How is AI changing real-world decision making in agriculture

[Open Source] Building Agrocore: A modular agricultural management platform written in Rust

China has launched Cottonmind

China has launched CottonMind 1.0, a specialised #AI platform designed to connect cotton research, breeding, field diagnostics and farmer advisory services through a single digital system.

Developed by the Institute of cotton Research of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the platform includes a web-based research interface and a mobile mini-programme for growers.

Its cotton-focused knowledge base contains 41,680 research papers, more than 2,000 patents and standards, 559 specialised books and 1,806 approved cotton-variety records.

Farmers can use the platform to ask crop-management questions, upload images for preliminary diagnosis and consult agricultural specialists.

Researchers can use it to search scientific literature and connect information on genes, traits, varieties, cultivation and plant-health issues.

CottonMind supports Chinese, English, Uyghur and Uzbek, potentially improving access to technical information across major cotton-growing regions.

The developers plan to further expand the platform’s analytical capabilities and precision services, aiming to shorten the gap between cotton research and practical farm-level decision-making.

I built Groundtruth.
Disclosure up front: this is not a stealth ad.

Most AgTech for small produce is a hosted calendar:

Standing orders spawn next week.
The phone writes.
Stripe lives in someone else’s tenant.
That’s a real product.
It’s also a different constitution than a perishable wholesale desk.

The constraint I would not break:

One PC is the only writer.
The farm file is the books.
Replay the event log against the projection, and the screen is allowed to go red if they drift.
Connection state — Stripe keys, farm display name, etc. — is config, not farm truth.
Import refuses a foreign dump.

What that looks like on a wiped machine:

Empty on purpose.
No demo venue.
No seed inventory.
No invented calm zero.
First actions:
→ Venue
→ Standing or sample
→ Sow to cover demand
→ First wholesale order

The domain that’s easy to get wrong — and calendar apps usually flatten:

• Standing demand is weekly and undated.
A wholesale line is dated.
Those are not the same object.

• Harvest is crop-first. Pack is customer-first.
What the knife cuts vs. who gets the trays.
Both are printed from the same ordered-for-today read.
No second “cut” event kind.

• Leftover is actual harvested ounces.
Listed off the harvested tray, then collected on that row.
Not a guaranteed-yield leftover cap.

• Health is computed.
Healthy is not the default skin.
Stack, short:
Rust/Tauri + SQLite event log
React desk
Local-first
Free
No paid SaaS as the source of truth
Live card keys are still off.
Collect is test-mode on purpose.
I’m not claiming this replaces a multi-seat van + live invoicing suite.

Those products win at:
“Less thinking on Sunday.”
This is aimed at:
“Less lying on Monday.”
If you work on farm software:
How do you keep standing orders (rate) and wholesale orders (date) from collapsing into one table?
That collapse is the lie I kept hitting.

Custom Excel Farm Data Tracking and Calculations

Hello everyone! My name is Ethan Hansen, and I am an Agronomy Student at South Dakota State University. Throughout my coursework and experience I have developed a fairly strong background in building Excel spreadsheets. I have been thinking about offering custom Excel spreadsheets built specifically around individual farm operations.

If there is data you have been tracking and want to be more organized, I would be able to tailor a spreadsheet to your liking in order to improve organization and efficiency in your operation. These would be beneficial to track things such as planting dates, input costs, yields, expenses, or general field records among others. On top of record keeping, I also have experience with building spreadsheets that automatically calculate grain moisture, shrink, pesticide/fertilizer rates, nutrient removal rates, yield potential, etc. 

These are just some of the things I have done in the past. If there is something you currently track, or have always wanted a better way to track, I would be open to ideas and suggestions. The purpose behind this would be to build a spreadsheet specific to an operation and its record keeping strategy. 

I am mainly trying to gauge interest right now as I am unsure if farmers would find this service useful. If you have something you think would work well in Excel, I would be interested in hearing about it. I can provide examples of my past projects upon request.

What would make you trust an online marketplace for agricultural inputs?

Built a free record-keeping app for small UK cattle/sheep farms — would love feedback from people who actually do this

I built Pastkeep after looking at how much of UK herd/flock record-keeping (movements, medicine records, weights, breeding) still happens on paper or in spreadsheets, especially on smaller farms where an incumbent tool feels like overkill.

It's aimed at farms in roughly the 50–500 head range — tracks animal records, weight/ADG, health events with withdrawal periods, breeding dates, and produces records for BCMS/ScotEID/EIDCymru and assurance-scheme checks. Best API for 1–5 m multispectral imagery for small agricultural AOIs?

I’m looking for an API/provider offering 1–5 m multispectral satellite imagery for small agricultural AOIs, ideally without large minimum orders or expensive commitments.

The app currently uses Sentinel-2, but I’d like to add higher-resolution imagery for users with relatively small areas, usually around 20–50 ha.
PlanetScope 3 m would be a good fit, but I haven’t found a practical way to buy access at that scale.

I also tried SkyFi, but their EULA doesn’t allow my intended commercial use of derived imagery products.

Any Planet resellers or alternative providers worth checking?

I’m a Chilean Agricultural Engineer with a Master’s degree in AgroTIC from Bordeaux Sciences Agro in France. I’ve worked in Product and Data Analytics, as well as project management, mainly at the intersection of product, data, and real-world business needs — understanding user needs, analyzing how people use digital tools, and turning those insights into useful features.

That experience is actually a big part of why I started building Anadelia.

The idea behind it is simple: helping small businesses, entrepreneurs, and farmers keep better track of their activity, even if they’re not comfortable using digital tools.

One of my main goals was to make something that people who struggle with Excel or traditional management software could actually use without having to learn a complicated system.

That’s why Anadelia offers two ways to record sales and expenses.

For people who aren’t comfortable with technology, there are simple, guided forms that take them step by step through recording a sale or an expense.

From the United States to Colombia: Building a New Future for Colombian Agriculture

When I first came to Colombia, I was not looking at the country simply as a place to live or invest. I saw something much bigger: an enormous agricultural opportunity.

Colombia has some of the most productive and diverse agricultural land in the world. From the coffee-growing mountains of Huila to tropical regions capable of producing limes, bananas, plantains, avocados, mangoes, papaya and other fruits, the potential is extraordinary.

But I also began to see a problem.

There are thousands of Colombian farmers producing excellent products, yet many small and medium-sized producers don't have direct access to international buyers, accurate market information, technology, or the resources necessary to take their production to the next level.

That is what I am trying to change.

Building in Huila

My work in Colombia has brought me to the department of Huila, one of the country's most important agricultural and coffee-producing regions.

Huila's coffee industry alone is enormous. The National Federation of Coffee Growers reported approximately 149,077 hectares of coffee planted in Huila in 2024, with approximately 87,000 coffee growers in the department. Huila produced approximately 2.54 million 60-kg bags of coffee that year.

For me, these numbers represent more than statistics.

They represent families.

They represent farms.

They represent generations of knowledge.

And they represent an opportunity to connect Colombian production with consumers around the world.

More Than Just Coffee

Coffee is one of Colombia's most recognizable agricultural products, but it is only part of the opportunity.

I am interested in helping develop markets for many different Colombian products, including:

  • Coffee
  • Tahiti limes
  • Avocado
  • Mango
  • Plantain
  • Banana
  • Papaya
  • Cocoa
  • Granadilla
  • Lulo
  • Citrus
  • Dehydrated fruits
  • Coffee extracts and other value-added agricultural products

The goal isn't simply to grow more.

The goal is to create better connections between the people who cultivate the products and the people who want to buy them.

Connecting Colombian Farmers With the World

One of the projects I am developing through Alecava is a technology platform designed to map and organize agricultural production.

The concept is relatively simple.

Imagine being able to look at a map of Colombia and see where farmers are located, what they cultivate, how many hectares they have, what their production capacity is, and what products may be available for domestic or international markets.

For buyers, this can make finding producers easier.

For farmers, it can create visibility.

For investors, it can provide better information.

And for Colombia, it can help create a more organized agricultural ecosystem.

Why I Believe the Opportunity Is So Big

Colombia's agricultural exports are already growing.

According to Colombia's Ministry of Agriculture, agricultural, food and beverage exports reached US$15.317 billion in 2025, a record level, with coffee playing a major role in the increase.

In February 2026, agricultural exports reached another US$1.273 billion, with notable growth in products including bananas, plantains and coffee extracts.

These numbers tell me something important:

The world wants Colombian agricultural products.

The opportunity now is to make it easier for more Colombian producers to participate.

From Cultivation to Export

My vision goes beyond simply buying agricultural products.

I want to understand the entire process:

Cultivation → Production → Organization → Quality → Traceability → Processing → Packaging → Export → International Buyer

If we can improve each step, Colombian farmers can potentially capture more value from what they produce.

That means looking at cultivation practices, post-harvest handling, quality control, processing, packaging and ultimately finding the right markets.

It also means identifying products that have potential beyond the traditional commodity model.

A Colombian farmer shouldn't necessarily have to sell everything as a raw agricultural commodity.

There is an opportunity to create value-added Colombian products.

Coffee can become extracts, concentrates and finished products.

Fruit can become dried fruit, purees, concentrates and other products.

Agricultural production can become tourism.

And farms themselves can become destinations where people from around the world can experience Colombian agriculture firsthand.

My Finca in Huila

Part of my own project is a finca in Huila that I am developing around wellness, nature, agriculture and hospitality.

I believe rural tourism can become another way to create economic opportunity.

People increasingly want to know where their food comes from.

They want to experience nature.

They want to learn about coffee.

They want to disconnect from cities.

And they want authentic experiences.

A Colombian finca can provide all of those things.

The Bigger Vision

I didn't come to Colombia believing I had all the answers.

I came here willing to learn.

I've spent time with farmers, producers, workers and people involved in Colombian agriculture. The more I learn, the more convinced I become that the country has an enormous opportunity.

Colombia doesn't need to become something it isn't.

It already has what the world needs:

fertile land, extraordinary biodiversity, hard-working farmers, incredible coffee, tropical fruits and a climate capable of supporting an enormous variety of crops.

What I believe is needed is better organization, better technology, better access to markets and stronger connections between Colombian producers and international consumers.

That is what I am working toward.

And I believe the future of Colombian agriculture can be much bigger than what we see today.

The farmer is not just the beginning of the supply chain. The farmer should be at the center of it.
