I’m sacrificing the 1tb of Storage for 24gb of Ram on the MacBook Air M5. Is that worth it?
It sets it down to 1,500 instead of the 1,800 or +300 dollars for 1tb of storage when I could just get a ExHD, is this worth it or no?

What is the most capable best value older macbook for me to purchase?
So i am on a fairly tight budget. I have a 2017 macbook air that still works ok but it getting slow now and seems to always run out of memory and I have to restart firefox or some of my other apps. I also only have 250gb of memory which is too little for my needs so looking at 500gb-1tb. Is there a particular macbook model or internal processor model that is a few years old now that I should be focusing on buying that is better than others? I know a number of years ago I purchased an iphone X and it continued to have impressive numbers and display for years after it was released compared to the latest iphone of the time, so something like that. I do a little bit of everything like some mild video editing, photo editing, and research to write a book but nothing that is super graphics demanding, just need a good solid all around laptop on a budget. Thanks so much

Do I wait for M6 or get M5 now?
Hi guys, it's gonna be my first MacBook, so I have no clue whether the change is big or small with the new gen, and how pricing works. Will the previous generation become cheaper as the new one drops, or will nothing change much and I should just get M5 now? Thanks!

Which MacBook would you recommend for AI-assisted coding, web development and app development?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on which MacBook would make the most sense for my use case.
Most of what I do is related to web development, app development, programming and AI-assisted/vibe coding. I use AI tools quite heavily while building projects, and I usually have multiple browser tabs, development tools and other applications running at the same time.
I may also do some light video editing in the future, but that’s definitely not my main priority right now.
I was considering a MacBook Pro M5 with 28 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, but I’m not sure whether that configuration is overkill, underpowered, or actually the sweet spot for what I do.
I’m also wondering whether a MacBook Air could realistically handle this kind of workload well, or if the Pro would be the better long-term choice.
One important thing: I’m not in a rush to buy it. My current laptop is still working well, so I could easily wait until the next MacBook generation if there’s a meaningful upgrade expected later this year or early next year.
So I’d love to hear your thoughts:
- Which MacBook/configuration would you choose for this workload?
- Is 28 GB RAM + 1 TB a good choice?
- Pro or Air?
- Would you buy now or wait for the next generation?
Thanks!

Ubuntu on an old MacBook - AI is life changing
I hope this post is MacBook enough
I've dabbled with Linux for 30 years just becasue i liked the reliability. I don't do anything tricky and i never really learned the linux-nerd stuff. But i could get a tired old Lenovo to run Ubuntu pretty happily.
A couple years ago i switched to MacBook and it's been nice but my current Machine is stuck at Monterey and i did not want to upgrade so i looked at htthe e Linux option again.
This is where Chat GPT really made a difference. There are a lot of problems to solve in getting Linux working and if you'tr just a user it can be a big lift.
But this is where ChatGPT really shines. It just spits out the commands you need to run to get everything working: partitioning, wifi, BlueTooth etc.
I hope someone finds this post useful

Bought a "factory-sealed" MacBook Pro 16" — its own logs show it was powered on once, 64 days before I set it up. Did Apple or the reseller do it?
I bought this MacBook Pro 16" (M5 Pro, 48 GB) as BRAND NEW / SEALED from a local reseller at full new price. Box looked factory-sealed, nothing inside looked disturbed. I set it up on Aug 30, 2026. Then I checked the logs. I need expert opinions on what happened before me.
THE MACHINE (all verified on the unit itself)
- MacBook Pro 16", Apple M5 Pro (18-core), 48 GB, model identifier Mac17,8
- Order code: MGE64LL/A (US-market configuration)
- Serial: J3CXPF2W56
- Battery serial: F5DHSY005TS0000VDA - 3 charge cycles, 100% health (rated 1000 cycles)
- Charger as shipped: genuine Apple 140W USB-C (serial C4H621502PMQ41CAQ)
- Shipped on macOS 26.5.1 (factory image mastered May 21, 2026), now on 26.6.2
- No MDM/DEP enrollment (not ex-corporate). Single user account. No wipe/reinstall markers - log history runs unbroken from the very first boot to today.
THE 6-MINUTE SESSION ON JUNE 27, 2026
(Note: timestamps are in -07 because the machine was still on its factory-default Pacific clock - region was never chosen. So -07 does not prove physical location.)
- 09:29:26 -07 - first line ever written in /var/log/install.log. The boot ledger starts 4 seconds earlier: "wtmp begins Sat Jun 27 22:29:22 +06 2026" (that line renders in my local timezone; same moment).
- 09:29:33 -07 - the Hello screen (Language Chooser) starts. Wi-Fi scan finds NO networks.
- 09:31:12 -07 - "User input detected: Mac plugged in, cancelling shutdown timer" - someone connected the charger mid-session. ZERO keyboard/trackpad input was ever recorded in this session.
- 09:31:44 -07 - GarageBand / MAContent asset packs auto-staging (normal offline first-boot staging from the factory image; no Apple ID, no network).
- 09:34:59 -07 - the Mac restarts itself once (normal first-boot behavior; second BOOT_TIME recorded in hardware: 1782578099).
- 09:35:15 -07 - last activity ever. No shutdown record = force-powered-off (power button held).
Total uptime: 5 minutes 53 seconds across two boots. No login, no account, no language ever selected.
THEN 64 DAYS OF NOTHING
- /var/log/install.log contains exactly three dates: 2026-06-27, 2026-08-30, 2026-08-31. The last June 27 line (line 3366) is followed immediately by Aug 30 (line 3367).
- The boot ledger (last/wtmp) shows zero events between June 27 and Aug 30. No boots, no logins, nothing.
AUGUST 30, 2026 - ME, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER
- 19:23:13 (+06, my local time) - "hello started"
- 19:23:18 - "User input detected: mouse moved" - the first human touch ever recorded on this Mac (mine)
- 19:24-19:27 - Setup Assistant runs (_mbsetupuser session); /var/db/.AppleSetupDone created 19:27:57
- No other username has ever logged in (deleted accounts would still appear in the boot ledger - none do).
APPLE'S OWN RECORD
- checkcoverage.apple.com shows warranty until Aug 29, 2027 - anchored to MY purchase date. So Apple's servers have no earlier activation, consistent with the June session never connecting to any Wi-Fi.
MY QUESTIONS
Does Apple's factory QC ever boot a finished retail unit to the customer Hello screen ~5 weeks AFTER the factory image was mastered (May 21 -> June 27), and then force it off? Or does a truly factory-sealed Mac's install.log begin with the customer's own first boot?
If not Apple: is "charger plugged in, no input, forced off after 6 minutes" consistent with an importer/reseller bench test - i.e., a US unit opened, tested, re-packed and re-sealed before export?
Is there ANY way to tell where the June 27 boot happened, given the machine was on factory-default clock and never touched a network?
Anything else I can check locally to narrow down who did it?
TL;DR: Sold as sealed new. The Mac's own logs prove it was opened and powered on once - 6 minutes, Hello screen only, charger plugged in, forced off - 64 days before my setup. Battery at 3 cycles, no prior accounts, no wipe, Apple warranty starts with me. Apple factory QC, or the seller's chain? If you work in Mac repair, retail, or QC, I'd genuinely value your read. Happy to paste more log lines on request.

What Mac to get
Hello. I want to get a MacBook, I am currently searching for M1, M2 air, and Neo 512 gb. I would use it for university so I need a good battery, won’t really play anything that is demanding. I live in Central America so the prices are kinda inflated here. I saw an m1 8gb 256gb new for 558, but am worried of future support via updated. A neo 512gb new for 763. A couple of m2 8gb 256 for around 663-850.

Surprised how my Macbook Pro 2017 is still perfect but should I still upgrade
Hi guys!
I am a productive student who loves to code and use apps like obsidian as my own workspace. I use this really old macbook pro 2017 (without a Touch Bar) with the following specs in the image and I am surprised it handles discord, VS code, google classroom, gemini, Obsidian, and chrome with 5-6 light to moderate tabs without overloading RAM or CPU power dropping or even fans turning on. Everything is incredibly smooth except the fact that my 128GB SSD is too small and the battery sucks.
But I still don't know whether to upgrade to a new macbook or not. I need your advice.

Minor discoloration/oxidation on MacBook purchased from Croma(India) — will it affect my warranty?
I purchased my MacBook from Croma in India this month and recently noticed this minor discoloration/possible oxidation on the body.
I noticed it after a few days, and there has been no physical damage or unusual exposure.
One thing I’m wondering: what if the MacBook had some physical damage before I purchased it, which caused this mark and possibly affected something internally? I obviously wouldn’t know if that happened before I bought it.
If this turns out to be a manufacturing defect, could it affect my 1-year Apple warranty if I face another issue with the MacBook in the future? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Buying refurbrished macbook worth it?
Given that the latest macbook air is of almost Rs 1.5 lac, I am thinking about buying a used smaller version maybe m3 pro or m4 air. But is it worth it? What should I consider while buying refurbished macbook.
Just a context about my use case - mainly coding and streaming videos. Some possibility of gaming that to is not very often.

Macbook Cases
Just got a new macbook neo (exciting!) and was looking into getting a case. I’ve had a case on my air for the past 6 years and haven’t had any issues with my computer itself, just replacing the case when it gets worn out (only had to replace once).
But i’ve read some things about cases being bad for the laptop. I’d love to hear why, as I ofc want to take care of my tech. I like having one less for protection reasons (though that is nice, i can be clumsy) but also because I like putting stickers on my laptop, but hate the idea of putting it straight on the laptop so I like the case being a barrier. Would love to hear any input though!

Should I switch to a 15 inch?
Hi folks, I’m sure this question gets asked a lot. I’m about to replace 7 year old 13 inch MacBook Pro with an Air. I mostly do light work but a lot of writing. At home I have a dock with a stand, external keyboard, and monitor as my main workstation, and I do light travel and commuting with it.
I feel like I’m talking myself into a 15 inch when I perhaps don’t need it, and wanted to get some of your takes.
Portability IS a factor and some of my bags are already set up with 13-14 inch sleeves but I do have an Aer that could accommodate a 15 inch.
As I say at home I mostly work on an external second monitor so it isn’t like the 13 inch is the only thing I look at.
I feel like I’m over thinking it and I should just stick with a 13 inch because it’s more or less worked for me, but wanted to get other people’s takes about moving to a 15 inch. Thanks

Smudge? Won’t come off M5 Mac book pro
Bought this m5 MacBook Pro less than two weeks ago at best buy and finally got around to cleaning the screen with a proper micro fiber cloth. I’ve been wiping it over and over and it won’t seem to come off. I’m worried it’s damage at this point considering the cost is way too high for it to be already in bad shape. If anybody recognizes the same smudge and can help me fix it I would appreciate any help.

Think to buy macbook
Hello, friends. I’m a computer enthusiast, and computers have been my hobby for more than 15 years. I’ve never tried a Mac before, but I really want to. The only thing stopping me right now is that I genuinely don’t know whether it’s worth the money.
I’m not a programmer, and I don’t make videos. I would mainly use it for YouTube, browsing the internet, working with documents, and playing the occasional light game. I already have a gaming PC, but I don’t really play games on it anymore.
Overall, I think I would simply enjoy the convenience of having a laptop that I can take with me anywhere. But please tell me, do you think a MacBook is worth spending the money on?

Is it just me or someone out there who still loves the ventura as the screensaver? I have moved on from Sequoia, Tahoe to Golden Gate Beta but I still like ventura as my screensaver.

My New Air M4
I have just bought my new macbook air m4 today. Actually I've got 2 questions.
1) Are there essential settings that I should definitely apply to my pc?
2) Currently I've got S24 Ultra. So I was wondering if anyone else uses this kinda mixed-ecosystem? Any tips for me?
