Solved [TOMT] [SONG] [early 2000s] Indie song that has been driving me to distraction for ~17 years

In the late aughts, I lived with a young woman who was very involved in the local Twin Cities, MN punk scene. She exclusively dated musicians and while she was extremely chaotic and toxic, she had phenomenal taste in music. I heard this song a couple of times in this woman’s car and from her room in our place. I asked her about it several times but she was incredibly weird about people “stealing” her taste in music and would refuse to tell me.

There is no way this song came out after 2009, I first heard it in the late summer/early autumn of that year. Given how on top of indie music she was, I’d guess this came out sometime after 2003.

The song featured a feminine vocalist with a strong, clear voice. The main instruments were piano and drums. The vibes were very Dresden Dolls but more upbeat. Matt & Kim but extremely lo-fi. If this makes sense, the piano was more heavy on the percussion than the melodic.

The only lyrics I can recall are from the chorus, which I have googled a million-billion times over the years. They go something like:

> Oh pretty baby
> You shoulda loved me when you had me
> You shoulda loved me when you
> Had the chance, had the chance

Vocaroo link (don’t be a jerk, I’m not a singer and this will be flat/off-key): https://voca.ro/1i2tUrKk0640

I suspect this song may be too local or indie to be found but wanted to give this a final shot before giving up. Thank you for any help!

Editing to add/emphasize:

• I cannot stress how absolutely lo-fi this song was, which is part of why I think it may be too local to Minnesota or too Indie to be tracked down. I said this in another comment, but the production value was that of a high school punk band playing in a garage.

• The vibe of the song is not sad, not even angry, more like “sucks you want me back, you should have appreciated what you had because I’ve moved on.” Mood: Cheeky / amused / sarcastic.

• What I liked about this song was how percussive it is. Piano is both melodic and percussive but in this song, it was basically an extra drum. The melody of the song is carried by the vocals. If there are instruments aside from piano, drums, and vocals to this song it’d be something like a bass guitar. Nothing synthy.

• The closest in terms in the vocalist’s range is Kori Gardner of Mates of State. I don’t think it’s them, though!

• While I only really remember the lyrics of the chorus, there was little poetry to it. It was very matter of fact.

Solved [TOMT] [TV Commercial] [early 2000’s] Looking for a specific early 2000’s US beer commercial.

Upvotes

Hi! My friend and I have been searching for a specific beer commercial for 20 years. The research points to it being a Miller Lite (or maybe MGD, High Life, etc) commercial. I’d say 75% certainty it’s a Miller product. Likely timeframe is 2001-2004, maybe 2005.

The things I can recall with absolute certainty:

The college-aged guy in the commercial draws a map to a party on his hand and then makes photocopies of his hand to give out directions.

The guy says "it's a party science" and also mispronounces phenomenon and then corrects himself like, "phenonemon… menon".

Help pls!

Solved [TOMT] [Cassette Tapes] [1990s] 4 cassette Sci-Fi Short Story Collection

When I was a kid in the 90s, I was a huge fan of science fiction and Isaac Asimov in particular. Somewhere between 1995-1999 (if I had to put a loose timeframe on it) for my birthday I got a set of four cassette tapes that had a series of short sci-fi stories on it. It definitely featured Asimov, but I remember distinctly that the last short story on one of the tapes was a story by Philip K. Dick who I hadn't known before that, and I remember that story being interesting but I can't put my finger on what the story was about.

I'd love to find the collection but after much Googling for cassette short story sci-fi collections I've not found anything. It might have been selected/produced by Asimov, though I'm not 100% sure on that. I remember the tapes themselves were transparent plastic with the story names printed in white. I'm struggling to remember what the outer case looked like, but I'm pretty sure it was that slightly flexible plastic that the cassette would sort of "pop" into and out of.

I would be more than happy to provide any more info if you have questions but I think that's all I can scrape from my distant memory now.

Solved [TOMT][FILM] Obscure 90s film — guy beaten up in alley finds a mask in a bin, becomes an armoured suit

Upvotes

Watched this as a kid in the UK, mid-to-late 90s (would've been 11 or younger - it may have aired on a Sky channel; also could've been Channel 4/5). Only caught the very start before being sent to bed, so never found out the title or anything else about it.

What I remember:

Western/English-language, not dubbed foreign.

A guy gets beaten up by a group of thugs or bullies (just street thugs, no monsters/creatures) in an alley, in the rain.

Afterwards he's rummaging through a bin for some reason/trash can and finds a mask.

He puts it on and it wraps over his whole head/body like a second skin — similar mechanic to The Mask (1994) in that it's an instant full-body transformation — but the material was dark, leather/metallic, not cartoonish. ( he does try to pull it off initially)

Ended up in a full black/dark, tight bodysuit — not rigid armour plates, more like a skin-tight suit.

On the face there was a single object, possibly a visor — I keep picturing it as a circular red light, but I'm not certain about the "red" or "circular" part, just that it was one distinct object on the face like a visor/lens.

No weapon came with the suit as far as I remember.

No idea what happened after that, since I was sent to bed.

Already ruled out: The Mask (1994), Spawn (1997), The Crow, Mortal Kombat, Black Mask (1996), The Guyver (1991 film), M.A.N.T.I.S., Black Scorpion (1995), Exo-Man (1977), Star Kid (1997).

Any ideas appreciated — even a vague "sounds like X" would help!

Open [TOMT] [1980-2000] [TV] Difficult, one vague scene from and old show, no context, it's been stuck in my head for at least 20yrs

Hello all, I'm looking for a TV show anywhere from the 1980s to the 2000s, but I only have one vague scene in my memory. The show has similar camera quality and direction as shows like 7th Heaven or Boy Meets World. The one scene I remember is two guys, I remember them being relatively attractive at the time, in a bed together, probably queen sized, and shirtless underneath the covers. I don't remember why they were like this, what they were talking about, or what they were actually doing, I have a vague memory of them possibly smoking something, but I can't say for certain. It has been stuck in my head for many years, can anyone help me find this show so I can finally figure out what the heck was happening in this show?

Solved [TOMT][WEB SERIES][2010s] Horror web series about a girl living with a plant-like creature

It was a super low-budget web series that initially started out as vlogs of this girl showing off her plants, before eventually revealing that one of her plants is a living creature (though it's quite obviously a papier-mâché puppet).

Over the course of the series, the creature continues growing and eventually learns to speak, and it's revealed that the girl never leaves the house, and that the creature was created by her late dad. Eventually, the creature gets so large that it's played by someone in a costume, and she ultimately escapes the house.

Open [TOMT] A small gaming youtuber (i think?) with a creative editing direction

Upvotes

a couple days ago i stumbled across an ig reel of the person who im trying to find and their content seemed interesting, i basically forgot of even save the video for later reference and now im stuck. the first part of this reel (the only part i can remember) went something like he was at the start of some lazer trap and needed to get to the other side so he said "this is how id do this" and edited a mini version of himself jumping over lasers, doing a spin and reaching the other side in the game, there was another clip from this reel and he was in the first night of The joy of creation, and edited himself in the crib, having a nap. The impression i got was like a cory x kenshin style of content, i think he had the same kind of round face cam too? this is all i can remember, if anyone has the faintest of ideas, lemme know. thanks in advance.

Open [TOMT] [Web Series] Microsoft Paint, multi part, illustrated series with main character being a girl with cat ears and black hair with sisters

Upvotes

It was this YouTube series I watched in maybe 2020ish, and it garnered a lot of attention for its amateur quality drawings and voice acting (with the microphone often peaking and characters screaming their lines and their own sound effects). I recall it getting a handful of reaction videos, but for the life of me I can’t remember the name of the series itself and it’s driving me nuts.

Open [TOMT] Emo-sounding song with specific lyrics I heard at work

Hey all! So I heard this song play on the radio at work, and sadly the song wrapped up when I went to Shazam it. Searching online hasn't been any luck, so I wanted to see if there were any leads here.

The song had an emo/pop-punk sound, reminded me of something by Starset.

The lyrics I remember most is the line at the end of the chorus, "I can do whatever it takes when I'm (unintelligible, sounds like either 'hungry' or 'angry'). This line is repeated a few times during the breakdown.

The only other lyric I remember was in the middle of the chorus/bridge, it went something like "drown in me and I'll drown in you", or something related to two people drowning in each other.

Let me know if you can find any songs that match. Thanks!

Solved [TOMT] Help me find a disturbing music video that scarred me

Upvotes

As the title suggests, I saw this video quite young, on a TV with muted audio, playing in a KFC franchise. It was one of those TVs in the corner that no one really pays attention to but young me saw something that traumatized me since.

Some context, The KFC I saw this in was a branch in Dubai, around the year 2012. The language that the song could have been could have either been in English/Arabic or Russian, as that was the cultural mix of the neighborhood the KFC was in.

I'll provide details of the video, but I'm adding a spoiler tag to not trigger any vulnerable readers. It's pretty gruesome so don't read on if you don't like gore/self-harm.

The video followed a young girl, seemingly in her teens, who was at home, in a bathroom, and upset. She's at the sink, looking at herself in the mirror cabinet and looks angry. She opens the mirror cabinet and pulls out a razor blade like one of the classic double edged ones, rectangular in shape.

She proceeds to make a small cut on herself, drawing blood, in an act of self harm after which she pauses, and then puts the razor blade smack middle of her forehead, and slowly drags the blade down her forehead, then between her eyebrows, her nose all the way to her chin. She then peels her face off, revealing the flesh and sinew under her face.

I believe that this point she collapses, because the next thing that I remember is that her mother and father walk into this scene, with her on the floor, and are distraught. The video ends with them on sitting on the floor, cradling the girl's body.

There you have it. Ive done my best to put all the scenes I remember down as clearly as I can but there may be some inconsistencies. I did see it almost 15 years ago afterall. But I was definitely too young to have seen that. It's left an impact and I can't look at a razor blade without thinking of this video.

Hopefully, revisiting it as an adult might help dissipate that feeling. Please do your thing, reddit and help a fellow find his trauma :)

Open [TOMT][TV SHOW] Sociopath/psychopath male gets kidnapped in a car and plays along for a while

Hey y'all, if anyone knows what I'm talking about please let me know!

It's a procedural detective show. I remember that a huge chunk of the episode happens in a car, where there are at least three people - the kidnapper, a kidnapped girl, and the kidnapped sociopath/psychopath (Ksp). Ksp plays a long for a while, pretending to be scared or being neutral, but at some point he reveals his true nature and makes fun of the kidnapper. Ksp might have been a serial killer or a murderer, I'm not sure.

I thought it was an episode of Criminal Minds but apparently not. I also thought that Jason Dohring was the actor playing Ksp but I looked through his filmography and it doesn't appear to be him (maybe it's because he played a sociopath in Lie To Me).

Rings any bell? Thank you!

Open [TOMT][SHORT FILM] 1980s HBO interstitial — woman rewrites the same rejection letter over and over, more frantic each time, scored to Beethoven’s Pathétique

Upvotes

This aired on HBO in the 1980s as one of the short interstitial films they used to run between movies (not a full-length film — just a few minutes). A woman is writing a letter, apparently responding to being rejected/dumped. Her first draft accepts it gracefully and with dignity — but she crumples it up and starts over. Each subsequent draft gets more frantic and unhinged as she writes it. The piano score (Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique) mirrors her escalating state, becoming more erratic along with her. At the end, the music resolves back to calm, and she ends up writing the exact same graceful letter she started with. I don’t recall any dialogue — just her writing/crumpling and the piano. Would have seen this sometime in the 1980s on HBO. Anyone know the title?

Open [TOMT][SHOW][2000s] Diabetic Teens News/Talk Show from early 2000s.

EDIT: At least partially solved. Thanks for the help, I'll search more for the specific dteens part I remember, but I think it was part of dLife.

EDIT again: Sorry, I'm a Reddit newb, not sure how to mark posted as Solved.

I've trying to find the name/confirm the existence of a news/talk show from the early 2000s (between 2000-2010). It was for diabetic teens and they would do interviews, talk news, etc. I believe it was on some cable news channel. I *think* it was called something like DTeens. I've searched for a week with no results.

Open [TOMT] [Song] [Artist] I distinctly remember a song called something like "John" or "Jon" that I've listened to on Spotify (I no longer have Spotify so I cant check), by a lo-fi electronica artist using a Speak and Spell type voice.

Kinda nerdy guy who had a Youtube channel whos name also may have been John or Jon, with less than a million views I think. This song in particular used a kind of speak and spell sort of voice for some of it, and a lot of his songs sound like they use sort of commercial electronics or kids toys for the sounds.

I remember looking him up on Youtube and a lot of his videos were sort of live stream style with him making songs from a locked off camera perspective.

Open [TOMT] old gun safety commercial (I think??)

I don’t exactly know the year, I remember seeing it once or twice when I was little. Maybe 3~5? (So about 2010~2012).

Basically it started all bright and Sunny, the dad was by his closet and his son (younger kid, max 7yo) walked up to him. They did the whole “Hey dad” and “Yeah buddy?” And then the kid asked where his dad’s gun was (or asked if it was in his closet I don’t really remember) and it immediately started to turn a bit gray. The dad asked why and the kid said something along the lines of “So I can protect Mom/Mommy from you” and the dad asked “Why would you need to protect mom from me” something along those lines. I believe they said something else I don’t remember and then it turned to a blank screen with text on it? (Possibly talking about gun safety?).

I know it’s dark but I tend to hyper fixate and I’ve asked everyone I know and they don’t seem to know what I’m talking about. I’ll be okay even if someone just remembers it playing but doesn’t remember all of it/what it was?

Open [TOMT] [Movie] [Late 60s - Early 80s] Fish Tank Full of Prop Fish

I am trying to find a movie made somewhere between the 60s-80s. It was shot with what appeared to be a lower fidelity technicolor camera with highly stylized saturation. The story had to do with scientists performing research in a sci fi lab working with fish and maybe even octopi/squids? I remember a scene with a fish tank full of experimentally mutated fish that were all props. They were pretty low quality I think.

I know it’s vague but thanks to anyone who can figure this out

Solved [TOMT] [SCENE] man shouting ‘leave both of us the hell alone’

sorry this is such a vague description but it’s a scene from something—i’m 90% sure it’s a movie or a video game, but it could be a tv show—where a man shouts ‘leave us alone! leave both of us the hell alone!’ he has an american accent (i think) and sounds distressed/upset, like he’s been crying. for some reason in my head he sounds like jesse from breaking bad but i don’t think it is jesse from breaking bad, or aaron paul in anything else for that matter.

im pretty sure it’s something in the horror/thriller genre since that’s mostly what i watch or play. i believe the ‘both of us’ he’s referring to might be a wife or girlfriend…? i don’t know. it’s just bugging me and i’d really like to figure out what scene i’m thinking of, so thank you!

Solved [TOMT] [Video] Parody of Crispy Critters commercial, where voice actor says "Indubitably" repeatedly in a deep voice

There have been a number of "indubitably" TOTM post but none of them are what I'm after - there was an old YouTube video which was this cereal commercial, but it started with the close-up of a guy in a recording booth saying "Indubitably" repeatedly, like he was saying it wrong, but each time in a deep voice. Then it cuts to a kid with spiky hair eating cereal in an over-exaggerated way. I'm not US-based so I didn't realise this was (probably) a parody of the old Crispy Critters commercials, but it's not their actual commercial as far as I'm aware. Help me out! I say indubitably all the time because of this old video!

Open [TOMT][MOVIE][Before 2010] Two girls start making out, their guy friend wants a piece but they say "who said you can join" to snub him

Upvotes

A movie, caught a glimpse of it on TV, probably before 2010, but might get it wrong.

Don't remember anything but this scene, and even the scene is blurry: it's 3 friends in the attic or some living room, somewhere secluded, probably wooden walls. College students age. They are talking about intimate stuff or playing a party game. Two girls start making out with each other slowly and very suggestive. The guy just stands/sits there petrified shy, but seconds later he comes towards the girls thinking he can get some action. One girl stops what she is doing, turn to the guy, looks down on him and says something among the lines of "who said YOU can join?" or "you are not allowed" or something like that. (the movie was dubbed most likely so I don't know the exact phrase in english). The guy stops, confused. That snub felt very sudden since I remember it being implied that the girls actually wanted the guy to be there, or one of them is his gf, or whatever. The shift in the dynamic was very abrupt.
