This is a quick test in getting DLSS 5 to work with R.E.A.L. VR. I am running in Mono mode with max settings on a 5090.

I have had to make some small (and hacky) changes to ReShade to get DLSS 5 and R.E.A.L. VR to work nicely together, so this is not something that works out of the box just yet. But so far, aside from some flickering issues which can hopefully be resolved, this is pretty hard to believe.

It's a space floating game about surviving and collecting resources with silly stuff, playing in VR with UEVR. Surprisingly it performs really well for an Unreal Engine game

Photo/Video DLSS 5's effect in VR seems very different compared to flatscreen games (Skyrim VR)

(crosspost from the SkyrimVR sub)

Hi folks, I was trying out DLSS 5 in Skyrim VR (the experimental Open Shaders fork with DLSS Neural Rendering) not really expecting much, but I ended up pretty surprised by a few things which I thought I'd share my thoughts on:

SkyrimVR Modlist Disclaimer:

First off, this is on my fairly old modlist for Enderal VR, and I'm sure multiple of my mods are out of date and that I'm not taking full advantage of Community Shaders/Open Shaders, weathers, etc. I don't see these clips as being a fair comparison between DLSS 5 and proper heavy, graphics-focused modlists, but rather just a look into what the tech is capable of and where it might fall flat.

Impressions:

The biggest surprise to me was that the effect on environments was very immersion-boosting (subjectively). It's hard to tell in the clips but in-headset when it's active the distant mountains and foliage look further away and more massive, while buildings and structures have a more solid presence in their landscapes. Obviously the geometry isn't affected in any way, but the changes to illumination and tone match what my brain expects from "far away" and "close by". I think this effect is exclusive to VR or 3D-displayed environments, since you have the lighting and tone changes working in tandem with the inherent depth effect.

To make the comparison easier to see in the clips I shifted the intensity from 0 to max (2.00), but if I were to end up using this long-term I'd probably keep intensity to around 1.00 and the tone, structure, and skin sliders to below 0.80. When it's all set to max the environments and clothing still look good in my opinion, but every so often something will have that "deep fried" or overly "HDR" kind of look, so half strength seems best. Faces on the other hand have that signature "yassified" look when everything is cranked up (and even in these clips I'm sure it's still a bit too much), so keeping the settings well below max is a must.

Broader thoughts + performance:

Overall I wouldn't say I'm a total convert; it's still obvious why DLSS 5 is controversial, even when positioned as a free tool. If you asked me before today I'd say the only time it's worth implementing is if a game's assets are designed around it and the developer spends a lot of time tuning it, otherwise you get a very generic style at best and "deep fried Midjourney" visuals at worst. For VR specifically though, I think there's a unique and potentially compelling use-case (again because of how the lighting/tone effects combine with the stereo illusion of depth). I think in flatscreen games you need high-fidelity assets and shading for a scene to look convincing, whereas in VR you can still be totally immersed as long as objects in the environment have a sense of physical "presence", which in my quick tests was improved by switching on the neural rendering.

Big caveat to all of this is performance: this whole experimental setup (on a 5090) is technically "playable" at around 30 fps, but I'm sure that faced-paced situations like combat would be painful. I don't think any of the typical Skyrim VR performance-boosting strategies would help get this to 60, as even basic indoor environments chug really hard. I'm hoping that future experimental builds might have some optimization, but I'm not holding my breath that this will be a thing in the next 2ish years.

Edit; one other showerthought:

I think the big pitfall of neural rendering in 2D content from the demos I've seen is that GenAI in general tends to make all parts of images be in clear focus (like it's adhering to a standard of "clarity" across the whole image without understanding framing). For VR though I think that's actually a strength because it makes everything clearer, and the framing and focus come from your own eyes and where you choose to look.

Question/Support Real time 2d to 3d video that works in Bigscreen?

I want to watch old movies in 3D in a theater environment. Maybe it's a bastardizarion of cinema, but I watched Vertigo (1958) with the iw3 real time conversion and it was an amazing experience, but it was finicky to get everything working, and in the end I had to just deal with the top title bar of the iw3 3d window showing up on the theater screen.

This was a year or two ago, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any easier or more streamlined way to accomplish this, short of converting a movie locally in advance. I should probably check if there's an updated iw3, but I'm at work and figured I'd ask here.

Cheers!

Self-Promotion (Developer) Reading might be the most underrated thing a headset can do. I spent a couple months finding out.

Everyone measures headsets by games, and I get it. But the thing that actually keeps mine on my head the longest now is reading. Text in current headsets is sharp enough that you stop thinking about the screen, and it turns out where you read changes how long you read. A chapter in a snowed-in cabin or sitting in orbit is a different experience than the same chapter on a couch — your brain does half the set dressing for you.

So I built an ereader around that idea, and it launched on the Horizon Store last week — HoverTome. Rather than repost my feature list (it's on r/OculusQuest if you want it), the short version: bring your own EPUBs/comics/PDFs or read the 96 classics it ships with, pick from 17 places to read, fully offline, no account. And as of this week it's fully hand-tracked — you can put the controllers down and turn pages with your fingers, which is exactly as it should be for a book.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/WswtnvBEzCY · Store: https://www.meta.com/experiences/hovertome/1056683397316514/

What I'm actually curious about from this crowd: does anyone else use their headset for something quiet? Reading, writing, just sitting somewhere? I think "calm VR" is wildly underserved and I'd love to know what else people want from it.

Discussion Question for those into tactical shooters from a dev (re: attachment mechanics)

Hey! We’re currently working on a new tactical shooter (COVR), and after showing our current attachment system in a recent video, we got a bunch of useful feedback that sent us down a bit of a rabbit hole.
So now I'm curious what people who actually play this genre prefer:

  • Do you like being able to fiddle with attachments mid-mission, taking optics on/off, sliding scopes on the rail, swapping things on the fly Pavlov/Zero Caliber-style?

OR

  • Would you rather have a fixed weapon setup that you customize before the mission and then commit to, more like GERONIMO?

I currently lean toward keeping the on-the-fly system because I like the physicality of it in VR, but we also don’t want to overcomplicate things just because we can.
We’ve already changed quite a few things based on community feedback, so this is exactly the kind of stuff we want more input on before we lock systems down.

Curious where r/virtualreality lands on this, and why. 🙏

This was made over the last 2 months and 600+ Hours using manual Coding and Claude/Codex to help with reverse engineering, It's playable, but there are some issues, it will improve over time as I work on it.

Lower your expectations, this is an Alpha, It's Janky, it's not the "perfect" port of Dishonored. But I will continue to work on this. I'm planning to make Physical/VR Interactions for most game actions

Discussion The mapping tech behind Pokémon Go is now being used to build digital twins for robots

Thumbnail automate.org

Niantic spent years building technology that could understand the physical world well enough to place Pokémon on sidewalks, parks, and landmarks.

Now a spinoff, Niantic Spatial, is taking that technology in a very different direction.

The company has more than 30 billion posed images from millions of locations and is using that data to build large geospatial models for robotics and physical AI.

One of its first major projects is Rancho Cordova, California, where Niantic Spatial is creating a digital twin of the city. It started with roughly four square miles, reconstructed the environment in less than a day, and brought it into NVIDIA Omniverse.

Self-Promotion (Developer) I left home five years ago, so I rebuilt it in VR and invited my friends over

Hi everyone. Honestly, I've never used this story on Reddit, and I'm not sure myself how right it is to show something this personal in public. But then again, I'm a developer, and my job is to talk about my game and about the problem it solves. So I decided to go with it.

I left my home more than five years ago. I've lived in quite a few countries since then, and honestly I still see that country house in my dreams, an hour outside a big city, the one where I grew up and spent the best years of my youth.

To be honest I don't really hope to see it again. I don't think about it often, but when the memories come back, the homesickness gets pretty heavy.

I miss my friends just as much. We had a tradition, once a month we got together for board games. Monopoly, cards, tabletop role playing games where one person tells the story and everyone else argues with him, and Bunker, a game that's very popular where I'm from, where you decide who gets to stay in the shelter and everyone lies about who they are to get inside. If a game felt too expensive to buy, we rented it.

You will ask what I'm writing all this for. Because everything above is the explanation of why I'm making Homespace. It's a game about building the house of your dreams in virtual reality, photorealistic, wall by wall, and then walking around inside it in a headset at full scale. For me that's the house from my childhood, for someone else it might be the house they can't afford yet, or a fantasy castle.

And then, once the house is built, it keeps living. You can get together in it with your friends for board games, which is the first thing I'm going to do myself, watch movies together, build something new together, or go and look at what other players have built. Chess and mahjong already work in the game, and Dungeons and Dragons is what we're building next. Or you can just upload your favorite book into the game and read it by the window, with the fireplace going and whatever view you decided to put outside.

I know a lot of people would want the same thing, to build the house of their dreams. And honestly, several tens of thousands have already wishlisted the game, so the idea seems to land with someone besides me.

I'd really like to hear what you think about the idea. I'd be grateful for your comments, and if you want to join my community, the links to Steam and Twitter are below. Wishlist it and follow the Twitter so we stay in touch.

P.S. I wanted to write this post to get followers on Twitter and wishlists on Steam, and instead I got emotional, so now I'm going to open a bottle of beer and think about my carefree childhood.

I'm actually surprised how good it looks in-headset.

Note: beard/mustache artifacts are not because of DLSS5, it's just a per-eye rendering bug.

I randomly found this while I was out with friends at the Alexandra Gardens near Flinders Street Station in Melbourne.

I couldn't find the headset or its controllers unfortunately.

I'm genuinely so curious about this since it was just over some bushes wide open, so if there's any info about it I'd love to hear about it!
