I was a volunteer in the campsite at Reading festival in 2008 and 2009 with a friend. It was exactly like this, a destitute wasteland of inexplicable tent abandonment. As part of the clean up, we went around with a wheel barrow collecting unopened cans of beer, each tent seemed to be a treasure trove for us as 18 year olds. It was all fun and games until he found a cooler box in a tent. Opened it up and inside was a singular, well preserved, human turd.

I was there in '09 and it was chaos, everyone seemed more concerned about drugs and burning tents down every night. Genuinely horrendous experience

Im sure some people were there for music and a good time but that isn't my memory of it

Took my tent home and didnt shit for 5 days so dont look at me....

I was there in 09 and it was horrific. The Saturday night was pure chaos. I remember the field next to mine had flames 15-20ft high from a bonfire made of tents but the fire marshal decided to come to my tent instead and extinguish a fire I had made in a bean can...

Wacken in Germany was also like this. My last time was in 2010 and in the camp site after the last day the fire brigade were just driving from one campsite to the other putting out tent fires. People were stacking up hundreds of tents into a pile and setting them alight. The whole area stunk of melted plastic, it was horrid. I was also there in 2005 and 2007, and it wasn't quite as bad, but still a mess after the last day.

Needless to say I haven't been back to Wacken since, and I instead go to smaller festivals.

Incredibly difficult to enforce I think. Without mass surveillance, how will they know who each tent belongs to? And even if they have video of them abandoning their tent, they then need to ID them and track them down. Then there's the issue of international guests, which make up a huge percentage of these bigger festivals.

In theory I would love it to be punished, but I have no idea how to make that work.

The best "solution" I've encountering at most festivals in Germany is to charge a "trash deposit" with the ticket, and refund it if you brought a full trash bag to a trash point. Deichbrand was clean AF this year after people left

They do this at Summer Breeze and Party San, and last time I went to Metaldays in Tolmin (in 2019 I think?) they also did this. It definitely helps to a degree, but it has to be enforced and the deposit has to be meaningful.

For example, in Metaldays the deposit was only €5 and they accepted the deposit bags when a single empty can of beer was in them. That festival was moderately clean, but I don't think that the deposit bag had anything to do with that as it was just as clean before they introduced it.

You pay for your festival ticket. If you select camping, a 500 [currency] hold is put on your credit card. Each tent gets an RFID tag on arrival where your tickets are checked. They cost next to nothing. Your tent is registered upon entry. If your tent is not registered again when you leave, the 500 [currency] is deducted from your account.

Alternatively, you could do spot checks of cars while leaving the area. Someone has a three day pass with camping and leaves with a nearly empty car without a tent? Boom, 500 [currency] fine for you. Yes, you really DID agree to these terms and conditions while purchasing your tickets. Yes of course you may go back and clean up your (any) campsite and have your fine wiped.

Two ways, just from the top of my head. Definitely not perfect. I bet there would be others and possibly even better ones. People would only need to care.

I went to a festival in Australia where it was normal to bring couches. You had to pay a deposit, they tagged the couch, and you got the deposit back when you proved you were leaving with it.

Granted, tents are more fiddly, but you get the idea.

2008 was the last Wacken I went to. There were so many visitors that year that I want allowed in the stage area to see Iron Maiden, there was just not enough space for everyone. I think I left too early to see the aftermath, but with that amount of people I can't imagine it was good. And it's grown significantly in size since then.

It really just wasn't a good time the last time I went. Tons of other festivals had better lineups better infrastructure and just better vibes. Wacken really only exists based on reputation.

Been to Wacken for the last 3 years: From my experience, the (car) camping sites were extremely clean. Trash got neatly piled up, including trash bags.

No burned tent debauchery at all, sad to say.

Infrastructure in general was very decent. Last year was a bit extreme with the mud, sure, but the management of human masses is ok.

Felt pretty safe, overall.

That sounds good! I guess they've had 20 years to improve the experience, glad they've done that rather than just making it worse year by year like they did on the 2000's.

To be fair I never felt unsafe in any way (although I don't think that's generally a pattern for men), it was just really poorly executed in general. When I realized there weren't enough toilets for everyone at the festival I instantly knew I'd never return.

But yeah, I'm happy that they've seemingly improved since then.

What the actual fuck. I've been going to Summer Breeze the last 4 years which is also Germany, a bit smaller than Wacken, but comparable. And I've never seen anything even hinting at this. Not a single fire anywhere but stage pyro. Sunday morning everyone picks up all their shit and piles trash in the indicated locations (and there's not even all that much of it). They do have their "Less trash, more thrash" poster all over the place, but I thought I was just seeing normal German orderliness.

Must be quite the exception for you then. Went to e.g. Sputnik Spring Break quite a few times and others as well, and during leaving hours, there were quite a lot of fires, someone was even stacking a couch and a fridge on a large bonfire, leaving huge trails of thick, black smoke...

Maybe I just left too early, but I carried my tent around Europe for 2mo after doing Tomorrowland and Wacken then took it back to Australia. Wasn't particularly convenient, and I could of course afford to have just left / replaced it when I needed another, but it's a pretty decent tent. No regrets. This was like 2023. But yeah we the people I camped with at both properly packed our sites.. I did throw out my Wellington boots after about a week though. That was a bit much to carry around for something I'd never use again.

OK, apparently I was reading Reading like reading. I didn't realize Reading festival was a thing, I thought it was reading festival, and I was like, "A bunch of book nerds did THAT?! That's so unlike us." and then I realized I was reading Reading wrong. The drugs was what tipped me off.

I started a book club last year (tea, fluffy white dogs and books), and my third recruit turned out to be a massive cocaine fan and had a free supply and successfully pushed it on my other members. It’s disbanded now but is really only remembered for the cocaine.

Reading is a place in the south of England, pronounced 'Redding'. Every year they do the Reading and Leeds festivals in the north and south of the country. It's the last hurrah before the academic year starts so it attracts A LOT of teenagers. I went to the Leeds festival when I was 19 and I felt relatively old even then.

Back in Leeds 2004 (?) Lynx was handing out free deodorant mini-cans to everyone as a promo. Every few minutes throughout the night, was an explosion as someone's can went up in a fire somewhere. Total chaos.

Went to Reading the year before and was not nearly as crazy. Leeds is something else.

I worked for crew catering in 2018 for many festivals, including Reading. Free beers, new chairs, new tent, a roll mat, anything you want and are willing is there! Some staff started the season with nothing but a backpack and a blanket, finished with a full set of gear haha

I was at southside festival in Germany, probably 2012 and we went to collect left behind tents and beer, just like you. We opened a tent, pristine from the outside, and right in the middle of the otherwise completely clean tent was a huge, fresh human turd. I am amazed how alike our stories are, lmao.

My brother and I did this as he lived locally and he knew someone there who just said turn up and they'll let you work so we did.

We found a ton of unopened cans, a bottle of tequila which later turned out to be piss 😩 and someone else in our group found a dead dog (a terrier) posed in the tent.

The best thing I took of site was a new fangled folding tent and fancy sleeping bag which I took to Tanzania for the lake of stars festival.

I had a buddy who worked cleanup at Bonnaroo every year from like 2006-2010. The ground score he would get from that was insane. Just a ridiculous amount of drugs that got left around the campsites.

When I worked on it in 2000 they had a carling promotion where if you collected about 2500 ring pulls you could get a ps1. Pulled off every ring pull I found and got enough for a ps1 and a football.

My friend worked at reading once and told me a story in a similar vein. He and some other volunteers were on cleanup duties when they found a closed tent with an inexplicable stench coming from it. They opened up the tent and found nothing but a stinking pile of human waste sitting right in the middle. But above it, hanging over the pile, was a sock that looked as though it was filled with something. Curiosity got the best of them and one of the more adventurous volunteers climbed in to grab it. Inside the sock was a large selection of various drugs and a decent wad of cash. The only thing they could think is that some drug dealers at the festival were using the tent to store their stash, using it as a toilet, and using the stench to ward off any possible tent thieves. Absolutely no clue how they ended up leaving it there. Maybe they go caught by security with drugs on them in the festival and didn't go back for it before getting kicked out?

I worked leeds in 08 doing the same thing, had a field day just collecting up cases of unopened beer (cases, not 1 or 2 cans). The condition the site was left in was obscene, looked like a bombed out refugee camp.

A similar thing happened to me and actually I've never quite got over it. I was camping and someone left a wooden box in my tent when I got back. I thought it was a gift.

It had a giant human turd in it.

It changed my feeling about camping forever. Sick kids ,I think it was.

There used to be a heavy metal festival near my small town but it was massively disruptive to just about everything here. Traffic congestion just trying to get to our home, shoplifting like crazy from the one and only gas station (and serious abuse of its bathroom) and of course the fields looked like this afterwards.

Locals volunteered to clean up afterwards and they were allowed to keep everything they found, which was a crazy amount of high quality camping goods. Eventually we petitioned to refuse the permit going forward.

I was there for 2008. With how the Sunday went, I am legitimately shocked you didn't find a human head in there.

For some context, the Sunday had 2 of the back-to-back main stage acts cancel, so there was a period of about 8-9 hours where people had nothing to do.

The car park got set alight, we had a 13 year old ask us for some Ket then about an hour later run through our camp completely fuckass naked because clearly she'd found some, and if your camp had a gazebo it was a legitimate target for arson. There were people going around chanting "gaz-e-bo, gaz-e-bo" and everything.

I also volunteered for post-festival clean-up (although it was for Bonnaroo). A) these groups make you CLEAN UP (literally walked through acres and acres picking up even small small pieces of confetti), B) poop buckets were a thing, C) I was glad to see folks take clean up so seriously.

Unfortunately large events like these do lead to trash but there’s volunteers there to take care of it. That said, everyone can do their part when packing up and leaving.

I was there in 09, and that last night was a warzone. I had no interest in trying to recover my tent by weaving in between the squads of riot police and marauding groups of uninhibited teens trying to steal quad bikes. We grabbed our valuables and headed to the train station as soon as the sun came up. the camping festivals i have been to all look like this afterward. there are lots of reasons, one being something like "you have to be out by 1pm" or something like that. but the amount of free (sometimes brand new) camping gear you can get just by following the rush is amazing.

WTH is a reading festival? In my mind im imagining books. Like how is there so much trash and litter where people are reading books? Like can someone with AI video portray a bunch of frat boys at a party drunk off their asses drinking booze and drugs while holding dungeon crawler carl and explaining the significance of the origin of man?
