So the common medication used to deworm reptiles is Fenbendazole which I can get at tractor supply without doing the crazy expensive vet trip. I specialize in keeping rare and uncommon reptiles many of which are unfortunately wild caught as they are not yet bred in captivity. Quite often the vet wants me to bring each individual reptile in to be tested for parasites which is really not necessary due to fact they came from the same location and were kept together, therefore if one has parasites they all do. But the vet won’t prescribe medication to all the lizards without testing them individually. So I was trying to figure out how to properly dose Fenbendazole bought from tractor supply for lizards. Has anyone else done this?

For context I do have some experience doing this by dosing goat dewormer on chickens. But reptiles are a lot smaller and more sensitive and I want to make sure I’m doing it correctly.

❗️Additional contex❗️since everyone wants to assuming things. I am not an importer nor a giant company that orders thousands of animals. I do not sell wild caught nor do I collect wild caught animals. I make pretty much no profit at all, as I put in far more for the care of these animals than I will ever get back. I have a regular vet I consult. But they won’t do group appointments and want me to make separate appointments for each individual of the same species. I am a small hobby keeper that just focuses on breeding reptiles that are not typically bred in captivity at all. The only reason I even thought of doing this was because it’s a common practice amongst farmers to just get the medication themselves and dose their own animals. Which I have experience doing as I’ve worked with quite a few different farm animals.

i've liked snakes for a long time, they're my favorite animal overall, and over the years i've slowly worked on a list of snakes that appeal to me the most while not being unrealistic for someone who has never owned snakes.

unfortunately, it's kind of difficult to narrow it down to just one species, as i'm really not that picky, nor do i know if i'll be able to provide a large enclosure for a snake when i get one (i'll only be getting one after moving, and i'm not fully sure if where i'm moving will have the room for larger enclosures, yet). initial cost isn't as much of a concern.

i'm hoping my research has been accurate, and these species' enclosure sizes + their beginner-friendliness aren't wrong, but that's why im asking here lol. it can be pretty difficult to weed out misinformation about pet snakes from what i've noticed, especially when it comes to realistic size estimations.

Kind of a sad post. I had never seen an actual worm snake, until this morning, when I found this dead on my bathroom floor. Guessing one of our cats is the culprit. If you look closely, it appears to be trying to shed when it was caught. Not an expert, so I would appreciate it if someone who knows more than I do has anything to add.

Area is Columbia, MO. As far as other reptiles, we don't see many lizards except an occasional skink. But turtles & snakes (mainly black rat & Common/Northern/DB water snakes) seem to thrive.

Have an extra 20 gallon tank and wouls like a retile tank in the garage. My only concern is im only out there a few days a week.

Are there any reptiles that do good being left alone for days at a time.

About a week and a half ago, my baby female crested gecko managed to escape her enclosure. Despite tearing apart my apartment multiple times, and even purchasing live catch/and-release mouse traps, I’ve been unable to locate her. I know she’s still alive, since she eats the food I put out every night, and I keep finding her feces, but I don’t know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated! Help me get my baby back!

Hey! I’m a new beardie owner and I bought small dubia roaches in bugs which arrive tomorrow. For now I’ve been going to pet stores and buying enough bugs for one day. I did crickets the first day and dubious the second. Any tips on how to work over my fear. I have 3 pairs of tongs and tongs that have a enclosed boxe.

I mean they live in shallow water and kinda go on land and stuff, so a paludarium setup basically.

And the general rule is 10 gallon per inch of shell, so a 40 gallon minimum for most adults, roughly 91 cm x 46 cm x 43 cm.

But I’m thinking wouldn’t it be better to have a pvc vivarium that can be easily waterproofed that’s bigger?

Like an enclosure that’s 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet high?

Or am I other thinking the care requirements for an animal I’m not intending having?

Hi all. I don’t know where else to post this. My boyfriend and I had a 1000 count box of mealworms that we bought in bulk from an online shop. The box doesn’t close properly/has no lid but it hadn’t been causing us any issues so I didn’t really care. Clearly a mistake.

Thursday we were leaving for vacation and I gave my little buddies some worms to eat before we hit the road.
We came home last night, Monday, and at like 11pm my bf noticed the box of mealworms was not in the fridge. I accidentally left the box in the reptile room. :) For five days. :) and they escaped. :) and got everywhere. :)

We spent a couple hours tearing the upstairs apart. Most were scattered in the reptile room and its closet. Some made it under the door and got into our storage closet, the hallway, and two sneaky little fucks made it to our bedroom at the end of the hall. Needless to say I didn’t sleep much last night.

I think we picked the majority up. Honestly most of them stayed in the box thankfully. But we found I don’t know, 30? 40 even? Outside of the box around the upstairs. None downstairs that we could find. I am so paranoid and itchy. But about to go through with a vacuum as it was too late to do it last night during our initial check where we just picked them all up by hand. We THINK we got them all last night but I’m anticipating finding a giant cluster of final boss mealworms and it’s grossing me out.

EVEN IF there were some stragglers. What are the odds they’d survive in our house or turn into beetles? We don’t leave food lying around, we don’t bring food on the upper floor. How long would it take for any stragglers to die off? And are the potential stragglers going to bang and make more??? I’m so scared please help

Sorry that this is long, but I’ve been stressed about this for a long time. I love my kingsnake to death, even if she can’t tell. She’s my first and only snake and reptile. It’s a long story, but I’ve had her for over 18 months now. I’ve been fighting really hard to keep her, but I think I’m out of options now. I’ll provide some context but please don’t be harsh because I’m really sad about all of this. I got her last year with an ex on a whim. I know. We spent hundreds of dollars on a setup and stuff for her and I wanted to try to give her the best life possible, as she had been at this pet store for over 2 years already and was starting to become increasingly more discounted. I’m not going to explain all the drama and stuff shortly afterwards, but everything got really complicated for a month or two before I was able to get her into a comfortable routine and better environment again. After a few more months, more drama happened, my relationship blew up, and I was basically killing myself trying to just keep her and care for her properly with the situation I was in. She seemed to be comfortable and I always made sure she had everything she needed (i.e. monitors, lights, hides, etc.) Despite that, it was easy to tell that I was getting quite burnt out just trying to maintain everything in my life. I ended up having to keep her at an exotic boarding facility for about a month, then two, now 4 going into 5. It seems more logical to use this money to get a new place, right? Well that’s complicated too, because it’s not my money. I don’t think there’s anything else I can do at this point. She’s healthy and her setup is fine I guess, but I just want more for her. I want her to have a comfortable, quiet, and stable place to thrive. I love her and I wanted to help her and live life together, but it’s just not viable. I have many other pets, obligations, housing limitations, and I think even what I could consider best case scenario is mediocre for her. Unless I woke up tomorrow with a bunch of miracle money that could get me a new house, I can’t do anything else. I’m devastated, but I want the best for her (even if it’s not from me). Is rehoming her the right choice? Who do I talk to? I tried local rescues but they don’t have readily available contacts at the moment. That just leaves online groups and whatever else I can find. I have never had to rehome a pet. I want to make sure she’s going to someone who can love her as much as I do. I’m sorry that some of this might be difficult to figure out with huge parts of the story missing, but the point of this post is about my snake’s wellbeing going forward.

He’s like 9 yrs old? Anyways, I keep a snake but not turtles, so I’m not sure if the enclosure is good or not. It’s been like this FOREVER. I’m just worried about him and wanna help.

He’s about the size of a large lizard but thinks he owns the place. Basement caiman setup, still growing.

For context — I’ve been keeping and breeding reptiles for over 18 years and have owned pretty much every kind of exotic at this point, so this setup isn’t guesswork, it’s built on real experience.

As for the system: the room runs on humidity sensors and heat lamps. The heat lamps bring both the air and the water up to the exact temperature the animals need. The humidity sensors make sure moisture in the room never climbs high enough to risk mold. Everything’s wired up with sensors that regulate it all automatically, so I don’t have to worry about mold, water overflow/flooding, or the room drying out — it’s self-regulating.

Found this dried husk in the house-live in the desert, Southern California so it’s not unusual but I wonder if someone knows what type of reptile this is?

First, if this isn’t the right subreddit, if anyone could point me in the right direction, it’d be greatly appreciated. Also…I know nothing about reptiles and google has me thinking they’re from new houseplants or hidden cracks in my house, and that I should accept my new roommates.

Within the last two days, this little guy and one other have popped up in my living room. I’ve caught them and put them outside, but now i’m worried how many more are going to show up.

I just bought a bunch of houseplants off of FB market about a week ago and only repotted a few. So i’m wondering the chances of eggs being in the soil? I also live in an older house, so I’m sure there’s unsealed areas they absolutely could be coming from.

From the little bit of “research” i’ve done, i’m guessing they’re just house geckos. I also read, some people leave them in their house for pest control. I’d be okay with letting them stay in the house if it wasn’t for me having a cat and two dogs. The cat is actually how i ended up finding each of them. They’re SO tiny and i really don’t want them to get mauled.

So i guess my question is, should I be concerned at all? Is it plausible they’re coming from the newly acquired house plants, or just outside? And with my pets, is catching these little guys and putting them outside all I can/should be doing?

This is morbid as hell but to put it bluntly I'm going to be dead soon for reasons I will not disclose online in public and while I do have some time I also have a lot of animals that I need to rehome before I go.

I have a ferret, a ball python, two dart frogs, a crested gecko and a frilled dragon.

I'm obviously going to require proof of a proper setup as well as asking the right questions to make sure the new owners would know what they're doing. I probably wouldn't be rehoming to any kids.

I'm just so scared because my ferret was previously kept in a tiny ass hamster cage and neglected by his previous owners and now he's free ranged in my home. What if I abandon him and he goes to someone who does the exact same thing? What if my ball python's new owner keeps her in some shitty rack system and breeds her?

I'm posting here to both vent, grieve and seek any advice that you guys would think help reassure that when I rehome these guys they'll be in the right hands. I love these animals more than anything else in this universe and I can't stand the thought of messing this up. Any and all help would be massively appreciated <3

So I’ve upsized my boy again because I was told I was feeding too small and I hadn’t realize. And now I have some fuzzy rats and like 15ish give or take rat pups since the smallest amount I could order online were 25cts.
So what do I do with these left over frozen rats? Can I donate them? I genuinely don’t know.

Hi everyone! This will be a rather long post so I apologise but I think its an important one. I am working on a simple yearly budget for reptile costs and a rough plan for potential vet bills as well. I want this to be a resource for people considering a reptile as their pet so they can see very roughly what to expect when purchasing and keeping their reptiles.

I would also like some help with reviewing my rough estimations for the veterinary costs of common problems based off of others experiences.This won't be 100% accurate since costs can fluctuate jurastically but it will mostly be used as a reminder for saving in case of extreme circumstances. If you feel my rough estimates for vet bill savings and yearly costs are not sufficient please drop an experience you've had and how it has differed from what I have written. Thanks!

I encourage everyone to make their own budgets based off of their own jobs and location costs, because they are seriously so useful.

*Most costs will be rounded up around $100.00 or to the nearest thousand just to compensate for unexpected fluff costs that vets and taxes oh so love to add. I am also rounding because no matter how much money you think you need for these costs, you will usually need more.

So far based from my own purchasing, I have calculated the starting reptile costs for two reptiles; a Leopard Gecko and a Cornsnake. Please dont forget that costs can be more or less depending on where you live.

An initial basic setup

Comprised of a 120g breeder tank, a lid, lid clamps, reptisoil & playsand substrate mix, hides, moss, coco shavings, thermometer/hydrometer, basking bulb & lamp, UVB bulb & lamp, plants, driftwood, water bowl, spray bottle, tongs and gram scale is around:

$500.00-$100.00+ (reptile not uncluded)

*Driftwood and tanks are expensive and can add alot of unexpected costs.

Most appliances die out every 6-12 months. Bug costs for Geckos are not factored due to how insanely different they can be.

Corn Snake/Leopard Gecko Yearly costs breakdown:

Reptisoil substrate: $60.00-80.00

Adult Mice: $50.00-$70.00

New flowers and plants: $15.00-20.00

New UVB bulbs: $70.00-140.00

New basking bulb: $10.00-15.00

Therm/hydrometer batteries (I use govee): $6.00

The total is roughly: $200.00-$300.00 yearly.

That's around $4.00-6.00 weekly or $12.00-25.00 monthly to cover yearly replacement costs.

If you want to save $1,000 yearly for medical issues then plan to save around $25.00-$30.00 total weekly

(this number includes the yearly costs for the reptiles. More saved is always better!)

These costs should be BARE MINIMUM. If you cannot afford to save these costs or you do not have external forces helping you save I would HIGHLY encourage you to reconsider a reptile. This is something I will not argue with you on, if you cannot afford these costs + what I am about to show you DO NOT GET A REPTILE!

VERY Rough Vet Costs

Most of these costs CAN be avoided with proper care, HOWEVER this doesn't mean that fluke cases cant apply.

General checkup costs are NOT included:

Common Respiratory infections: $100.00-$1,000+

Mouthrot: $100.00- $1,000+

Scale-rot: $15.00 - $1,000 +

Blocked femor pores on Leopard Gecko: 30.00-$75.00+

Blocked intestines: $300.00 to $6,500 + (Ultrasound = $300.00-600.00 + blood tests $300.00 + surgeries around $5,000.00)

Blocked glands in mouth: non surgery = $50.00 -150.00 +
