Etiquette is kind of hilarious. People don't realize culturally it's fine to pick up Sushi with your hands. While it's 'rude' to take more than 2 bites of the sushi or to mix your wasabi and soy sauce together and turn it into a dip.
With that said I can't imagine many who work in a sushi restaurant actually care about that stuff.
I don't know if rude is the right word, but it's definitely not the way it's traditionally done. Dissolving wasabi in soy sauce weakens its heat and destroys its fresh aroma. It also leaves you unable to individually control how much wasabi and how much sauce you want on different cuts/pieces.
Yeah, actual wasabi is expensive and rare outside of Japan. If what you get is lighter, creamier, and softer than what you're used to it might actually be wasabi.
Its not impossible to farm, its difficult to farm, based on what I can find, 2 year harvest cycle, requires consistent cool temps and flowing water, not at all outside the scopes of what modern farming can handle.
My fault for not being specific, I meant it is not farmed on a large scale. The combined cost and effort mean true wasabi is not mass produced, not enough to be a regular staple at most restaurants in Japan. Most restaurants in Japan use the same stuff we get overseas.
You lay it flat on the table, or if you don’t want it touching the table, use a tiny rack to hold the tips up. Or you can also try to balance it on the top of the bowl, but this way it runs the risk of it falling off and onto the ground.
Soy sauce is not traditionally a dipping sauce, it’s a cooking ingredient. It only gets used like that in western places, I suspect because we used to overcook rice (dry) and love salt.
Nigirizushi absolutely uses shoyu as a dip. Though one should be mindful to pnly pour enough for what they're eating and only the fish should touch it.
From my experience, fancy omakase places also expect guests to pick up the sushi by hand, chopsticks are optional, little moist towel provided for cleaning your fingers too. They handle the wasabi and soy sauce if it's to be added to a specific piece.
I have never been able to use chopsticks. Later find out my FND that has been worsening and developing over the decades is responsible, degrading that motor function. And here I thought I just couldn't manipulate them for the life of me! I can hella relate
But seriously, how do you guys do it with chopsticks?
I cradle the “lower” one in the joint between my thumb and index finger, and lock that down with my ring finger, then I hold the “top” chopstick like a pen and move it with my middle finger. No idea if that’s how you’re supposed to do it, but that’s what provides me the most control and leverage for the longest period of time. I usually use them when I don’t wanna get schmutz on my fingers, I can’t stand having stuff on my hands.
I've tried doing something similar to that, but I think that demands too much bandwidth from my nerves to manage. I don't think I'm wired for chopsticks, it seems. Ah well! Not for everyone, but props to those who can use 'em :>
I could see that for seaweed-wrapped rolls, but almost all sushi I've had has sticky rice on the outside; no thanks.. (though I've been places with a small water bowl / damp towel to clean hands so maybe then, but still I view chopsticks as inherently cleaner)
Hell yeah, I love watching street food compilations on YouTube. Preferably from other countries. So much amazing stuff and my wife and I like to try to recreate (which doesn't always work. Some of those vendors move so fast).
Muy's strongest aspects in character designs is her use of colors and outfit. It can convey almost everything we need to know about a character just by looking at them.
Fun fact, sushi is largly meant to be eaten with your hands so struggling with chopsticks is entirely unnecessary. Can't help with the not know what is fish or maybe thinking she was eating raw chicken?

As someone who's been mentally locked in on the stuff I like to eat, I've been trying to expand my palate where I can these last few years, biggest self rule is avoiding the default "burger", or in this case the "mozzarella sticks", option. But with the follow up of making sure I understand each ingredient in the meal description.
Turns out, I like a lot more variety of cheeses than I thought.
That said, River Chicken is just deceptive. Who does that?
Barf bag? She thought she was eating RAW CHICKEN and was fine with that. She must have an iron stomach. Me on the other hand will now need that barf bag.
Her stomach may be iron, but her head is quite the different matter.
A lot of gagging (especially for Fani) is psychological. I have heard of ex-Jews and ex-Muslims gagging on their first bite of bacon, and that people from India might gag at the thought of eating partially digested milk with mold growing on it.
People been over cooking your fish. I like to broil mine in butter and lemon juice with onion slices covering the top to keep it moist. Really hard to get that sweet spot between under and over cooked but really worth it. I bought a meat thermometer just to get it right.
I dated a girl who said sushi was an aphrodisiac for her. I had never had sushi before, but I took her to a nice place with the expectation of getting laid afterwards.
I got violently ill from the food, so sex was not on the menu that night.
Can't help the river fish, but to anyone nervous about trying sushi who can't use chopsticks, I'm pretty sure it is not frowned upon to eat with your fingers. I know my way around chopsticks to a solidly "okay" extent, but when it inevitably falls apart, gotta resort to the tried and true fingies.
The funny thing is that you're not even supposed to use chopsticks when eating sushi...makes you look silly. Don't get mad at me lol literal Japanese sushi master chefs say this...
Am I the only one who finds it very irritating how the comics appear completely out of order, so there's no functional storytelling to follow just by checking this sub?
It feels like this is jumping through 5 different time periods without giving an idea of where and when and why we are. No other comic series in this sub does that.
