Questioning Am I aromantic? + FAQ

Some FAQ:

What is the definition of aromantic?

Someone who is aromantic experiences little to no romantic attraction.

I feel sexual attraction. What does this mean?

Romantic attraction and sexual attraction are different things. Because romantic attraction and sexual attraction are different things, it is valid for one's romantic orientation and sexual orientation to be different, independent things. For example, it is valid for someone to experience little to no romantic attraction, or be aromantic, and not be on the asexual spectrum, or be allosexual. If you would like to learn more about aromantic allosexuals' experiences, check out the r/Aroallo subreddit.

I experience romantic attraction, but I don't feel alloromantic?

It is important to keep in mind that labels are about comfort at the end of the day, not whether or not "you fit them". If the alloromantic label does not describe or validate your experiences, it is valid not to use the alloro label. If the aromantic label does describe and validate your experiences, it is valid to use the aro label. However, if both the aro and alloro labels do not feel like a comfortable fit, then maybe a more vague label, like arospec, or an arospec label (besides aromantic) can help describe your experiences.

What is the definition of arospec?

Arospec is the shortened version of "on the aromantic spectrum". Arospec is a vague label that encompasses all non-alloromantic romantic orientations. It is the most inclusive label on the aromantic spectrum, since it is so non-specific.

This is a list of some arospec labels with active subreddits:

r/frayromantic

r/lithromantic

r/quoiromantic

r/aegoromantic

r/bellusromantic

r/arospec_community

r/demiromantic

r/greyromantic

r/recipromantic

How do I know if I am "too young" to know?

No matter how you look at it, the "too young" to know argument is invalidation. Even though the "too young" argument is unfortunately very common and highly normalized, the purpose of this phrase is to invalidate people.

It's definitely possible for someone to invalidate themself by telling themself they are "too young" to know if they are arospec. There’s no age requirement / "qualifying criteria" for identifying as aromantic. Identifying as any arospec label is not a diagnosis. It is totally valid to choose to use the label(s) that fit(s) you the best right now. If you end up changing your labels in the future (for whatever reason), that is valid too. Most educated, open-minded people should be able to accept that you understand yourself the best. It's also a common thing for many arospecs to spend a lot of time questioning themselves before accepting themselves as their arospec label. Even then, some arospecs re-question themselves and have to re-accept themselves as their arospec label. It makes sense for us to struggle so much with self-acceptance, due to the lack of awareness and acceptance for aromanticsm and fellow arospec identities on the aromantic spectrum.

What does alloromantic mean?

Someone who is alloromantic is not on the aromantic spectrum. Alloromantic does not mean "not aro". There are arospec identities that experience romantic attraction that may describe themselves as "not aro", so do not use alloromantic as an all-encompassing label for "not aro". Doing this would exclude arospecs that experience romantic attraction and / or arospecs who validly feel that the aromantic label does not fit them.

Hello, my fellow aros! Today marks the beginning of Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week. It's always the first full week after Valentine's Day, (for obvious reasons, lol). Remember, that being on the aro spectrum is just as valid as any other romantic or sexual orientation. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Celebrate our week however you see fit! 💚🤍🩶🖤

Question(s) As an aromantic person, have you ever fantasized about a romantic relationship with someone?

So, this is a question I’ve been wondering about and wanted to share with you, since I’m not even sure myself if I’m aromantic. But anyway—have you ever fantasized about having a romantic relationship with a real or fictional person, to the point of feeling physical sensations?

Even with your aromanticism?

Is that compatible with it?

Rant Bummed that I’ll probably never experience a cute young romance

I fantasize about being in a relationship sometimes, and I like the idea of having someone that I connect with so well that we could share our lives together and have someone. But the commitment and romance part… it feels so forced.

Besides that, I can’t unmask around anyone but my close family, not fully. So I’ll never be fully relaxed around a partner for instance, and share those relaxing or cute moments, sit together in silence without worrying like hell inside. All that. Blegh… I wish I could have those cute moments without either worrying too much or getting uncomfortable

Question(s) Have any aromantics who have tried relationships before, felt depressed after the breakup despite being uncomfortable in the relationship?

I broke up with my first and probably last partner because I was uncomfortable in the relationship and they were too and we both are questioning aromantics. I thought I would be fine after the breakup but I feel more depressed then I was before, I'm no longer uncomfortable but I can't help but feel like I'm grieving someone who died, despite the fact that she is perfectly ok. We are just friends now but I like them way more than anyone else but sometimes I feel like I hate her, it's really confusing. That's why I wanna know if any aromantics have felt this way before? Or something similar? I also feel to mention that I asked if she wanted to be a qpr instead and they very vaugely turned me down, that's fine but I wonder if that is contributing to me feeling depressed?

Questioning I'm still doubting: am I actually aromantic or just not affectionate?

So... I dont think it has something to do, but I still have trouble trying to figure out my romantic orientation.

I've been wondering for a long time if i am aromantic or nah. Some things that make me question that are for example the fact that i dont think I need a couple to feel fulfilled and satisfied cuz I already am. I also dont fully understand the concept of love. I dont get. You like being with a person due to their personality and stuff... isnt that being like friends? Cuz my friends are my friends due to their personalities! I sometimes wonder how does love feel like. I imagine kissing someone, hugging someone, calling someone my girlfriend but... it isnt right. For me it doesnt feel right. And I am genuinely not an affectionate person and I dont know if it has nothing to do or i am just confused...

But lately... I've been thinking like, why not trying that. Not with anyone specificaly. Just... see what happens whenever it has to. But I am still not sure...

Anyone can help me? Please? I would appreciate it.

Art / Creative So. I wrote a book out of aroace spite

TLDR: Got mad at all m/f pairings ending up married, spent five years writing a soft dystopia about an aggressively platonic duo, had many a meltdown about it, voila.

You know the moment when you’re reading something and are thrilled about some sweet sweet bestie content, only to have everyone end up magically coupled up? Especially when they never even had that vibe before?? Yeah. Same. I’m especially a sucker for male/female friendships that remain platonic, but that’s an even rarer find, and it pisses me off. So much so that a while ago I started working on a WIP about two best friends just for myself cause hey, no one can spring a romantic pairing on me there, right?

It’s since evolved into a much bigger thing and my first non-fic writing project (outside a ten-page trilogy about a space squirrel that I wrote in second grade lol), and I still can’t believe I actually finished it. The title's Project Jade and it's on AO3 as an original work. Took me years and ate so much of my sleep but god that was fun. Don't let anyone tell you spite is bad motivation.

Anyways, I thought I’d share here cause it’s a thing I’m proud of and also… no one understands the frustration as much as you guys, so I figured some of you might also enjoy the read!

If anyone wants 130k words of two besties fucking shit up under a vaguely fascist regime, here it is <3

Discussion Am I falling into a stereotype?

I've never questioned my aromanticality much- I know I am absolutely on the spectrum. Any semi-romantic feelings I've ever felt has never lasted longer than minutes.
So imagine my strange surprise when my brain suddenly suggests dating a someone and chooses a victim- a friend I've known for a long time but don't really talk to. I knew it wasn't a crush; I had no feelings whatsoever-- in fact it was the concept of dating someone and having that concept as almost like an object in possession that was alluring. All of that was purely conscious until I started noticing him in class, making note of his presence, etc.
Did I accidentally fall into "picking someone to crush on"? Is this a normal thing for people?

Also I think I just have some strong platonic attraction going on. Would love for someone to share about that

I Need Advice Guys, what to do if your fellow aromantic says they have a crush on you.

Hi everyone, I have been aroace for the past 5 years, discovered it when I noticed how romance repulsed I actually am when I thought about a crush I thought I have. Like genuine irk in the stomach. Now, I just been friends with this new person who also says they're aromantic. Then they say they like me. They do know I am romance repulsed so umm, I'm really confused. Also, I genuinely like them as a friend so I don't if it's ok to keep being friends with them. I made sure to say I can't accept it tho.

Aro how do you deal with constant invalidation?

when ever I talk in reddit or irl to basically anyone about being Aro or just wanting to be single or not liking romance and finding relationships draining I get endless you havent has the right partner or you will change and its an endless debate. they will tell me im immature and lonely when I tell them I am infact very happy and content. It just a case of everyday fight whenever it comes up. and it makes my bloodpreassure rise. so far only way i have been dealing with this is just to avoid the whole conversations but its not efficient in the long run. what would you do? +when ever I state that if I was in a relationship I would not want to live together or have Kids or be married or sleep in the same bed or text or see More than 2 a week or do romantic things and try to make them understand I simply do not like anything that a romantic relationship essentially is they will just go: well healthy relationship is where you are free and everyones looks different. untill I actually say what I want and they go with: well thats not a relationship or you are a bad partner. and they are so close to getting it but yet so dumb they cannot see what I mean. feels familiar?

Questioning looking for advice

I've been in many relationships in my life (i'm 23 afab) and each one I just said yes when they asked me out as I thought that was right thing to do (going through a autism assessment as I write this and heard about masking to fit in so it could be that? but I don't know) whenever I was in the relationship I didn't really know how to feel or what to do, I just did what I saw online or people do around me, like gift giving, flowers and other things depside being asexual. When they broke up with me, I didn't really feel much. Just like, ok cool. I was slightly upset as I'm a sensitive person but was like ok. while the other was either crying. I have thought I was aromantic a long time ago when I was younger but then found myself melting at women, whenever I thought about being in a relationship with the said person I just couldn't see anything. which has made me thinking maybe I am aroace just don't want to admit the aromantic side of me.

Aroallo What exactly is the difference between sexual and romantic attraction?

Hello! I, F16, am still questioning things about my sexuality but I am quite sure I fall somewhere under the aromantic spectrum while being allosexual.

One thing I struggle to understand is the difference between sexual and romantic attraction. When I was younger (around elementary to middle school), most of my crushes were on people that I either chose or only liked because other people liked them. I can't quite put my finger whether I truly had crushes or simply induced it because other people influenced it.

There's this popular phenomenon called 'compulsory heterosexuality' AKA 'comphet'. I initially thought that ALL comphet people would just choose a crush while feeling nothing for them. But I did hear a former comphet lesbian talk about how she would only gain infatuation for a man (which I assume are all the physical symptoms of a crush like getting nervous) after other people would tease her or someone would ask her. And that is exactly what I experienced with all my crushes growing up! I felt neutral towards them, but then my friends would call them attractive or I would get teased of liking someone I'm friends with. Then all of a sudden I'm conscious of what I should be feeling towards them and now I'm super jittery around them. Or is that literally just a normal crush and I'm just talking?

Nevertheless, I never had the desire to actually date* or *kiss or hug any of my crushes in these stages. Someone told me it's because I was, well, 12-14, but that just stayed when I went to high school! When I hit puberty, I still 'chose' crushes by choosing the most conventionally attractive guy in the room but there were also a few girls who I maybe genuinely liked? I have no clue... I did wonder what it's like to kiss them, but even after hugging my crushes, I feel I'm waiting for a feeling that never happens.

But anyways, my point is - my personal crushes are just a mixture of me getting nervous around their presence, staring, and daydreaming about them without any desire to get into a romantic relationship. The only desire I would have with them emotionally is to get to know them better. I would also have physical desires, and it was literally ONLY physical desires like idk, touching biceps. Did I mention I love biceps? Literally. Love. Them. Could stare at them all day.

But see, literally what is the difference between someone who is alloromantic and allosexual and an alloaro person? I'm assuming a traditional relationship is just an exclusive sexual partnership with your best friend. But doesn't that... also fit what alloaro desire? Like what even is romantic attraction. Is it the crush factor or the desire to date that person or to be chosen by that person? I'm really confused actually. Am I just missing out on something or do I actually experience romantic attraction? I can relate to my friends talking about crushes regarding EVERYTHING besides the weird emotional doom and relationship thingys that come with it.

Since I'm turning 17 next year, I actually wanted to try dating and kissing as someone who's been single and never even talked to anyone since middle school. But I want to know exactly what I want and don't want. My mindset is that I can't exactly be sure of what I am until I've tried everything. Girls. Guys. Dating. I've kinda talked to two guys this summer who are conventionally attractive. I initially got really excited because they both have nice biceps, but upon actually conversing, I didn't really... feel anything. 😔

But yeah, if someone could please enlighten me what the difference between sexual and romantic attraction is? If I've ever felt it? At all? Because to me, traditional relationships just seem like a best friends with benefits with extra steps.

Aro Have a rare crush and it’s soooooo weird

I (19F) am in college and generally I would consider myself sapphic aroace. I dated somebody once and it was really not my cup of tea, and since then I’ve had confusing feelings for people because I sometimes hyperfixate on my friends. However, recently I think I’ve developed an honest to goodness crush on someone and I just want to say it’s so so so weird. We’ve only met once so I feel awkward saying hi to them but I get excited whenever they walk by and my stomach sort of hurts when I think about them. I don’t really want this but I guess I’ll just hope it goes away.

Question(s) first "real" crush?

Im a female in mid late 20's. I've known I'm aroace since im 18, never had any type of romantic or sexual relationship my whole life. For the first time in my life I developed what I think is a crush on someone. We only know each other online and they learned about my crush after already knowing I'm aromantic. We had a few conversations about what that meant, but at the moment settled in a friendly relationship with some type of romantic attachment. We're not dating and are open to being with other people, but also have our own agreements with each other. But during this I've got to know them better, I realized for the first time what it feels like to know someone you would like to grow old with.

Sometimes I worry they're only in this with me for pity, to avoid "breaking my heart", or thinks I'll get over it soon, but during the past few months I've been trying to understand my feelings and also how to be there for her. I think the part about being aromantic that I never lived before was the effort that you have to put if you love someone enough to want to be with them romantically.

Folks with alo partbers, what's the hardest part for you?

I Need Advice I can't tell if I have a crush, or not.

I've only been attracted to one person in my entire life. But my autistic brain has had a lot of fake "crushes" over the years. Half of them were subconsciously to fit in, and the other half were just limerence.

I know that I'm on the aromantic spectrum. But I have such a hard time telling the difference between having a crush and just finding someone super cool.

Although, I think I've been doing more to talk to this person than I have with anyone else. I'm even considering watching a show for them (I hate getting into new fandoms.)

If anyone has any advice on how to tell if you have a crush or not, please let me know! :')

Discussion Aromantic Significant Life Events

Many of the significant life events that are considered special, worth celebrating and mark the passage of time center around romantic relationships - date night, weddings, anniversaries. If you are not planning on having these significant life events, where are you finding significance outside of romance? What/how are you celebrating? What are the things that you make special in your life?

I am envisioning my life outside of romance and want to know what others are doing to celebrate what’s significant in their lives.

Discussion I faked having a crush and it led to me to wonder if i'm on the aro-spec

Im 18f, never been in a relationship or had any "romantic" crushes. when i was 14 i faked having a crush so i an fit in, no one believed me when i said i had no crush. I used to hate myself for not liking a person and thought i was weird. I was telling this to my friend one day and she said that i might me aroace or on the spec. I thought about it and im wondering whether thats true.

I never had the feeling of "wanting" to date someone, but wanted to date in general. I like the idea of a relationship but i cannot imagine myself with a romantic partner. It just doesn't feel like 'me' yk. But i like watching romance shows, and wished i could experience something like that, but if someone asked me out i'd most likely decline, even if they are good because i genuinely doubt whether i'd have genuine feelings for someone. One of my fear is dating someone and realising after a while i never liked them in the first place. I've also faked having celebrity crush or fictional ones and i dont rlly understand how people have crush on them, is it just because they look good?. And i see people with crushes and how they act silly by writing their initials together, imagining fake scenarios, talking about them during sleepovers it all sounds fun but deep down i know i may never relate to that.

Have any of you guys experienced something like this and thought of being on the aro-spec? pls share your insight about this

nothing else to say really, just wanted some positivity on the feed. i feel like a lot of people find being aromantic to be depressing, but realizing i don’t need a romantic connection and find strength in good platonic connections has been very liberating for me. people act like romantic connections are the center of our being! and while i’ve lost a lot of relatability with some close ones, i’ve really found a lot of confidence in myself again.

for a while i denied myself cause i get fomo about romantic relationships, but i’ve accepted myself as i am and my platonic relationships have gotten stronger as a result. this shit is kind of great, i cannot lie.

just wanted to share this because it feels like a lot of people come on here freaking out. and i understand that because it’s treated like a crucial part of life. being so different is very isolating. it’s okay, though. not feeling romantic connections strongly or at all can be a very fulfilling way to live. i’m excited for the connections i have and the ones i’ll build in the future. anyways stay proud guys🥹

I Need Advice I think i might be aromantic that is inlove with the idea of love need advice

I think im only inlove with the idea of love and someone loving me and the validation of it all rather than actually loving someone. When I daydream I always have the same script of someone loving me admiring me etc. It doesn't matter who the other person is in my daydreams (celebrity crushes, fictional characters etc.) I notice that i dont really care for who the other person/character is i just wanna feel romantic love towards someone and to be loved romantically.

Also im 18F and have never been in a relationship before nor had crushes I think i had one or two but i never really was emotionally into it did not have a hard time moving on from them.

Im young and for now yk i dont think there is anything wrong with living in these daydreams and fantasies but I'm scared of what will happen if i am older. I cant be 30 or 40 smth doing silly daydreaming 😭 I wanna be able to feel that spark and pull towards someone but im afraid it will never happened and i dont know what to do with my life :b

Im not really sure what type of advice i need or want just any advice will

Questioning First girlfriend and I realize I’m on the arospec

So I just recently got a relationship with my first girlfriend and she’s never been in a relationship before either. I had never had feeling for anybody before and still have never experienced romantic feelings. I came out as lesbian to my family after getting in a relationship, but now even after kissing her and stuff I haven’t felt any like connection past being really good friends. I think at first I though I was lesbian because girls have a lot more aesthetic attraction for me, and she was a new friend, but now I’m getting uncomfortable when she holds my hand in public and pays special attention to me. I don’t know if I should just ask her to pause our relationship, or if I should keep going and just see how I feel and not hurt her. School is starting soon though and I don’t want anything to be awkward between us because we are in the same friend group. I need advice on what to say to her in the event I break up with her, and also some questions to ask myself to understand my feelings. Please help and send advice🙏🙏

I Need Advice 18 (F) oh no! I've caught feelings I THINK for my no relationship "situation"

Hi, 18 (F) and I have caught feelings for my alleged FWB. I think I have a crush on him and I'm sure I'm sexually attracted to him. I'M CONFUSED. I have no words to describe what I'm feeling and I have no idea how he feels, I THINK.

I know I like him, but not romantically. I REALLY enjoy his company, and he's told me a couple times that he does like me and that he also REALLY enjoys my company. He doesn't believe in relationships for personal reasons and he's made that very clear. He wants to be my friend and he is my friend and we're both sexually attracted to each other though we haven't had sex yet because of scheduling reasons and work and school. 😭

Where things get a bit blurry is he views relationships negatively because of his upbringing. I'm relatively neutral on "relationships" as I've never been in one, at least in the heteroamanormative monogamous way. I'm definitely not a monogamous kind of a person and I rarely if ever feel this big romantic feeling toward somebody. My feelings for him are like grand but just in a "I really like them" way and not a "I'm gonna marry him one day way".

But I don't know whether or not if he found himself in a good partnership with someone, he'd accept a traditional relationship. I don't know if he's romantic. I don't know if he wants a relationship relationship with me, but I KINDA sure he does but he knows I don't want one. And he as well isn't aware of the fact that I like him. Or like-like him. We have a very banterful dynamic where I'm playfully rude and off-putting and he tries to keep up so I don't think he thinks I'm as sexually attracted to him as I actually am.

What I do know sort of for sure, is that we both don't want labels or the seriousness that comes with monogamous pairings.

I'm off term at uni so I have a lot of free time on my hands to text and send him reels and stuff, but his term is on in uni so he's less free. I should add that he texted first almost 2 and a half months ago and this was during summer break and back then we texting all the way into the late night and stuff and now that's not happening cause of school obviously and for a while there I thought we were falling off but we went on a second date and it was AMAZING so we are still good.

Soooo now I'm just sat idle ALL DAY EVERYDAY waiting for a text back from him, and it makes me sick to say the least. This wasn't supposed to turn out this way. It was supposed to be casual and simple. Now it's too much feelings involved and it's become complicated and I'm going crazy and I don't even know if I can even call myself aromantic anymore. 😭😭😭

HELP!

Questioning possibly aro?

i've been wrestling the idea of being aro for a couple weeks but i'm still kinda unsure; my entire life, romance was always in books and movies and tv and songs for me. i can understand it better in those terms. but the thought of me being in love with somebody doesn't seem impossible but i'm not actively pursuing it. i love my life, i love my relationships with my friends and my siblings. i'm fine being alone. when i think about being in a relationship, i want to keep my independence, too. i have no problem with flirting or hooking up but i don't want to just be somebody's girlfriend or spouse and lose myself because i'm in a romantic relationship. a lot of my close friends are married, getting married, having kids and, i'm happy for them, but i'm not and i have no desire to. and my examples of romantic relationships growing up were less than ideal, deplorable on a good day. i guess what i'm trying to figure out is whether i'm actually aro or if i'm just not interested in the people i live around. any wisdom???

I Need Advice Should I tell my bf? Would it break our relationship? Help >m<

Pronouns:

Bf = he/they

Me = it/its

So, I got into a relationship with my boyfriend before I found out I'm aroace. I knew I get queerplatonic attraction easily, and it's much harder for me to get a proper crush, but I didn't think much of it cause idk-

I'm aceflux, my bf knows that much, but my discovery of being somewhere on the aro-spec is very... VERY... recent. Idk what microlabel of aro I'd be, and tbh I haven't done much research cause I'm scared that it would be like admitting that I don't know what romantic love feels like, and therefore I've been lying to my bf that I'm in love with him.

I love him, I really do, but idk in what way. It doesn't feel platonic, I wouldn't wanna be friends, I wanna be more. It's not queerplatonic, I know very much how that feels, and it's nothing like what I feel for them. It's not romantic, I like dates and the feelings that come with them, just don't specifically want it with anyone in particular, and kisses feel wrong other than from my queerplatonic partner(I'm poly). It's definitely not sexual, not even going into that.

But I'm not asking what type of love I feel for him. I'm wondering if I should tell them or if I should even stay with him? How would I even tell him? I don't wanna break their heart, and I don't wanna end the relationship, but idk how he'd react to me being aroace? We've been in a relationship for over a year now, and it might feel like I've been lying to him... I just want the relationship to change, not break away.. But what if telling them does break our relationship? I don't wanna hide it from them, but idk how to tell him or if I should even tell him

I'm probably overthinking, but I just need help before I tell him in the worst possible way or something
