It's super interesting to see people advocate for and against bringing religion and superstitious into schools.
Especially when it's the opposite of who you normally see in favour / against.
The same people advocating for this would be against another religion giving blessings.

u/The_Disapyrimid 2h ago
Im an atheist who has always lived in the south. Personally i don't see a problem with this nor student prayer groups. I realize religion is important to others and I can respect that.
When I do have a problem is when groups demand their religion be the only one present and/or taught in class in any form other than a comparative religion class. Religion definitely has no place being taught as science or history.

If its opt in, then IDC. If it's non-predatory than IDC. It's only forced and predatory behavior in schools that shouldn't be there. Forced prayer in school, I don't agree with. Prayer group that meets up and pray together, totally fine with that. The first time they really tried to bring religion into school I was 13. It was post 9/11 and they tried to get prayer in during the morning allegiance time and had pushback so it became a moment of silence. Even that left a bad tatse in my mouth. I'm not religious, I believe in freedom of religion and I believe it's a two way street, I should have the freedom to not be religious. But often, court cases and society here does not respect the right to be non-religious as much as it protects religious behavior. School is a secular thing, people can be religious. That's why it should be an option, never forced when in school.

It's a little more than that. Like you're forcing kids to reject it, and putting them in a position to say no.
And when it's saying no to a person in a positon of power that becomes iffy.

u/raccoononreddot 1h ago
yes and no. i personally wouldn’t mind this forced upon me but would hate and react someone trying to force me in christian prayer. its all subjective no? hypocritical sure but context matters. i for one dont think its right without consent. have a bunch of options at school. let kids choose what speaks them. sadly relgion is going away so i don’t think we should ban a convo or exposure but some people forcing that we are a christian nation is weird and off putting.
2
u/Training_Wind_4997 1h ago
I think as weird as it has become it's a good opportunity to educate about other religions. If it's deemed that the commandments need to be displayed then you can bet your ass they'd be displayed right next to the doctrines of other religions.
It's all just a ploy at racist favoritism otherwise

I don't see why anyone would have an issue with this. What I dislike is when "educational institutions" try to intertwine religion and real education. Learning about religion is awesome. "Learning" that one religion "is true" is another.
Christianity, like all other religions, is a pretty awesome part of the human identity. Art and culture were shaped by it. It is fun to learn about. Just don't tell kids it's real.
3
u/Canadianwinters12345 1h ago

How is this not religious? It definitely goes further than carrying a "good luck charm". It is done to spiritually cleanse and purify an individual so that they can be closer to the Creator. How is this not a religious belief? It's so funny how Westerners have so much guilt about their own religion that they downplay the religions of outsiders. It's called the bigotry of low expectations. I'm not suggesting that you are doing this here, but you seem to be making assumptions based on the feelings you have about what you were raised in rather than seeing another religion for what it is. It's not always a bad thing to give others the benefit of the doubt, but it is a little silly when it comes to religious/superstitious practice. There's certainly a difference between a religious company that requires strict adherence or else you burn in hell, btw, they collect your money and assault your children.
Versus a cultural practice that's designed to bring peace to a space. But doesn't tell people they burn in hell.

This school is located on a reserve. And she's asking each kid if they would like to participate. Y'all need to chill out.
Also Atleast here in Canada (I know this video was in the states) indigenous practises like this are viewed more so as cultural practises rather than religious practises because indigenous practises typically arent monotheist in nature.

I’m in Canada, I work at a big art gallery. We were doing an exhibition with all indigenous artwork. The artists actually came to the gallery and smudged every employee, including myself, similarly to how you see here just more thoroughly. Honestly, i found it very relaxing. The purpose was to remove any negative or bad energy we might’ve been carrying before we handled the artwork.

8
u/Any-Mobile-2473 2h ago
Exactly. My own people do the same but with Syrian rue ("espand" as we call it). Nothing really radical or deeply religious expected here, just a nice gesture to bless someone/some place and keep away negativity. Also makes for a better smelling home, if you've ever smelled sage (or whatever the elder above used ) or Syrian rue. Just saying
6
u/emotumbleweed 2h ago
Even the most anti-spiritual, science minded person should be able to understand that good smells can be a calming presence that “blesses” a space, aromatherapy is a thing. It makes sense that cultures will attribute significance to them.
As long as it’s not hurting anyone, some adults in this thread are being way more pissy than the kids actually involved here.

Consider that this is most likely coming from a school on a reservation, aka where the native tribe that was forcefully displaced from their homelands in an act of genocide, is finally able to govern themselves again due to the grace of the white man....

The concern isn't the positive intent, but the precedent. If a *public* school sponsored entryway blessings from a priest or imam, many parents would understandably object. So, opposing this isn't about being angry; it's about protecting the principle of the division of church and state.

That’s not what separation of church and state means at all.
4
u/JustHere_4TheMemes 1h ago
It pretty much is. Its not a strong example of it, but still an example. Separation of church and state means that the apparatus and power/influence of state (i.e. government) should not be seen to endorse or promote one specific national faith. SO, no, its not like the school is teaching the doctrines of one faith and claiming them to be true. Nor is the 'state' is openly declaring the nation is officially X faith. But unless there is a conscious effort to make something like this a multi-faith learning opportunity, a public school should not be in the habit of front-lining any one faith.
9
u/GSilky 2h ago
What if it were Catholic nuns handing out rosaries to kids entering a public school? Assuming this is a public school, of course.

6

u/oceanhymn 2h ago
I also wouldn't care. What matters here is the option to decline.
What people get caught up on with the distinctions between cultural appropriation, appreciation, and assimilation is two pronged. A) Whether or not the culture is being shared by someone within it and B) whether or not the recipient is given the opportunity to decline.
So long as the child or their family are given the agency to choose whether or not their child participates and it's being presented honorably by a member of the community who is enthusiastic to share their culture, I'm not sure why there would be anything wrong with it.
I feel like the majority of negative comments here are just showing a very rudimentary understanding of the conversation and are hoping to find the perfect gotcha to validate their misery.
2
u/mallcopsarebastards 2h ago
> I'm not sure why there would be anything wrong with it.
Well, there's at least a dozen libraries worth of hard won knowledge around the value of separating church and state in public schools, and specifically around the idea that it must be institutional, enforced neutrality rather than optional access / broad accommodation.
In constitutional law it's referred to as non-establishment, meaning that a public facility cannot endorse any religion at any level. This isn't something that came about lightly, there's definitely a reason for it, and it's one that's been tested millions of times.

How about the idea that all spiritual and religious practices are nothing necessary for school, unless it's an expressly religious school? Top comments getting really into the weeds on separation of Church and State without considering this isn't really a religious thing.
There's a sort of gray area between cultural and religious traditions/practices, especially for less deistic religions. In a sense, when someone sneezes and you reflexively say "bless you," you aren't blessing the evil spirits out of their body as Christians used to believe, but it's now just a cultural practice.
When she smudges them, she isn't giving some incantation or invoking any gods. It's used as a way to wish luck and a means to maintain a minority culture surrounded by a larger majority culture via practice. The kids will remember in 20 years how it was neat that their private school did some Native American cultural stuff for them (even if a bit cringe) not that their school forced a religion upon them.
Y'all are being super reddit-atheist brained and it's only tangentially related to what you're watching.

I mean you compare in vacuum, but to ignore the context is exceptionally stupid. Indigenous religions don't have any political backing, no major following, and have been reduced to some traditions and rituals that are unfortunatelg long getting lost, just engaging in something harmless but meaningful to the population that was largely wiped out by settlers is not the same as a hyper political and extremely powerful religious organization.

Tests indicated 86 percent of the holy water, commonly used in baptism ceremonies and to wet congregants' lips, was infected with common bacteria found in fecal matter such as E. coli, enterococci and Campylobacter, which can lead to diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever.

I went to catholic school/church as a kid and I have seen people dab their fingers (usually inside of the thumb) in the holy water, do the sign of the cross, and then rub their thumb over their lips. I think holy water is also used during the sacrament (please correct if I’m wrong, been a long time since I’ve been to church) to rinse out the cup, and although it gets dried, that same handkerchief is used to wipe the cup rim between recipients.

I know this looks like I'm fighting with ghosts, but my comment is to serve as a thought experiment. I am not religious at all.
How is this any different from a Christian praying for a student aloud while they enter a school building or passing out Christian materials? My point being that people who mock Christianity (usually people on the left) have no issues with other religious/superstitious acts performed at a public school as long as they are done by a group that has been deemed "an oppressed minority". It's a double standard and shows inconsistency.

I'm apologizing in advance, I am really fired up about this! The comments I'm seeing are ridiculous. I don't believe OP was hiding & secretly obtained this footage. Please let me know OP if I am out of bounds with this...
Why is everyone so angry about native American schoolchildren at a private school(?) Getting a native American blessing before entering their school? I was so happy to see this, it is lovely. Just as I was happy to see the Atlanta students welcome to school. Just as happy as I was to see what our school bus driver made our kids 1st day back lovely.
Our children also deserve to learn about these things, they are the future leaders.
My honest opinion is not a good one. This post is full of people who feel bad & don't want to make things better.
Is it ok to teach religion in schools, yes, but it's gotta be it all & it's gotta be in the context of culture & free choice. The only way you yourself will be able to be free is to accept that everyone else is free too.
& OH yES.....I would also like to remind ALL of you that all of the Americas forcibly made the people they enslaved convert. So an example like this video & all the others are a pass you asses.

SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL BABY!!! ugh, I'm Alaskan so I feel your pain, even in this deep republican state it's so over the top. My local government is constantly falling all over themselves to act like best friends with tribal entities (which half the time in alaska just means for-profit native corporations making it extra ridiculous) going as far as saying they are "co-governing" including in emergency response, when the tribe contributes literally zero resources or expertise and just provides some dignitary to stand there at pressers. Then, every single time it benefits them, they turn around and basically tell the actual government and non-natives to go fuck themselves because they are their oppressors and land-stealers. They constantly do shit that would land any non-tribal entity in legal trouble, like building a casino they 100% are not allowed to. Not even on tribal land, just a lot owned by a native dude. Who, hilariously, was apparently duped by the tribe into building a casino on his land, his entire family came forward recently and spilled the tea that they have been fighting the tribe about it (the tribes original lease on the land was for building a fireworks store, which is also illegal locally but our govt is too big of pussies to do anything). There is also a cluster of homes near the former site of a native village from 150 years ago, no special status or anything, that has turned into an open-air fentanyl and stolen goods market that the city refuses to do anything about. I'm pretty damn lefty but the tribal stuff around here is such an obvious example of the nonsensical bleeding heart bullshit that drives people to the right.

I work at a residential treatment center and some of the native Americans smudge and help. It is such a nice ritual.

Honoring old beliefs is one thing.
Performing nonsense actions that do nothing simply because your ancestors did them and claimed they worked is intentionally regressive and anti-thetical to learning.

I would take this over hugging my teacher or standing in a line waiting for an awkward high five.

You don't celebrate any holidays, or birthdays, nor acknowledge the new year?
or you just being a hypocrite because it's a native American/ first nation's tradition? 😉
as an atheist, this is a weird agenda you're pushing.
edit: or, to say that differently, you've never taken such a stand against mall Santas. right? right.

Um, it's nice. Students probably know they don't have to do it. And for some it's probably a warmth or highlight of their day they don't get elsewhere.
You ever been a kid and dreaded going to school? Sure, this won't solve every kids dread - maybe not one student's at all. But these kids seem to be excited they get to do it.

I know right? I went to a kid's birthday party the other day and when they started singing happy birthday I was like WTF WHY ARE WE PERFORMING THIS NONSENSE ACTION??? and then when the kid made a wish and blew out the candle I lost it, I was like THIS DOES NOTHING. I can't believe people are ok with their kids being this regressive and unlearned. SICKENING.

I hope this isn't a public school. Separation of church and state, and all that.

It took a lot of filtering out influencer rage reactions to find the original.

But if it was Ash Wednesday and a pastor was outside putting ashes on students this would be a hate post. Oh the hypocrisy😂.
