.

Another quirk of my X1 compared to a T14G3, which is what my friend has settled with after we almost got scammed at a pawn shop with the Gen 5 (supervisor password and pawn shop guys we're dumbasses), is both the feel, slimness and the ability to slot a 2280 nvme, 2242 nvme, and a microsd card in one place.

Another difference is be the bigger battery than the Gen 3, having 57Wh instead of 52.3Wh. It's not a major difference, I know, but it is at least half an hour to an hour of battery life. Then there's also the keyboard backlight being dimmer. I can light up my bedroom at night with the keyboard at max brightness on the X1, and even see the keys being light up during the day if i put the brightness at max, but not with the Gen 3 at all. And, I'm not a trackpoint user at all, but I love me some good feeling trackpoint buttons because I physically click those buttons whenever I use the trackpad, it's just feeling better for me to use the trackpad in that combo. And also, the socketed wifi on my x1 vs soldered on the Gen 3. Really Lenovo? Soldered wifi??

Anyway, I just wanna hear some opinions from people regards how they see modern ThinkPads. This whole curiosity came today after comparing what I got on my X1, including how the machine feels like, to my friend's T14, because he peaked my interest in upgrading, but I don't like the modern designs because they still broke that familiarity philosophy.

Discussion / Information Thinkpads cooked now?

I’ve now gone through 2 premium thinkpads (x1 extreme and p14s) in under 5 years now with both of their motherboards failing. Are the modern thinkpads just not holding up to the same quality they’re know for anymore? Considering options outside of Lenovo now with these two short lifespans. Dell, hp, Asus?

On my currently failing p14s I’m getting no POST, it flashes keyboard backlight, blinks on esc, f1, f4 for about 1 min but then just holds an idle state and heats up. Any ideas there?

Buying Advice Is this a good deal and a configuration that makes sense?

I've had my t480s for 8 years now, I think it's time for an upgrade (screen has some spots, charger ports are a bit used, cpu struggles regularly).

I use arch Linux, I don't do anything that needs too much power, mostly just a lot of tabs with stuff like google docs and some simple wordpress stuff, sometimes I use an external monitor. The newer t series seems super expensive, the E14 Gen 8 seems reasonably priced, is there anything I need to think about when it comes to the configuration? I usually like to buy a new laptop and then keep it for a long time and maybe upgrade a bit along the way. I did pick the aluminium version. The price is about 1'543 USD. I don't have a super strict budget but I just feel like they are taking the piss with some laptop prices nowadays.

Buying Advice Choosing one

Hey i'm looking for a laptop for college and ive been presented with a few refurbed options. My budget is 2000PLN (a little under 600$). It would be used to take notes mainly and work on some graphic designs. My requirements are good battery life, good performance and quiet cooling. I have no idea if any of these will do and would like to know if there are better options.

  • T14 Gen 1 i5-10310U
  • T14 Gen 2 i5-1135G7
  • E14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 7 4700U
  • L13 Yoga 2nd Gen i5-1145G7

Question / Problem T450 random power loss

I am fixing up my sister's old T450 for a hardware dev use case and since last month, it's been a real pain.

Symptom

  1. Instant power loss, no warning, no shutdown sequence. Screen just dies.

  2. Happens after running fine for minimum 10 minutes, not immediately on boot.

  3. Audible click (sometimes) from the adapter side each time it cuts.

Ruled out

  1. Battery — happens with the pack physically removed, running on AC only.

  2. Adapter — happens on both the original 45W Lenovo (2015) and a 2024 65W Lenovo slim-tip. Same tip, both genuine.

  3. Battery health as a factor — Chinese, can't get an original.

  4. RAM — tested good in both slots previously.

Repair history

DC jack was replaced 2 days ago at a local shop. Fault recurred the same evening, within hours.

Config

Bare-metal Ubuntu 26.04. The internal battery was removed, running on an external 6-cell + AC.

Machine currently unplugged pending advice.

Question

Jack was just replaced and it didn't help. Is this likely a bad jack rework, or should I be looking at the power rail / charging circuit on the board? Anything specific worth asking the shop to check before I pay for more work?

Question / Problem Thinkpad T440p Parts Enquiry…

Greetings people of reddit

I ended up with a T440p from a big joblot of laptops, and I only realised last night it’s actually worth saving.

It‘s missing the bottom plastic cover, as well as the palm rest plastic + trackpad.

I can’t find any of these parts on eBay (UK) that are somewhat affordable… surely a bottom cover isn’t £60?!

However, what I have found are these parts but from a T440/T440s. Will these still fit a T440p or are there differences? The hinge shaping looks to be different which already creates an issue with it fitting…

any help appreciated! Thanks

Question / Problem e14 g5 AMD display upgrade

I just purchased this laptop https://www.ebay.com/itm/158229491214 but want to replace the stock panel. I cant figure out if its a 30 or 40 pin . I want something brighter and higher srgb coverage for photo editing work. Any reccs and does anyone know if I can swap 30 to 40 pin or vice versa or not?
