He's not winging it though. This approach is based in some solid knowledge.
He's perhaps a bit fidgety and would have been successful at the very first attempt if he didn't panic. But, he's also dealing with the world's largest venomous snake, in the field, in a cramped space in less than ideal conditions and the sped up video does him absolutely no favours.
Is he the best? No.
Is he good? Debatable.
But does he know what he's doing? Yes.

Yep. Forest department doesn't like him parading the snakes or getting himself bitten countless times. Went to ICU, ventilator and got bitten way too many times.
Better methods exist to handle snakes. But, he has done a lot of awareness, education and rescue work as well.

Some comments are asking, "Is it common in India to handle snakes". Let me tell you, its not.
These people are called "Sarpa Mitra" (Snake's friend) who are trained how to handle snake and even first aid in case of snake bites. Many people from small rural village get the trainings because snakes coming to houses are common when the land gets dry and hot.
I have certain cousins who got this training because they work in the field. The training mainly includes how to identify types of snakes and how to rescue these snakes and put them back into the forest or wherever.
Note, they're called "Snake's friends" to sensitize the taboo around snakes, and the process is called "snake rescue" rather than "human rescue."

Our house itself has had quite a few snake encounters, more than 10 in the last couple of years though 8/10 times the snakes left on their own, so yeah, most of the time Indians do not need to handle snakes.

Unrelated but interesting - ‘sarpa’ and ‘serpent’ sounded too familiar to be coincidence so I looked it up. These two words go back to the Proto-Indo-European root ‘serp’ meaning ‘to crawl’. This became Sanskrit ‘sarpa’, vs Latin ‘serpens’ which eventually became English ‘serpent’ (with variations in other Latin-based modern languages).

Funny story - when I was a kid, a literal toddler, I caught a baby cobra that was passing through my rented house's drain. My mum was sleeping and I brought it to show her, safe to assume she was absolutely terrified of what I was holding in my hands. The locals came and unfortunately killed the baby cobra.
Since that day, my mum would tie my leg with a rope with hers which was long enough to let me play in the room while she slept.

You might be confused by the fact that no (or very little) antivenom exists for cobras in the US. Most hospitals only keep antivenom on hand for local species, since it is difficult to produce and expires fairly quickly.

Any zoo that keeps cobras also keeps stock of antivenom for those cobras and generally speaking they are pretty good about being generous with it on the off chance that someone gets bitten outside of the zoo. And antivenom is powder that can last a decade. Only after it's reconstituted with water does it have that short expiration date.

That's because of how much venom they inject with a bite, not how deadly the substance is. "Most venomous" is usually used to describe the toxicity of the venom the snake creates. King Cobra venom is on the lower end of the toxicity scale, they're just huge, so they carry a lot of it and a bite injects significantly more venom than most venomous snakes.
TLDR: deadliest ≠ most venomous

I only know this because in a small town in Zimbabwe (where I'm from) during the land reform one of the fleeing whites had a snake collection and let them loose on his farm... We brought a house in the area and learnt of this aftern finding a king cobra and her eggs in the drain pipes 😮💨
None of the workers had the balls to deal with it and it's not nationally protected (that's what they said) so they threw hot water down all the sinks and pipes going to that drain.

There's a reason India has 50,000 snake bite deaths per year, which is roughly half of all snake bit deaths in the world.
Edit for the sake of those who think I am casting aspersions with regards to India or Indians:
My original comment wasn't to suggest this guy was foolish, rather that India is infested with highly venomous snakes, which increases the likelihood of people being bitten by said snakes, either purely through random encounter, or in scenarios like this where somebody is bravely trying to move the snake to a more appropriate area, away from people.

finally someone said it. Our anti-venom infrastructure is the worst to top it. Most death occur due to lack of anti-venom of the snakes outside the big-4. Our polyvalent only works on the big 4 but India still has 100s of venomous species with region specific

Yeah, to be completely 100% clear, I don't think people in India get bitten because they are foolish. If anything, I bet the average Indian has a heightened awareness of how dangerous their local snakes are.
I am fortunate enough to live somewhere that nothing that lives in nature is of any real threat to me, I cannot speak from experience.
The per-capita in India is around 4 deaths per year per 100,000 people. In most of the west the number is very close to 0, and very few countries globally break the 2 mark, most of them being in South Asia or Africa, a few being in South America.
The guy in the video doesn't look foolish, he looks like he has a plan, knows what he is doing, and is braver than most.

Not really, no. Snake jaws require access to get at least somewhat around what they are biting in order to inject venom, and strikes are actually generally not very accurate, so strikes in a darkened, confined space have almost zero chance of landing. The snake will also generally be subdued by the bagging.

People who handle venomous snakes regularly, even those who are extremely cautious, quite often get bitten. Most of them are sensible enough to have the species-appropriate antivenom on hand, or nearby enough.
In India, well, the statistics speak for themselves. The country is packed with highly venomous snakes in some regions, and antivenom access is very variable, because India is huge and antivenom requires refrigeration, and replacement within months or a few years.

Met one of these on a hiking path, I think we both surprised each other, only his reflexes were ... a bit faster than mine. I was looking at my right hand to check if I had picked up some spider web because it felt like it - by the time I turned to the left side, he flexed the hood, hissed and basically glided several yards away from me within a second. He was less than a yard away from me when HE noticed me, he could have easily destroyed me, thank god he chose to get away. He seemed like a very long and intelligent quadriceps muscle. I would have definitely lost that arm wrestle.
It was typhoon season so the hiking path was quite empty but I did see a bunch of lizards around, he might have been hunting them and that's why he didn't notice me until I was basically in kissing distance. Anyway, it was a small mountain and I usually just go to the top and come back the same way. I started clapping my hands because all I know about snakes is they might hear any kind of vibrations. I never saw him again, but I can't stop thinking about this encounter.
I've seen plenty of snakes, one of which actually started slithering towards me and then disappearing into some bushes and I hit a huge snake crossing a biking path with my rear wheel because I noticed it too late but I can't stop thinking about the king cobra and get goosebumps every time. Watching this guy basically taunting this huge scary thing seems unbelievable.

They are among the smartest species of snakes.
But you have to understand that snakes are afraid of humans (except maybe anacondas and a few pythons that can see us as potential food). So this snake is basically shitting himself right now. The hood of cobras and king cobras are literally a sign that tells other animals "leave me alone or I'll bite you". The snake wants safety, it wants shelter.
That's when the bag and the pipe come into play. It is a shelter. Honestly if the guy had simply put the bag down the snake might have come in even quicker than that. The idea that the bag might be a way for another animal to carry you somewhere else is a concept completely foreign to animals that are not used to humans, and even then it's still hard to comprehend.
So no it's not particularly dumb here.
But one thing to consider is that king cobras are the top of the food chain (except cats). They eat other snakes including true cobras (hence the name "king"). It it came here that means that there are other snakes in or near this house. And if those snakes came here that means that there is also probably a rodent infestation.

Boss i want everyone to look up vava suresh on yt or whatever. He catches these things barehanded with no tools and no safety precautions. When u like see a snake here in kerala (state in south india) he pulls up and catches it. Then releases it into its natural habitat.
There are clips of him kissing the hoods of cobras and some other crazy shit. And yes he has been bitten several times and i believe he lost a finger or two over the years. His body has developed some resistance to these venom u can read up about it.
