Resolved Struggling to understand GHz in processors

I have the general gist of what GHz are and what they do but I’m still stuck on understanding them fully.

I know that 3.5 GHz is just 3.5 Billion clock cycles per second and those handle instructions. This is hyperbole, but let’s say the CPU was sent 4 instructions, would they do those 4 instructions 3.5 Billion times a second or is it 3.5 Billion chances at completing that instruction?

Am I missing something or am I taking it too literal? I’m having a difficult time visualising how that process would actually work.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting About my pc case

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’d like to ask for a recommendation from people who really know their stuff. I really like cases with built-in displays—I want a computer case with a built-in screen where I can view metrics like the computer’s temperature. When I look at cases with built-in displays, they cost around $200 in my country; they’re probably not the highest quality, but they’ll get the job done. But then I had an idea: what if I got something like a James Donkey portable monitor, mounted it inside a case I like, and fed the signal from my graphics card? That way, I’d essentially have a built-in screen, and this method would also cost around $200—plus I’d get a bigger screen. It probably won’t look as sleek as a pre-built setup, but if I can put it together properly, it looks like it’ll turn out pretty well. So, which do you think is better? Or if anyone has other good suggestions, I’m open to them. Let’s assume there are no issues with outputting the video or with my system’s capabilities. The only concern I have is whether building it myself might cause a technical issue, like overheating the inside of the case. I’ve seen some small screens that attach to the graphics card or are supported by it, but I didn’t like them because they’re too small. My 12-year-old brother told me that if I get him a screen with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi, he could build one for me exactly the way I want it, but I don’t really know much about these things.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 died. What kind of adapter would work for me to save the files on my SSD?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello, my IdeaPad recently died. I have a new laptop now, but there are still files on this one I’d like to recover from the SSD.

Is there a certain adapter that works best for this? This is my first time doing this so I’m not sure if it’s one size fits all, or if there’s a specific one that works best.

Thanks!

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Remotely accessing desktop.

Upvotes

Long story short, I will need a new laptop for my engineering studies (Mainly machine learning).
The thing is, I have a relatively strong desktop at home (AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 5070Ti etc).
I am wondering whether I should buy a gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU or simply go for something like an Ultrabook and remotely access my desktop by apps like Parsec or such. Is the latter option even practical ? Appreciate your help

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Computer Recommendations

So I need a laptop for school, there was an incident with my cat this morning and I broke mine. It’s already old so it makes more sense to replace than to fix

Price Range: nothing over $600 I’d consider something closer to $700 if it’s an absolute gem for the price

Uses: full time online college coursework, light to moderate gaming

Requirements: must be able to run the most recent version of windows, something that won’t take a poo within the next four years

My computer knowledge: I don’t know anything about computer hardware and how it handles software.

I’d appreciate any and all advice possible, I’ve been considering a cheap gaming laptop as I figured if it can handle gaming it could handle gaming and school. I’ve not had much time for research as mine broke this morning

Question/Help/Troubleshooting DP not working

Yesterday both my monitors (1 hdmi, 1dp) were working perfectly. Today I boot up my pc and only my hdmi monitor is working. The dp one is on and simply shows "no signal" (photo 1).

After checking the cables multiple times and trying the 3 dp output of my graphics card (Radeon RX 6600, photo 2, 1 hdmi and 3 dp outputs) (dont mind the dust please, i know i need to clean my pc), I plugged this monitor in hdmi and it works, i fear my gpu's dp outputs are dead :/

The monitor is a Samsung S24C330GAU and has both dp and hdmi input

The second monitor is a 24" PIXL (i dont have the exact model, sorry) and doesnt have a dp input

Please tell me it isnt as bad as I think it i dont have the money to buy a gpu 🙏

Btw I will only be able so answer in about 9 hours because work and sleep, thanks for your understanding

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Need help replacing s10+ with small laptop for art editing

I bought an s10+ a few months ago that I wanted to use for art editing. Unfortunately, I really don't like any of the editing apps in the google play store so this expensive tablet has become more of a time wasting/yt machine.
I can trade it in for ~375 at Best buy where I had bought it. There's a touchscreen laptop I'm interested in, but I'm also worried that it won't be strong enough for Affinity (the program I use for edits)
ASUS - Upgraded - 11.6" 2-in-1 Touch Laptop,Intel Celeron N100,4GB RAM,256GB SSD+1TB Dock Set,Intel UHD Graphics,Win 11 Pro - Gray <the one I'm looking at

I'm aiming to spend as close as I can to my trade in value, as I've already lost money just by not returning this tablet immediately. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
My current laptop is 17" and a pain to move around, so a smaller model would be ideal for me. I also got it in 2017 so it's quite old anyway. I use it for gaming, so don't necessarily need the work laptop to be able to run games. I would like a lot of space (256-1tb) for files.

Thanks!

Discussion Guys which laptop to buy pls solve my problem guysss

I wanted to buy macbook air m5 at 1 lakh 10 k inr, but after apple price increase its costing 1.5L so that's out of question now after a lot of research I am stuck between 3 laptops, apple macbook neo 512gb variant (80k with student id) , samsung book 5 base model 512gb, asus vivobooo s14 512gb

My use case is pretty basic, watch video lectures, netflix and basic laptop everyday needs that's it...I am going to medical school...so I would want a laptop that stays with for a good time and doesn't give me trouble....I want a metal/aluminium build only, NO PLASTIC body at all..I am sick of it

I have a samsung ecosystem (s9 fe plus tab and Samsung phone s23) but apple is apple so I am stuck in this decision

Requirements:

512gb

16gb (can compromise with 8gb as well)

Screen quality should be good

Good battery life

Metal/aluminium build

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Flickering lines

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After a few minutes of my secondary monitor suddenly going white, my main monitor suddenly started flickering lines. I do not know if it's a monitor issue or a GPU issue. The video is the flickering lines. Which happens when playing videos on Youtube and when I am on my desktop with my wallpaper from Wallpaper engine.

ALSO: my GPU has LED lights where it says "AERO" - it's not turning on, common issue of these Gigabyte GPUs as I've noticed.

PC SPECS:

Ryzen 5 5600x
RTX 4060 Gigabyte AERO 8GB
16gb DDR4 RAM

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Should I replace my GPU or my entire PC?

My PC was custom-built by my brother around 2019–2020 and lately I’ve been having random crashes/black screens, mostly while playing Overwatch. Specs are Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX 2060 6GB, 16GB RAM, 2560×1440 monitor at 59Hz, and Windows 10. Overwatch originally started crashing pretty consistently after about 5–6 minutes, with the PC itself still running but the game crashing and monitor losing signal (“No DP signal”/“No HDMI signal”). I had the thermal paste replaced because I thought overheating might be the issue, and after getting the thermal paste replaced, the crashes became more random instead of happening consistently, but they didn’t completely stop. It’s also happened while playing Roblox and The Sims 4, so it isn’t only Overwatch. I’ve reinstalled/updated NVIDIA drivers, reinstalled Overwatch, disabled NVIDIA Overlay, lowered settings, capped FPS, and tried borderless windowed. Windows has also logged NVIDIA Overlay/libcef.dll and dwm.exe errors, and I eventually got a BugCheck 0x0000003B crash with a MEMORY.DMP. My GPU has reached around 82°C under load, and playing with the glass side panel off seems to help somewhat. A PC technician recommended upgrading to Windows 11 and eventually upgrading the GPU. I mainly play Overwatch, Sims 4 with mods, Minecraft and Roblox, and I’d also like to use After Effects/video editing. At this point, would it make more sense to upgrade the GPU/other parts, or should I just replace the entire PC?

Resolved Lost power and desktop wont get internet signal from ethernet or wifi?

As title says, lost power in the middle of the night and got it back about 20 minutes ago. Upon booting up my pc, I have zero internet while every single other device in my house, using ethernet or wifi, is working perfectly fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled network adapter drivers, did a flea power drain, reset all my ip config settings and cleared network cache, reset my entire network system in settings, have restarted multiple times and still nothing. What could possibly be the issue?

Edit: Solved it myself. One of the windows internet firewalls was crashing all internet traffic. I disabled all firewalls and brought them back one by one and now it works.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting RTX 3060 INTERMITTENT NO DISPLAY / BLACK SCREEN

Hi everyone,
I’m having a strange issue with my PC and I’m trying to figure out if my GPU is dying.

Specs:
Ryzen 5 5600X
RTX 3060 Zotac Twin Edge 12GB
Gigabyte B550M DS3H
DeepCool PK650D PSU
Lexar 16gb ddr4 3200 MHz single stick

Issue:
The PC will often boot normally if it has been completely powered off for 2–3+ hours. It’ll reach Windows, and everything seems fine. However, after about 15–20 seconds, the screen suddenly goes black.
After I force shut down and try to restart:
No display output
Keyboard and mouse don’t power on
All fans spin normally, including GPU fans
Sometimes after leaving the PC off for several hours, it will boot again and repeat the same behavior.

Things I’ve tried:
Updated motherboard BIOS
Reseated the GPU
Checked/reconnected GPU power cables
Tried multiple restarts
Ran FurMark when the GPU was working (around 80°C core, 91°C hotspot, no artifacts or crashes)

Once the PC boots successfully, I can sometimes game normally without any noticeable issues
Has anyone experienced something similar? Does this sound like a failing GPU, VRAM issue, power delivery problem, or something else?

Where do you find things like icon creators and app editors, like you would on a phone but for a PC? I want to install it. I guess it's an APK for the computer? Where I can customize the layout.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting My zephyrus m16 gaming laptop shuts off suddenly

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently took my rog zephyrus m16 2021 to the repair shop for a faulty fan motor on the cpu side. The repair shop ordered a new one and sent me back home till the replacement arrives. The fan itself still works but vibrates the whole laptop when on full throttle so they suggested me to not to any heavy gaming till the replacement arrives.
Now back at home when i try to turn on my zephyrus it shuts off immediately before it even reaches the windows boot screen. After a few minutes i tried again and it actually booted this time until it ultimately shut off a few seconds later.
One key thing i noticed was that the heat sensor indicator thingy said a 100 celsius when i managed to peek at it when it booted into windows.
Ive tried reseating the battery but that didnt do anything.
What should i do???? The repair shop is closed for the next 2 days.
Exact specs:
rtx 3060 6gb
I7 11th gen processor
16 gb of ddr4
