Is it worth living there?

Hi! I’m 16 and currently in S5, and I’m considering leaving school after S5 and going straight to university rather than staying on for S6. I’d be 17 when I started uni. My mother is heavily against the idea, however I have a few extended family members who are in favour.

I’m mainly interested in applying for Maths at Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews. In S4 I got 7 As at National 5 and 1 A at Higher, and I’m fairly confident I could meet the 5 As required for the courses, especially as I already have one. I got full marks in my National 5 Maths exam, although I don’t have loads of Maths-related supercurriculars (I never did UKMT, for example). I have done a one-week engineering course at Strathclyde and generally just really enjoy Maths.

Medicine is the dream, but I’m unsure if I can go down that route. Most of my friends are leaving after S5, and I also have mild cerebral palsy, so I’m currently contacting medical schools to find out whether that would cause any issues with applying/going into medicine. I’m also considering applying for Maths and then deciding later whether to accept, defer or reject the offer depending on how things look with Medicine and potentially my UCAT.

I want to know if I'd even have a chance of getting a conditional, and whether there would be any massive drawback to going to Uni at 17. From my perspective, plenty of people who are young forv their year do it after S6 anyway, and I don't plan on drinking.

Hey this is definitely a long shot, but I got home from a trip to Scotland/Iceland last month and realized I had lost several instax mini polaroid photos from our travels. They were one of my favorite souvenirs, so would love to know if anyone sees them along their travels! They would have a colorful or confetti border. I'm trying to find a particular Oor Wullie story. I remember reading it in an annual published in the early 1970s or perhaps early 1980s. I've hunted about, but neither Google nor ChatGPT/Claude has been able to find it. I wonder if any of you can help.

In the story, Wullie is frustrated by not having a football team to play in, so he decides to create his own. He goes around all his friends and picks the best players from among them, position by position, until he has a crack team. I think he maybe called it "Wullie's Wanderers", but I'm not sure.

The story's punchline panel shows Wullie appearing the next Saturday, kitted out for their first game, but with one of the team asking, confused, why he is there. It turns out that Wullie had actually assembled a full team of eleven players, forgetting to leave a position free for Wullie himself to play in. IIRC, the final panel has Wullie, sitting on his bucket, grumping to Jeemy about his mistake.

I started my community at r/ScotlandFromAbove to share the beauty of Scotland from above, and I’ve been blown away by the support and the content you’ve all started sharing. and thank you to r/Scotland. It’s been a dream to build this, but I need to be completely honest with you all.

For the past 19 years, I’ve been battling severe health issues, including Type 1 Diabetes and the physical limitations that come with it. I’ve been trying to hustle and build this business over the last few months to prove to myself that I could still achieve something, but I’ve hit a wall. My body is telling me that I can no longer keep up this pace.

I’m currently at a point where I need to step back from content creation and business development to focus entirely on my health and recovery. I’m not sure how long this break will be, but I have to prioritize my survival over my screen.

Thank you to everyone who joined, posted, and supported this project. It means the world to me. I hope to be back when I’m in a better place, but for now, I’m signing off to take care of myself.

£5.20 for the short journey from Falkirk to Grangemouth on McGills. Almost had a heart attack when they said the price i had to make sure I hadn't been given a return or day ticket.

Been doing a lot more walking recently and fancy starting to tackle some hills - nothing massive, just wee ones at first and build up over time.

As a bit of a test, I walked up a bit at the Campsies from the Crow Road car park above Campsie Glen. Going up was absolutely fine, but coming back down was a different story. The arches of my feet felt like they were going to snap.

I was wearing what I thought were decent Mountain Warehouse walking boots, laced up tightly so my feet weren’t moving around, but now I’m wondering if I need better insoles or just a completely different pair of boots/shoes. As far as I know I’ve got pretty normal arches - not particularly high and I’m not flat-footed.

I’ve been Googling but I’d much rather hear some real-world recommendations from people who actually do this regularly. So… any recommendations for good shoes/boots or insoles? Thanks!
