Maybe the wrong subreddit (and flair), but any idea what is going on with the antler-like things on the creepy guy on the left? I don’t meet the requirements to post in r/weird even tho I feel it fits there. Old photo we found while looking through a bin of family photos.

Photo is likely from the 1930s (ish), somewhere in upstate New York. We know the folks in the foreground, no clue to the guy on the left. Weird.

Okay so i took this photo on vacation at night time and a bunch of stuff went wrong. The photo in question was taken with a Canon 600d and Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens, at

● 17mm

● f2.8

● Shutter spees 20 sec

There are artifacts in the darks, blown out lights everywhere, worst of the blown out lights is the church at sea and to me i can't do anything with the sky (the sky thing is probably a vision/skill issue), and even before processing the image it was all kinds of blury. Was there any way to take this image and make it have less problems, that is my question to all of you.

I have a Canon 5D mk4 and am primarily using the 70-300mm IS USM Nano and 70-200 L IS II. (Photos attached are with the 70-300)
I get asked to do photos for a couple of dog clubs I help out with and am also a member of and generally my photos are great - Usually dog and dog/owner portraits and general club photos.
But there's one thing I've always struggled with and that's to get good photos of really fast moving dogs - usually during agility shows, fly ball or just dogs generally going crazy - especially when the dogs are smaller.
I do have some success and have taken some really great photos in the past but struggle when there's limited space and/or the dogs are coming at me at an oblique angle or directly towards me - usually there's just no time to react and they often zig and zag randomly.
I've been practicing with my 3yr old lab and 13 week old spaniel puppy in the back garden - luckily both LOVE doing zoomies regularly but as you can see I am having some trouble maintaining a good focus. They are just SO damned quick!
I usually keep the ISO manually set around 600-800 to achieve at least a 1/2500 shutter speed and am using servo AF. I try and keep the aperture as low as possible whilst giving me enough room to get a decent area in focus but as you can see sometimes it seems both me and the camera struggles sometimes as you can see from the picture of the little spaniel with the grass in focus behind him.
I mainly use the 70-300mm when outside in good light, even tho the f is higher but purely because the AF on that lens is so fast. When weather is duller I might switch to the 70-200 L mk2 or if we move inside a barn which also presents another issue I struggle with - and is entirely why I bought the 70-200mm as when inside the barns on dark winter evenings with the artifical lights it's SO hard when ANY movement is involved.
Almost sometimes seems that there just isn't a lens fast enough... (And I can't afford mirrorless!)

But yeah, any help greatly appreciated as REALLY want to get better at this!

By "harsh", I suppose I mean high-contrast, like shooting into the sun, for example. The colors are all quite there already (at least, in my opinion). Besides some very, very simple touching up, is there much else to do besides completely change it into something else?

I am looking for a quality camera ($500-600) that is good for landscape and wildlife pictures for trips I take. I am relatively new and looking to have a camera that lasts a long time while also being good quality. I'd prefer new over refurbished. Any suggestions?

I do not have any equipment besides my phone. I am in the U.S.

Important things to note. I do photography as a side-gig. I have no desire to make it a full time operation. I don’t do any high-stakes photoshoots (ie. weddings) and my sessions are designed for families and couples who want quick & affordable professional photos. The rest of my time is spent doing creative shoots I dream up with local models, so no money is exchanged. I net less than $1500 annually. I shoot with a Canon RP and use a lens adapter for my canon EF mount 50mm & 85mm lens.  I don’t have the funds to upgrade both my body & my lenses. It’s one or the other.
 

All that said, I asked my 3 closest photographer friends (2 of 3 do primarily weddings & it is their livelihood & the 3rd also does a few weddings per year) about upgrading to a RF mount 50mm lens thinking it would have better relay with my camera body since I could ditch the adapter. However, they all said it’d be better for me to upgrade my camera body to a R5 and keep using the adapter and EF mount lenses. Can someone explain to me if that’s actually true? And if so, why?

I think I was a third-tier backer and I got my Magmod Magstands today, well before anticipated. I got the 9 foot and 11 foot with the magnetic clip to hold them together.

Has anyone else here received theirs? What are your impressions?

So far I like the height and how stable it feels fully extended. It would take a serious bump or major wind to knock it over. Also, it obviously is crazy-fast to set up.

The downsides are as follows:

- Big and heavy when collapsed. It won’t fit in my usual Rugged light stand bag. Much heavier than I expected.

- Even though it feels stable as in it won’t fall down it is REALLY wobbly. Also, all of the section points have some side-to-side give so once you have a light on it you can wiggle the light back and forth about an inch in either directions because there is a little bit of give from each section. Might make really precise lighting placement an issue. I mostly got this for wedding dance floors so I’m not trying to be very precise.

Anyway, I’d love to hear from anyone who has used them in the field.

So I’ve been really wanting to get a point and shoot camera and actually bought the G7X Mark 3 last year but ended up returning it as I thought it was quite expensive (£820). I ended up getting iPhone 17 Pro instead but it just hasn’t done it for me. Would you still say the camera is worth buying? I have looked into Sony RX100IV as the G7X doesn’t have a viewfinder and also a Fujifilm. But I am a beginner and don’t really want to be editing or overly changing settings on the camera which I know would be the case for Sony and Fujifilm. Is the Canon still worth getting? They have also increased the price to £860 in the UK which is a lot for a digital camera. I am struggling to get my hands on it with UK Retailers particularly Canon Website directly or John Lewis.

The reason for wanting it is for holidays, special occasions, just building memories to look back at. It’s also exciting to have a camera especially for taking pictures and leaving phone off. Is the g7x worth it for this? Any advice would be appreciated.

I cannot get this work and I know it’s not the SD card because i’ve tried two of them (one of which was brand new) and it still says this, canon rebel eos t5 is the camera. I think something may be wrong with the SD card slot because the click to eject feature doesn’t work I have to manually pull it out with tweezers so my best guess is that but idk.

I've got a Fujifim X-T20 with 35mm and 50mm prime lenses. I'm looking for a wide angle prime to round out the set. Both of these TTartisan primes are about the same price, and I can't decide which one to get. This would be for street photography and travel.

Any advice on which I should get - the faster glass or the slightly wider pancake lens?

I enjoy taking photos with my vivo X300 Ultra recently, and I've been pretty impressed with what a phone can do these days.

Is it worth it to upgrade to an actual camera to continue taking photos, primarily of nature, or should just stick with phone?

I'm not necessarily looking to replace a dedicated camera with a phone and I know there are differences in sensors, lenses, depth of field, RAW files, controls, etc. But I'm more curious about what you notice when you're actually out shooting.

In a month or two I'm getting one of these for my R6mkII. Originally I was set on the 90mm but after looking at second hand 85s it turns out they're priced similarily (700-900~) which has me considering both.

The 85 is, I suspect, a much superior lens in pretty much all ways. I imagine the image quality it produces, especially wide open, is gonna be noticably cleaner and the fact that it has AF are the biggest considerations for me.

The reason why I'm still not sure is that I really value compactness and handling. Currently I have a 7artisan RF 35mm 1.4 pretty much glued to my camera and I love that thing - now I want an 85 to pair with it for my goto, lightweight loadout. In theory, there's not that much dimensional difference between the 85 and the 90 and they both weigh about the same but the 85 has that bulblike proportion and will have to be paired with my EF-RF adapter which will make it a less compact package in the end. It just looks really awkward to handle tbh.

So I was wondering if anyone has experience with both and have some thoughts? If the 90 was like 200-300 bucks, that would make my choice easy but since that's not the case I find it hard to ignore the advantages of the canon 85. I will probably be shooting the lens fully open a lot (at night), that's why I'm interested in such fast lenses in the first place.

Advice appreciated from all photographers, not just boudoir photographers.

I believe this could be a good opportunity for me for several reasons

1. Even though I'm in a "rust belt" lower COL midwestern city, most local boudouir photos are charging around $2k minimum investment. Printed albums run into the thousands, and are separate of the session fee. I'd be happy to start with something around a quarter of that (just for digital photos- the average price for 20-30 digital photos here is around $1600 if not higher), which would open me up to clients who are not able to easily part away with $2k for a luxury and not necessity item.
2. I have personal access to a demographic that strongly relies and needs these type of photos done, and would offer free shoots to them to begin with, asking nothing more than that they agree to be used for my portfolio if I choose to use their photos, and to leave a good review if they are satisfied with my work.
3. I already found a great studio that's pretty well-appointed for this particular purpose that charges just $80/hr, so to begin with I wouldn't have to outright lease a studio plus appoint it with furniture and greenery, not knowing whether it will go anywhere or not.

The biggest thing holding me back is that I don't already have professional photography experience, but I am learning that many boudoir photogs started that way- they weren't all expert photographers, many were novices. I have some experience with a professional camera (no longer have it unfortunately) so I'd definitely have to buy a better one and play around with it for a good while before embarking.

1. Could anyone suggest a more budget camera that's good enough for taking good portraits?
2. I know lighting is obviously super important. On some days if you're lucky enough and have large windows (which this studio does) you can easily get away without using extra lighting equipment if you know how to set the proper settings. However, I know it's more likely that it would be necessary to invest in lighting equipment as well. Anyone who could recommend the most vital lighting equipment needed, and if possible also more budget priced?
3. I've found that thankfully, there are a number of successful boudoir photogs that have youtube channels covering all kinds of stuff including the best poses, something I will definitely need to study- along with investing time on other subjects they cover as well. Although their equipment advice at this stage unfortunately may not be catered to me, because they're using the best and probably pricest equipment.
4. Retouching photos- I know that every boudoir photog retouches photos. However in this age of AI everything,, are there not programs that may already offer this as a built-in feature? Does everyone generally use Photoshop for retouching?
5. Lastly, anything that you might offer as far as the most important lessons you've learned during your time as a boudoir photographer, especially with regard to image quality, or things that most clients are looking for? Unlike one of the boudoir photographers I previously used, I will definitely allow preconsultations to get a good idea of the kinds of shoots and ambiance they are looking for, as well as allowing them to send "inspo photos" (that I'm well aware that I probably can't entirely replicate, but will help as far as determining the mood, posing, and lighting they're looking for.

Hi everyone,

I need a bit of wisdom to help me decide buying a new camera and lenses.

First a bit of background - I am in the UK and an amateur enthusiast, started with Nikon D3100 like 16 years ago. Really enjoyed shooting with it. After 4 years with that camera I got a D610 (full-frame, FX) and have loved it. At the time I took it everywhere, for hikes and travels, with 2-3 lenses and tripod. used it for landscape and wildlife, covered family occasions and functions. Captured lots of memories! I have the std 24-85 mm AFS VR kit lens, a 50mm 1.8G AF-S prime lens, a Tamron 90mm AF 1:2.8 macro/portrait lens, and a Nikon 80-400mm AFS f/4.5-5.6G VR.

But I have almost stopped using it since having kids. No room to carry a heavy full frame camera with lenses as extra pair of clothes, nappies, food and what-not occupy my backpack. Also no time to tinker with pics on a computer, etc. We now increasingly use our smartphones for photos.

So I am thinking of selling my kit and buy a more compact mirrorless camera. They do seem to be a good option now, should give good performance but small and light so I can carry it around along with other kids stuff in my backpack; not too heavy for my 8 year old to hold and take occasional pics; with good auto modes so my wife can use it too.

Can you folks please suggest 2-3 options that I can then research further into. Ideally I don't want a significant drop in performance from D610. Thinking of going with an APS-C/cropped sensor instead of full-frame as it keeps things lighter and cheaper! But if there are good full-frame options then I can think about it. Not looking for smaller than APS-C as worried about low light performance. Definitely need a good viewfinder. If I can share pics from the camera itself by connecting it with phone/iPad then that's going to be a good bonus so I can share pics with family/grandparents asap. Photos will mostly be seen on phone/iPad screens, TV and printed to be hanged around the house - so not looking for insane megapixels. I was finding D610 24mp raw files already too slow to process on my laptop.

Rough quotes that I have got for my kit from used camera sellers in UK is around £1k, so that's roughly my budget, may be add another 200-300 quids max. I can buy a used camera in good condition to get a bit better gear for the money. (side question - should I sell everything to a used camera seller or try to sell individual items on ebay? )

Nikon Z50 II seems to be a good contender and since I am used to Nikon, I am a bit biased towards it. But another capable/suitable camera for similar price from another brand would be good to know. At the moment I am not looking to have a wide range of lenses - at the moment Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is very appealing because of its size, or go with Nikon Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR for versatility or Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f/2.8 VR for low light performance.

So I have only recently taken up photography so I'm pretty clueless about a lot of it.

I want to practice (self)portraits and product photography in my apartment. My apartment is pretty tiny so I don't have space for much equipment.

I was thinking of buying the following lighting:

Has anyone actually had to use B&H’s return policy, especially for cameras, lenses, or other expensive equipment?

I’m curious about the inspection process. If B&H receives the item and determines that it’s “damaged” or not in the same condition they expect, what was your experience? Did they charge you a restocking fee, reduce your refund, or refuse the return?
I’ve seen the policy about them potentially charging a minimum 15% restocking fee if the return doesn’t meet their conditions, but I’m wondering how this actually plays out in real life.

Has anyone personally dealt with this? Was the process fair, or did it feel like they were looking for a reason to deduct money from your refund?

I have done double exposure before, but these effects hit different, rather than the usyal just overlay images the transition is smooth or really abrupt, I would love to know more whats going on here and how to continue experiementing, roll is Thailand x Montjuic Cemetary.
