EDIT: thought it would be easier to respond to all here instead, apologies, first time poster. :) Mikasa has never had puppies, and has been spayed since she was five (I know, late!) about two years ago the vet noticed that she was producing milk even though she’s been spayed. Apparently when even just a little of the ovaries or uterus are left in the body, it messes with their hormones pretty good. Mikasa used to do this to my first dog (Wally) who was a considerable amount older than her when I got her as a puppy and Wally would get frustrated after a while of being over groomed. She never seemed to mother or play with him in anyway during cleaning, or after.
Then came Yuzu the street cat (he’s gross, but we still adore the little shit 🤣) his coat has gotten better with consistent high quality cat food + salmon oil. I.e, he’s not fresh off the streets smelling like the chicken strip we caught him with. He grooms himself consistently, but he’s still in baby mode at less than 2 so it makes sense that he thinks of her as a mom. My confusion is really just that Mikasa has never had ANY interest in any of our other three cats (4F, 11M,12F). She’s an anxious pup, so I’m happy that she’s found something that helps soothe her.

Thank you to everyone for your insight. I thought it might be mothering behavior, but just found it odd since she’s never done this with any of our other cats, had puppies nor any interest in playing with other dogs outside of my male lab, Gonzo.

My chocolate lab Mikasa (10f) has been with 3-4 other cats her entire life and has never groomed any of them. We picked up Yuzu (1M, void) a year ago this October. It started around 4 months ago, she consistently follows him around and cleans him. Her tail is wagging the entire time, she sometimes makes grunting/crying sounds while doing it. She will also bow as if trying to get him to play, but when he reciprocates she gets really confused and doesn’t know how to proceed. Does anyone else’s dog do this to their cats?

This is Gryffin. He is 13 years old screams like a banshee and is the first cat I’ve ever seen drift (he has no idea where his back legs are from a injury when he was a kitten) and he, also well, he looks like that.

They were sooo scared when they got here. I followed everything I read to keep them feel safe and calm. Lastnight they finally came in my room, let me pet them and the girl even came and sat on my lap. I love them!!

5 months ago and now they're almost the same size and chubby too

Never had a cat and his rescue warned me that he had a lot of food insecurity/anxiety so I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to handle. Well surprise surprise, I got the nicest loveliest 8 month boy of them all.

He settled into my house and got comfortable with me from the day he arrived. He’s been here for almost two weeks and from the first day he lets me carry him, cuddle, pet him and (with the help of a churu) cut his nails, not to mention he figured out how to use his electric litter box from the first time he needed to potty. Also friendly with guests!

He has almost fully stopped scratching my couch, never wakes me up in the middle of the night, so far no zoomies and doesn’t bite or scratch me except when he gets super playful and even then he won’t go overboard and stops the second I say no. He is so lovey and lovely I can’t believe my luck!!

We’re still working through the food stuff but an automatic feeder with a strict eating schedule has helped tons and I’m trying to clicker train him to sit, wait and get off counters (a work in progress but he’s getting better!!!).

Anyways just wanted to share my gratitude towards the cat gods and this beautiful boiii!

We're about to move from a 1 bedroom apartment where it's been just the two of us into a house with 2 other humans, 3 other cats, and an elderly dog.

I'm very nervous of how she will react as we've been alone for almost two years now and she has seemed to enjoy it.

Felix, aka Pig aka Big aka Big Pig, aka Fat, he is over 7kg and demands to sit on people at every chance.
