Guyanese in Toronto

I was born and raised in Toronto but love my caribbean music. My parents are Guyanese. I moved to the GTA area 10 years ago and don’t have many Caribbean friends who enjoy going to a bar and listening to music. I don’t drink, but I’ll drive anywhere to meet some like minded people. Outside of Chutney, Soca, Dancehall and Reggae, I am an entrepreneur and would not mind finding similar people with the same ambitions but also knows how to have fun while being responsible (I hate babysitting people).

Let me know your go to spots!

A new non-profit dedicated to classical music and opera has been formally incorporated in Guyana, backed by EU Ambassador Luca Pierantoni and built on a motto borrowed from philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: “Without music, life would be a mistake.”

The Euro-Guyana Classical Music and Opera Association Inc, which began earlier this year, was incorporated under the Companies Act of Guyana exclusively for charitable, educational, cultural and artistic purposes.

The Association’s strategic mandate includes performances and cultural exchange, staging concerts, recitals, festivals, competitions and opera productions that foster intercultural dialogue between Guyanese and European artists and institutions.

It also includes music education and community outreach, providing structured educational programmes in schools and local communities, including masterclasses, lectures and workshops.

Kitten Stuff (Important)

Kitten, about 4-5 days old, aprox 3-4 inches in length, eyes are still dark blue, very light weight, and obviously not fed. I have it right now trying to keep it warm before further issues arise. Blood pressure must be low enough already.

I have no KMR or ingredients to make a temporary replacement just for tomorrow. Warmth is all I can give before it dies. I have no idea who I can bring it to at a time like this, but I'm in Anna Regina.

Hi, I'm looking for a university in Guyana that would offer a foundation programme in science for students who were in the business stream but want to make that transition. Any recommendations, please drop them below or dm me

Discussion Stop giving white people easy access to functions / make content

Post image

We need to stop giving guys like Chris Must List easy access to our communities just so they can package us as “dangerous and exotic” for their WHITE audience.

I’ve been watching this pattern for a while and I’m tired of it.

Chris Must List (Christopher Hughes) is a middle-aged white Canadian YouTuber who repeatedly shows up in Caribbean communities, films people, and turns it into content.

•  Women get filmed and framed around their looks.

•  Men get filmed and framed around toughness, guns, “danger,” or street credibility.

•  The whole thing is sold to a largely white, Western audience as some kind of exotic, high-risk experience.

He isn’t bringing meaningful resources, long-term investment, or real reciprocity.

He’s not particularly wealthy or influential. He has a GoFundMe from 2024 asking people for $15,000 to cover his legal expense, and fun fact, he only raised about $2,000 as of 2026 from his own people.

He’s a content creator who found that Black and Brown communities in the Caribbean (and diaspora spaces) will give him access that he almost certainly would not get if the roles were reversed.

And he uses that access to create a product for white people who will never set foot in those communities.

This isn’t “just content.”

It’s a low-effort extraction model.

Show up, film the most visually or narratively extreme people available, leave, and monetize the footage. The people in the videos rarely see lasting benefit.

The communities get the same old portrayal: dangerous, hyper-sexualized, or “wild.”

And the next content creator sees that it works and does the same thing.

I’m not saying every outsider with a camera is automatically evil.

However, it’s always a white man and it is always group of Black men validating him or Brown woman giving him the girlfriend experience in exchange for exposure.

I’m saying we should stop treating easy access as the default.

If someone is clearly here to extract a specific aesthetic (looks from women, toughness from men, “danger” for the algorithm) and then leave, we don’t owe them the open-door treatment.

Especially when that person is not offering anything equivalent in return and would never get the same access in his own circles.

These guys are often just bored or looking for stimulation they can’t find in their own environments. Our communities are not their playground or their content farm.

If more people started saying “no cameras, no interviews, no special access” when the intent is obviously extractive, a lot of this would dry up. We don’t have to host it.

Buying gold chain: GT OR TO?

I’m looking to buy a gold Cuban link chain and trying to figure out if it’s more cost-effective to pick one up in Guyana (Georgetown) or locally around Toronto. My budget is $800 CAD (approx. $580 USD / $120,000 GYD).

They killed Amharas on the streets, inside their homes, while trying to flee, and while hiding inside the Orthodox Church.
