Identification Hybrid?

This blood parrot was advertised as a yuan bao blood parrot, but I get the feeling she might be a hybrid. She just looks a bit different and she’s definitely more feisty than my other blood parrot.

Afr | Help Can ya’ll tell me what each of these cichlids are?

So I am new to cichlids but not new to the hobby. These cichlids were given to me by a family friend who had to leave them behind for new job about a month ago. I have done tons of research on how to keep them and care for them. I know they are aggressive in nature.

I’d like to know what species each one is so I can watch out for specific behaviors and care. If someone would be kind enough to identify these, would be highly appreciated.

So far I have seen minimal aggression, this is a 55 gallon with a 200 gallon canister filter.

General help What’s the single glass-banging, big-personality centerpiece fish for a 29g (in hard water)?

Hey everyone!

I’m working on setting up a 29-gallon tank and want to go the solo showcase route. Instead of a bunch of tiny schooling fish, I want one single, bold, noticeable fish with a huge personality that will claim the entire tank as its kingdom and interact with me through the glass.

One big detail: My tap water naturally runs pretty hard, so I’m looking for a species that naturally thrives in hard water/higher pH without having to mess with tons of water adjusters.

What single fish would you put in a 29g that hits these marks?

  • Big personality / wet pet vibe
  • Prefers hard water
  • Stands out visually and commands the whole tank

Looking for your absolute favorite solo centerpiece ideas for this footprint! Drop your suggestions!

Got this little guy from petsmart on a whim because he looked so good. He's about 2" with a beautiful light blue color. I bought with the assumption that he is a HAP that was labeled as a peacock. Maybe in the Fryeri family? Thanks

CA | Help Aggression in Parrot Cichlids

Hello, could you please advise me on what I should do?

I have a 370-liter aquarium containing several Labidochromis Yellow cichlids and two hybrid parrot cichlids.

One of the parrot cichlids is constantly terrorizing the other. It does not bother any of the other fish and only tries to attack the one that is slightly smaller. There are enough hiding places and plenty of space in the aquarium, but the aggression does not stop.

How can I stop or reduce the parrot cichlid’s aggression?

SA | Help Jbl Cristalprofi e1502 greenline with South American cichlid waste?

So I have in my tank a Severus and acara pair and since the Severum is growing I am going to need a filter upgrade, and I was wondering if if the cristalprofi e1502 would be a suitable upgrade since it had a big prefilter for waste? Right now I have a juwel internal filter and the top filterfloss pad just gets gunked up really quick and I am afraid it is only going to be worse when the Severum is older. If you have one, how bad is the noise, I heard that’s somewhat of a problem with some of these filters.

CA | Video Anyone know what my Polar Blue Parrot is doing…?

There seems to be a glitch in the matrix… for the past 3 or so days straight, all my PBP has been doing is swimming back and forth repeatedly against the glass in one little section at the front of the tank. He’s completely normal otherwise. If I go up to the tank he’ll swim up to the top to greet me and beg for food, and after lights out he’ll go sleep in the log with his domestic partner Mr. Pearl, the platinum parrot. But during the day, all he wants to do is swim back and forth in the same spot… What could this be from and is there something wrong with him? No signs of stress, eating normally, not being picked on, etc. I’m completely stumped… In the 6 or so months I’ve had him (since he was a little baby) he’s never done anything like this. Typically he’s swimming all throughout the tank and never really stayed in one spot. Thoughts?

General help How much to feed?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my new tank. Added them few days ago. I'm a beginner and wanted to know how much to feed them as they look hungry all the time. I have Taayo bits, optimum 3x1 small and herbivore small sinking pellets. They seem to eat everything. Feeding dollars is a bit tough as they get scared easily even if I add sinking pellets in their space and others seem to eat it even after eating their food.

So I was just wondering if I'm feeding them less. I give them 2-3 pinches of anyone of those once a day.

I have:

2 Electric Blue cichlids

2 Yellow Lab cichlids

2 Red blood parrots

4 Silver dollars

1 Pink Convict cichlid

Also do i get placos or any other algae eater fish? It's a 75 gallons tank.

Afr | Help Finally got my mbuna tank stocking ratio right after two failed attempts

Took me almost a year of trial and error to figure out why my 55 gallon kept turning into a bloodbath every few months. First attempt I had way too few males relative to females and one guy basically terrorized the whole tank chasing anything that moved. Second attempt I overcorrected and crammed in too many species without enough rockwork to break up sight lines, so the aggression just spread out instead of decreasing.

What finally worked was going heavier on males than most people recommend for a tank this size. I run one male to every two females for each species now instead of the typical one to three or four, and the aggression gets split around enough that nobody gets singled out for weeks at a time. Combined that with piling in way more limestone than I thought I needed, basically doubling what I originally had, so there are constant breaks in visibility.

Current stock is yellow labs, red zebras, and a small group of acei, kept intentionally understocked at around 18 fish total in the 55. I know a lot of mbuna tanks run heavier bioloads than that but I'd rather have slightly less crowding and calmer fish than chase the "more is better" approach everyone online seems to push.

Water changes are still 40 percent weekly, sand substrate, pH sits naturally around 8.0 with the crushed coral mixed into the caves. Nitrates never creep above 20 before the next change which honestly surprised me given how much these guys eat.

Curious what male to female ratios other mbuna keepers have settled on, especially for tanks in the 40 to 75 gallon range. Feels like every source gives a different number and I only found mine through a lot of dead fish and rearranged rockwork.
