Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, i5 11th Gen.

Honestly, I’m loving everything about it. The weight, ridiculously good build quality, overall feel, and especially the keyboard. It just feels like the perfect laptop.

And this is coming from someone who has used a MacBook M2 Air and HP laptops for office work.

The only downside is Windows.

Discussion / Information Are non T series welcome to the cult? (L14 Gen 1)

Post image
54 Upvotes

Just bought this L14 Gen 1, and the fist thing I'm immediately doing is getting rid of Windows 11.

Am I welcome to the cult even though this is not a T series? I chose L14 over T14 becaus of the dual RAM slots, I really don't like the ideal of soldered RAM.

Mine has the Ryzen 5 pro, which is a pretty decent 6C/12T compared to some comet lakes out there. What do y'all think? Debian doen't seem to be very popular among thinkpads, all I see is Arch and rice

We had a neighborhood garage sale yesterday and I found this guy for $20. It was covered in dirt and grime, while also having windows installed on a slow hard drive. Gave it a deep clean and replaced that HDD with an ssd. Also put GhostBsd on there. It's running crazy fast now! I needed a new laptop badly, so this happened at the right time.

Thinkstagram Picture Imported this JIS X1 Carbon Gen 8 from Japan, sold as “Junk”. Fixed it and installed Arch with my own Wayland compositor.

I bought this X1 Carbon Gen 8 from Japan as a “Junk” unit.

The battery needed to be replaced, and it also seems to have some weird charging / USB-C PD issue. Even a genuine Lenovo 65W adapter wouldn’t go much beyond ~15W, but after trying a few different chargers I eventually found one that works decently with it.

It’s now running Arch Linux and Denial, the Wayland compositor I’m developing. The compositor is written in Rust, with the desktop shell/UI built in Flutter.

Pretty happy with how this supposedly “junk” ThinkPad turned out.

a company was replacing their machines, so I paid only R$800 for it, but here in Brazil it usually costs around R$5,000

Was just using my laptop when out of no where it just randomly turned off. Battery was fully charged and it just shut down now all that happens when I press the power button is it flashes all the lights on the laptop for a microsecond and then doesn’t turn on. I even Tried pressing the little reset button underneath and nothing either…

Buying Advice Is this a good deal?

Post image

Apparently it’s on sale rn and it’s $1,359.99. I originally got an E14 gen 7 but it’s taking forever to get here and I really need a laptop for college already. This one says it can get here this week, which would be perfect but I don’t know if its better or not.

The E14 that I got was $1,240.60 and these are the specs:

Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 258V

32 GB LPDDR5

512 GB SSD

I know there’s more to it but from what I see it has the same storage, which is what’s important to me. The difference in price isn’t too big so I wouldn’t mind. Also I believe the the T14 is a gen 5. Should I purchase the T14 or wait for the E14 to get here ?

Also for context I’m in college and currently in my first year. But I plan to do nursing and want to get strong lasting laptop that will last me into the nursing program and so on, which will probably be around four years in total.

Thinkstagram Picture My first ThinkPad! T14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 7

I got this off of Facebook Marketplace for $200, it came without an OS because it also came without storage so I took it upon myself to get the both of those. Now that both are installed and fully functioning, I can say that the T14 is a pretty capable machine for my academic needs! Not to mention it came with 32GB of ram :)

Buying Advice Looking for a used ThinkPad under $300 for performance— T14 AMD, X1 Carbon, or something upgradeable?

Upvotes

I was recently laid off and had to return my work ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8, which I really liked. I need a personal laptop for job searching, M365 (Excel, PPT, Word), lots of browser tabs, Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Microsoft AI certifications/labs, learning to build agents, light coding and some ML.

It will stay in my home office connected to an LG ultrawide, so I don't care about portability or having something thin/light. I care about speed, performance, RAM and reliability.

Budget is $300 max, preferably less. I have two little kids, so I'm trying to get the most performance for my money.

I've been looking at:

  • T14 Gen 3 AMD – Ryzen 5, preferably 32GB
  • X1 Carbon Gen 10 – i7-1265U, 16GB

But would I be better off buying an older T14/T-series for $250–350 and upgrading the RAM/SSD? I'm totally fine doing that.

Also, I've never bought a laptop from eBay or Back Market. A lot of people here recommend eBay—is it generally safe if I use a highly rated seller with returns? Is Back Market better?

If you had $300 max for my use case, what ThinkPad would you buy? Specific generations/specs to search for would be really helpful. I'm a Windows user.

Question / Problem Secondhand Question

I just ordered a used X220 from Japan, really excited for it. My (probably paranoid) concern with used laptops is obviously spyware/malware, but for me wiping the OS and installing Linux feels like it might not be enough. Is replacing the drive a standard practice for security purposes? I may be overly cautious, but the possibility of root kits / BIOS level malware concerns me. This is my first used laptop

Buying Advice What to check on Secondhand Thinkpads

The thing is I want to buy my first Thinkpad as secondhand but I do not have a clue what to check before buying it. I am not meaning damages like keyboard is broken type of thing but other things. I would like to know what you are checking when you are buying a secondhand Thinkpad.

Question / Problem Want to change my keyboard language

Upvotes

Hey, just bought a T14 gen 5, not cheap tbh. The seller on eBay specified it came without OS, but I want to put Linux on it so I didn’t needed Windows. The problem is that the keyboard is in Qwerty and I want it in azerty. The seller told me that he could change it for me for 50 bucks but I looks up keyboard part prices and they seemed cheap asf. So I told him nah. Do u guys think I can change it myself ? Or is it some hard shit. And for Linux. I also wondered if these machines handled it well ?
Thanks a lot
