Nobody noticed the Mona Lisa was stolen for 28 hours. Staff who saw the empty hooks assumed it had been taken to be photographed. In 1911 it was a respected painting, not a famous one — it became the most famous painting on earth because it was stolen.

A coral grouper that loses prey into a crevice will swim tens of meters across the reef to find a specific moray eel it has hunted with successfully before, then shake its head at the hole until the eel follows it back. The behavior meets the same criteria used to test great ape gestures.

China's first humanoid police robot went on traffic duty in Wuhu in January 2026 with an official badge number — "Intelligent Police Unit R001." By May, Hangzhou had a 15-robot squadron working downtown intersections, with published service stats down to 647.7 hours.

The only significant habitable land on Earth claimed by no country isn't unclaimed by accident — Egypt and Sudan each refuse it, because the border line that would give them Bir Tawil is the same line that would cost them a Red Sea coastal triangle ten times more valuable.

In 1876 fresh meat fell from a cloudless sky in Kentucky. Microscopists found lung, cartilage, and striated muscle from several different animals, with no digestive contents. The answer is vulture kettles — and it points at something bigger: the sky is a loaded biological transport system.

TIL that "Casual Friday" is an anagram of "Causal Friday", which implies that there are non-causal Fridays, which is concerning

If there are Fridays that aren't causally related to the rest of the week, then a Friday can theoretically just occur spontaneously at any time. You might be thinking, "what's the problem? Friday is one of the best days!", but that's only because you know Saturday is next. A non-causal Friday has no causal relationship, so it can come before or after anything, including units of time that aren't days. Imagine what would happen if an entire Friday spontaneously occurred between two seconds. It would be a catastrophe.

San Francisco's white-crowned sparrows sing in 18 distinct neighborhood dialects — Presidio, Lake Merced, Marin Headlands — some only a few hundred meters apart. Females prefer their local accent when choosing mates & a 2024 study found adjacent neighborhoods are genetically diverging as a result.

The 2003 Antwerp diamond vault heist is the cleanest case study in how defense-in-depth fails. Ten independent layers, each beaten by something trivial — hairspray on the IR sensor, aluminum tape on the magnetic contact — because the attacker had 2.5 years of legitimate tenant access to study them.

Palm Jumeirah has no concrete foundation — it's 94 million m³ of dredged marine sand behind a rock breakwater. It sinks ~5mm/year, loses sand continuously to wave action, and one replenishment operation moved 3.5 million m³. Dredging also buried the coral reef that used to dissipate the wave energy.

A 1,400-lb wheel of cheddar sat aging in the White House entrance hall for 2 yrs, reportedly smellable from blocks away. In 1837 Andrew Jackson invited the public in to eat it. Thousands came, finished it in 2 hours & ground it into the carpets. The next admin had to whitewash the East Room.

A crypto company CEO bought RealDoll in 2024, reverse-merged it into a public shell & now sells $20,000 animatronic companions with magnetic swappable faces. Meanwhile Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Figure, and every other major humanoid maker has committed to never entering the romantic companion market.
