General To all the freshies

I’ve seen soo many freshmen posts asking if their course load is doable and those scrutinizing the absolute stupidity of how the classes are scheduled. There also are some posts that says one should figure these things out on their own because after all you guys are college students now. I understand both sides. But I want all the incoming freshmen to know that the fact that you guys care soo much about your classes really does speak volume about how much u guys genuinely care about wanting to do well and leave a mark in ur college experience. It gives me hope for ucsd’s future. Welcome to college. Some experience might absolutely suck but somewhere along the way u learn a few valuable lessons that perhaps might come useful later on.

Question why is it so hard to get into research

i’ve been emailing so many professors and using the REAL portal to apply but all I get are 0 responses and if I do get one, they say their labs are full. i seriously don’t know what to do—how do you find professors that do research and are taking people in?

General Class TIPs for incoming students.

Make sure you are looking up UCSD Courses Offerings per department. You will have a better shot securing your classes if you know when more professors will be teaching it. Example: Physic 2A shows only 1 class offered for Fall Quarter, so the odds of getting into this class is very tight. Although, Winter Quarter shows 3 sections that will be offered which means you are way more likely to get into the Winter Quarter. Always look up each Course offerings (just google it) to see when your best chances are to get into a class you need.

Again example: just google UCSD Course Offerrings for Math which brings up this for ALL math: https://math.ucsd.edu/students/planned-course-offerings

Everything's full & can't even book GEs cause they either aren't offered this quarter or have prereqs that are also already full.

Rant/Complaint I'm classless

First of all my TEA requests never got approved so I worked my ahhhh off in HS for nothing *crying emoji* (no more CAT) and then timing the "book" button just right at 1:59:58PT did nothing as well for my other priority class

Who else did this happen to? I can't even waitlist yettt DDD: Will 2nd pass be better? thxs !

(also I'm not entirely classless I was able to book 1 singular GE which counts toward my college, not my 4 my major unfortunately)

Question I got NO classes i wanted as an incoming freshman what do i do?

Context im an incoming engineering freshman got a 2pm enrollment time, and even though i was ready on the spot waiting for the time to tick i couldnt book any even the ones that shows available seating for a brief moment, itll show an error message either on capacity or something along the lines of waitlisting. ended up choosing two random classes one for DEI and another random one because i couldnt find any other that really fulfilled my GEs....

if anyone has the same experience and has advice for what to do, what do i do?
I'm panicking because i have no math at all booked....like waitlist and my chances of even getting the ones i want. so stressed

Question Do Math 20C Classes Open More Slots When the Quarter Starts?

I was eyeing the 4pm lectures since they fit perfectly with my schedules and a job, and in 10 minutes all the slots already vaporized.
Do Math 20C classes usually open up more seats, or is it just cooked? 😭

I was hyperventilating trying to get classes as an incoming freshman. I ended up getting what I wanted with very few spots left. Thank you and good luck to those who are going soon ❤️

Discussion First Year with Fourth Year Suitmates

Hello!! I just got my room assignment a few days ago and contacted my suitmates and turns out majority, if not all of them are fourth years! May I ask why this happened? I thought first years usually are suitmates with other first years??

My roommate also cancelled last week and I still haven’t gotten a new roommate yet so I’m very concerned about not finding my social circle in my suite… will my new roommate from the waitlist be a first year or another fourth year 😭😭😭

Question Is there anything to do if you’re conditionally booked?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’m an incoming freshman trying to register for CAT1 but my TEA request for the course hasn’t been finalized. Right now it says that it’s been conditionally approved, so when I went to register for the course it says it’s been conditionally booked. Do I just wait and do nothing until my TEA request gets its final approval?? Will I have to revisit the class and book again afterwards?

Rant/Complaint why is it so difficult to find classes that fit together??

i may just be incredibly stupid but it’s so difficult and i keep needing to compromise and choose worse profs or super early/late times. not sure if im just missing something but i can’t for the life of me figure out a way to spend less time on this. ive been using that webreg emulator a student made, but im still struggling.

Rant/Complaint Randomized enrollment windows is terrible

Upvotes

I was dealt a 4pm window on the second day and am feeling frustrated with what I have. Of the four classes I was aiming to book, I could only register for DOC 1. Even then, one of my backups wouldn’t let me register even though I had an approved TEA request! The other three were available with many seats upwards of 100 still open this morning, but nope, I couldn’t grab a single one. I honestly wouldn’t have a problem if the latest first pass people had an earlier second pass, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I guess I’m cooked in both rounds, ucsd please fix TSS and make the system fair for everyone

Question UCSD TSS TEA/Courses advice

Im an incoming freshman at Muir, and today during my first pass registration I was unable to book MCWP40 and I realized they are yet to review my transcript and Ap scores😆. So ok whatever i submit a TEA request and it gets denied in ONE MINUTE. So I submit another one and the exact same thing happens. If anyone has any info regarding what I should do plz lmk as I was trying to knock this out first quarter.

Additionally, I was planning on taking Chem6A, and realized I cannot due to not taking calculus or the required pre reqs so I was going to sign up for Chemical Thinking, a course I believe will satisfy the pre req so Im able to take Chem next quarter, and additionally it told me “this section isn’t open to your class level”, but right above it said open to freshman and sophomore. So currently I am just enrolled in Intro to HDS and intro to stats and analysis. Im a pre- med so Im a little worried my classes aren’t structured well enough

Thanks for the help and listening.

Question Housing installment plan (HIPP) not showing in TritonPay?

Hi! I’m an incoming international student living on campus this fall, and I’m a little confused about the housing payment plan.

My housing + dining charges are already posted in TritonPay, but when I go to the payment plan/installment plan section, I don’t see any option to enroll in HIPP.

Has anyone else had this happen? Does the HIPP option usually appear later, closer to the housing billing/payment deadline, or am I supposed to enroll somewhere else?

I definitely can’t pay the entire housing balance in one payment, so I’m trying to make sure I’m not missing a step 😭
