I recently had an abortion at 5 weeks along. I found out the weekend prior, I spent 6 days contemplating while I had the appointment scheduled.
I found myself reading stories on here for hours at a time, longing for it to feel like someone understood. Hoping to find someone in the same position as me. I found comfort in this community and I have come here to pass the comfort forward.
My husband and I have been together 5 years, we have two beautiful boys 3 years old and 1 1/2 year old. We knew we were done. Having two under two wasnt for the weak. I also work from home full time (sales) while watching my babies. There are some days I really question my sanity. On top of that I own a photography business, I often find myself so busy I dont get more than 5 minutes to myself by the end of the day, and I mean that literally...the 5 mins are the addition of thr SOLO bathroom trips during the day.
My marriage is in a rocky place, we are in couples therapy trying our best to work through it. Not sure of thr future but trying our best.
I was on birth control, but my primary care left the practice last month, it was the same month my year rx refill expired, and they wouldnt give me anymore until I saw my Dr. Well it was crazy busy, I kept pushing it off. I had only been off BC for a month and we were careful...
I got a notification from my Flo App that I was a day late last Sunday... not this past but the one before. And I thought theres no way... I must be stressed. But I was transparent and told my husband because I knew he would be upset if god forbid I was pregnant and didnt tell him I was speculating. Well I told him and asked if I should take a test, he said yes. It was nighttime, our boys both already in bed, the second line popped up right away... before the control line even could.
I was so scared, so mad. I could even say the word abortion out loud, and I still havent. But we talked about it and knew we couldnt do it. Our marriage wouldnt survive and I might not even, I had a few emotional breakdowns the past few months leading to temporary thoughts of harming myself. We agreed I would make the call first thing the next morning. I called my OB and learned I would have to go through Planned Parenthood. Im in FL by the way.
Planned parenthood could get me in that Thursday and told me the state had a 24 hr waiting period so after my first visit where they confirm the pregnancy I would have to wait a minimum of 24 hours before I could proceed with the abortion. Luckily I had an office close to me. I spent the next 4 days, going back and forth by the hour even. We told our marriage counselor who sympathized with us on our situation and supported us.
I was reading about surgical vs medicinal. Although the pill I could do in the comfort of my own home, the idea of prolonged physical and emotional pain all while having to tend to my two kids didnt sound like a good choice for me. So I decided on surgical preemptively and would talk with the Dr at my PP appointment. At the first appointment there were protesters out front but they had someone in the parking lot escorting everyone in and out, they had an umbrella they held to block you from the protesters and vice versa and they had music on to drown out what they were saying. The first appointment they did an ultrasound to confirm and scheduled the appointment, at this time I decided to proceed with surgical and my appointment was scheduled for Saturday, two days away but it was 2 hours away. Not a big deal.
I want to note two things, I have major anxiety and emetophobia so this may sound silly but I was more afraid of the affects of the sedation than the procedure itself. But I had read some terrifying stories about how painful it was and knew I was going to get the sedation. The clinic I went to gave me fentenyl and midazolam. They do give you IV Zofran before the Fentenyl since its known to cause nausea.
The night before I was just doom scrolling through the horror stories, and the positive ones but in my head I was like "it wont be easy on me". In all the stories I read it also said your partner wasnt allowed in the room with you during the procedure.
Day of came my appointment was 1pm, I was terrified, no other way to say it. I had come to peace with my decision I was just so scared. I waited a little and they called me back to the waiting and recovery area, I immedatley saw and emesis bag and someone who looked rather pale and started panicking. My husband was with me, they usually are allowed in rhe recovery area. He held my hand, the pale girl left and i felt the tiniest bit better. I communicated to my nurse I was scared of throwing up, she looked at me like I was nuts but understood. They started the IV and the Zofran in the recovery room and then asked me if I had to use the bathroom and when I was done they were ready for me. I peed and then came back out, they told me my husband could come THANK GOD. I felt so much more calm. I also read others state it was an actual surgical suite, mine was just a room. I got undressed and laid down, the nurse pushed the sedative, for a split second the dizziness really made me panic but I took some deep breaths and it turned into sleepiness. They started, it lasted maximum 3 minutes, it was a little burning and cramping. Its a little foggy remembering but it was not nearly as bad as anticipated. And like that it was over. The nurse helped me put my underwear and pants back on, they sent me back to recovery, I didnt have any nausea. Cramping was less painful than period cramps and i had no bleeding right away. And they let me go home in 30 minutes. I was out by 3pm. I felt sleepy for like 2 hours going home and rested at home the rest of the evening but I was fine, just a little tired. I am a little over 48 hours past, cramping has remained minimal, bleeding is also minimal. I do have some slight side effects of the sudden HCG drop like sweating and such but overall normal.
That was my process begining to end, a lot of it is rambling. But I am so glad I had the support and the ability to make this choice. I am brave, YOU are brave. You are incredible. I hope this post brings you some comfort the way reading others helped me. It will all be okay 🫶🏻
