Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[PS1-PS2][2000-2008?] Old 3rd Person Game where you play a guy in a Black suit

For the longest time I’ve been after this game I only remember glances of. I was only young so the area must have been early in the game. There are long white corridors with small tiled walls. Your character is in a black suit with sunglasses on (I think)The game had a slight green late 90’s early 00’s filter to it. I remember there being either cameras to destroy or avoid on the ceiling. And possibly a cutscene including an older Cadillac style vehicle. I’ve provided an AI reference image of what I sort of remember. Anything helps

Wandersong [PC] [2010s-2020s]Game about a bard who has to put together a melody to save the world

Post image
11 Upvotes

Platform(s): Steam, maybe switch or another console

Genre: RPG/Rhythm

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style: Simple 2d art style

Notable characters: The main character, who wants to put together a melody to save the world from its demise. The antagonist, a girl who was the chosen one and keeps killing the guys who have to give the mc his melody pieces.

Notable gameplay mechanics: You could input notes through a circle around the mc, each color corresponding to a note. You used this at the end to input the melody and I'm pretty sure you also used it for puzzles, I drew what I remember of it in the picture.

Other details: There was a secret ending where you input the melody at the start without going through the main story and just fail because the game was about befriending people instead of harming them I believe.

Windosill [pc][2010’s] vector art puzzle exploration game, used to be on bored button as “play in the dark”

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

There was a website that used to be on bored button, the caption was something like “play in the dark”. It’s in a vector art style.

It starts out as a wall of shelves almost like a cabinet of curiosities but with toys, springs, dolls etc, it’s completely dark and your cursor is the flashlight, so you can only see one thing at a time. See picture one for the general idea.
You find a hidden door/panel in one of the boxes and when you open it, you can send a toy train through and it takes you to the next puzzle. I don’t remember all the puzzles but there’s a giant box with lots of flaps of various sizes. Each flap has a different animal body part e.g. eyes, beaks, noses etc. there is another puzzle that involves plant like things that grow little balls that can be picked and put into boxes. See picture 2

[android] [2010's] undertale/fnaf mobile series?

Upvotes

I can only vaguely remember but it was sort of a mix of an undertale game type where you solve puzzles to get to a boss fight the art style was similar to that old fnaf dating simulator you were able to name yourself and at the end of the game it would say that name before the final boss I know that there was a monkey as a main antagonist and one of the first levels had the end goal of unlocking a gun case used by the first boss, this game has been clawing at the back of my skull for YEARS

[PC][2015-2020?] Horror game about going into a rusty bunker deep in the snowy woods

Post image
18 Upvotes

Platform(s): PC, storefront is itch.io (i believe)

Genre: First Person, Horror, Atmospheric

Estimated year of release: 2015-2020? Maybe around 2018

Graphics/art style: Low Poly, the common indie ps1 art style horror game look

Notable gameplay mechanics: Walking simulator without any means of defense

Other details: I remember watching a "3 Scary Games" video by Markiplier and in it was featured a horror game set in a snowy forest which i believe was called Hamlet and is the game's namesake. The protagonist walks around the forest and sees one or more warning signs eventually leading up to a bunker. Once the mc enters the bunker everything seems normal up to a point where the bunker shifts entirely and the pristine walls become covered in rust and then the protag gets killed by a monster. I'm pretty sure it was one of Mark's earlier videos and he started his series in 2018 which lead me to the conclusion about the game's release date, but again it is possible that it came out earlier or the video was released later than 2018. Any search of the game's title bore no fruit as it was overshadowed by games relating to Shakespeare's Hamlet. All help is appreciated!

[PC][Early 2000s] Old racing game with primitive flat-shaded graphics, beat a boss racer each level to win their car

Looking for a racing game I played as a young kid on an old Windows PC, around 2012 — but the game itself felt older, more like a 90s DOS-era title.
What I remember:
Third-person view, behind the car (not top-down)
The cars were completely fictional/cartoonish, not based on real car brands
Graphics were VERY primitive — cars were rendered as simple geometric shapes, each in a single flat color with no shading/gradients at all
The environment around the tracks felt almost nonexistent — I don't remember any real scenery, just a flat color background. The "track" was basically just the road itself, forming turns and occasional jumps
Some jumps let you do flips/barrel rolls (stunts) in the air
Structure: there were around 8-10 levels, each with a race. If you won the race, you'd beat that level's "boss" and get to keep their car
I have a vague memory that one of these boss cars might have been a truck, possibly green — but I'm not 100% sure on the color
I've already tried checking Death Rally, Stunt Racer 64, Big Red Racing, Stunts, and Fatal Racing/Whiplash, but none of them quite match the "beat the boss, win their car" structure combined with that flat, shading-less look and empty environment.
Any ideas?

Colin McRae Rally 2.0 [PS1][1998-1999?] Racing game of some sort

I've stumbled upon this picture of Kimi Räikkönen playing a racing PS1 game that I assume is from the year 1999-2000 given that's the year he was serving his mandatory military service, so I cannot answer questions regarding the game itself , I want to know what it is though (Edited: got his service year wrong)

[PC][2000s] Different GTA Vice City-like game with a small map, cops and high-rise clubs

Upvotes

Platform(s): PC

Genre: Open-world / action

Estimated year of release: 2000s–2010s

Graphics/art style: Similar to GTA Vice City

Notable characters: I don't remember

Notable gameplay mechanics:

You could use the SEAWAYS cheat to drive cars on water.

There was VC style swat and tanks and also special agent (the special agent or fbi might be wrong, l, maybe I'm just mistaken)

You could somehow become/play as a cop.

There was a spawn point in front of a police station(not a spawn point but the rose/pink thing just like in VC)

The map was much smaller than the normal GTA Vice City map.

Other details:

I'm trying to identify a game I played on PC when I was a kid. I remember it being a different version/modification of GTA Vice City, but I don't think it was the normal Vice City.

Some locations I remember:

There was a building similar to the Ocean Heights Apartment, but it was different and appeared to be a high-rise.

Near it was another high-rise or large building, and I remember there being a club/nightclub on or near the top.

The map was relatively small.

There was a small island somewhere on the map.

Near the police station, there was some kind of spawn point.

I remember being able to become a police officer rather than simply stealing a police car.

I vaguely remember a high-rise area next to the ocean/shoreline.

The whole game had the general look and feel of GTA Vice City, but the map/buildings were noticeably different.

I played it at least 8 years ago, so it could have been an old mod, total conversion, modified/pirated copy, or possibly a different GTA game that I am remembering as Vice City.

Does anyone recognize this.

[FLASH/UNITY] [2009-2014] Trying to find an old 3D browser game where you drove around a pastel city collecting colored elephants

I’m trying to find a game I remember playing when I was a kid, probably sometime between 2009 and 2013. I vaguely remembered it recently and started trying to find it again, but I haven't had any luck.

I don't remember the name, developer, or exact year, and some details are probably fuzzy because this is a childhood memory. But I do remember the game itself and how it looked pretty clearly.

(What I remember about the game)

It was a 3D game where you drove a sedan from a third-person camera behind the car. You could freely drive around a small city rather than just following a track.

The whole city had a very colorful, pastel, almost toy-like look. There were simple blocky buildings, some taller buildings, and the whole environment looked very clean and basic.

The main objective was to drive around the city and find elephants of different colors. They were scattered around the map.

When you got close to an elephant, I remember an arrow or indicator appearing above it, and you had to press a key to collect it. The elephant would then disappear rather than actually getting inside the car.

After finding all of them, the goal was to drive to a mansion, which was the final destination.

I remember the mansion particularly well. It was cream/white with pink details or borders, and there was a fountain in front of the entrance. The mansion was separated from the city by a wall, and that whole area looked somewhat unfinished, almost as if the developers had built just enough of the map to make the game work.

The game itself also had a very indie / small-project feeling. It didn't look like something made by a big game company. It looked somewhat rushed or unfinished, but still completely playable.

Once you reached the mansion after collecting the elephants, there was supposed to be a party.

I also vaguely remember some kind of weapon or weapon-like object, but I'm not sure about this at all, so I wouldn't rely on that clue.

The music is another thing I remember strongly: I think it played a version of the children's song "One Elephant Went Out to Play", which is the same song/melody as the Spanish "Un elefante se balanceaba". I don't remember what language the singing was in.

I don't remember exactly how many elephants there were. It might have been more than five, but I really can't be sure.

Unfortunately, I don't have any screenshots. This is just a game I suddenly remembered from childhood and now I'm going crazy trying to find it.

[PC] [2011 or earlier] Obscure 3D ninja game, desaturated cartoon graphics, forests and Japanese houses

Upvotes

**Platform(s):** PC (Windows XP / Vista era), played from a possibly burned CD-ROM

**Genre:** 3D third-person action / ninja, mix of sneaking and fighting

**Estimated year of release:** 2011 or earlier

**Graphics/art style:** Simple, low-budget cartoon-style 3D. Very desaturated, almost looked / possibly actually black and white. Not cel-shaded anime style, more like a basic, not very textured comic look.

**Notable characters:** A single ninja character, no character switching. Wore black.

**Notable gameplay mechanics:** You could fight enemies and also sneak. I remember jumping/climbing being part of it.

**Other details:** Levels were set in forests and around Japanese-looking houses/buildings. It was almost certainly an obscure or budget title, not a big release — my dad had it on a disc, he often had other downloaded stuff, so it might also have been freeware or an old shareware game.

**Already ruled out (please don't suggest these):** Mini Ninjas, Mark of the Ninja, Aragami, Ninja Blade, Tenchu series, Ninja Gaiden series, Ninja: Shadow of Darkness, Shinobido, Red Ninja.

Solar Rift [PC][Flash Era] A 2D shooter game where the astronaut uses elemental guns to explore the map and open doors?

So far I can only remember the game being that an astronaut has crashlanded onto an alien planet, and starts off with a "light" elemental gun. The astronaut then explores the very large map divided into multiple stages by the "elements" theme, which then unlocks other elemental guns, in no particular order: "freeze", "fire", "missile", and "darkness". Quite notable is that the large map areas are partitioned by doors that look like this:

The curved parts are doors that must be unlocked by shooting it with an appropriately-colored elemental gun.

The story does not seem sci-fi at first, but as the player explores each major area, the player eventually discovers a conspiracy involving a long-lost high-tech ancient civilization, which explains the various unusual-looking enemies in the map. The player then fights bosses at each major area to unlock guns, and finally unlock the final boss.

Can't immediately remember the name (to then find it on Flashpoint). What could this game be?

[PC][2020-2022] Top down (as in literally 180 degrees, top-of-the-head showing) dungeon crawler action roguelite with a dark fantasy theme and a fantasy artstyle

Upvotes

Platform(s): PC but likely controller-playable

Genre: Roguelite (?), action RPG, hack and slash, room-based exploration

Estimated year of release: 2020-2022

Graphics/art style: fantasy, eastern (likely CN devs), leaning anime but not too Japanese, exaggerated designs with "generic" class choices and dark fantasy theming

Notable characters: Playable cast consists of a sword and board knight called Arthur, a samurai character, elf with a bow, some sort of spell caster and some sort of roguish archetype

Notable gameplay mechanics:

  • shops and all sorts of things inside dungeon floors with branching paths into rooms but one connected level;
  • weapons can have spells attached to them;
  • most characters have skills, attack combos and ultimate skills;
  • characters can pick up other characters' primary weapon(s) to gain access to their skills;
  • health and mana pickups as well as levelups drop inside dungeon alongside weapon loots with statlines and level on gear being main run powerup;
  • end of run usually has currency to invest into permanent upgrades for other runs;
  • doing runs with characters unlock other characters;
  • certain areas become arenas where stronger mobs spawn in and playable characters are trapped in said arenas until the last powered-up mob is slain

Other details: the game's name might be made into an acronym like DBM:R, but I cannot remember what any of those stands for; also the main promotional/thumbnail image for it on Steam or some other platform(s) is the Arthur character front and center

i remember as a kid i played this game, where the characters were basic stick figures on different colors. there was ladders and platforms. the catch was that the only way to kill your enemy was to make a hole in which he could fall and the walls would crush around him. and he could do the same to you.

[PC][2000] marble game

We used to play a game on a Windows PC ( maybe 98 ? ) of marbles. The description is below, hope fully someone can help me find it.

You have a 3d view of a grid "base", made to look like a metal playground, like early Robot Wars (UK - maybe Battle Bots in the US?).

The "marbles" can be normal, rubber or metal. They have a start point and there is an exit square where you need to get the marbles. You can place ramps/angled divertors to "bounce" the balls in a different direction. The metal ones have more "weight" and so when they bump into the rubber ones they give it more speed.

I *thought* the name was called Marble Run but I have been unable to locate it.

Thanks in advance.

Enter game title here [PC] [1997-1999] Horror/Mystery point-and-click game

Post image
Upvotes

Hey y'all, looking for a PC point and click mystery game I played as a kid, had a dark, grungy look, lots of blue tones. Main character was a man, had a fixed camera angle. I think at one point you are investigating a mine? Would've been late 90's. Could've also been tank controls, movement always annoyed me as a kid.

Pic is not the game, but a similar look.

[PC][2000-2005?] Very strange Dinosaur game where you would jump around and shoot rockets!

Upvotes

When I was little my brother used to set me up on my mom’s Mac computer and would play this Dinosaur game with me that was so weird. You would bounce around and collect eggs I think and then you could also shoot rockets and random guns too. I remember it was so distinct and weird but I don’t have any other information other than that!

[PC][1996] Adventure/Puzzle Game similar to Myst

Upvotes

Platform: PC
Genre: Puzzle/Adventure
Estimated year: 1996
Graphics/Art style: Realistic imagery, not bit-like. Not bright and happy. Maybe similar to Myst but vaguely recall better graphics/imagery.
No notable characters
No notable mechanics

My dad played this puzzle/adventure game when I was about four, and I have this hazy scene/screen in my memory. Two humans on a ledge inside a cave or chasm, with a beam of sunlight upon them. It seemed like a pivotal scene in the game. There were vivid greens and maybe dinosaurs. I've included a rough sketch. He thought the game might've been Myst but it was third-person. The style appeared to be maneuvering between screens/scenes, less like walking around the island.

Aria's story [PC] [2020ish] alice in wonderland style rpgmaker horror game

Upvotes

The main character of the horror game is a girl named Alice and the first scene is her waking up in a library alone.

The story of the game that I remember is that Alice got killed by a hunter and one of her friends trapped her along with another friend in a book that he wrote though that friend knew what was going on and acted like she didn't if I remember right, anyways every time the book writer tried to change alice's fate someone else died.

[flash internet browser][2010-2012?] Top-Down Zombie RTS Survival Game

So I can’t remember the name obviously, but I can see the gameplay clearly. It was a top down zombie RTS game where you had to manage your resources (wood, bullets, metal, food, survivors) to build up defenses against the zombies. I believe the game takes place on an island with a city layout and there’s a bridge that zombies come in on. You can build little posts for your survivors to shoot down zombies, and the people run around gathering resources and building things. If a zombie destroys a safe house the people try to run to the nearest one.

It has a 2d graphics style and played like a RTS with light tower defense game mechanics.

I can try to provide more clarity if it will help!
