I’ve thought about this for a very long time ever since I saw it, and it still feels strange putting such a relatively recent movie this high on my favorites list. But at the same time, it just feels right.

I first saw it in theaters in January 2020, and it ended up being one of the last movies I saw in a theater before the world shut down.

1917 is my second favorite movie of all time, behind The Lord of the Rings, which I personally tend to consider one enormous 12-hour movie. Count them separately and I guess 1917 is technically fourth on my list. Either way, it’s my favorite completely self-contained film.

Every time I rewatch it, I notice something new, especially in the backgrounds and environments. And even knowing what happens, I’m always exhausted by the end. The continuous journey makes me feel like I’ve been right there alongside the characters the entire way, something this film does effortlessly so well.

And of course, Roger Deakins is truly a master of his craft. The lighting, composition, and camera movement throughout this movie are nothing short of spectacular.

1917 is an incredible film, and for me, a masterpiece of cinematography.

Your thoughts? Is it a film you still enjoy watching?

I always thought it was interesting that "Back to the Future II" was essentially a bunch of people in the year 1989 pretending that it's 2015 and attempting to simulate what it would be like to live in that year, while "Straight Outta Compton" is essentially a bunch of people in the actual year 2015 pretending it's the year 1989 and attempting to simulate life then. (of course these movies may have been filmed partially before their release year).

Are there any pairs of movies that show each other's actual year like that? For example, Blade Runner is from 1982 but is set in 2019. Are there any biopics or other films that were released in 2019 that are set at least partially in 1982?

I love whenever the movie need to get something done and they go on explaining about how there is nobody is better than this guy (think about the Armageddon scene where they bring it the best oil driller in on the planet)

Or the scene got character to hype up someone as an absolute best at something.
