Hey everyone. I actually found out about Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy through a popular Indonesian YouTuber. I was so hyped watching him play because I absolutely love history and daydreaming about these settings. But after some episodes, I realized the writing is a complete mess.
The game tries so hard to push "woman power," but instead, they ended up making the female characters look like the dumbest people alive. Here is my deep breakdown of why the story fails and how better mechanics could have saved it.
- The "Wannabe Sparta" Sophia & Cringe Lore
The game sets up a world where almost all the main authority and troop figures are male (Alec, Ezra, Faro), and the leads are female. That’s fine, but the execution is awful. Sophia has this legendary lineage as Alec's daughter and Ezra's student, yet she has zero strategy. Once Faro takes her Minoan book, she becomes completely useless—exactly like when Tony Stark took away Peter Parker's suit.
Instead of a cool plot where Sophia has to race Faro's team by using her memory, wit, and risking traps to show an imperfect but growing character, she just becomes a "Wannabe Sparta." She solo-rushes 90% of the enemies. Even with the Theseus armor, it looks cool in gameplay but feels incredibly cringe in the story. Her whole attitude is just: "I see enemy, I kill, easy." No thinking, no planning.
- The "Ice Age Girl" Who Doesn't Know Fire Exists
Sophia is my crush in this game, but the writers made her look so dumb. The game's monsters hate light. Historically, people in that era loved burning things down. Yet, Sophia never once thinks about making a fire torch or using light to fight back. It’s as if she’s an ice age girl who doesn't even know fire exists.
The game completely wasted the mechanics here:
The Light Orb Waste: The orb shines in three colors, but the white light only reflects sunbeams instead of being an independent mechanic. It should have had a battery percentage that requires players to find sunbeams to recharge it.
The Flame Torch & "Sniff" Mechanic: Since the game takes place underground, Sophia 100% deserved a Flame Torch mechanic. When the monster does its "sniffing" animation, it should create an air current/wind. The gameplay should force Sophia to crouch and shield the flame from dimming out. If it dies, you have to scrounge for items to relight it while hiding.
Fire Arrows: Since enemies use bows, Sophia should have been able to scavenge arrows from the ground or dead bodies, combine them with materials, and light them using her torch to create strategic fire arrows.
- #JusticeForLeni - The Most Useless Character Ever
Then we have Leni the cutie. She is written so poorly. She claims to be a master smuggler/thief, which should imply agility, high IQ, or quick wit. Instead, she has no brain, moves slow, and gets caught by Faro’s team like a total amateur.
Why is she even there? The game doesn't let us switch to Leni to utilize her small frame to squeeze through tight ruin spaces, solve agility challenges, or pickpocket enemies to steal hard-to-get items. They benched her potential completely.
Conclusion
Asobo Studio spent millions on gorgeous graphics but completely threw away how the daughter of Alec should handle betrayal, trauma, and the teachings of Ezra. They replaced deep psychological survival with mindless solo-rushing. The game is a visual masterpiece, but narrative trash.
What do you guys think, feel free to give your opinion and correct me if im wrong. Im sorry if my words pretty harsh and hurt anyone <3
