I (M23) and her (F25)
We were together 8 months, on and off in intensity the whole way through. I have BPD. Sheās actually the one who pushed me into therapy and found me my therapist in the first place, and Iāve been in DBT for a while now. Honestly itās helped, I know my worth more, Iāve gotten better at self love, I can regulate and stay calm in situations that used to send me into a rage spiral. Itās been a long time since I actually had a BPD rage episode, that part Iām proud of.
I used to tell everyone (despite me getting cheated on in my previous relationships) that this is the most secure Iāve ever felt in a relationship. ā¦.One thing that fed my insecurity and i never recovered from it was finding out about a very close male friend of hers about half a year in, name and everything. Sheād always mentioned āa friendā like 2 or 3 times whenever she talked about him before that throughout the relationship, so I didnāt always realize it was the same person until it she name dropped him randomly when we were talking about our best friendās birthdays during a date. For someone with BPD, that kind of slow reveal about closeness with someone else hits a lot harder and faster than it probably would for most people, even when nothing romantic is actually going on.
The relationship itself was rough on both sides too. I did things months back Iām not proud of. Iāve owned all of it, taken responsibility, apologized more than once. But lately itās felt like Iām being punished for it on repeat. Old stuff dragged back up in every fight, cussing that went past anger into really personal territory, and she even said it herself at one point, that this was tormenting me. Every recent fight ended with me just begging for one moment of kindness, for her to be nice to me for once, and it never came.
We ended things for real this time. She deleted all our pictures, everything, actual goodbyes. Before ,
everytime we broke up or had a fight and got blocked, I used to do anything possible including making new phone numbers, social media accounts to reach her , begging , apologisingā¦
Recently we had a fight and when it started getting disrespectful I started proposing space and drew boundaries to what is acceptable anymore which eventually led to a breakup ..And for the first time in 8 months, when it ended, I didnāt chase. Didnāt call repeatedly, didnāt make a new number, didnāt spiral after her online, didnāt beg like I always used to. I just let it be quiet.
But I still have all our pictures. I canāt delete them, I donāt want to. She erased it like it never happened and Iām just sitting here holding onto whatās left.
I love her, I want her, and choosing myself instead of chasing has been the single hardest thing Iāve ever done. Iām in this miserable, dark place where I know logically this was the right call, but everything in me wants to undo it. I try to act normal, pretend everything is fine but it just lasts for a few mins, and I break down crying again.
Anyone been through choosing yourself over someone you still love, especially with BPD making the wanting feel so much louder? How do you actually survive the part where your head knows one thing and your heart is screaming another.
I feel helpless even tho Iāve gotten better with reminding myself that I have my own life and it doesnāt revolve around another person.
