This was installed into our in ceiling heating/air unit over night at my job. It was never been there before and my coworker was panicking and making a fuss about it.

Seems economically unjustified if only used for HVAC fine tuning. Can also be additional recurring revenue streams. Whoever owns the capture theoretically can resell it several times - maybe to energy auditors / researchers who need to fill large datasets, utilities, and surveillance companies can pay a retainer to be able to access it on demand when they're asked for site-specific or local data. Aggregating these data and cross referencing with license plate readers, outside cameras, security systems, facial recognition, and other types of identifiable individual data can be very useful. Finer and finer detail can lead to more individual types of thermal signature and other identifiers. Interesting to follow this as far as one can imagine it.
Any chance the lights switch on automatically when you enter the room? This looks a lot like the motion detectors my job just put in for its auto light system. No camera in it.
It could be a motion sensor. It turns off the system when no one is in the room/building (or adjusts the temperature). It helps the company save money on their utility bill.
Tell your coworker that it's for surveillance. It records audio, video, and x-ray scanning to make sure your not stealing pens and Post-It notes out of the supply closet. 😁
It's not a fastner because there is only 1. A side shot would show how much it extends, it's hard to decipher in your pictures. I can't tell if it's a ball or not?? It does appear to be some type of sensor and the best place to have a temperature sensor is close to the return grill (the center grill). I'm sure you can zoom in and see if it appears to be something different.
It does extend out into a some what dome shape but idk why this wouldve been added as our system is not new and has been in this building for several years.
Because these systems are modular and a Mitsubishi rep likely contacted your building's engineering department telling about an upgrade that would provide more energy efficiency. These types of systems are becoming more and more common to save energy

This is the equivalent of being offended over the movement sensor in my office that turns the lights off when they don’t detect movement for a period of time. I call it the heart attack preventer. If the lights in my office click off, means I’m sitting still for too long.
Its a camera of some kind it doesn't look remotely opperated but it is adjustable not sure why its on the AC unit though it doesn't look like any surveillance camera I've ever seen before.
