Lately, something that stuck out to me was the old gaming franchise Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle as I noticed that the franchise just mysteriously vanished after the 16 bit era of gaming ended.

I mean, yes I know about the fourth game as I was trying to better understand what happened with the franchise regarding why it took such a long time for a new game to come out since I don’t know what were the key factors that caused the series to be in a sticky situation after the third game came out.

I saw it pop up on my feed and it immediately sold. I messaged on another ad to let them know. Also I’m sure the son ain’t happy about this 😅

Lord Raiden with the classic white & blue fit and the 2 yellow logos on his arms, his cowl/mask thing & the black waist cloth with the rice hat, plus his glowing eyes & electric attacks all looks insanely clean and might be my favorite martial arts design ever.

He was also easily my most played character.

Ahh, the classic cat-and-mouse cartoon everyone knows and loves to this very day - it aged like fine-wine, rightfully so. The crazy adventures of Tom & Jerry had a great influence on many of today's cartoons as well as establishing several tropes and trends before the modern era, not to mention cartoons were a lot more liberal back then, allowing the characters to stab, shoot, blow up, or even kill each other with only mild euphemism. Ahh, good old times with much less taboos. The franchise has sprung tons of merchandise, comic-books, spinoffs, and of course, video games as well. This particular one is a 2D side-scroller developed by Hi-Tech Expressions. It has a NES and a DOS version, wit' significant differences.

The premise is simple and fits right in with the cartoon's shenanigans. Evil Tom has kidnapped poor Tuffy (the little grey mouse also known as Nibbles) and locked him up at the attic. Navigating the house and fighting off Tom from time to time, Jerry has to save him. The levels take place inside and around the house, starting from the cellar, finishing at the attic. Allocation is 5 worlds, each with 3 levels, that makes 15 levels alltogether, every third level is a Tom bossfight. Jerry has 3 hearts (2 hits before death), 4 lives and one continue, that makes 8 lives altogether, his basic weapon are blue marbles he can hurl, and they never run out, but he can grab addítional weapons and items later. Other collectibles include invisible ink (10 seconds of invulnerability), and cheese chunks which give score and/or a heart back. Basic stuff, nothing fancy, but hell, not every game needs a BFG9000 to be enjoyable.

Interestingly, no other cartoon characters appear in the game - we can't meet Tom's owner(s), Spike, the canary or the duckling either. Too bad, I'd have enjoyed a bossfight against Clint Clobber, he is a five-star asshole. Enemies are also generic an' apart from maybe the bees and the ants, they don't appear in any of the cartoon episodes. Almost every level has its own set of enemies, there are recurring ones tho. Some characters have interactive purposes, like can be used as a trampoline. Hit and health system is kinda interesting: small chunks of cheese don't give any hearts back, only points, but in return, certain enemies don't harm Jerry (water, flies, dry leaves). Watch out for heights - falling can hurt Jerry! One-hit deaths are very sparse, but falling into water is instant death. Tom bossfights are usually very straightforward - hit him in the face until he sees stars, but there is one instance when y'have to be smart an' use bees to harm him.

Now, the differences - ye, there are some. The NES version offers awesome Tom & Jerry music, a very good rendítion of the original music score, the DOS version has none. The NES version gives an extra life after 100000 points (since enemies respawn, and y'have unlimited ammo, you can cheat the system), the DOS version does not give extra lives, 8 deaths and it's game over for ya. The NES version has hidden bonus sections where y'can stack up on cheese, the DOS version doesn't. The NES version's bubble-gum bubble has a maximum height, the DOS counterpart (the balloon) allows flight until y'hit sumthin. The NES version's pickaxe and cleaver are melee weapons, the DOS version lets you fling them like projectiles. The NES version takes away your inventory at a new world, the DOS version lets y'keep your stuff until y'lose all your lives. So as y'can see, there is no clear distinction which one is harder.

Thankfully, the game is completely devoid of glitches and bugs, which is a big relief, since it IS difficult - especially the first Tom bossfight above water. Incredibly enough, subsequent bossfights are considerably easier. Invisible ink is only found at level 2, an' never again, an' there are a few instances where y'run into unavoidable, unkillable enemies, an' y'cannot attack while y're floating. Undeniably, it takes lots of practice to complete the game, but all in all, I'd say this is the best retro Tom & Jerry game in the roster.

I am currently searching something to fix the signal between my NES and my connected TV (the new ones). I try to connect also my VHS reader.

I would like something for both use and I switch between according to my wish to play NES or to watch VHS. It's not a problem for me if there is only one plug, I will switch between the console and VHS.

I heard about the Retrotink - 2X pro, I can imagine it will be perfect for the NES (from 1985) but I am questioning about VHS reader, will it be the same results ?

Let me know if someone tried it for VHS.

As expensive as it is, I would like to make sure that it will work.

Hello, I dusted off my PS1 the other day to play some games, but the disc drive was making absolutely dreadful sounds. So I was looking to ways to go digital with my games instead of using my discs, but I was overwhelmed by the options (FreePSXBoot, FreeMcBoot, Xstation, MemCard, etc). What's the recommended way to play PS1 games on a CRT, whether with native hardware or otherwise?

Hi. I got a NES (french) with an RGB audio/video output (https://imgur.com/a/cUZYRlC). I'm connecting it through a SCART connector to a dvd reader, then through an HDMI cable it goes to my tv. But I'm getting a very strange image displayed, basically all gray but with the shapes still seeable (supposed to be TLoZ title screen).

I also tried on a classic SCART -> HDMI converter and got the same result.

Can someone help me get the display right?

In the late 90s some friends and I would occasionally go to an arcade in Livermore, California on our lunch break. There was an odd game there that was really fun that I never saw anywhere else, before or since. It was flat like a cabaret style game except much larger. It was a square table with a steering wheel on each side. I think I remember the game having 4x4 in the title. You looked top down on a plateau and the idea was to bump the other trucks off the plateau. The steering wheel was hinged, giving you extra bumping power when pushed. We used to play the hell out of it, having to sneak in the back door of work after our hour lunch break turned into 90 minutes or more. FYI it wasn’t super sprint or the Ironman Stewart games. After seeing how people were commenting on my post about pre-rendered backgrounds, I had an idea: try playing those games again... without emulation. So, after searching high and low, I got hold of my older brother's PSone, which he gave me after he got bored with it and before moving out. But it wouldn't display an image, the disc drive wasn't working, and the disc drive wouldn't spin. So I said... "You're not getting away." I took it apart. The video drive was dirty and grimy, and the disc drive had a small stone in it. I don't know how it got there. I cleaned it and plugged it in. I plugged it in, but it didn't recognize the controller... so I had to buy one from a neighbor. I plugged it in, and now I have another problem. The memory card... it wouldn't read it. When I opened it, it was full of rust... and I had to buy one at an exorbitant price. And it makes me laugh because I was already furious and cursed it, so the button wouldn't turn it on or close the lid. I ripped the button off and turned it on directly, but then I put it back on and closed the lid too, and now it works!!! The darn thing turned on! I opened some games, and I remembered my older brother. How sweet. I'll send some pictures to him and my brother. Speaking of pictures, Here are the pictures... I'm on vacation from work and I have a lot of free time, and I'm getting nostalgic. What do you recommend I put in there? Can I put pirated games in it?

Probably the first RPG I ever played, besides Legend of Zelda. I remember this having a deep lore and combat system for an NES game. Came across a YouTube video about it and the music took me back.

The husband and wife duo that created the original game have still been working for the past 40 years. Now that they're retiring, they've decided to remake their first project with updated graphics for PC on Steam.

This video/the story is pretty wholesome and I'm glad to see they're doing something for their fans.

I hope this trend of new (physical and not) games for old consoles keeps coming. Despite the rising prices in physical retro games, this is still a great time to be a retro gamer!

Hello, I’m new to Reddit and made this account to see about getting some help. So recently I purchased a n64 from Someone on fb market and they described the system as turns on but no image. I figured I could do some trial and error to get it running but no luck. I used a power wire, av, and jumper pack from a functioning n64 I already had as well as cleaned connectors and ports but no avail. The power light comes on but no image. The system is also region free as the previous owner said they put a region free tray in. I can’t get ahold of them anymore to ask if the system worked prior or not since I forgot to ask when I purchased it. I have yet to crack it open as I need to buy a gamebit screwdriver, and I’m not sure what I’d be looking for inside. I wanted to see about getting any advice or suggestions of something I can do or try to get it up and running!(Side note if anyone was wondering I got the system for 40 bucks with a controller Mario party 2 Japanese, OOT Japanese, and a American baseball game and despite knowing there was the no image issue I felt it wasn’t a bad deal otherwise)

So I own 2 Famicom disk systems. One is an early model. Let’s call it Drive A. I can write with drive A. The other is a later model (Drive B). Both are unmodified. Both work great. They read and play every game that I own with no issues. My questions are, if they both play the same games, then why when I write a disk with Drive A, Drive B can’t read it? Do I need to calibrate Drive A? Do I need to calibrate both? Is it even possible to calibrate the writing drive to work with other disk drives? Does anybody have any advice?
