Discussion I'm a little confused why we have prestige and legitimacy and stability and crown power, and now political influence too. Aren't they all doing very similar things?

6 Upvotes

Shouldn't:

Prestige be reworked to be a static number that functions also as your great power score, and is a product of many things, including the others listed here.

Legitimacy be reworked so you can't just have it at zero for the first couple of hundred years and be fine, before switching to 100 - and more closely tied to the ruler.

Discussion The Core Problem in 1.3 is that Wars and Plagues STILL Do Too Little Damage

45 Upvotes

Title. In general, I think the game is in a much improved state relative to 1.2, and I'm having a good time. However, I think a core gameplay problem is pretty clear, in that major powers tend to be far too stable relative to historical performance, leading to grindy repeat wars to bite off chunk after chunk of major powers and a lack of dynamism in the map. In one sense this makes some early game playthroughs too hard, as certain powers will just be these obdurate powerhouses you have to grind against for forever, but in another sense, this makes lategame too easy, as once you outrgrow france/spain/hungary there's basically nobody who can fight you. In a game where Hungary or the Mamluks collapse, the Ottomans would be far far stronger in the late game than any power currently is.

This is also a historical simulation problem. If we look at powers like Bohemia and the Mamluks, they're some of the most consistently powerful factions in the game despite both getting wrecked fairly early on in the time period covered by the game. Historically, these powers fell to disease and infighting as much as to outside powers.

Why does this happen? Well in the first place, rebels are weak, only having a few levies scattered in a small number of locations. I think they should be able to hire mercs with their money.

Another problem is that the death of large numbers of pops just doesn't matter for the empire, and is potentially even a positive. So in 1.4 there's talk of sending a bunch of plagues at the mamluks in Egypt (which was historical) but I question what this will really do. You'll have a lower RGO cap and it will be harder to promote people, but this isn't a huge issue for the mamluks. You'll have fewer levies, but the problem is actually their absurd wealth, not their raw levies.

My opinion: Losing a large amount of pops to disease OR war should impact stability via some mechanism. Marginal economic losses don't reflect reality here. People who are dying will have little to lose and will be more prone to revolting, and a plague or a costly war can easily be taken as wrath from god, or a loss of the 'mandate of heaven.' The stability hit also creates the potential for a negative cycle with lower estate satisfaction cap, which also means more chances for revolts.

Imagine a situation where the mamluks take lots of land with separatism, but lose lots of troops, and then face multiple revolts in which lots of people die, leading to a vicious cycle of revolts that the ottomans can capitalize on to expand quickly. Imagine killing a ton of frenchmen in a big war, resulting in a huge amount of instability that wrecks them and causes them to cease being such a strong power (but leading to Castille or England rapidly expanding.) That's the kind of dynamic we should have.

A big part of why 1.3 feels so much better is that battles are much more consequential due to the changes to warscore and war exhaustion, and this would reinforce that trend. (OFC, having a great combat AI would also help a lot but I'm trying to be realistic)

Additionally, this would make stability a more scarce resource, when in the next patch a lot of things that cost stability are no longer going to cost stability but "political power". This means that keeping low stability to get positive stability decay would be more risky than it currently is. That risk in turn would force people to play more strategically, and would be a good thing.

Speculation Memory Leak?

16 Upvotes

I'm fairly sure there's a memory leak problem with the game, at the moment I need to restart EU5 entirely once every ~1-2 hours I have it open. It doesn't seem to matter whether you are actively playing or just leaving it on the pause menu, the game will start slowing down either way.

Is Paradox aware of this issue and planning to fix it anytime soon?

Also, I have no direct evidence this is a memory leak but I describe it in this way because it gets across my point in a manner others can understand. I'm not technically adept enough to figure out what's happening myself.

Discussion Failed rise of Turks

9 Upvotes

Guys I feel like such an idiot. I’ve been running a really well and successful ottomans campaign. 1400 hit and I failed the event. I had NO IDEA there was a timer or any kind of criteria I needed to fulfill to advance or succeed the event. Can I salvage my run? My last save was 1399. I’m not opposed to straight up cheating to win the event bc I’m not restarting.

Edit: I feel ever more dumb seeing that if you actually LOOK at the Turk event you will see the requirements to advance…. Anyway

I declared on Eretnids to stall the event. They capitulated and I was able to grab all their land allowing me to pass the 1400 requirements.

Thank you to everyone for your advice!

Question Do Foreign Banks Leech Your Cities' Income?

11 Upvotes

I can't find a clear answer to this question and I don't want to start digging into the game files to find out, at least not if I can help it.

When a banking nation builds a bank in one of your cities, the only effects on the building seem to be detriments to the host nation, so why the hell would I ever let banks build in my territory? Does each bank actually steal 2.5% of your tax base, or does it simply generate wealth equivalent to 2.5% of the city's tax base?

Discussion What's the mod scene for EU5? Historical mods especially.

1 Upvotes

I've played EU since the very first Europa Universalis (yes I'm on the older side). I haven't purchased EU5 yet, I've learned that you need to wait for the Paradox games to mature and especially for their mod scene to take over. Usually there are a whole bunch of smaller mods for some time, and then they start merging into larger better mods.

So what's the EU5 mod scene like? Are there good overhaul historical mods that resolve most of the unhistorical issues of the game? Maybe later start dates, or a bit of initial historical railroading. I am not interested in min maxing, I prefer role playing in a world that is historical adjacent.

Review Pretenders revolt doesn't work.

Pretender revolts work great. The Basileus was demoted to a count, and my ruler became the first Emperor Michael in Byzantine history... As for Byzantium itself, for a few years after the revolt, it ranked outside the top 200 powers in the world..

Seriously how do you even defeat this.

This is like my 20th campaign as ottomans, i might not be that good but this shouldnt be that hard. We need an event where the mamluks should be idk like byzantine disaster type shi chaos.

I started my game as taking as building my control, doing roads, bridges, RGOS, trying to make a standing army, trying to be technologically advanced by building libraries, universities and so forth.

This is like the Dark souls of Grand startegy games.

168K regulars at 1496 by mamluks is straight up crazy.

Discussion Are hunting accidents bugged?

I've lost an heir like every 5 to 10 years to hunting accidents. Is there anyway to stop this? I have admiral election if that has any impact?

At this point I think my 90 year old ruler has had 7 different heirs.

Suggestion Promotions and Cabinet members need a rework badly, and maybe an Elite social class

0 Upvotes

It makes no sense that someone can go from an illiterate, impoverished peasant, to the top ranks of the country with insane wealth. Like there's no way it's just me that this is weird, the promotion system feels really immersion breaking. I'd like this to be an actual update but I'd settle for a mod until that happens.

My idea for the rework is basically

Tribesmen -> Peasant/Laborer (100% and 50% speed)

Peasant -> Laborer/Burgher/Cleric (100%, 25%, and 5% speed)

Laborer -> Burgher/Cleric (75% and 10% speed)

Burgher -> Cleric/Noble (50% and 50% speed)

Clergy -> Elite (5% speed)

Noble -> Elite (10% speed)

Promotion speed is just a guess as to what would be non-immersion breaking and balanced

Obviously elite would be a new class and would have very little pops but I think the idea could be interesting, because the cabinet members feel a little misrepresented. Historically there have been plenty of nobles and clergy who had a ton of power, and they would be the elite, it feels weird to just group them with another couple hundred pops that don't have the influence or power that they do. I think that elite should be a new social class that isn't hereditary outside of members from the crown estate, but prominent nobles and clergy promote (slowly) to become these elites with serious political influence, and those are the cabinet members. This also makes the pops more meaningful, so if a disease outbreak happens and kills a few of the political elite, your country feels the difference, as of 1.3 you can tell the difference in employment and pop demands, but losing the positive or negative influence will make it much more impactful. And as the game progresses we could also get some that support movements similar to vic 3, like irl there was Bartolome de las Casas, who was very vocal that the native Americans were intelligent with societies, cultures, religions, etc. this as like a country value of some sort could be interesting. And him for example, being an elite would make sense, and putting him in the cabinet would increase his political influence, leading to more flavor with movements, institutions and country identity. Historically Spain was brutal to the natives while France was friendly, and I know that we mimic this with decisions but I think that making it have more weight as to your country's identity and how they view other countries and/or certain parts of yours (slavery for example) would be really cool and would add a lot of room for new content. Imo this would be really great for people who like to RP, and assuming that content is added to make these movements worth embracing/suppressing, it would be super fun for every type of player.

I'm curious to what you guys think about this, please comment your opinions and/or changes, obviously this is just off the top of my head and it's not refined but I think it could be a really interesting change that adds a lot of flavor.

Okay so edit: I got lost in the sauce of trying to figure out how everything would work, basically what I want:

  1. Promotions that make sense, no more going from peasant to noble

  2. Cabinet members to actually matter/have power

  3. Movements like vic 3 agitators to add some external influence because right now there is almost none

  4. Potentially having options for cabinet members mattering individually, like only actually important or influential people

Question Silver coins only coinage law

34 Upvotes

Trying to understand the implications of the coinage law here...

If I am not mistaken, higher production of gold or silver causes uptick in the inflation rate, which hinders your minting slider (or am I wrong?).

So if I had a lot of locations that are gold RGO, wouldn't I want to switch to silver coins only coinage law so that I can produce as much gold as I want without worrying about inflation?

What are your thoughts? Ty in advance.

r/EU5 12h ago

Question Why does this location not convert? It says it should convert at a rate of 88 per month, but it only converts 1 per month. The rest of the locations in that provinces convert just fine, albeit at a rate higher than what is shown. I've encountered this with other countries and it always confused me.

Im thinking somewhere on Crete to get a port on one of the ends so it can cover stuff down to Egypt, but also my soon-to-be-annexed holdings in Greece, and future conquests of western Anatolia. Any good ideas?

Discussion Head of the cabinet getting deceitful trait two times

17 Upvotes

I've learned my lesson. I'll only appoint for head of cabinet if the character already have a cabinet trait. But getting the deceitful trait two times in a run is kind of crazy. I think my ruler also got it at one time. I've also got like 3 other characters with that trait that I had to get out of the cabinet. I think the chance of characters getting this trait is too overtuned.
