Went to a preseason game 15 years ago in AZ when it was still affordable to get up front row.

Patrick Herbert was a 2025 UDFA out of Oregon. He spent his rookie year and the 2026 preseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tight End.

Patrick stuck around the same NFL team for 16 months as a rookie UDFA before the Jaguars waived him on NFL cut day of his 2nd season (they also drafted a blocking TE in the 2nd Rd this year with their first pick in April).

Patrick Herbert is a 6'5", 255lb blocking TE that wasn't featured in the passing game with the Jaguars while he was with the team.

He was asked to block at Oregon, Jacksonville & that's what he'll be asked to do on the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad as well.

Patrick is injury insurance behind TE Charlie Kolar and FB Alec Ingold, who will be instrumental in the run game. David Njoku and Oronde Gadsden are more pass-catching TEs

Emergency FB/TE Scott Matlock is on IR and may not be activated to save the remaining return designations. (OL Branson Taylor will use 1 of 8 allowed per season)

So it makes sense to have a year 2 blocking TE on the Practice Squad, at least for the time being.

It didn't hurt to be Justin Herbert's brother, but the Chargers didn't sign Patrick out of college.

They could have given him a shot in training camp last year as a UDFA to appease Justin Herbert if that's the reason.

He happens to fill a need and be related to the star QB.
