Lucy was expecting the couple’s second child. Desi, meanwhile, was always striving to make their family’s house feel like home. Inspired by his Cuban roots, he had a few small buildings erected on the property, including a game room, a poolhouse and a barbecue pit, to mirror the sprawling ranch style aesthetic he was familiar with growing up in Santiago de Cuba. Lemon and orange trees, which Arnaz planted, surrounded the home’s exterior.

Today is Lt. Col. Miller’s 99th birthday.

I was lucky enough to know him later in his life...especially around my formative years...when he was my Venturing Crew leader and mentor. He changed my life, and I feel incredibly fortunate that I got to know him personally.

He served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam between 1945 and 1973 and received three Purple Hearts during his time in the Marines. Some of the stories that he shared were incredible.

One that always stuck with me was from Korea. American troops were suffering badly from the cold and frostbite, but Colonel Miller’s platoon did not lose a single man to it. He credited a trick he had learned from Delos Nobles, a homeless man back home in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Delos would line his clothes and shoes with old newspapers to help keep out the cold, so Colonel Miller had his men write home and ask their families to send newspapers for them to do the same.

His platoon was also assigned as Marilyn Monroe’s security escort during her four-day USO tour in Korea. Colonel Miller and his men got front-row seats for her performance. When she offered him an autograph, he politely declined, so she made sure the lower-ranking enlisted men around him got one instead.

Colonel Miller also told us that after returning to California, he and Marilyn went on a couple of casual outings. He eventually decided the Hollywood partying scene wasn’t for him and stopped seeing her.

As my Venturing Crew leader, he led us to multiple national championship canoe racing titles. Some of his favorite quotes he drilled into us were: "He is best who trains under the severest conditions." "Pain is temporary, pride is forever." and "Win with humility, lose with dignity."

It still blows my mind that I got to hear stories like these directly from him. Honestly, he didn't share much because he said it would cause him to have nightmares. He's seen unimaginable things. But more than the stories or the history he lived through, I remember what he meant to me personally. He was my mentor, he had a huge impact on the person I became, and I can genuinely say that knowing Colonel Miller changed my life.

Beloved actress Audrey Hepburn makes her shopping at a Beverly Hills supermarket with her pet fawn, Pippin, whom she adopted while preparing for her role in the film "Green mansions". The iconic photograph was taken by photographer Bob Willoughby in 1958.

photographer Don Paulson was taking shots of Sonny and Cher in the Atlantic Studios in NYC in 1965. According to later details, Dylan unexpectedly “crashed “ the event because he was eager to meet Cher in particular. Cher included several Dylan songs on her albums for the next few years.  Her first Dylan-written hit “All I Really Want To Do,” was released in June, 1965, and it hit US #15, and UK #9. Her album came out in August of 1965, and also included “Don’t Think Twice,” and “Blowin’ In The Wind.

In February 1967, Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records, had a billboard erected at 8161 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles to promote The Doors’ debut album.
