Hello,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m currently struggling with a camera buying decision and hoping I can possibly get some perspective from folks who might have these cameras or be in a similar situation.
(1) Budget, country, and currency: $4000, USA, USD
(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?: Om-1, E-M5. OM is large, complex. E-M5 is just kind of old.
(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?: mostly shoot landscape and environmental portraits of my kid/wife/dog. Maybe some urban/architecture stuff.
(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?: Exclusively for photography, I have 0 interest in shooting video.
Some background: I’m currently shooting mostly on an OM-1 mk1, and have quite a few m43 lenses. I also have an old E-M5 mk1 that I’ll bring out when I don’t want to carry the larger OM-1. I’m looking at purchasing a high end ‘everyday walking around camera’ to replace the E-M5, which I’d like to take with me on trips that are not photography centric (for example, I’m taking a business trip to Spain in October and want to have a nice camera with me, but don’t want to bring lenses etc). I’d also like this new camera to be a different shooting experience from the Olympus cameras I have, and I’ve always wanted a rangefinder…
To that end, I’m currently looking at the Fuji X100VI or a used Leica Q2. The price difference is somewhat significant, but given the stock shortages around the Fuji, it’s not as extreme as it could be. Based on prices I’ve seen, I’d likely be paying roughly $2600USD for a ‘like new’ X100VI, or around $4000USD for an excellent condition Q2. I’m ok with that price difference, but paying so much above retail for the X100VI just sort of bothers me, hence considering the Leica. I realize that the Fuji is definitely going to be smaller, but the Leica is still likely to feel much smaller than my OM-1 (I assume).
Questions:
1. Will I feel that the Leica is ‘portable’ on a similar level to the E-M5 or the Fuji, or does the fairly large lens make it feel more like a full sized camera than a compact?
2. Is a roughly $1500 price difference ‘worth it’ between the two cameras? If the Fuji was available at retail price, I’d certainly just go with that…but paying almost $3k for it feels kind of silly to me.
3. As a decidedly hobbyist photographer, is the Leica pointless for me? Will I struggle with it more than other cameras? I generally shoot RAW, and actually enjoy editing photos, so film simulations/sooc jpgs aren’t a massive draw for me on the Fuji (but nice to have).
4. Anything else I should know or consider? I’m aware that OM is announcing a new camera on the 9th, but I think I prefer the idea of trying something new, with a bigger sensor.
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
