General Advice Needed/Given Being a freshman is really hard

Upvotes

sorry for the long paragraph

Yesterday I woke up, excited for my first day of high school. but, everything went so wrong. I was originally a loner and I wanted to make new friends this school year. But everyone is just so hard to talk to. I want to talk to the popular girls and be like them. They are so nice and outgoing and I’m a nobody. Today, I started small and started making small talk with other people without friends. I was honestly hoping to becoming someone’s first friend but they have other friends outside their classes. It’s literally just me who doesn’t have friends in this entire school. Today I sat alone in the cafeteria with no one. But, I did meet this girl who is really nice and I’m going to sit at her table tomorrow. But everything else is stressing me out. And also, on my bus literally every seat in the middle was taken. So I had to sit all by myself in the back. And when it got to my stop, I had to walk down so many aisles. I even tripped on something on my way to the front. I saw some people who were alone sitting on the bus so I’m going to ask them if I can sit next to them next time. But I’m scared because my social battery drains fast. I wonder if I’m better of as a loner or making new friends. It’s so stressful, what do I do? How do I keep my social battery up?? I am genuinely stressing out.

College Advice Needed/Given Starting high school, don't play an instrument. If I start now, can I get good enough for a (partial) scholarship in time?

Upvotes

Only played 2 years of various different instruments in 5th and 6th grade. Is there any hope for me getting a scholarship if I start a new instrument?

(And yes I'm only doing this for a scholarship, I don't care for music)

School Related Really hard decision coming in about a month—thoughts?

Upvotes

Hi all, I am a sophomore in high school and my school offers this very cool thing to sophomores. So basically, if you qualify (which I do) you can go to college early at community college for only $500 a year, everything outside of food covered. So it would be during junior and senior year. I would take stats and college algebra for math, some sort of English, biology, Spanish, and the other requirements. I would be only taking bio and Spanish at the college, and the rest at my high school. Which brings me to what it actually is. For junior year, I get to go to the community college from 1st to 4th period, and then I go back to high school during lunch for 5th-8th period. Then senior year, I only go to Harper but I can still participate in activities at the high school. It would be from 8am to 12:15 pm, so much shorter which would be great. My worries are that I will miss out on high school, and I will miss my friends and won’t get to see them as often, given that I’ll be taking college classes in college and high school. I’m a good student, so I would be fine grade wise, but once you commit to it, there’s no going back. If yall need more info to get a better opinion on this please ask, but I am just so stuck on what to choose. I am also very blessed my school does this and that it’s very inexpensive for my associates degree. Also, I am indecisive on a major I would like to take later on. All the help is appreciated!

General Advice Needed/Given just some quick advice needed to those knowledgeable! (seniors maybe?)

Upvotes

I just need a bit of advice. so I’m taking 4 aps sophomore year, (sem, apes, art history, and gov)

my gpa is a 4.4 and im 7% in the top of the class

I want to major in bio (patent law) so I’m lowkey worried tis like off, but line my extracurriculars are art and I love history.

but by the time I finish highschool I have done calc ab, ap bio, and ap chem, so idk if this is like evening it out. they just don’t let sophomores start doing aps until they take honors chem so I am doing two sciences this year.

Also a bit worried about my extracurriculars, I’m apart of a mental health union club of my school, vice prez of the creative writing club, joining science olympiad, and assistant stage manager is the award winning musicals and play— (but I’ll be head in like a year)

im also writing a two novels, one on poetry and another fantasy one. and building a website for teen writers.. and writing research to cold email to professors. Submitting to the scholastic writing award as well.

additionally, I may start playing violin, idk if I’ll join orchestra bc it may look random. or do vocal lessons so I can do caberet (musical theatre festival)..

Idk if this all looks random for a bio major lol, what should I drop and any advice on what to add?

General Advice Needed/Given I’m so fucking scared Yall

Upvotes

Kinda a rant sorry if this isn’t allowed

I’m an alternative and queer teen. In about 12 hours I will be on my way to school. I’m terrified. It’s a tech high school so maybe it won’t be horrible. But so many bad kids got in.

I also really struggle with mental health. Ive been struggling since 4th grade but in recent years it’s gotten worse

So uh any tips/recommendations for me? Anyone can answer but other queer/alt people would probably be more helpful

General Advice Needed/Given Drop AP Physics 1?

Upvotes

Junior year of high school and im very busy, I'm doing a lot of clubs and im also doing EMT school which is twice a week from 6-10pm after school. Now I've heard ALOT about stuff from AP Physics and how terrible it is, but at the same time I want the course rigor, should I drop it? I've heard from smart people who are rising juniors who told me to drop it, and the class itself only has 16 people out of a really large grade, compared to other classes which have way higher student counts, and she literately stated that she expects their to be less then 16 people by the end of the month. From your experiences do you guys think its worth taking it? Or should I just drop it already? Or wait and drop it during the first quarter since it won't show up in my transcript that I dropped the class in the first quarter BUT the grade I had when I drop it will carry.

School Related College application season

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’ve been around this sub for a long time and know exactly how brutal college application season is. Seeing my younger friends and family members completely drown in essays, deadlines, and anxiety broke me. Most trackers just pile on more to-do lists, but they ignore the mental toll. So, I spent the last few months building a free, private wellness tracker and daily affirmation space just to help them cope. I realized it might help some of you out, too. Not dropping any links out of respect for sub rules, but drop a comment or shoot me a DM if you want to try it out. Hang in there.

Question Where can I find internships/ programs for the summer?

Upvotes

I genuinely don’t know where or how people find internships or programs that happen in the summer for high school students. Does anyone know where to find them? Also I would prefer if they were business related and not a 10k for seven days at a university thing.

College Advice Needed/Given What should I do?

I’m kind of conflicted right now. I’m a sophomore this year, and it just hit me that I should start thinking about what colleges I want to go to. I would really love to go to a T20 school (doesn’t have to be Ivy League) and my dream school is either MIT or Stanford. I already have a really good GPA and take as much AP’s and Honors as possible. I also play the piano competitively and joined a club at school to volunteer for kids in need.

I keep seeing videos of these high school students doing some major research work or starting a massive nationwide nonprofits just to get accepted to their t20 or Ivy League schools. I’ve been thinking about contacting a local professor for their help on a research project I want to start, but I don’t think that’ll be enough for me to stand out. What should I do?

Rant Poetry is the worst topic I have ever had compared to all the topics and all subjects I ever had in my school (I accept opinions against this)

Look, I know poetry would be interesting to learn, but me and my classmates just don't get on it.

  1. The language in poems is way too confusing, and we usually don't get it when we read it at the 1st time. We have it on English literature, and English is not my native language. The teacher explains what is trying to say, and I sometimes understand, but still, is confusing.

  2. The literary devices. They make the text richer, but in practice they just feel like a list to memorize.

  3. PEAs. If you don't know what it is, is Point, Evidence and Analysis. It's a paragraph that their structure is obligatory that you should follow, but that only cuts creativity, and every single answer just ends to be too repetitive, even if the poem changes.

I might know some people like poetry, but this just doesn't connect with me and my classmates. What is your opinion on poetry? And what do you think I am saying? You agree or disagree?

General Advice Needed/Given PLS HELP

IM STARTING HIGHSCHOOL TOMORROW (I didn't go the first day) I'm genuinely about to cry, people from the same study program found people online (including me) and they already made friends! What I'm most terrified about is the stupid tests. Those aren't graded, just for teachers to see how the students are doing. AND I CANT DO IT I DONT REMEMBER ANYTHING oh the embarrassment I'm gonna have if she reads the scores out loud. I genuinely NEED advice what do i do?! What if i have no one to sit with? What if my class is full of mean people? The worst thoughts are running through my mind. I'm scared people on day one already made friends while I wasn't there. People always tell me "it's okay, everyone is nervous!" Yes,but they already made their nervous friends.. probably. I just need advice on what do I DO and tips I guess

General Advice Needed/Given How do I focus and study for exams?

I'm terrible at focusing and I'm having exams right now and I really need to lock in and start studying but it's just not happening :/ i keep doomscrolling on social media or just talking to people. I'm in 12th grade btw.

This is honestly getting pretty bad for me 😭 I've had to stay up till 5 am to study because I didn't study beforehand and i just want everyone's best ways to focus and study. I also suspect I have ADHD but I can't get it diagnosed till I'm in college unfortunately.

Please drop any good ways to focus! I have tried many methods but they haven't really helped.
