Economy & Finance Forty years before 1MDB, Bank Bumiputra lent nearly US$1 billion to one Hong Kong property group - and the auditor sent to check was found murdered

reading up on the carrian case again and its wild how much of the 1MDB playbook already happened in 1983. bank bumiputra's HK subsidiary lent close to a billion US dollars to carrian, a property group run by george tan, a former pest control man nobody in HK finance had heard of a few years earlier. when the loans went bad the bank sent an internal auditor, jalil ibrahim, to look at the files. he was found strangled in a hotel room in july 1983. a man was convicted of the murder, and from the witness box he accused tan of ordering it, which tan's lawyers denied. nobody else was ever charged over the death.

tan was arrested twelve weeks later, and thirteen years after that he pleaded guilty in HK to conspiracy to defraud the bank. petronas ended up bailing out bank bumiputra, and not for the last time.

feels like malaysia's original state bank scandal but it barely gets talked about compared to 1MDB. anyone here old enough to remember how it was covered at the time?

Environment An endangered fish only found in Malaysia

Betta chini, Chin’s fighting fish.

Endemic to blackwater peat swamps in west Sabah, and found nowhere else. It is classified as endangered by the IUCN due to habitat destruction as the area is developed and urbanised every day.

However I know some Malaysians who have bred this species in captivity. Males can be recognised by more colourful scales and patterned fins.
They are paternal mouthbrooders.

The scientific name honours the Malaysian ichthyologist Datuk Chin Phui Kong (1923-2016).

Tourism & Travel I already miss being in Malaysia

Hello amazing people, I just came back from my Malaysia trip and I already miss being there.
I loved the places. There are a couple of things I really liked, like being able to go out without worrying that someone will stab me or snatch my things.

The food was great. I’m from a place where the food has a lot of flavour and I’m a bit picky about food in general, but I really liked Malaysian food. The flavours were nice.

My favourite thing was the people. They are so fun to talk to and they like to talk and interact, which is great. I kept getting smiles and great conversations with people I don’t know. I had many conversations with Grab drivers, random shop owners, etc.

The weather is on the hotter side but pleasant, and I like it a lot. The most important and biggest thing I liked, and the thing I care about, is civic sense. No one honks for no reason, people know how to be civic.

I really liked how there is a balance of nature and infrastructure. There are many huge buildings but they are surrounded by a lot of trees and nature.

Everything felt very systemised and hassle free. The roads are clean, the people are nice, there is a ton of stuff to do, and the malls are gigantic.

I loved Malaysia and I would love to spend a long time there.
It’s on the expensive side but manageable for me.

Overall 10/10.

Thank you for reading.

His Royal Highness therefore called on everyone to discharge their responsibilities with honesty, no matter how small, saying trust and integrity are fundamental to genuine prosperity and independence.

"Managing public funds with integrity is a sign of our love for the community and the country. Do not allow wealth meant to benefit the people to be misappropriated for personal gain.

"Those guilty must be punished, those who uphold their trust must be supported and good systems must continue to be improved," the Ruler said.

The African jewelfish, Hemichromis bimaculatus.

An attractive red cichlid that grows to 15 cm and is native to tropical West Africa in rainforests.

They are extremely aggressive fish that live in pairs. Their violence is turned up during spawning (when they protect their babies), and they can even kill other fish around them.

They feed on shrimp, small fish and insects. Some areas on the West Coast now have a few due to releases by irresponsible aquarists.
