Announcement Tweet:

We planned to save this announcement for the FPS Games Show, but don't want the hype to get out of control...

WARDOGS Closed Beta. Starting September 3rd.
This is a REAL test. Come break things.

HUGE announcement still to come at the FPS Games Show. We'll see you there.

WHY ISN’T IT JUST OPEN?

On the surface, this might seem like a good idea, if you’re comparing our systems to AAA Franchises, they have very mature and proven systems that have been used on countless iterations of their franchises.

Imagine there is a house fire, you’re a firefighter.. you turn up and your sole job is to put the fire out.. then after the fact when the house has burned down… it’s not until the days after that you figure out what the source of the blaze was.

In this situation, what we’re doing is starting a controlled fire and seeing what burns the fastest to help us prevent and manage a blaze if one does occur in the future. Our stuff, is all new.. and whilst its subject to a lot of automated testing with fake clients… real humans are different. If we open the flood gates, very very few systems hold up to the numbers we hit in our first beta, having 100,000 players spam a queue isn’t that useful to us.. What we want to know is really boring stuff, like “what happens when over 100k players are in the server browser, and everyone is clicking on servers..”

It’s infinitely more difficult to find the cause of an issue if everything is on fire, and that’s the best analogy here.  So, if you really want to give the game a go, pre-order the game and you will guarantee your access.

As always, if it’s not the game for you, please refund it, Steam’s terms of service will allow you to refund a pre-ordered game any time prior to it’s release. We will be letting in more players via the Steam beta system over the weekend, but there is no guarantee you will get in. We have had so many pre-orders at this point that we cannot simply guarantee access to everyone outside of pre-orders until we’ve battle-tested our backend for launch. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1867240/WARDOGS

CLOSED BETA ACCESS / TIMES:

(Source: Steam Store Page)

Pre-order WARDOGS for guaranteed closed beta access 3rd September 18:00 UTC - 5th September 08:00 UTC.

Discussion & Feedback Summary of the recent Dropped Frames podcast that interviewed Wardogs developers

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VGlQ0H9GeE

Development and Early Access

  • Content Strategy (48:09): The game will launch with four maps at 1.0, 4th map will not be available on 9/10 though. They've repeated that they are looking forward to the content that will be coming with 1.0 like the skill tree thing. Wasn't clear to me if that was for sure going to be a 1.0 launch item or if they will bake it into early access at some point if it's ready.
  • Progression/Wipes/Seasons (0:57:30 - 1:00:15): Talked about the meta-game involving cash investment and wagering systems. They may avoid wipes post-1.0, but he didn't sound too sure on that. Season 1 is going to be 1 month, then wipe. A wipe at the end of the season means your money is converted into gold bars and all XP progression is wiped.
    • It's unclear to me what "XP progression wipe" means, not sure if that means your support/pilot/assault/driver/etc levels are wiped, but your wardogs level stays or if it's everything. I'm assuming that after a wipe you will have to unlock everything again (and do the 1-time purchase unlocks per season) as if you just bought the game.
    • However, when the skills system comes out in 1.0, that will not be wiped

Gameplay and Design Features

  • Visual Advantages (17:00): Cohh/JP brought up potato mode and how that may be an advantage for people. Devs said it's only a small number who would "abuse" that and that there are pros and cons to use potato mode versus higher graphics anyway. They also stated that accessibility is more important that the potential "abuse" potato mode could be used for by competitive players.
  • Vehicle Controls (24:54): Discussed helicopter stuff, nothing new here.
  • Squad Coordination (41:00): Developers do not want to encourage forced squad structure and want players to play their way (Probably not getting platoon chat). They did mention potentially adding icons to squads indicating that your squad is primarily focused on building/hot zone/etc.
  • Dynamic Weather (1:12:06): Potentially adding these systems, but not priority. Players did not like fog variant so it's a mix bag.
  • Technical Challenges (1:16:05): Cohh brought up a question about player count and if a higher player count was on the horizon. Devs said that it was already really challenging to get 100 players in the server, so don't expect anything higher than that due to technical limitations.
  • Recon/Spotting (1:44:16): Devs confirmed that they do not want pings visible to the entire team, but noted that recon equipment currently triggers in-game voice lines that communicate locations to nearby teammates.

Note: They did talk about other things, but these felt like the most important

Discussion & Feedback Attention "New Pilots". Last Warning.

Don't listen to the "Veteran" pilots attempting to dissuade you from trying your hand at piloting. Such as in this post: A warning for hopeful new pilots

The chuds are trying to gatekeep the fun they are having. They believe it is in their best interest for there to be fewer pilots. There is always something you can be doing as a pilot, even if you are just pestering the other teams with the minigun bird (you'll have fun while losing money).

Play the game the way you want to and have fun. See you out there.

Guide Daily WARDOGS tips until the game launches #1

Post image
341 Upvotes

Hey guys, I cant wait for Wardogs to launch and just wanted to do something like this while we wait - wanna try to share daily tips until the game launches!

Some tips might be more basic than others, but hopefully something useful in there, since most of us are beginners anyway. If you have your own tips & tricks, share them in the comments, maybe I can include some in the future "tips"!

See you tomorrow, wardogs!

Discussion & Feedback The entitlement over a flight setup is certainly odd

Post image
124 Upvotes

Apparently because this guy has flight gear and is into flying, he’s somehow more entitled than all us peasant pilots who don’t own a $500+ setup or simply don’t want to invest that much into one? Gatekeeping flying wasn’t something I expected to see before the game even released.

What even is this take? Other people getting interested in flying doesn’t somehow lessen your experience or give you ownership over the skies. Some people really do act like buying expensive gear gives them seniority over everyone else.

Edit: To clarify, I made this post because the comment was featured in a Youtuber's video, where the creator and many others agreed with the sentiment. I’m not reacting to some random comment I happened to find.

Meme Comin from game XY and this needs to be added or…

Post image
246 Upvotes

Over the past five or six years, the developers have given this game a lot of thought and sought advice from experts.

I’ve spent 30 hours in the beta and know exactly what this game needs.

That’s why I’ve scraped together my last three brain cells to tell you what’s missing from this game.

If XY isn’t added to the game, it will get boring within two weeks and die out.

Discussion & Feedback Don't let streamers ruin this game

WarDogs has something genuinely great going for it.

King of the Hill is a perfect example.

It’s a concept that hasn’t really been explored by a huge mainstream audience because historically it has mostly existed through mods and niche communities.

WarDogs has a chance to take that kind of gameplay and build something special around it.

What worries me is seeing the same pattern that has hurt other games: a game gets attention, streamers become the loudest voices in the room, and suddenly development starts revolving around whatever creates hype, clips and short-term engagement.

Please don’t make that mistake with WarDogs.

Streamers can absolutely help a game grow, but they shouldn’t define what the game becomes. Their incentives aren’t necessarily the same as those of the people who will still be playing two or five years from now.

I also really don’t understand the hype around Peanut. His style isn't for me at all, and I find a lot of it pretty cringe.

But more importantly, I don't think any streamer—or their fanbase—should be treated as representing the entire community just because they're loud or have a big following.

Milsim and tactical games especially need to acknowledge their core player base. A lot of those players are older, less hype-driven, don't spend their days arguing on streams or social media, and may not be the most visible part of the community. But they're often the people who stick around.

Listen to streamers, sure. Listen to new players too. But don't forget the dedicated players who actually want WarDogs to remain WarDogs rather than chasing whatever happens to be popular this month.

Discussion & Feedback Timeline for significant events

These are the published times as of this post. (I've converted the UTC times to Central Daylight Time):

Firing Range opens Wednesday 9/2 - 12:00 PM, Central Daylight Time. (1700 UTC time) For how long? unknown.

FPS Game Show - Live on Twitch - Thursday 9/3 - 1:00 PM Central Daylight time. Watch it at twitch.tv/thefpsgamesshow. Major Wardogs announcement incoming at this time.

2nd Closed Beta - Thursday 9/3 - 1:00 PM CDT - Saturday 9/5, 3:00 AM CDT

EDIT- Conflicting info has been published about the cutoff time.

Here's screenshots of the conflicting cutoff time.

I also realize that this shows the FPS Game Show and the 2nd Beta starting at the same time. That's the information I've been able to find, although my guess is that the 2nd beta won't start untill after the FPS Game show.

Discussion & Feedback So genuinely excited!

I honestly can't think of when I was this excited by a game. I've not been able to take part in any of the tests, but have watched as much as I could on YouTube.

This game seems to be offering everything. Destruction. A MASSIVE emphasis on team work. Almost hardcore TTK/TTD. Vehicles. Combined arms. Classless play that lets you adapt. And true consquences of sucking (which I will).

So, without even trying the game, I've bought it. Can't wait for 10th September!

Discussion & Feedback The developers should trust their gut on the design that we have enjoyed and the players need way more time with the game for the devs to get the data to actually make changes.

I know everyone enjoyed the game recently and they want it to release but I think everyone also needs to understand that we did not get everything that is planned for the release of the game during the weekend we played. We also only got to play it for a limited time over the weekend, even if you somehow managed to put two days worth of time into the game that's still a relatively small amount of time for a multiplayer shooter.

Largely developers should not listen to the vocal minority that comes into places like this game subreddit and talks about it. If the exclusively listen to what people who actively talk about the game online despite them being very vocal they are always a minority.

The player base of this game may be incredibly passionate about it and that is an absolutely fantastic thing but largely what the people like is the design that the developers have created for it and the way that they have made it a game with a very specific design philosophy, that is what people have enjoyed and what they will continue to enjoy about the game.

If you want an example of why listening to fans isn't always the best just look at the last two weeks and the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 beta. During weekend one a lot of the players felt like the ttk was way too fast and demanded that it be changed as well as various other changes to some of the movement and other things in the game. During weekend too they adjusted all of that. What was the immediate response? Almost every post switch from complaining it was too fast to complaining that it's now too slow. The devs could have stuck with their design philosophies for the game but they decided to try to cater to the feedback from the vocal minority that actively talk about games online instead of just looking at the raw data of what players may end up wanting.

We can already see the potential of this happening with people complaining about things like tanks in Wardogs. I know that I don't speak for everyone and that I'm doing the antidotal evidence kind of thing but I managed to play roughly 20 hours of the game and in that time I saw two enemy tanks and only in a single match. But immediately online and in this subreddit you can instantly see people complaining about the potential for the tanks to be horrifically overpowered, when in reality we don't know what it's going to look like when there are a lot of tanks and people are higher level so they have access to things like RPGs and have a better chance to actively do something about tanks. Honestly and frankly the developers won't even know how overpowered or not anything truly is until there is much much more play testing done within the early access. Where they can then make more larger adjustments based on the actual data they're getting rather than a lot of antidotal feedback.

We enjoy everything that Bulkhead has made, personally I've enjoyed it every game they've made and I've always felt like they were a studio that just needed a chance to get a good player base in their games because everything from Battalion to Pro mod always felt fantastic to play. We need to trust the developers to keep their vision intact and see what it will lead to overall before making larger changes based on the small amount of time players have actively played the game.
