Like long NYer and have never come across this beautiful lady.

This is a woodlouse spider (Dysdera crocata), also called a sowbug hunter.

Bright reddish-orange head and legs
Pale, elongated abdomen
Very large forward-pointing fangs (chelicerae) — its most recognizable feature
Long, relatively slender legs
They commonly prey on woodlice/sowbugs, pillbugs, and other ground-dwelling arthropods.

Should you worry about it?
Generally, no. They aren’t considered medically significant to people. They can bite if handled or trapped against skin, and their large fangs can make a bite painful, but they’re not aggressive toward humans.

As a former upstate NYer who hasn't been back in over a decade,what's my home county like now?

After 8 years in NYC, the noise, cost of living, and overall stressful vibes have gotten to me. A few very stressful life changes have opened an opportunity for me to go home. My family is 518 based but I’m really seriously considering ditching the city. Things to consider:

-I work in finance. I doubt I’ll be able to pull a similar salary upstate. However, I’d like to open a small business like a flower shop/cafe/music store and create a 3rd space long term.
-I rent but have a cheap (relatively) spot that’s rent stabilized. Since I don’t need a car, it keeps me relatively stable.
-I’d need to buy a car (next logical step) if I was moving upstate.
-I have a small dog, single woman, 30s.
-I have family upstate, including a young niece and a dad on the last of his 9 lives. I want to be more involved in their lives.
-I miss NATURE. I like a walkable neighborhood but deeply want to be in the trees, or at least closer to them. Accessible to the ADKs, ideally.
-I want to garden again, beyond my little fire escape and indoor plants.
-I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I miss the winters. The city has been very mild, very little snow, and I miss the hygge vibes of winter upstate.

This is a bit of a brain dump. But can anyone suggest some towns that might help me achieve these ends? Or perhaps offer some advice?

Can anyone out there help me explain what a Stewart's is to my wife(she's never been out of michigan)i explained that it's like the speedway franchise that's here in the Midwest but 5× better,like an oasis or at least it used to be

In search of communities (virtual or otherwise) for social workers located upstate, or more regionally, for sharing resources and referrals, trainings and events, and to ask questions pertaining to our work. Are there active facebook groups or discord servers or even a giant group chat? How are we sharing knowledge out here?

I moved here about a month ago from South Carolina. I've spent a lot of time tracking down the best local sources for news, weather, happenings etc. and I've found it a little lacking. I live in Washington County, work in Saratoga county and spend a lot of time in Warren County.

Here is what I'm looking for and I'm hoping for some suggestions:

1. Who are the best sources for local weather? Is there a good local weatherperson who updates on FB, or other social media during weather events?

2. What are the best local news sources?

3. Are there any super helpful subreddits or fb groups for this area? Specifically that may post about local events, news, restaurants, entertainment?

4. Are there any good locals who are active on social media that post regular content about the area?

I appreciate any and all suggestions here, just trying to get plugged into the community.

It is time once again for the annual reminder.  Fall hunting seasons in NY begin September 1.  Exact dates, hours, species, and implements vary throughout the state.  While hunter and non-hunter injuries are extremely rare, wearing some neon orange or pink while enjoying the outdoors this time of year would be recommended. Something as simple as a hat or vest. An ounce of prevention goes a long way.  

Also, just a reminder it is illegal to interfere with a legal hunt.

There is plenty of room out there for everyone.  Enjoy it safely.

Thank you to the conservative group that blasted my young kids with a message about youth sex change operations in their anti-Josh Riley ad. I am sure targeting kids watching cartoons online is a prime demographic and helping protect our youth.  🙄 

A relative of mine just gave me the book "5 C Hero, The Joel Stephens Story". Was wondering if anyone saw him play football. Sounds like he was quite the athlete.

Beautiful day

Hey all, I was considering taking my kids to a fair this week/weekend. What do you all think is better between the Schaticoke fair vs. Fonda fair? Both going on Sept. 2nd - 7th. Is one a lot better than the other? I expect them both to be expensive. I would be going with the 1 day unlimited ride wristbands. Just curious what your experiences are with each one. Anyone been to both? Which one is more recommended?

Many years ago an old friend use to take me to an old secret swimming hole in Rock Stream off 14 I think… anyone know if that sounds familiar? Is it still accessible? I know how secret these spots are so feel free to to pm me if you prefer. I want to take my boys from out of state and afraid I might get lost in the woods. I lost contact with that friend decades ago.
