News Singapore’s low data centre rate to propel demand in Johor

Malaysia’s data centre (DC) hub in Johor is set to benefit from unmet demand in Singapore, as the city-state’s provisional award of just 200 megawatts (MW) of new DC capacity falls well short of what is sought by competing proposals.

Another comparison by Fitch shows that planned capacity for Singapore is 207MW – Malaysia is more than 12 times that at 2,486MW.

News Singapore spending billions to adapt to climate change, but deforestation continues

Singapore is preparing its first national climate adaptation plan as temperatures and extreme rainfall increase, but the city-state is also clearing forests for housing.

The planned development of Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks has triggered rare public protests, with residents arguing that Singapore’s environmental impact assessments fail to account for forests’ role in climate adaptation.

Scientists say forest loss could increase heat and flood risks, while Singapore is spending billions on engineered climate defenses such as drainage, seawalls and heat-resistant paint.

The conflict puts Singapore’s “city in nature” vision under scrutiny, as conservationists question whether tree planting and managed greenery can compensate for the loss of forests

Opinion / Fluff Post Commentary: COE debate should not be about putting cars within everyone’s reach

"Singapore’s transport debate has long centred on cars. The next phase should centre more clearly on people.

The question cannot stop at who gets to own a car. It must also ask how public transport, point-to-point services and shared cars can provide reliable mobility across different stages of life, without turning every need for flexibility into a need for car ownership."

This site is the former Grange Road carpark near Somerset MRT station, it's great to see it being put to better uses!

Hope to see more open-air carparks turned into community spaces in future. Especially in Orchard Road which is far too much road and not enough orchard.

You may have heard of children writing to Santa Claus with their wish list, but have you ever imagined writing to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong instead?

That's exactly what six-year-old Sarah from Singapore did — and instead of asking for presents, she had only one request for the prime minister, whom she referred to as "Lorens Wong": no more siblings.

In the handwritten letter posted to social media by her mother Humairah Suhaimi, Sarah 'appealed' to PM Wong, telling him that she did not wish to "be a big sister" as she was worried she would no longer be allowed to sleep next to her mother.

"Even though you want to give us a lot of money, we don't need more money," she wrote.

Singapore is the pilot site for Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche’s global effort to accelerate precision medicine in cancer treatment because of its strong research and clinical capabilities, among other reasons.

Such cutting-edge research will give people in Singapore early access to the best treatments and allow for better diagnoses and disease prevention, as well as more targeted treatments.

Industry R&D jobs rose by 33 per cent, from 24,466 in 2018 to 32,509 in 2023. More than 70 per cent of the jobs were taken up by Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

Semiconductor manufacturing – which employs a 34,000-strong workforce here – grew by about 60 per cent, from $101.3 billion in 2020 to $160.2 billion in 2025.

In a TikTok post on Aug 31, the fake photos are shared alongside real ones, leaving social media users none the wiser.

The post has already garnered over 140,000 views and close to 300 comments.

Shalinny, 40, who works at the State Courts, was portrayed with a black “pottu” (a traditional coloured dot or mark worn on the forehead).

Her husband, who wanted to be known only as Selvaganesh, 43, said Shalinny does not wear a black pottu.

He was upset when he saw the TikTok post and told The Straits Times that fake images of his wife were being circulated.

Car hit a motorcyclist. Unclear what happened but allegedly the car made an illegal U-turn and the bike hit the car.

The motorcyclist is alive but look hurt. Maybe leg fracture.

Thankfully no one died.
