I really wanted to like She-Hulk. It had the elements to make a good show, but somehow they squandered every advantage.

40

u/cmtosh95 1d ago

Really lost me when Banner, a character that was so depressed at one point that the only reason he didn’t commit suicide was because Hulk literally wouldn’t let him, is told that he cannot comprehend how terrible it is to be catcalled.

23

u/Tacomanthecat 1d ago

This one right here. As someone who was once a depressed young man full of rage, the minute they invalidated Bruce's struggles, I dropped the show. Haven't seen anything else outside of clips.

u/SinesPi 1d ago

There are some unfair criticisms of the Bruce / Jenn scenes... but following this line, I don't blame anyone being so offended that they do not pay attention to what surrounds it. Yes, She-Hulk threw the boulder further, but it was with a full shot-put throw, while Bruce only flicked his wrist. But trying to argue you have a harder life than Bruce Banner is so insanely awful that it's hard to think straight around it.

3

u/TheMostKing 22h ago

Right after Jen throws her boulder farther, Bruce throws another, way bigger boulder way, WAY faster. It's immediately established that he's stronger than her.

3

u/lewd_robot 21h ago

I saw an early trailer where she made fun of him not being able to control the Hulk and immediately knew the show was going to completely gloss over his deep childhood trauma.

People with trauma-induced dissociative identity disorder don't deserve to be punched down on by billion dollar corporations trying to score cheap "girl power" points. Especially considering that women are nine times more likely to have it than men are.

There are moments when it's tolerable, and then there are moments like the Abomination speaking event thing that are just so laughably bad that I get second hand embarrassment for everybody involved in the show.

49

u/Martyrlz 1d ago

Any moment I found tolerable just ended up being such a let down at the end. They had foreshadowed so many things only to do a gotcha into a fourth wall break that it just felt like the storys events did not matter

10

u/I_hate_everyone_9919 1d ago

Well, when you end your story with a deus ex Machina like that, that's usually what happens. The story pretty much doesn't matter.

20

u/MoneyBear1733 1d ago

"DOES ANY OF THIS MAKE SENSE? IS THIS VIBING WITH YOU GUYS"

No, She-Hulk. It does not make sense, and it does not vibe with me.

2

u/Witty-Lawfulness2983 1d ago

My wife hates when I declare an ending to something was “dues ex macandcheese,” lol.

2

u/BlackBlade1632 1d ago

Don't forget the horrible CGI.

I liked it fine but I'll never forgive what they did to the Wrecking Crew.

3

u/AthenasChosen 1d ago

Yeah same, but the writing just kinda sucked. It felt just janky and bizarrely paced. A season 2 with a totally different director but same actress would be cool.

15

u/RhymesWithTaco 1d ago

It was the last episode that killed it. I loved it up until they introduced that dumb robot that was actually the writer of the show. I loved how the show was just making fun of incel culture in real time. I'm a straight dude and I thought the strong independent woman theme was fantastic. One of she hulks whole things is that she chooses to be hulkified the majority of the time because it gives her the feeling of power that she lacks as a woman in the world.

5

u/Greedy-Employment917 1d ago

And that is awful writing.

3

u/Specialist-Click-869 1d ago

Bro if they left out the bullshit politics and just made a movie, they’d get more money. No one wants to hear shit about “you’re an incel because you don’t like strong female characters”. We had Wanda, Shari, fucking Natasha, Kate from the Hawkeye series is fucking cool, and so on! The only hated characters are the ones that the story fucking ruined (Iron heart, She-Hulk, Ms.America, and Captain Marvel).

2

u/thatguybane 1d ago

Complaining about "politics" when the show didn't touch the subject is snowflake behavior. Shitting on incels isnt political unless you live in a country where there is an incel political platform or are regularly incel related policies up for debate.

She Hulk didnt say "if you dont like strong women youre an incel". There were several characters in the show who did not like Jennifer but they werent portrayed as incels for it. There happened to be incels in the show as the villains and surprise surprise they dislike strong women because they're incels. A hit dog will holler. If a shows message is "fuck incels they suck" and you feel offended... 🤷🏾‍♂️

5

u/AndrewUnicorn 1d ago

I wanted to see She-Hulk fight someone who also has super strength. Nothing is more satisfying than watching one powerhouse punch another, and the other person refuses to yield and keeps getting back up. I just wanted pure muscle and willpower, like in Rocky, Real Steel, or Here Comes the Boom. I mean I'm watching She-Hulk for god sake.

But if I recall correctly, we never got that. Also, the show included a lot of political statements that were irrelevant to the plot. They violated three rules: show don't tell, maintain immersion and don't drag real world politics in, and don't piss the audience off by treating them like an idiots.

2

u/Martyrlz 1d ago

Oh they actually had Jameela Jamil as Titania, who showed up for like 10 minutes total. The political statements were barely even poltical, I wish it went poltical, at least it would have been interesting. Hell, an episode where it cuts between her annihilating Titania, and then her annhilating her attorney verbally in court would have been good, but there was just no real conclusion, so it was all pointless

6

u/AndrewUnicorn 1d ago

I was afraid I was wrong so I looked up Youtube just now. But her fight with Titania is incredibly boring

I think you are mixing what is politics and what happen in the court of law (I'm a big fan of Better Call Saul I would have loved it). Also I was talking about the real world politics they put in the show, not MCU politics.

3

u/Martyrlz 1d ago

I'm just saying they had the elements to potentially make a good show with a scene like you're saying, but instead whe got MCU grey boring mush.

2

u/Carzinisierung 1d ago

Yeah I wanted to like the show so bad because I loved the actress from Orphan Black, pretty much watched it only because of her.

2

u/TrueGuardian15 1d ago

They lost me at the wedding episode.

"Hey guys! It's a wedding episode! Those sure suck, right? Well, buckle in, buckaroos!"

3

u/Garchompisbestboi 1d ago

Probably because it felt like the show was talking down at its audience the entire time. Apparently the showrunner had a major falling out with Feige and hasn't done anything noteworthy in the industry since that show came out.

1

u/MildlyInteressato 1d ago

I thought it was hilarious. Flawed, but still entertaining.

1

u/JediPearce 1d ago

I just wanted it to be a legal drama set in the MCU.

1

u/Outside-Currency-462 1d ago

I just find it funny, like its terrible as a serious part of the MCU but as a funny, deliberately unserious legal comedy it's amusing to watch

1

u/Murky_Employee5589 1d ago

I really like She Hulk (except for the last episode).

1

u/heytheretaylor 1d ago

Yeah I mostly agree with that. I liked it but it never was what I was hoping it would be.

1

u/Auda100King 1d ago

She Hulk was always good, but not in her own show

1

u/Special-Lychee-5473 1d ago

I feel compelled to say that I really enjoyed She-Hulk and would like more in the same vein. I just feel like it’s important to make that opinion visible so that the assumption isn’t made that ‘everyone hated it’ or whatever. From what I’ve seen in the past on Reddit, I don’t even think this is a fringe opinion.

I haven’t watched the Cap movie but Falcon and the Winter Soldier was mediocre at best with some high points like the ones with Isaiah Bradley.

It didn’t handle the racism (it’s ridiculous that the police didn’t recognize Falcon or I am thinking too highly of USA) well or the immigrant issue. If they were gonna make the Flag-smashers sympathetic, don’t let them commit mass terrorism towards the end.

15

u/Typecero001 1d ago

Don’t forget that they butcher the Isaiah character in the later Captain America movie.

Went from “former super soldier” to “mind controlled killer”.

…and you did this to him of all people because?

7

u/Cpt_Broon 1d ago

Because he's a disposable, super-serum'd character. Thats it. Its really not that deep.

24

u/eabevella 1d ago

I was very disappointed by the F&W series.

It tried to tackle serious issues but it's done with a very superficial and in-your-face way that it just felt shallow and show-y. Not just the main plot but the characters too.

27

u/Routine_Freedom_5129 1d ago

"do better"

so lazy

5

u/Icewind 1d ago

Rumor is that covid caused last-minute reshoots and rewrites because the original plot by Karli and the Flag Smashers was a bioweapon. That's why they were stealing medicine in the heist episode.

3

u/PopeGeraldVII 1d ago

How do you take a white guy who works as the arm of the government beating a brown man to death with an American flag and not say ANYTHING about police brutality?! In 2021 for crying out loud!

Like, you're just running away from commentary at that point!

2

u/ScoobiusMaximus 1d ago

They were terrified of saying anything with the show. That's why the ending was just Sam saying "do better" with no actual suggestion for a solution

5

u/Garfwog 1d ago

"This is the only language they know," she said monotonously.

2

u/IOI-65536 1d ago

Honestly the bank scene was to me the worst of this. You have all of Civil War. Falcon ends up registering and being assigned by the government under the Sokovia Accords during the Infinity War saga, but even though he's been forced to register and fight for them, they're not paying him and he doesn't have a job so he can't get a loan? Exactly what are you trying to say in this scene? I don't think the writers thought more than two seconds about what that scene means in the context of the world they built.

→ More replies (2)

17

u/Aschuff 1d ago

I never watched the new captain america movie, but the falcon and the winter soldier was nowhere near as good as phase 1 or 2 marvel. The themes were very inconsistent and it was just a weird story that was rewritten multiple times because of the pandemic. In another world it could have been a great show, but what we got isn’t nearly as good as either of the first 2 captain America stories

2

u/Electrical_Bison9907 1d ago

Bs you don't actually remember phase 1 and 2 because both Thor 1 and 2 were dogshit. All Thor movies are dogshit tho lol

→ More replies (2)

3

u/SimplyHoodie 1d ago

It's really funny that they were making the "bad guys" (John Walker and the Flag Smashers) too sympathetic so they panicked and made them do horrendous shit (in John Walker's case, it's arguable how bad his action was) to justify them being the villains.

14

u/Maximum-Objective-39 1d ago

I think a lot of people didn't care for the Red Hulk fight.

19

u/nagrom7 1d ago

It was a decent enough fight imo, but it just didn't make any sense. Sam's Cap doesn't have the super syrum, so he's literally just a dude with the Cap shield and his fancy wings. He shouldn't have stood a chance against a Hulk for more than a couple of seconds at best. The only other characters we've seen take on a Hulk in combat were the ones way more powerful than even Steve Rodgers, let alone Sam Wilson, like Thor, Iron-Man in his specific 'Hulk Buster' suit, Thanos, and even Spider-Man.

3

u/AwesomeGuyAlpha 1d ago

shouldn't sam's current suit be stronger than the initial hulk buster, with the vibranium and all? i didn't find it unbelievable, they even showed that red hulk is still out of his league and he can't fight on equal footing

7

u/Heisenburgo 1d ago

It was kinda silly when he caught the flag pole from the Hulk, his sleeves were rolled up and he had fingerless gloves the whole time, so that whole area was exposed, not protected by the vibranium. Yet he just tanks a swing from a Hulk like that.

Seems like such a basic detail thing to get right but somehow they never did... like he should've gotten his arms ripped off! Reminds me of that awful last season of The Boys where MM holds the BDSM metal ball thing in Oh Father's mouth as he attacks and somehow MMs arms weren't destroyed either.

28

u/TheAndyMac83 1d ago

Wasn't it a five-second shot during the credits of an episode, or something like? That's what I've heard, which made me very confused about how it came to be the "everything wrong with the series" gif.

16

u/Martyrlz 1d ago

Pretty much, post credit scene without any followup or relevance

people only like silliness when it resonates with them, when they can think "oh that's funny and weird"

I'm not american so I didn't know who that lady was when I first watched the show, I think I misread the subs as "Megan the Stallion" so I thought it was some obscure superheroine who was in her civilian identity or something, the joke was completely lost on me that it was supposed to be some famous celeb, I just have no idea who that is sorry...

you should target your general audience

If Tony Gilroy had taken this advice, we wouldn't have Andor. Sometimes it takes a few seasons of Star Wars: Resistance for kids before we get to the Andors for adults.

Maybe I'm a minority in the fanbase but I'd rather have more flavors of shows open up the franchise to different groups of people so that both my niece and I can enjoy the same lore together, even if we don't watch the same shows.

its not weird, its having their pulse on pop culture and trying to appeal to a different/larger audience. The venn diagram of people who like Megan and Marvel grew cuz of that clip.

13

u/yournewbestfrenemy 1d ago

Also just like, the context of the scene. It was just two gals galling out. I saw the controversy before I saw the actual episode and thought "Oh no are these old out of touch writers trying to be hip and with it?" And it's just two ladies having fun after a win. I've literally seen friends of mine start twerking because they found their favorite flavor Calypso lemonade at 7/11, it's like everyone who was complaining has just never been around a woman who didn't feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

7

u/Worthyness 1d ago

It's also literally a post credit scene. It has no part in the actual episode beyond being a small comedy bit after the episode was done. Like every other episode before it also had small comedic post credit bits. Chuds took it way too seriously.

How are a couple of characters having fun in a cute post-credits scene out of place, mate? Is the entire show just supposed to be drama, angst and suffering? Are there no stories from real life of people meeting somebody famous and being goofy with them for a few minutes?

And yes, I know I'm bashing your argument really hard, because I really don't see it.

5

u/AwesomeGuyAlpha 1d ago

people saying its out of place must not have watched the show, its just 2 people celebrating getting a win after a long time, people get drunk and do far weirder shit than this irl, it was at the very least not out of place, you can dislike it but give a valid reasoning for that

It do have "pokemon go to the polls" energy. Not helped by other clips like she hulk telling bruce that she knows anger and pain in a way he couldn't or whatever.

The bad stuff they made really just kills any attempt at taking it seriously for most people.

2

u/Rampant_Butt_Sex 1d ago

She spent a good long monologue with Bruce about how men are putting her down in her profession during a suffering Olympics argument with the guy who lost his love interest and spent a good number of his years being hunted down, only to twerk it out at work in a professional setting. Hard to take her seriously after that.

3

u/ryanvango 1d ago

I'm pretty critical of most superhero movies/shows, but I thought she-hulk was fine. It was an off-shoot disney show. It was meant to be kinda goofy and fun.

People complaining about this scene, it was an after-credits one-off. "writing" had nothing to do with it, it was just for funsies. It isn't that complicated.

Some of these movies and shows you gotta watch just for fun, and some you watch because they should have solid writing and good storylines. she-hulk was just for fun. I don't know what's hard about that. The ending was terrible, though.

From the comments here and in previous threads, I suspect a lot of negativity is from people who never watched it, and/or are in the man-o-sphere. I'm usually the first to say "people didn't hate captain marvel/madam web/the marvels because of sexism, they hated them because they were bad." In this case, I think because she-hulk openly mocked incel communities and that whole world (rightfully so), they decided to drag the show they never watched. This is one of the few instances where yeah, I think sexism/toxic masculinity DOES play a role in the hatred, though maybe not as much as the original post implies.

It's just a fun show. go into it thinking its just fun and don't take it too seriously, and you'll have a good time. It doesn't take itself seriously, so YOU shouldn't take it seriously.

u/Shaiky1681 1d ago edited 1d ago

THE post credit scene in like episode 6 that enraged the Internet when you could've missed it if you let Disney+ autoplay over it

6

u/Tymareta 1d ago

2

u/Sick_Wave_ 1d ago

This is a stupid thing to get angry about.

4

u/nagrom7 1d ago

I love how that's the thing that pisses everyone off, and it wasn't even in the episode. It's a mid-credits scene that a lot of people probably would have missed if they let Disney+ autoplay the next episode.

Also it's a comedy show, you weren't supposed to take that scene seriously.

3

u/Specific_Ad1457 1d ago

It's honestly pissing me off how badly they're fumbling Sam as cap tbh. I like Anthony as Sam and I thought him and Bucky had a good dynamic and I liked him as Cap too. Unfortunately he's just been brought down by at best mediocre writing post endgame. I somewhat enjoyed both the show and movie but I will admit I am huffing a non 0 amount of copium just because I like the character.

3

u/grubas 1d ago

Cap series was full blown cowardice.

They set up to hit this big tone about migration and borders then immediately turned tail and ran from that.  They dipped a toe in the racism aspect but.... Then just sorta left it to never be spoken of again?

They had a good setup for all the superhero stuff, but it was an early MCU show and the writers kept half assing big themes to just go, "look superhero right and good!"

3

u/DevilGuy 1d ago

Ironheart was bad all the way down to it's source material, She Hulk had potential but it squandered it, the new Cap stuff was just a case of not good enough to overcome oversaturation, by the time it came out even if it was truly excellent it would have only performed OK, but it wasn't truly excellent it was merely good which means it wasn't good enough to even do OK in the environment it released into.

3

u/i_706_i 1d ago

I was going to disagree with you on the captain America movie, but honestly looking back a lot of phase one/two films were bad and were only fun as dumb popcorn movies. If the new captain America movie had somehow come out back then, before we'd had a decade of the same schtick, it probably would have been ok. And I really didn't like it.

7

u/sonofbantu 1d ago

I liked the new Cap movie but be fr—FATWS was a very poorly written. They try to force the viewer to sympathize with Karli (a literal terrorist), ruined Sharon Carter’s character for a plot twist that went nowhere, and failed to realize the true potential of John Walker (thankfully the Thunderbolts* didn’t let it go to waste). Also, while I don’t blame the actor, the new Falcon is so forgettable.

There are plenty of genuine criticisms for the show

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PassageKey2679 1d ago

The new cap movie, it was boring. I liked the show and I actually looked forward to the movie, love Harrison Ford. But, the movie was a drag for me. Couldnt even watch all of it.

Falcon and winter soldier was good, if only the villain wasnt annoying as hell.

2

u/mightyjor 1d ago

I'm not sure many would agree with your opinion of the cap movie and show, but I agree with the rest. I actually really like comic she hulk and Tatiana maslani but boy did that show have abysmal writing. I only ever saw iron heart in Black panther 2 and I felt immediately repelled by basically everything about her.

2

u/Pandoratastic 1d ago edited 1d ago

inconsistent writing that seemed to not know where it wanted to go

I think it felt inconsistent because it was stylistically trying to squeeze in She-Hulk from too many different comic book eras. She-Hulk has been reinvented in the comics a lot, with a lot of different tones. Instead of picking just one, they tried to do all of them.

So they were trying to adapt the chaotic and metafictional style of John Byrne era of She-Hulk, Dan Slott's superhero legal comedy, Charles Soule's serious legal drama, Rainbow Rowell's focus on relationships, and even touched on Mariko Tamaki's darker trauma-focused era.

If they had kept it down to even just two or three, it might have worked better.

2

u/finally_soloed_her 1d ago

Iron fist was also a failure. Bad writing didn't just suddenly start post endgame. There just wasn't nearly as much reason for people to stay involved. I really don't think this boils down to racism/sexism. Mainly just fatigue coupled with a marked decrease in quality overall.

Some of the Marvel Disney+ shows have been alright, but even Born Again really just isn't the same (@disney please stop the incredibly overt political messaging when you are part of the problem as it just seems incredibly disingenuous).

2

u/friday126 1d ago

The new Cap movie was NOWHERE near as good as First Avenger and especially Winter Soldier. Sam-Cap stuff just feels like filler.

2

u/KPalm_The_Wise 1d ago

I feel like the biggest problem with new cap is just that they don't know how to write that he's just a dude. He has no powers and yet he can catch a swing from red hulk with his hands.

When there's serum involved, you can hand wave all of that away, but when he's just a dude you're just taken out of a lot of it.

I liked the series, don't think I finished it though, but the movie was meh

2

u/igotchees21 1d ago

personally, i feel like they never thought the idea of ironheart through well enough. this is a character that is supposed to replace tony stark. tony stark is such a big, important, beloved part of the Marvel Universe that making an unlikeable character, that downplayed his genius, to replace him would never have worked.

miles morales wouldnt have ever worked as a character if he was an arrogant prick. he got all kinds of backlash and he wasnt even a replacement but because his character is so likeable, he has become a mainstay.

2

u/Read2Fap 1d ago

before all these things even came out there were campaigns online hating on them for being about women or minorities (in ironheart, both)

they weren't the sole reason for the failure, but they made sure few people could watch it without any bias

3

u/LegitimateHost5068 1d ago

Im not gonna pretend that the well wasnt poisoned, so to speak, but there are bigger issues at play with these shows.

1

u/Always_ssj 1d ago

I’ll be honest, this is the first time I’ve heard of Ironheart and I’ve had Disney+ since the service launched. Maybe marketing didn’t help the show/movie (I don’t even know which).

1

u/FreddyFrogFrightener 1d ago

Genuinely my first time hearing that Iron heart exists

1

u/Far_Primary2606 1d ago

New cap movie also suffered from bad writing.

"You have to stop calling them terrorist"

What?

1

u/Typecero001 1d ago

You had it in the first 2/3rds, then fumbled with that Captain America part.

The Captain America TV and movie associated with him were both badly written, and absolutely terrible for his character.

Tv show had him defending a terrorist, and fighting against a 3-medal of honor winning soldier.

The movie was an absolutely terrible in writing and concept. The less we talk about it, the better.

1

u/nemofinch 1d ago

I'm gonna stop you with bnd. Did racism effect it? Year probably but not as much as people think. I hate captain America in the MCU I just think he's boring but I love Thor. If they decided to write out Thor for the mighty Thor or even let's say beta ray bill I wouldn't watch it because I don't like those characters as much the person I cared to watch and their adventure is over why continue watching? To see same thing the old character did in a different font? People like to continue something because starting over is way harder.

1

u/ClaudioKillganon 1d ago

NGL, I actually really really liked Falcon and TWS but I may be biased because those are probably my two favorite MCU characters.

But the new Cap movie was HORRIBLE. I can't fathom how you or anyone could have thought it was anything more than mediocre, if we're being VERY generous.

1

u/_potatofromChaldea45 1d ago

Oh.. "A wasp", not "Wasp"

Good...

Good...

Because Wasp is the GOAT

1

u/SnooGiraffes8024 1d ago

All I heard about iron heart is smth to do with mephisto which makes me wanna watch it at some point

1

u/Skyfyre56 1d ago

The Cap series and movies had some issues too. Not insurmountable ones, but they definitely show. The series and a bit the movie were a little meandering in the plot and couldn't quite bridge the gap between 'hypothetical geo political drama' and 'superhero action' (which tbf, is a pretty hard series of genres to bridge, but Captain America 2 & 3 did it, so...). The villains were just not very imposing. Like Sam having trouble with 'a big dude' in the opening of BNW (I believe because of rewrites) or the Flag Smashers just being kinda 'meh'. Also BNW basically being a Hulk movie was an odd choice too.

Basically, both of those were plagued by rewrites and feel rather directionless making them, if not terrible, not great either. And, imo, not as good as most of phase 1 or 2. Suqints at Phase 2. Iron Man 3, Thor Dark World, and Ultron? Okay, you know what, they were entirely on par for Phase 2

1

u/Difficult-Ad-3938 1d ago

Antony lacks charisma for the role, and his Captain lacks backstory. This has nothing to do with racism.

Same thing people claimed with his Altered Carbon character - he just lacked performance (besides mediocre writing)

1

u/isaidicanshout_ 1d ago

Winter soldier and civil war are probably the best examples of standalone MCU films. Brave new world needed a really great, tight, smart script. It wasn’t that.

Just like how Ragnarok set expectations and Love and Thunder squandered them.

1

u/Just_Dab 1d ago

Ironheart is just sad, she shit on Tony for having the money to build his suits. Like he didn't built his first suit in a cave, with a box of scraps.

1

u/andresuki 1d ago

For ironheart the marketing shot itself in the foot by having "Tony Stark was only Iron Man because he was a billionaire" in the trailer without context.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ironheart also struggled with basically saying Tony Stark was who he was because of his money.

https://youtube.com/shorts/u_d1KvOHd0M?si=MzyLFOXjf5_KhJJ7

She-hulk had a dumb premise where it took Hulk decades and a ton of discipline despite having a very tragic past to master smart hulk but she hulk could manage anger immediately because she was catcalled and had to control her anger.

The Cap series for sure had it's moments, but it felt like a whole lot of nothing. The end scene where he was chastising the guy for calling the terrorist a terrorist was peak cringe. The last cap movie was painful because the villain was just so incredibly dumb despite being supposedly smart. He just wanted freedom so when he finally got his freedom what does he do in the end? Yup, turns himself in just so he could reveal his plan.

1

u/Optimal_Top_7081 1d ago

I heard she hulk twerked and that’s all I needed to hear about that show. Honestly this is also around the time where Marvel decided that making sure you were going to get stupidity humor shoved down your throat every few minutes. It all started with Ragnarok

1

u/Sirtonexxx 1d ago

You don’t think all the shit written about Ironheart before the show even aired had nothing to do with its poor reception?

1

u/FuzzyEmployment5397 1d ago

Ironheart was a pretty good show

I didn’t watch she-hulk but I can tell you most people who whined about it didn’t watch either

Didn’t pay any attention to the falcon show- didn’t seem whimsical enough for me

1

u/Happyranger265 1d ago

Calling she hulk true to source material is like saying apples and tomatos are same . Everyone who has read a single she hulk comic would disagree, she is always cool , beautiful , smart , emotionally mature and a total badass . MCU she hulk is closer to skibdi toilet than source material she hulk . It's an abomination imo

1

u/Caden12307 1d ago

Def not racism for most people with the cap movie, it was just all the other shit like she-hulk and iron heart came out before and most who gave those movies a chance probably weren't gonna again

1

u/Clickclacktheblueguy 1d ago

I haven’t seen the new movie, but the series also had to contend with some rewrites due to Covid. Originally it was supposed to involve a pandemic.

1

u/Zealousideal_Step709 1d ago

I never came around to watch the Ironheart series and am currently not subscribed to D+ anyway. But even in Wakanda Forever she was such an unlikeable character, I was surprised when I heard that she would be featured in her own series.

1

u/DatHazbin 1d ago

Unfortunately Sam Wilson feels pretty lackluster in the MCU and always has. Anthony Mackie does a completely adequate job but does not have even an ounce of the sort of command that RDJ or Chris Evans have over their respective characters. Maybe he just hasn't been given the shot. I haven't seen the new Captain America movie, precisely because I don't really think he looked very good. And I do really like the whole Captain America Falcon thing (I was always saying Steve should give him the shield before endgame) I just think they missed a lot of the characterization that needs to come with the mantle to make his portrayal good. There are elements of it in there, I just don't think it really works. And we can't have 8 movies and series about people living up to the name of Steve Rogers, let Sam have his own moments too.

I do really wish passing off the shield was a bigger deal. I think it'd help remove some of that baggage of "finding the new cap" if Sam had to struggle for his own reasons instead of literally struggling to hold the legacy against everyone around him.

1

u/Gingerpanda72 1d ago

She Hulk went Deadpool with breaking the forth wall, I think they really struggled to work a good story so went wild with it. But with all "Second String" super hero films made since End Game they has all felt like rejected "main" film characters and are making them a film/TV show to see what sticks!

That and in some cases their existence would have had some effect on the previous films plots if they acknowledged their existence but just wasn't anywhere to be seen (The Eternals) for example.

1

u/APerson662 1d ago

The thing is that in a lot of online comic book media discourse, there is a lot of racism and sexism. There was a lot of people hating on Sam and Riri and She Hulk because they were woke aka they're women and minorities. But that is more of an internet phenomenon that doesn't really dictate the performance of projects. Ironheart and Riri were just b listers who had disappointing shows and that's why they didn't do well. I do think the new Sam Cap movie was decent though. I feel like its performance was hurt by the overall reputational damage the MCU had taken in recent years.

1

u/CryozDK 1d ago

It's Clarence dude.

I will never be able to take that guy seriously. I'm even trying to but everyone I see him I don't see Falcon, I see Clarence.

1

u/Cela84 1d ago

She-Hulk made the amazing decision to call anyone who didn’t like the show a loser incel, and then acted shocked when internet guys turned on it. Like, what did they think would happen if they began the show by insulting a core viewing audience?

As for Sam, he needs to take the serum. I know he has a reason to not, but it’s dumb in a multiversal existence. But then again he can catch a flag pole swing by a hulk bare handed, so who cares about consistency.

1

u/Metalmatt91 1d ago

Falcon and the winter soldier lost me when the over arching theme was that we should feel bad for terrorist because they were refugees. Also white man bad because he killed a terrorist.

1

u/Gishky 1d ago

maybe for others she-hulk had sexist reasons. But for me its just so many weird things. She is a better hulk from the start because "women have experience with pent up rage"? Sorry that is a sorry excuse for a mary sue... On top of there not being a reason for the hulk being replaced. Its not like Iron man who died or captain america who got old... We saw the real hulk again in spider man! So why replace him?

And for cap... That is the falcon. What do you mean the falcon is captain america now? You cant have two titles. I loved the falcon. Especially his appearance in ant-man.

1

u/etherealimages 1d ago

Ironheart (the show) does a lot better with Riri's character. It definitely failed partially due to racism, look at the review bombing. I saw so many videos taking shit out of context and claiming stuff that either didn't happen or was misunderstood

1

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 1d ago

Brand new day had too much going on in terms of reshoots and inconsistent writing. I'm surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did honestly. It was still a good movie.

But I gotta wonder. Why, in the world, would they cast harrison Ford as President Ross at his age when they had to recast Ross because of the previous actor dying? Like you're just setting yourself up for failure. There wasn't someone in their late 60's you could cast? They had to go with someone over 80 years old?

1

u/oscarbberg 1d ago

I agree until that last point. The series was fun. But brave new world is a train wreck of a movie. Even my friends who like everything can't find anything good to say about it...

1

u/Hungry_Bluebird_4734 1d ago

I think it’s always a huge mistake when they try to pass on the torch.

Robert downie jr is iron man.

Harrison ford is Indiana jones.

Trying to have them pass the role to some unlikeable character or some female version always feels like such a rip off.

It also feels like it comes across as a dei insert by using your favourite characters which feels really disrespectful.

Black panther is a great example of actually committing to having black characters. Making Sam captain America just feels awful. They should have just let captain America die

1

u/Someoneyoucouldknow 1d ago

the red hulk cap movie was awful. literally one of the worst MCU movies to date. like bottom 10 at the very least. and shehulk was insanely sexist, that was the whole show. it was awful.

1

u/Jam-Jam-Ba-Lam 1d ago

Yeah ideally you have the new characters alongside the OG so when they step up into the role it feels earned. Sam Wilson had been through a lot of the MCU. I think he's a great legacy character. Iron heart if Tony was her mentor. I didn't mind her in black panther 2 but I've not watched the TV show and that probably tells you everything.

She hulk. I liked it enough. But no rush to go back to it. Good casting. But the show should've been better, funnier more so. But we haven't seen her in action as such. She could've easily helped out in brave new world. But meh it's no drama for me.

1

u/_sloop 1d ago

Agreed about the sexism. So tone deaf to have her whining about mansplaining and then completely talking over and ignoring the hulk when she goes to him for advice.

1

u/HookieDookie- 1d ago

No way did you just say the new cap movie was good. That doodoo was like, possibly bottom 5 MCU movie

1

u/TheShallowHill 1d ago

Ironically the first two both criticize their replacements and try to push them down to elevate themselves in some manner while Falcon and Winter Soldier was a solid successor series imo but shows are immediately weaker than movies when it comes to marvel.

1

u/Aggressive-Ad-8907 1d ago

Nah there was definitely a racist/sexist campaign against ironheart. There was over 10 thousand 1 star review before the show air because racist thought disney was going to drop the show at 12 am and not 6 pm. Caught red-handed in the act.

1

u/ihavetakenthebiscuit 1d ago

My biggest issue with SHE-hulk is the episodes were super short and there weren't many of them. I enjoyed the comedy style.

1

u/Naros1000 1d ago

Sam Wilson's character was assassinated by FatWS. I didn't see his movie as I had by then checked out of Marvel due to Ant Man 3 being crap, but the Writers have been failing constantly.

Also to me John Walker is the better Captain America because while he is very flawed, he still strives to be like Steve Rogers.

1

u/CobaltAnimator 1d ago

I wouldn't say the Cap movie was good, it was a bit of a snooze-fest to me. Felt like a bunch of ideas hot-glued together with not too much internal consistency. Also, the movie HEAVILY relied on the Red Hulk thing being a twist that was spoiled in like the entire marketing campaign. You could just tell they had a clue of what set pieces they wanted to happen but barely had the ideas to gel them together.

Such a shame, because Anthony Mackie deserves so much better

1

u/ThatGuyYouWantToBe 1d ago

I think the issue with Sam as captain America is that it was introduced right as Marvel fatigue was hitting the mainstream so that character got the brunt of it

1

u/PurpleCow48396 1d ago

The new Cap movie and series were good. Not great, but definitely as good as phase 1 and 2 MCU and I havent seen any genuine criticisms for either actually being bad. So maybe racism??

I think there is more to this.

1) In most cases replacing the well established hero with the sidekick doesn't really work well. There's a reason why the comics always get rebooted.

2) Marvel had a really weak phase post Endgame which effects other productions too. The only hero who could have withstood that is Spider-Man.

3) Cap4 has a really rough production history with lots of re-shoots. That's a typical red flag for the quality of movies.

1

u/Stunning_Box8782 1d ago

The new Cap movie and series were good.

Both had pretty bad writing, the show ended with Cap telling politicians to "do better"

1

u/TeensyTinyPanda 1d ago

I'm so disappointed Ironheart was shoehorned as Iron Man's successor when Moon Girl is -right there-

1

u/MailMan6000 1d ago

it's almost like making original female characters is better than making gender flipped versions

1

u/talc25 1d ago

In all honesty, Anthony Mackie bores the shit out of me in everything he's in. I managed season 2 of Altered Carbon because it's an interesting world, but Mackie was a clear downgrade from Kinnaman. Twisted Metal is awesome because of the setting and the actors around him, not because of him

1

u/Citywide-Fever 1d ago

They did Sam soooooo dirty 🤦🏽‍♂️ only for Steve to comeback an be a main focus in DD 🥶

1

u/Why_am_ialive 1d ago

Also they did a whole lot of sacrificing characters we knew and loved to prop up newer characters which just made everyone instantly hostile to the new characters

1

u/dsebulsk 1d ago

Idk if Falcon-hate is racism, I just find the actor playing him to be nice, but kind of underwhelming on developing I character I am invested in.

1

u/AlertWar2945-2 1d ago

I feel like with She Hulk its also that people like and miss old Hulk, not the new Proffesor Hulk they had in the later bits of Marvel

1

u/nidus75 1d ago

Ironheart was horrible. Horrible characters, horrible plot, horrible dialogue. Despite Ironheart not being too popular in comics, it still could've been good. We've seen it done before. Captain America is one of the least popular characters in comics but the movies were great.

Falcon captain America wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. The show was better than the movie.

I actually liked She-Hulk for the most part. It was silly and fourth wall breaking but so is Deadpool. I believe She-Hulk comics follow that formula based on some of the covers I've seen so true to the material. It had an agenda, for sure, but mostly everything does nowadays

1

u/kwanbisRealoaded 1d ago

The new cap has no charisma. Is a second grade character made into first grade. It didn't work.

1

u/marvelo616 1d ago

The new Cap series and movie were ok but had a mess of a production, last minute major plot and character changes, ADR, using Hulk villains instead of Cap ones, etc. And like many MCU and Star Wars Disney+ shows, it could and likely should have been a movie, but was stretched into a miniseries. Also trying to have their cake and eat it too by acting like the show is required viewing, but at the same time allowing for movie only watchers to be able to skip it entirely as Endgame leaves Sam with the shield and mantle, and by the end of the show, after initially rejecting it, he now accepts it, as most inferred initially from where he left off with Steve.

1

u/JudgeHoIden 1d ago

She-hulk was a bit sexism

And that is where I stopped reading.

1

u/skyld_70 1d ago

I think Falcon & Winter Soldier suffered from the last minute changes in plot due to the pandemic, and that that killed momentum going into the new Cap movie.

1

u/Calgar43 1d ago

IMO

She-Hulk was a great actress, solid CGI, likeable character....and just went nowhere. The plot was thin at best, and the 4th wall breaks (while in character for the comics) don't really "fit" in the MCU, and should have been skipped. It felt 50% filler content, and 50% "Lets use this as a vessel to introduce 5+ new characters". She have been more court focused into super hero crime/law and her stepping up as a figure-head/advocate in that arena. Should also have tied closer in with Dare Devil on the law side, with him and Banner being her mentors into the super hero world.

Ironheart was never going to work and is ridiculous on almost every level. Setting aside all the culture war bullshit (a girl ironman! A black woman! A poor person!) the whole story line was just...silly. She isn't going to be the next Ironman, which is fine, as the Stark "Face of super-humans" role is REALLY hard to fill, but she never really had her own role. She was a "down on her luck genius with nifty tech"....she was spiderman without the radioactive spider. There were lines in Ironman 2 that the government were going to roll tanks and take Stark's tech, but Stark's money and celebrity position had the government holding off....what's stopping them from roughing up a poor college student in control of a super weapon? She should have been brought in via Wakanda more, and played as Shuree's sidekick for a longer period before she found her own role later on. Probably not as Ironman 2.0, but something new. A new generation of "This is how the world is now, the cat is outa the bag" type of super hero.

Falcon irks me the most. Solid side kick to Cap in Winter soldier, but he's absolutely a "B" team guy his whole run. Going just by the MCU, the mantle probably should have passed to Bucky, with Falcon and Bucky being the new Cap and Falcon. Bucky should have been the new "face of super-humans", as he was both a respected soldier from WW2 and victim of illegal experimentation. His connection to both Cap, Falcon, the avengers and Wakanda lends him creditability and he's a great actor as well. With Stark and Cap both gone, no one stepped in to the role of "head super-hero leader guy". Banner didn't have the personality or tactical chops for it, Spider-man was too young, Falcon didn't really have the pull for it and Bucky doubted himself too much IMO. Falcon and the Winter Solider should have been Bucky taking up the mantle of Cap, and maybe not rallying the scattered super heroes after Endgame, at least being a focus or symbol there for them to rally around.

The whole thing just smacks of "No coherent vision" post Endgame, combined with the desire to rush out TV shows for Disney+, and it shows.

1

u/tomjbarker 1d ago

I liked she hulk -  but new cap movie was absolute garbage, iron heart was so so more made for my kids than me

1

u/PrometheanEngineer 1d ago

The new cap movie was NOT good... IMO.

Plus, I still am a firm believer Sebastian Stan is a far better Cap with a far better redemption ark. Hell hes a far better actor.

Plus having a redeemed cap along side the unredeemed US agent would be a far better dynamic IMO.

1

u/ScoobiusMaximus 1d ago

Falcon and winter soldier was only OK until they decided that the antagonists were too likeable so they made them go full insane terrorist for no reason, while Sam was a complete dick to John Walker and most of the time it was for no reason or a dumb reason. Then it ended with one of the most cringeworthy scenes ever, Sam's solution to complex issues is just telling a guy to "do better" because the show was afraid of making a point. Also they basically forgot about the "and winter soldier" in the title.

1

u/RacerDelux 1d ago

I’m not sure where you are getting racism from the new cap series? IMO attempting to address racism, but not doing a great job at it, isn’t inherently raciest. Neutral at worst with a side of disappointment.

1

u/jnegativ0419 1d ago

Love this, because for people to act as if those 2 things (racism and sexism ) play NO role are being naive. But yes, the Cap show and movie were the only "good" ones and I watched all of them.

1

u/VonJustin 1d ago

Edit for spoiler warning for She-Hulk. Not that spoiling the end would really be spoiling anything.

I really liked she hulk until the end of the last episode where she goes and talks to the writer and gets him to retcon a bunch of things to make story, plot and character motivations inconsistent. Then they never do the final battle! When she-hulk gets back she’s already won.

1

u/AunMeLlevaLaConcha 1d ago

Honestly, if she was written in the show to be a new villain, that would have been neat.

1

u/thcdepressed 1d ago

The new cap movie bring good as p1 an p2? Lmao

That movie was terribly directed, and was just regurgitating a bit of tfws. The whole brain washing and contrived villain. Felt like a ve show from marvel

1

u/NfiniteNsight 1d ago

Anthony Mackie just is not a star.

1

u/slackerz22 1d ago

The cap series was good, but hard disagree with the movie, I thought it was a 5/10 at best

1

u/ObeseVegetable 1d ago

I know it’s in-character for She-Hulk to break the fourth wall, but that was used as justification, in the final episode, to throw out the entire plot of the show and substitute it with one that was “more interesting” (according to her - and subjectively agreeable as the original was agreeably a bit overused) plot that they then only decided to show the ending of instead of any of the build up. It made the entire rest of the show feel like irrelevant time waste. Also she got to bang DD and they showed Hulk’s kid and none of that has come up since.

It’s just kinda disappointing.

1

u/RollTide16-18 1d ago

Mackie has never been a good leading man either

He’s not bad but you don’t want him being the tentpole lead actor of the largest movie franchise in history

1

u/keving216 1d ago

The wife and I thought she hulk was pretty funny. Not a great show but a good time.

1

u/thatguybane 1d ago

People been shitting on Cap 4 as if its Thor 2 levels of bad. Definitely tinged with racism. I agree Cap 4 was Phase 1 or 2 MCU quality.

1

u/hikam1 1d ago

New Cap movie was okay at best, which is annoying because the first three films are considered the strongest trilogy next to Guardians for the MCU

1

u/Bitter-Engineer-117 1d ago

She-Hulk wasn’t sexism at all, even female marvel fans hated that shit. It was stupid, poorly written, weird scenes like She-Hulk twerking with Cardi B, and the whole message was “She-Hulk got catcalled so she suffered more than anyone else”

The reason the MCU is struggling is because every time a show fails they just blame “racism” or “sexism” instead of actually figuring out why it failed.

1

u/Independent-Wafer-13 1d ago

The new cap movie is terrible, what?

1

u/Aero1000 1d ago

Falcon and Winter Soldier was great. Brave New World had a lot of attractive issues, but definitely could have seen it being pretty good too.

It’s a weird grey area for it to bring the most non-political, political movie
