As a gay man in his mid-20s with a buzz cut, Why do I have this sudden urge to get out and find a group of middle aged gals who I can gossip with while having manicure and get a nice big perm?

Maybe this movie made me see women and womanhood in a different light . Magnolia flowers, beautiful and delicate, but made of steel. On one hand, you have the fun times you spend with your friends at the beauty parlor, joking around, making fun of each other, gossiping and just having a good time - the wedding decorations and the armadillo shaped cake as examples. Half the movie is fun, I laughed so hard during so many scenes. On the other, when times get real though, When life all of a sudden becomes real- like when you as a mother loose a child, incredible strength comes out. You suddenly go from being a cute lady getting a perm from Dolly Parton to becoming someone strong as steel. In the movie, Drum and Jackson, both men, couldn’t handle Shelby’s condition: who do we see supporting her? Shelby’s mom. A woman supporting another woman. A Group of women supporting M’Lynn through her grief.

And ohhhh my god there’s just something special about Sally Field. I adore her. The performance at the funeral, I haven’t cried like that in a while. But then I also cried happy tears when she went back to her grandchild- let’s not forget that she didn’t even want Shelby to have him. I even think that she should’ve won the Golden Globe instead of Julia Roberts for her performance.

I was watching this video in which Tim Curry visits with archivists from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. They show him casting sheets from movies he was considered for but ultimately wasn’t cast in. Tim was aware of some of them (e.g., the first Home Alone) but not others. He says he had no idea he was considered for the role of Malcolm in Jurassic Park.

Would any of the actors on this list have delivered as iconic a performance in the role as Jeff Goldblum? I haven’t read Michael Crichton’s novel, so I’m curious: maybe some of these actors hew more closely to the Malcolm in the book than Goldblum’s version does?

There are a few skits that don't work though. Like that opening with Arsenio Hall.

I just remembered this randomly, lol. I've hated the movie literally since the day I saw it, because it's utter trash. But my god, that flashback scene from 1978 is something else. As far as anything that tries to recreate a look/feel/whatever goes, it's up there.

It matches the original Halloween in film look. It has that haziness to it, like everything is seen through a thin cloud, and it's also grainy. The lighting helps here too. Far softer than in the present day scenes, and things are allowed to stay in the shadows. The neighborhood looks different too. The back roads have a more "rural" look to them, with a lot more fallen leaves on the ground, less built up plots, wooden sheds, stuff like that. Michael Myers' fresh white mask is basically as perfect as can be without getting Nick Castle to play him again (and his face's proportions). And of course, there's Doctor Loomis. I mean, as far as resurrecting actors goes, this has to be among the best, if not the best attempt, right? Dare I say it's spotless? And not a single pixel of vfx either. Just incredible makeup, clever lighting and angles, and a good impersonator and that's it.

I mean, that whole sequence is so good that it actually leaves me baffled how the rest of the film can be so awfully shit. Not to mention the fact...that's the film we got when we could have gotten a whole film that takes place in 1978 and is...like THAT.

Wow.

PIG was so much more and better than expected.

What a beautiful film that was, about the importance of giving yourself wholly to what you truly love, and the cost of losing someone.

I usually eye-roll when a character speaks the theme of a movie out loud, but this was so fitting to the scene, and the character, and the film's message that it landed like a surprise right hook. I paused the playback so I could process the implications, both for the character and for myself.

What other films snuck up and ninja'd your emotions like that?

One obvious answer, for instance, might be that one heart-wrenching scene in *Click*.

I'm talking movies that you love or think are genuinely fantastic, but have a score under 70 Percent on rotten tomatoes.

My favorites have to be UHF starring Weird Al, and Death To Smoochy starring Edward Norton and Robin Williams.

UHF has 64 Percent on RT, and Death To Smoochy has 42 Percent.

Death To Smoochy especially, has very sharp writing and excellent pacing. I really like Edward Norton as the Barney archetype and I like seeing Robin Williams in a villain role.

What's your favorite movie with a low critic score?

One of the biggest gripes when stars talk about how they turn down roles or how they're strict with their choices is that this usually comes from people with money.

I think it was Kristen Stewart on a talk show where she mentions that she wants to earn her roles and be sought for her talent. Chris Rock, who's right next to her, jokingly and probably honestly replies with, "Just give me the job." (Looking it up now, and he goes "I don't care if everybody's better than me" 😂)

I know it's impractical to expect this of people, but I was curious to see if there have ever been any artists who are that selective and do take the impractical approach of wanting everything they do to be some high art, or at least meet some criteria other than "enough to pay the bills". Like has there ever been someone who supported their acting career with a 9-5, or maybe someone who dealt with living on the streets while turning down roles they didn't care for. Maybe, there's been an actor who was actually lucky enough to find consistent roles that aligned with their vision and they just happened to be able to survive comfortably or uncomfortablyndoing so.

Again, I know this might not get a long list of answers, but I couldn't think of a better place to ask.

Not only is this film one of the funniest I’ve seen, it’s also incredibly unique not just with its story but its claymation style. The behind the scenes stuff is insane, it makes me exhausted just thinking about how much work was put in. And in 4K you can see ALL the details.

But this movie is exactly what I love about film. So many excellent characters, voice cast perfectly. Perfect directing, script, comedic timing, horror, creepiness, music, cinematography, mystery, payoff… In my opinion it’s a classic.

It reminds me also of those comedy movies in the 90’s like Addams Family Values, Romy & Michele, Home Alone 2, The Brady Bunch Movies, in terms of its insane quotability and style of comedy. (There’s a scene with a vending machine that I laughed so much at the first time I saw it, I’ll never forget it) Maybe the style of comedy is just suited to me personally, but it’s madly hilarious from start to finish. Like a great classic Simpsons episode, a classic joke every 25 seconds.

I wonder if this will be considered a cult classic one day? I always felt like it didn’t quite get the immense acclaim I thought it deserved, but with each year passing since it was made I am seeing more and more people discussing it. No other Laika film comes close for me personally. This one’s special.

So Sophie had a crush on this intriguing peasant when she was...12?15? Then they don't see each other for 15 years.

They reunite when she is in a toxic situation with a terrifying man who everyone else wants her to hook up with.

She has a night of hot passion with intriguing magician man.

And then...they disappear! To live together in a 1 room shack. Intriguing magician man has a reasonable sum he has made in a handful of performances but he can never work work again. Money is tight. Sophie hadn't realised that she was going to have to use a chamber pot in front of this guy in a one roomed shack for the rest of her life....and then *clean it*.

Neither of them know how to cook. They keep getting ill / having to eat very burned things. The walk to the stream gets longer every day, and it's hard to get enough water for a bath.

Intriguing magician who seemed Intriguing and brooding actually comes across as sulky within 2 weeks. If he keeps rolling that ball over his knuckles Sophie swears she is going to scream..

She is used to a life of high society, balls, dancing, world class musicians playing for her. Going to the theatre and dinner parties. Now a wild Saturday night is being at the blunt end of the same 8 card tricks, then eating cheese and stale, gritty bread for dinner.

I am looking for the name of an odd movie about the end of the world. The protagonist is a teenage girl who is connected with the looming end of the world. She develops a method of “preserving” things but accidentally kills her friend trying to preserve her. The movie ends with her making all humans disappear from the earth in an effort to save them.

The movie has random animated clips of aliens wandering around trying to survive on a dying planet.

It ends with the protagonist and her apparently supernatural boyfriend laying down looking at the sky as all stars are wiped out in a wash.

This was a low-budget movie that is apparently too small for search engines to care about.

Are there any lesser-known films you guys know about that feel like a Jodorowsky film? With surrealism, absurdist philosophy, comedy, and spirituality? I’m looking for gems I may not have known about before. I’m well aware of other Jodorowsky films, Lynch, Zulawski, Ken Russell, Jakubusko, Parajanov, and Fernando Arrabal. the latter I’m also interested, if you know movies similar to his style I’d love to know about them. I’m not sure if this question has already been asked but I’m looking for some good horror detective movies that take place after 2010. I’m not too big into older movies but to each their own!

I’ve seen some of the classics like:

Memories of Murder
Seven
Shaw Shank
Zodiac
Prisoners
Silence of the lambs

Just to name a few. It’s just been increasingly difficult to continue to find movies that fit into this genre. I’m hoping that I can maybe come away with a few great recommendations to watch with my partner! Thanks so much!

Oscar and Emmy winner Melissa Leo has joined the cast of Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax’s action-thriller “Supermax,” starring Will Smith.

David Gordon Green directs the film, which follows two FBI agents investigating a seemingly impossible murder within the impenetrable walls of a maximum-security prison. Lee — whose role remains under wraps — joins the previously announced ensemble cast led by Smith, AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, and Jaafar Jackson. WITHOUT spoilers… what are some movies with twists that completely caught you off guard? i’ve seen the popular ones: sixth sense, shutter island, anything m night shyamalan.

i wish i could ask this question without having to spoil that there even is a twist but unfortunately this is the best i can do. please leave recs, i want to gasp!!!

I watched Perfect Days when it came out and it truly gave me a different perspective on life that's helped me a lot.

I've heard stories of people that chose to be doctors after watching Patch Adams, went into arm wrestling after Over The Top ect ect.

What about you? Has any movie made a huge impact in your life, or led you down a path you probably wouldn't have if you had not watched it?

I love whenever the movie need to get something done and they go on explaining about how there is nobody is better than this guy (think about the Armageddon scene where they bring it the best oil driller in on the planet)

Or the scene got character to hype up someone as an absolute best at something.
