Ok, so WWZ. The book written by Max Brooks. Slow shamblers. Undead. Bodily fluids transmission only. The zombies' blood is too congealed to bleed.

The point was as much to broadcast a clean win to the public as it was to kill zombies. They ended up broadcasting a catastrophic loss.

Max brooks had the zombies coming out of new York walk through artillery and gunship fire. Thermobaric munitions included.

The military was on the ground, in trenches they had just dug, in full chemical gear, on a notably hot summer.

Everyone I have ever seen talking about that scene says it makes no sense, and that Mark Hamil's voice does the heavy lifting.

How would you write it to get the same result? The point is that the US military has to lose in a way that achieve the exact opposite of the win they needed for propaganda?

I first read the book about a decade ago, but revisiting it now, especially after the COVID pandemic, offered such a different perspective. I was shocked at how similarly the characters in the book handled (or mishandled) certain aspects of a global crisis, and I was particularly moved by the real toll the experience seemed to take on the folks who survived.

Anyway, I was compelled to share with other zombie fans. Apologies if this topic has already been explored.

I went in with no expectations and honestly just put it on to fall asleep to. It ended up sucking me in and I thoroughly enjoyed it. They do a great job of portraying the mass confusion and I love the concept of following the team in the radio station as they try to figure out what’s going on from callers. There were definitely some cheesy parts but this movie far exceeded my expectations.

Why wouldn’t people just move to rafts and boats that rely on solar to survive? I mean with the use of a vegetable gardens solar and wind energy a water desalination device and an electric motor you could totally just live out at sea correct? I mean I don’t think zombies can swim due to little to no muscle coordination and punctured lungs. plus the zombies would probably completely decompose after at most a few years? I mean I might be wrong with some crucial detail I’m missing or?

I’m a hardcore zombie lover. I’ve watched an unhealthy amount of zombie movies and shows, and one thing that always starts bothering me is how easily governments seem to get completely fucked once the outbreak begins.

Like… realistically, wouldn’t an actual modern government have a ridiculous amount of firepower?

Fighter jets. Helicopters. Tanks. Artillery. Drones. Surveillance satellites. Armies. Naval forces. Bunkers. Biological labs. Nuclear weapons. Massive logistics networks.

And then you have zombies who, depending on the universe, are basically just dead people who bite you.

So I’ve been thinking about this scenario:

There is no cure. There is no immunity. Zombies never stop appearing because every person who dies can potentially become another zombie. And you can’t realistically hunt down every single infected person on Earth.

In that situation, how could zombies actually win against a modern government?

Would the government realistically be able to contain the outbreak by creating massive quarantine zones and essentially exterminating everything inside them?

Would they abandon cities and defend strategically important areas instead?

Could they use air power to destroy major zombie concentrations and then slowly reclaim territory?

Or does the real danger come from the fact that zombies don't need to defeat the military conventionally? They just need the system to collapse through infection, panic, supply-chain failures, overwhelmed hospitals, contaminated cities, etc.

And if the government went completely insane and ruthless about containment, what would the realistic endgame even look like?

Because most zombie fiction assumes the government collapses pretty quickly, but I’m wondering whether that's actually realistic.

What would a real modern government do if there was genuinely no cure and the zombies could potentially keep coming forever?

I want the most realistic answers you can come up with, not movie logic.

This is a pretty fun book I just started diving into, this book takes place in the max brooks World War Z universe but solely focuses on the UK, it features similar formats and interviews as the original book

all events in the WWZ universe are mentioned in this book, the great panic, the nuclear exchange between iran and pakistan, redecker plan ect. it features interviews with the head of british intelligence, a SAS soldier who him and his teammates stumbled upon an outbreak in afghanistan when looking to secure an Insurgent leader, a hooligan who was in a human trafficking gang. A british police firearms officer who was there at the scene of the main event that caused the great panic in the UK among many others

Instead of Alpha teams there were "sanitation teams" basically biohazard units with silenced weapons. a british government that didn't want to hurt their approval ratings. instead of the "brushfire war" like in the original the book flat out states the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

i'm surprised this book has never been talked about in this sub considering the brooks universe is heavily talked about in here. so far I'm really liking it and probably one of my favourite recent zombie literature I've read along with the thin dead line series and posthumous romero novels. i'd recommend this one

I just got down voted to super hell because I said pvz zombies are weak? I can't even properly argue my point because these people have either, A never seen the comics, B just down vote and don't respond, C use garden warfare when I'm talking about the horde or D (usually D) don't know about the other zombies and haven't watched the video

I’m really passionate about zombie movies, but primarily non-American ones.

I love seeing how different countries interpret the zombie genre. Every culture seems to bring its own ideas and atmosphere, and I find that way more interesting than the typical Hollywood approach. In my experience, American zombie movies tend to lean more into action, while many international films focus more on horror and suspense.

My favorite style of zombies is probably what you see in a lot of Korean media, but my all-time favorite zombie movie is the Spanish film REC.

I’m trying to fill out my zombie movie world map, so I’m looking for recommendations from countries I haven’t watched yet. They don’t need to be in English as long as English subtitles are available.

I really like The Dead, Rob Freeman and Prince David Osei are a great duo and though it came out in 2010 I first heard of and saw it for the first time a few years ago. The film is great at capturing that old school dread of the slow, shambling creepy zombies that have been missing since the 1990 NOLTD remake.

The Dead 2 starts out as a decent follow-up, I like that it shows how the virus spreads from Africa to India and the rapid collapse. Joseph Millson is a solid new lead but it's pretty much a rehash of the first film except it's in India and his traveling companion is a kid which I wish it was another adult or even if instead of the MC Nicholas trying to get to his girlfriend which is most of the movie, it would've been cool if he got to the gf quick and we saw their journey trying to make it to safety together. So not as good as the first but still maybe worth a watch. I also heard they didn't actually have a permit to shoot in India so hilarious if true.

Overall the films are a great return to the classic Romero zombie and I saw as recently as January 2026 that The Dead 3 is in the works so hopefully we'll see it soon. Cheers!

Like zombies that wouldn't attack you, or when they look at you they just crack a smile or something. Or zombies that just want a hug

This list is not meant to dump on zombie media creators such as film directors or actors. And I understand some of this is necessary to further plots and stakes and stuff. This is just a fun rant about stuff I find dumb in zombie media haha:

*"Let's split up gang!". Scooby-Doo has taught us to never split up. And what do so many characters in zombie movies do? Split up. They split up even down to 1 person, not even into separate groups, and will go into dark spaces, long narrow hallways, basements. Like..how could this possibly go wrong? 😃

*"pff, I don't need a new weapon!". Just like im action movies, it always annoys me when characters who have very limited weapons wether that be not enough ammo or maybe the durability of their melee weapon is very weak: don't pick up new weapons. "I just killed this guy who had a really powerful and fully loaded assault rifle and there's a small gathering of running zombies heading my way.....I'm not gonna pick it up!"

*When characters are traveling on foot especially and willingly go into a long dark road tunnel or parkway that could easily have zombies hiding in there, all just to save an hour or so of traveling. I wouldn't give a damn if I have to spend 2 hours walking AROUND the area. I am not walking directly into a traffic tunnel full of broken down cars and busses that zombies could easily be hiding behind

*When characters don't MOVE. Seriously. Why would you just STAND there and let the zombies munch you? You have so much time and opportunity to get away and you just stand there advertising yourself as a juicy steak. Bro, RUN!

*When characters act like they don't see red flags. A person is limping toward you, pale and veiny af, teeth fully exposed and blood everywhere, hissing and half rotted and there will be those characters that stand there going "Jessica? Jessica are you okay? Oh dear god Jessica what's wrong honey? Jessica imma hug yo-AHHHH SHE'S EATING MY THROAT!" Maybe you should have stayed away from Jessica

*When characters act like zombies can be cured. They will see undead Smeagol hissing at them and think they can be cured
