Looks ready for some nice data centers

u/Bellatrix_Shimmers 11h ago

Don’t they need water?

30

u/Forsaken_Star_4228 11h ago

Mars used to have enough water to have an ocean but because it doesn’t have an atmosphere space stole it through evaporation and winds. Mars still has a lot of water locked up in ice deep underground. So technically you could figure out a way to harness that and keep it in a closed loop system and you’ve got yourself an extraterrestrial data center.

Ping rates are gonna be incredible

17

u/Forsaken_Star_4228 10h ago

Eh if I lived on mars I’d just steal my neighbors WiFi.

2

u/Expensive_Lettuce239 7h ago

The roaming rates!!

2

u/wowaddict71 5h ago

Jupiter's WIFI?

1

u/Forsaken_Star_4228 5h ago

Well I was thinking earth with the satellites but I’ll take whoever’s signal comes in the best and forgets to password encrypt it.

Mars still has a very thin atmosphere.

The issue is more likely the end of Mars’s magnetic field which it likely lost when the much smaller planet cooled enough that its metal core stopped moving as a fluid, and ceased generating a global magnetic field.

With that gone there’s little left to protect the atmosphere from solar wind and it got stripped away. The atmosphere Mars has today is very thin and comprise of heavier gasses like CO2 which may spend part of the year precipitated into solid form on the surface.

low atmospheric pressure makes more of the water ocean turn to vapor, which the solar wind strips off the planet. eventually, most of the surface water is gone except for that which is frozen solid at the poles or subsurface

3

u/Bootleggers 8h ago

Would it be possible to restart the metal core? Let’s say by nuking it or something?

18

u/Oseaghdha 8h ago

Maybe plumbing the heat from a million data centers to the core. 😂

3

u/Imbendo 6h ago

Sure. But it would cost more money than has ever been created across the entirety of human civilization on earth. Meanwhile we have a perfectly good planet in earth that we are already living on.

2

u/Forsaken_Star_4228 5h ago

Thanks for the correction and added info!

9

u/Acceptable_Claim_491 8h ago

They need to start the reactor.Didn't you see Total Recall?

2

u/Forsaken_Star_4228 5h ago

Someone better call Arnold to save Mars now that he’s done trying to save California.

1

u/H1ghlan_der_only1 5h ago

I just want to see him trying to breathe

1

u/Forsaken_Star_4228 2h ago

Pretty sure this haunted me as a child lol.

1

u/H1ghlan_der_only1 1h ago

Thanks! I’m better now

6

u/Oseaghdha 8h ago

That's what the data centers are for. All the heat will melt that water in no time.

5

u/Skinc 9h ago

Mars has fuck loads of water Ice

5

u/Facebook_Algorithm 10h ago

The minimum temperature today is -84C. I’m sure they could do something with that.

2

u/Sour_Sal 8h ago

It's cold enough it could probably use radiative cooling pretty easily.

1

u/mjp31514 4h ago

True, but it's also practically a vacuum on the surface so it wouldn't be very efficient at radiating that heat.

1

u/Sour_Sal 4h ago

good point

2

u/Killentyme55 6h ago

Nope, they need moms.

2

u/Forever49 10h ago

The median temp is minus 65°

23

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 11h ago

No one will ever live on mars.

15

u/Xendarq 10h ago

Ever is a long, long time. Who knows. No one is going to be there anytime soon.

3

u/NoonecanknowMiner_24 7h ago

I'll go further and say that I don't think we'll even get humans to Mars at all. The money and interest just isn't where it has to be and if it ever does get there, Mars will no longer be the target. It'll switch to space colonies like in Gundam or something like that.

3

u/Zealousideal-Two7658 6h ago

You are onto something there, first we will have commercial space stations. Multiple ones are in the development, here is one example:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FQpSAWGgL7k

This is more likely to happen soon, as it has real benefits for humanity with its r&d and experiments.

3

u/Whizbang35 7h ago

Oh, the solution to getting money, people and interest to the red planet is simple.

Ahem

"Scientists have discovered oil on Mars."

3

u/Imbendo 6h ago

Even if we could refine oil on Mars, it would cost $270,000 per gallon to transport it back to earth.

1

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 1h ago

Ding ding 🛎️!!

IPO launched! Billions in & if no one gets there. Well we tried. 🤷🏻‍♂️

10

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 10h ago

Why would anyone want to live on mars?

If anything they live in space.

I’d argue that isn’t happening either but I’m giving some leeway for the unknown.

Living on Mars was simply a gimmick so Elon had something to market or talk about.

No body would have been excited about “we are launching 40k more satellites into orbit”

21

u/Training_Motor_4088 8h ago

I want Elon to live on Mars.

5

u/DarkDistiller 8h ago

How gravity affects the human species could be one main reason to live on a planet opposed to space itself. Extended periods of time in space alter even DNA. Being grounded, while going from point to point, could be a resolution to that complication of living off world.

1

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 1h ago

True but what happens to your body on mars?

I’m willing to bet it’s worse than space.

3

u/MiserableBend1010 10h ago

I would live on mars

-3

u/ImpulsiveApe07 9h ago

Well, if we start dumping the right facilities, machines, habitats, and tools there then we can begin the process of terraforming Mars so that it's reasonably habitable -

The reason why it's worth going there now and laying the groundwork for that is cos that's gonna take a century or two and need a lot of research and exploration of the planet first.

"the best time to plant a tree.." and all that.

It's worth having another planet that's safe for large scale habitation, because we don't yet have the resources or the technology to build large scale orbitals to perform that function (and arguably it's easier/cheaper to maintain a habitat on a planet than it is on a massive space station or collection of space stations, if we're talking about long term habitation).

9

u/sSummonLessZiggurats 9h ago

We can't even maintain the habitable environment that already exists on our own planet, and people think we're somehow going to create one from scratch on Mars?

1

u/ImpulsiveApe07 7h ago

Yes. Eventually. We know how to do it, it's just a very time consuming and expensive process.

It's also worth noting that part of the reason why we should move industry into orbit and to other planetary bodies is because of exactly what you described - there are no guarantees of habitability on Earth in the future, precisely because of all the damage we've caused and will continue to cause to Earth's environment.

Why would anyone in their right minds want to keep our most polluting industries on Earth, when we can gradually move it elsewhere?

2

u/sSummonLessZiggurats 7h ago

Polluting our environment is the problem in the first place, so saying we can just ship that behavior to Mars is not helping the case for creating a habitable environment there.

Even if it was possible to terraform Mars, why wouldn't it be easier to just work with what we've already got here on Earth? There's "no guarantee" either way, but those odds seem a lot better.

1

u/ImpulsiveApe07 4h ago

One thing doesn't preclude the other here tho? We can do both things - start to cleanup Earth and start to ship industry to Earth orbit, Luna, Mars et al.

We can't afford to just sit around waiting for the perfect tech to solve all our problems, or wait for the best possible carbon waste cleanup operation on Earth - life doesn't work in clean absolutes like that.

We should start preparing Mars for future operations asap, and we should use more carbon capture technologies here on Earth (and eventually ship our excess carbon to Mars to help with terraforming, cos why not).

0

u/sSummonLessZiggurats 4h ago

If "preparing Mars for future operations" means funneling more money into private companies like SpaceX, then all you'd actually be doing is lining the pockets of some scam artist while further entrenching the forces that are currently dismantling our environment.

Whatever about the reality of the situation, I do believe that Elon believes we are going to live on Mars. There is plenty of evidence that SpaceX has concrete plans and the will and money to execute them.

8

u/KayJay282 9h ago

No he doesn't.

He just wants to convince governments and the public that it is possible so they buy the technology made by his companies.

Anything he says or does is just to make more money for himself.

3

u/tadaloveisreal 9h ago

I believe like my choice of midwest or Colorado, i moved to Colorado because it was so far and excitingly scary and to grow.

So Elon has limited challenges to take on. Which ones sound stupidly nobody can doc that!!!

Elon perhaps seeks fame like Edison,

He's a Nerf nerd nerding better than baby boomer booming

3

u/NessunoUNo 8h ago

As long as Elmo goes to Mars I’m good with it. The sooner the better.

2

u/HereToCalmYouDown 8h ago

Your first sentence was correct, Elon probably believes it. But that's as far as that goes.

3

u/Koroioz-LoL 6h ago

"No one will ever go to the moon" said some dude in a roman forum. I mean yea it's pretty inconcievable right now but who fuckin knows.

0

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 2h ago

I don’t want to go all conspiracy theory on you. But I’m about 50/50 on whether anyone has.

And IF we did go to the moon. How come no one else has?

I trust nothing anymore. Everything is a big fat sales pitch.

I can only tell you one thing for sure. I’m not going to space. EVER!

2

u/Koroioz-LoL 2h ago

Ehhh no way it was fake. Too many factions involved would have had reason to debunk it if it were imo. As for why no other nations have, its expensive af and we were uniquely situated to do it in the aftermath of the early 20th century craziness. Also the prestige of being first is gone so its not a huge national ego thing like the cold war was.

But yeah no one alive now is seeing commercial space travel to other solar bodies. Unless some crazy breakthrough happens, which is unlikely

1

u/Alive_Nobody_Home 1h ago

Logically I agree with you. I just feel like I’m losing the logic aspect of life.

1

u/dearcsona 4h ago

Send Elon there

1

u/OMEN802 2h ago

Mars won't matter because in 1 billion years the sun will slowly get hotter and brighter. This heat will boil away Earth's oceans and end all life on the planet. In 5 billion years the core will run out of hydrogen. Forget mars we need to be working warp drives so we can leave this backwater solar system we call home.
