Question How do you handle people taking shortcuts without asking?

Upvotes

So I had a game where a player could end the game with aetherflux reservoir. However, I had krosan grip in my hand. Without priority, I needed them to target someone else first.

Now instead of properly playing out the activations, they say: “Now I target all of you with aetherflux reservoir.” the other players say “I have no responses, gg”

I ask them how they order the triggers. they say they target me first because I obviously have a response if I asked.

How do you handle situations like this? By enforcing the rules, im forced to reveal information. They cheated, but theres not really a default way to “take it back” since they gained information from the cheating and that can’t be reversed.

Deck Help Plz help with deck feedback and suggestions! Mono black

Upvotes

This was my first deck I made. It’s a mono black deck. I really enjoyed it but didn’t always do the best. it’s time I start trying to upgrade and fix it. I already added some fixes but also am at 106 cards now. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (Additions, cuts, combos, themes, etc.) also open to changing the commander (that keeps the same theme) but I do love shredder lol

Discussion My mate told me they may be banning Rhystic study coming up. Do you think they will? and do you agree with it if they do?

Upvotes

Curious what people think. Will it be banned or not? He's pretty sure it will be.

Is it a problem at your tables? LGS or kitchen table?

Do you care if it's banned or not?

For me, I never see it, at the 4 LGS I play at and in kitchen table games with mates. It's not warping any meta I play in but I don't play cedh.

Curious on people's thoughts.

Edit: I'm loving this, such a wide variety of responses!

Deck Help Deck help take 3

https://moxfield.com/collection/Tw5sJ2GNwEKRLscudl8_3A

SORRY FOR ALL THE TEXT BUT THEY WANT A DAMN NOVEL.

Looking for input on lantern control/ drawdown wincon Bant deck. It’s built from bulk and playing in a high bracket 3 pod where the decks can usually end on turn 5 but wait for 6 (All fairly consistently so I wouldn’t call it 3 but the pods we play in.) Decklist below and if you can think of good cards just link them below please and I’ll see if I have them in bulk. Also thinking I need more control so if you can think of some changes in the lineup to balance out cardraw and control that’d be great. As of now the most consistent win is combining out with ——[[Saltroad Packbeast]] and [[Monk Gyatso]]—- or —-[[one with the Multiverse]] [[Displacer kitten]] and [[sensei’s Divining top]]—- into thoracle/lab maniac, sadly I have no Jace. If you read it this far I hope I didn’t waste your time and thank yall very much.

Discussion Choose my next commander deck

Upvotes

PLEASE READ AT LEAST THE CHOICES 😭

Well hello everyone!

I want to make a third commander deck, but as I am a terribly picky eater in term of that, I rarely fond something that really suit me.

I select 4 commanders that I think I'd like, but I want you to choose which one for me to give a try. (Bracket 3)

- [[Xira, the Golden Sting]]

- [[Kellan, the Kid]]

- [[Teval, Arbiter of Value]]

- [[Noctis, Prince of Lucis]]

Some context :

When I first started mtg (and commander), I only played a few precon, and liked black and green especially. I built some decks for me and my friends to play, but nothing serious, and nothing I really liked more than 3 games.

After a break, I go back into MTG by building during 2 months (with some breaks) a Mycotyrant deck, which is by far my deck of Heart.

https://moxfield.com/decks/st8m2M\\_bSUerNFv7CJ-f\\_g

I love mill myself, sacrifice small things, aristocrats...

That deck really is my baby. (My favorite cards are greater good and Yowgmoth)

I also built a treasure Vihaan deck that I kinda like (I built way more decks but it was more some compulsives builds that I forgot after 3 hours)

The aim for this new deck is a good bracket 3 to match my friends decks, that are, it seems, more powerful than the one I have. If you own/know a deck with one of the 'candidates', Id be happy if you kind of 'promote' it to me!

Well that's it I think! Sorry if I made language mistake, im not a native speaker ^^' and thank you for reading!

Discussion Hello! Need assistance crafting my evil warlock deck with Witherbloom, the Balancer

Upvotes

Here’s the plan:

This deck is intended to almost instantly get the entire table targeting you. It’s not intended to win, it’s a test of the tables teamwork. You are the evil warlock trying to slow the progression of the hero’s journey. You cheat out hi-mana value, powerful sorceries that are usually balanced around the fact that they cost a whole lot of mana.

The match slowly becomes a doomsday scenario if the table cannot stop you fast enough.

I don’t want sorceries that lock up and make the game unplayable… I want spells that frustrate people, create problems for them to confront. while I amass a token hoard to attack with.

  1. We spam creatures, and we spam them fast. Many mana dorks, low land count.

2)Bring out [[Witherbloom, the balancer]] asap with his creature affinity

3) slowly start altering the state of the game with increasingly powerful black and green sorceries.

4) Hopefully, you play a fun round as the archenemy. winning after a long, drawn out battle could be tragic, losing would be satisfying and fun.

Thank you!

Deck Help Tom Bombadil? *HELP*

Upvotes

So, I have a huge affinity for Tom Bombadil and recently decided to try and make it commander at around bracket 3. First off, I am still new to Commander but I have been deck building and playing 60 card formats for the past 20 years. I have it built with the intention of manipulating counters to reuse chapters in the sagas and speed up others while maintaining an enchantment heavy field to synergize everything. What I have is kind of the final product but I know there are "game changers" and such that I am just not sure where they fit in bracket 3 with how many different bracket guides I see floating around. Any help would be appreciated, it plays pretty fun, I enjoy it but I want to see if yall have anything to add. I appreciate yall and the link is https://moxfield.com/decks/5-fhABT5Q0mz-OKdYTacHQ

Discussion How much do you care about a deck's theme or aesthetic?

Upvotes

Not sure how to explain this, but how much do you consider when putting in cards if they fit the overall theme or aesthetic or "vibe" of the deck? Like for example, from the Command Zone today, one has a classic Dakkon Blackblade deck where he tries to put in RKF art to fit the overall aesthetic. Which I think is really cool. And then it was suggested to put in cards like H.E.R.B.I.E. (a futuristic flying robot) and Peter Parker's Camera. Which are fine cards but they don't seem to fit at all the theme or aesthetic of the deck.

So how do you like build decks? Is it all just about power and synergy, or do you consider the flavor and theme as well?

Deck Help Throne of the Grim Captain Rule 0

Hello!

I've always wanted to make a skeleton deck, but a lot of options at the moment are...not great.

So! Instead I've built a rule 0 deck for Throne of the Grim Captain because I find him a lot more interesting than other options!

Here is the decklist in question.

If anyone can offer any suggestions or improvements, i.e. better creatures to put in, that would be greatly appreciated! Its built around flipping into the Grim Captain and then slamming face really.

Budget is whatever, I'm just after something fun and as decent as it can be.

Discussion I am looking for something difficult to pilot that wont make my friends hate me

I love playing decks that are difficult or tedious to pilot. I like having many triggers to keep track of, or needing to pay attention to the stack, or needing to remember complicated combos, or anything like that. My favourite two decks right now are [[Abdel Adrien, Ward of Gorion]] with [[Candlekeep Sage]] and [Inalla, Archmage Ritualist]]. The "problem" is that I play with players who tend to take shorter turns and play simpler/easier to pilot decks, so I always feel bad taking a bit longer to play than everyone else. To be clear, I goldfish my decks religiously, and know exactly what my cards do and am not that person taking 45 minutes to finish my turn because I need to remember what my deck does. My table is also generally very chill with me saying something to the effect of "I'm going to give you the gist of this combo and skip to the end" and everyone just verifies that they agree that my turn resolved correctly. That said, I still just feel a little uncomfortable taking so long to finish my turns against decks that just don't. I just finished building [[Nymris, oona's trickster]] and I think this will be a great fit for me, but I am looking for more recommendations. I really like Dimir and Azorius but am open to anything really. I'd also just like to hear everyone's opinion on this situation because I am sure it happens all the time. Also we mostly play in high bracket 3 so trying to avoid commanders like Inalla that are difficult to limit in power. Alt win-cons, combos, 3 card infinites (or telegraphed 2 card infinites), and stax are all accepted and fine at my table. Nobody has asked me to switch decks, I would just like to be able to take shorter turns without sacrificing the part of the game I enjoy, which is making complicated decisions or playing with obscure rules interactions.

Discussion I yearn for a new control commander

I am a control player for both the love of the game and the necessity of it:

1) my favorite games are back and forths, holding people in check, always having a chance, until someone (ideally me if I played well) surges across the finish line to steal a win

2) my least favorite games are low interaction arms races to see who can top deck their win cons the fastest

3) the rest of my pod doesn't play too much removal, so I have to if I want 1 and 2 to be true!

But recently I've realized, in addition to the above points, I cannot stand facing all-or-nothing / kill on sight commanders. I HATE games where if you don't touch [[Y'shtola]] as soon as possible the card advantage snowballs, where if you don't somehow stop [[Kefka]] from doing that gross etb/attack trigger noone else gets to play, where if you don't kill [[Korvold]] before he draws 42 cards and curbstomps you noone else has a chance. I find these commanders irrationally frustrating to play against and find myself irrationally annoyed at how everything you want to do in the game is printed on the card.

So with the preamble out of the way, any removal heavy control decks that punish commander-centric gameplans? I have an [[Alela]] and [[Elminster]] list I already enjoy and I've considered going for a [[Liesa, Shroud of Dusk]] or a [[Vren, the Relentless]] build but want to hear community input on what might be a fun way to shut down these particular decks so the rest of us can play magic too

Deck Help Any tweaks to a Doran, Besieged by Time?

https://archidekt.com/decks/25950276/peace_through_force

As it said, I am tinkering with this deck as just a fun deck but effective deck. Not looking to add game changers in it right now, as the players I play with don't use gamechangers either, but I was hoping to maybe boost the power to somewhere in bracket 3? Or at the least, patch any holes or issue I failed to notice while making the deck.

I also try not to go too wild on the pricey cards, as I pretend that someday I'll get the money together to make this deck.

Deck Help First Infect deck. Thoughts? Any changes you’d make?

Just built my first Infect deck last week and did some further upgrades today. After goldfishing it a bit, it seems smooth. Any constructive criticism is welcome! I’m planning on bringing this to commander night this Thursday cuz our host loves poison decks. Went with [[Vishgraz, the Doomhive]] cuz I love me some Abzan and I love tokens.

Discussion Here's a list of "Almost There" deck ideas to inspire your brewing

We all have them: online decklists with 40, 60, or 85 cards built on an exciting concept but left incomplete because the idea is maybe too niche, inconsistent, or it just needs a few more cards from future sets to really solidify. I have a bunch of these sitting around in my Archidekt, so I figured I would put a few of them to good use and share them with the brewers out there to inspire some other lists. Some of these are more refined, some of them are very bare bones. If you like what I'm on to, I'm also open to ideas for how to complete the lists, but primarily--enjoy and good luck with your stuck lists!

[[Berta, Wise Extrapolator]] Spellslinger: Instead of relying primarily on cards that innately put counters on Berta, this deck would stick an aura like [[Spontaneous Mutation]] on Berta so she is always at 0 or negative power, allowing every spell in the list to refund one mana and fuel an almost Izzet-Style spellslinger/Storm gameplan. [[Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios]] could function as a backup Commander of sorts, and [[Seedborne Muse]] provides a backup plan of spitting out Fractals for a beatdown. List: https://archidekt.com/decks/24810248/berta_spellslinger

[[Ruric Thar, the Unbowed]] Lifeswap/Mind Control: This list would leverage Ruric Thar's triggered ability to lower your own life total before swapping it with an opponent via [[Soul Conduit]], and could alternatively look to knock out players by taking control of their turns with [[Emrakul, the Promised End]] and [[The Dominion Bracelet]] and casting enough of their noncreatures to have them die to Ruric Thar's damage. Tentative lands-in-the-graveyard subtheme since Delirium is already a goal. List: https://archidekt.com/decks/14214754/ruric_thar_emrakonduit

[[The Ancient One]] Artifact Voltron: Sometimes Commander games are won by bonking people with an 8/8 (or ideallt bigger) commander. This deck uses a sub-optimal commander as a payoff for a grindy graveyard-focused artifact list, where Swords equipment intersect both strategies. Quickly milling on turns three and four and falling back on more classic artifact payoffs, or a nasty [[Vela, the Night-Clad]] plus [[Rite of Replicatio]] finish. Still very rough list but you get the idea. List: https://archidekt.com/decks/25745189/the_ancient_one_artifact_beats

Deck Help Princess Yue clone Jank

I've been working on a Princess Yue clone deck to turn my creatures into lands to make them hard to remove, but playtesting it feels really inconsistent. The deck either doesn't hit many clone options or many value options and gets really slow around turns 5-6. I'm not looking to make this a crazy competitive deck, but I would like it to be playable in bracket 3 and hold its own.

I have the deck at 110 cards, and any suggestions to increase consistency or any value cards I'm missing would be super helpful.

(I also have tagged all the cards if it's helpful to look at it that way)

Deck Help Could I get some opinions on my Elsha decklist?

Hey yall, I would like some opinions on this Elsha Threefold Master list. Its a upgraded list from the precon, and all cards that have been taken out are in the sideboard. I’m open to any suggestions as I’m going to proxy all upgrades.

Firstly, which bracket do you guys think this deck should belong in? If it had no rhystic study and smothering tithe, do we think it could still fit in some b3 games or stay at b2?

Secondly, I am open to cutting any cards that you guys think aren’t a good fit/could be replaced by something better.

Here’s the list, don’t hold back!!

Deck Showcase I made a group hug deck built to lose, and I'm proud of it

I was listening to some commander content on Sunday where the topic of discussion was deck archetypes. The commentator made the assertion that a true group hug deck should probably be bracket 1 and it shouldn't be built to win games. I found this to be fascinating. The point of the game is to have fun of course. In just about every casual commander game, the main objective isn't to win. We want to win in a way that feels satisfying, or if we're not going to win, we want to have fun playing magic.

I want to make something perfectly clear. My deck can win games, but that is not my intention. My role at the table is to bring people up when they're behind, keep everyone alive as long as possible, and finally end the game in a draw.

I have 4 draw conditions:

[[Hurricane]] - an X cost sorcery that hits each player for X.

[[Squall Line]] - same function as hurricane but at instant speed.

[[Divine Intervention]] - An enchantment that gives everyone 2 turns before it ends the game in a draw as the last counter is removed.

[[Life and Limb]] + [[Spore Mound]] - A mandatory infinite card combo that if left unbroken, forces the game to end in a draw as a result.

I have 1 win con

[[Celestial Convergence]] - enters with 7 counters. It was created as an homage to Divine Intervention. This one is a bit trickier. I added it to function as a draw condition, but the timing is so precise, it could easily be a win con. When the last counter is removed the player with the most life wins the game. Players who tie for most life draw.

To support the draw condition aspect I added

[[Arbiter of Knollridge]] - sets all life totals to the highest among them

[[Reverse the sands]] - take all life totals and redistribute them. This is niche for the purpose of a draw admittedly.

[[Beacon of Immortality]] - doubles target players life total

The rest of the deck isn't particularly ground breaking. It's group hug as you imagined it rather than as you experienced it. I try to hit my pod with positive effects and pray they don't have interaction for my draw conditions. I do play with proxies so a couple cards are expensive, but most of them are affordable

https://moxfield.com/decks/ZlBSTsbZHkKujn35eP-T8A

Edit: It seems the world isn't ready for this strategy. This must be how wizards felt when they first introduced the idea of a "draw con"

Deck Help Big eagle goes extra

I'm building Lord of the eagles, the current strategy is to play some flying creatures and then play my commander, and smack my opponents, however I'm leaning towards and extra turn deck so I can attack more often.

I need some feedback of wich cards to cut and add, I would like to keep the extra turn thematic, the current deck is unfinished with over 100 cards. Thanks for reading.

Deck Help Please review this deck (total newb at deckbuilding)

I have been playing casually for a couple of years now but just been playing with precons that I upgrade. I go to prerelease events just to check out the new sets but at most I will win 2 out of 3 games and it's mostly by luck so my deck building skills are not the greatest. I have gotten to the point where I just have a lot of random cards I opened from packs or precons so decided to build my own deck from scratch using kefka, court mage as he's my favorite FF villain.

Now I used chatgpt to help me with this as I gave it a list of all of the cards I own and I know there is some decently powered stuff in there like necropotence and one ring but that's because I got those from pack openings. I told it to help me with creating a deck that sits between bracket 3 and 4. I basically told it I want to try to win by turn 7 or so as when I play casually that seems to be the norm.

This is what it came up with:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7936656

Over 75% of the cards on the list I already own including all the very expensive ones which is why they are in there.

Discussion Anyone running Pull from Eternity? What are the best situations you've encountered where it was surprisingly useful?

I'm not talking about the standard use case of getting a creature back after it got Path'd. I'm talking removing an imprinted card, something blinked until the end of turn, or a Prosper'd spell.

[[Pull from Eternity]] is such a unique niche effect that I keep finding new uses for.

Discussion Discussion: How should we discuss each player's skill level when it comes to the brackets?

TLDR : A B2 deck, played by a beginner or by an "expert", won’t feel the same at all, so how do you balance a diverse skilled playgroup?

In my group, we mostly play B2, and 80% of the players have only been playing for a year or less. Some are very dedicated, others play almost exclusively with preconstructed decks, some spend hours online to learn more, and so on... And among the rest, some are truly long-time players.

The “problem” is that the same deck, in the hands of different people, will perform very differently. One of our best players beats us very regularly because he plays very consistent decks and has a deep understanding of the game, even though he tries to hold back. Others think they have a weak, useless deck, but it performs very well when one of our best players plays it.
Is it acceptable in B2 to encourage people to improve their gameplay and their decks? Some people object because, in their view, that would amount to deck optimization, which goes beyond the scope of B2.

Same thing: what should we do when some players try to improve their decks to make them more stable and effective within the bracket’s limits, while others just play with whatever small bulk they have, or only flavorfull card but strong enough to not be B1 (like only LOTR cards and stuff ?)

Anyway, I hope I've managed to properly articulate the questions we have in our group
