Where to dispose of swollen laptop battery?

I have a spicy pillow I need to get rid of. I usually bring hazardous waste to Community Environment Days but I missed them this year due to illness and the remaining few left are too far for me. I don’t drive and don’t think you can even access the city dumps without a vehicle. I live in a building so I can’t organize a toxic taxi pickup. And places like Best Buy don’t accept swollen batteries. I’ve tried asking in a FB neighbourhood group but can’t find anyone doing a dump run or toxic taxi pickup soon.

I can’t think of any other options here. My building had a lithium ion battery fire last year and I’m so anxious to get rid of this thing. Any ideas I might be missing here?

Getting out of Fed Jail, get ID (like licence and OHIP expired). What is first step?

• Upvotes

Sorry, I don’t know where to find this info. Trying to help out (I guess). If G2 license is less than 3 years expired, no OHIP, no passport (felon)….where to start? No sin, or birth certificate cz like felon you know.

I’d say I’m posting for my friend to get info but that makes it seem more like a lie lol.

I guess main qs:

How to get birth certificate
How to get OHIP
How to renew G2 (less than 3 years expired)

Appreciate any help, thanks.

Cheapest Dive Bars

What are the cheapest Dive Bars in Toronto? Or where should I go looking? I'm talking "cash only" cheap. Close to TTC subway is ideal.

Insert name bar & grill type places.

No draft beer, no cocktails type places.

Solo bday trip to Toronto?

• Upvotes

Posted this in the main Toronto group but it got taken down, I was just beginning to get some great recommendations so hopefully can keep it going here. Thanks!

Hi all, I’ve never been to Toronto before and I’m considering taking a solo trip there for my bday soon, to see a concert one night, and have three days or so to enjoy the city. Wondering what is the vibe for solo diners in Toronto, as well as any recommendations, things you wouldn’t want to miss even with a short trip. I enjoy museums and cultural activities, art, fancy cocktails, history, food (veg or fish preferably), shopping, and weird off the beaten path type stuff. Honestly anything that you think would be fun to do alone lol. Please let me know! Thanks!

Recommend one restaurant in Toronto that best represents the food from your home country.

Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and I’d love to hear from you all! What restaurant has given you the best dining experience that represents the food and culture of your home country? Feel free to share recommendations from anywhere in the GTA

Anyone know why TTC is announcing the presence of Special Constables at Bloor-Yonge Station?

• Upvotes

I've heard it a few times now on Line 1 northbound approaching Bloor-Yonge TTC station. The announcement basically says there are Special Constables at the station and we can approach them for assistance. Just curious why they started doing this.

What’s your personal Toronto overrated/underrated?

Pitchfork used to do a YouTube series I liked called Overrated/Underrated and I miss it now. So I thought I’d pose the question here:

Which restaurants, cafes, bars, stores, hangouts, neighbourhoods, etc in TO would you consider to be the most overrated or underrated?

Where can I practice opera?

• Upvotes

I live in a Condo and just have these 1 hour lessons where I can sing freely once a week. I am having trouble finding space. My neighbours are upset cause opera is very loud and Toronto condos are literaly shoeboxes.

What do I do with my cat?

I recently rescued a cat that was abandoned after a neighbour of an acquaintance moved out. Apparently he left the cat outside of the building and the cat kept coming back waiting for him.

The acquaintance gave it for adoption in a group and I took the cat home. Her name is Nix šŸˆā€ā¬›

2 months later I discovered she is pregnant. It’s too obvious now and she might give birth anytime.

I’m not allowed to have more cats in the house I’m renting as they might charge me extra fees if they find out I have cats (that was the only house I could find and I just signed my lease, I know that’s illegal).

What do I do with Nix and the kittens?

Edit: yes I can wait 2 months to start giving the kittens into adoption

Are you allowed to smoke cannabis at the RBC amphitheatre in the smoking area

Me and My Wife are going to Wu-Tang final chamber concert. Wanted to know a quick couple things I understand we’re allowed to bring a small personal amount of cannabis with us, but are we allowed to smoke it inside the smoking area and what is the best way to catch a lyft after the concert, my app says it’s picking me up after the concert Parking Lot 2, Ontario Place, Parking Lot 2. Also, My Wife can’t walk very far.

Is there a way to get Google Maps to reflect the road closure from Victoria to Bay on Queen?

I tried sending edits noting it’s closed for construction until 2028 and they’re rejected each time. It’s bugging me as it messes up my google map commute routes. I’m not a fan of Waze.

Best place to view the night sky to see Stars and possibly the Galaxy?

I haven't seen the stars since I was a kid, I realized you can also see the galaxy and possibly some planets if you go to some places with no light pollution. And good places around the city that can make this possible?

Give me your place with the best cocktails in the city?

Somewhere that’s has great but worth it cocktails. This doesn’t mean it has to be dirt cheap, but you should feel like it is worth the money.

Food banks downtown?

Hey so I’m really embarrassed to put this out there, but my partner and I need a food bank to tide us over for a couple weeks until I start work on the 8th. I spent my last $5 on some cat food and we have nothing but rice and dry pasta in the kitchen but we’re low on that since we’ve been eating that for a couple days. What are some food banks in the downtown area? What do they usually give? It has to be near downtown since I live in the village and will be walking

Edit: wow thank you to everyone for reaching out and providing these resources. These moments of community really remind me of how great this city can be

Puppy Socialization Classes

Hi, we’re getting a golden retriever puppy in about 5 weeks so we’re canvassing for puppy socials! Can anyone recommend? Has anyone tried the petsmart puppy classes? How was your experience?

Keep in mind that our pup wouldn’t be fully vaccinated yet as he would be only about 8-10 weeks

Thank you!

Looking for good restaurants for a solo diner

Going to Toronto in between travelling for a few days on September 19-21 and gonna be doing Toronto solo :)

I’m looking for good recommendations for breakfast and dinner spots that are designed well for solo diners. I don’t mind eating alone and don’t get any sort of anxiety etc I’ve been doing it for years and honestly love eating alone. It’s an experience just as much as going with someone or a group.

I’ve come to realize some restaurants are very well designed for those few solo diners and some are let’s say.. not so ready to give that experience.

Would really like some suggestions!

Initial impressions? Equinox - King West

Today is the grand opening at the King West location! What were your initial impressions?

Keeping in mind that things are still settling in place, the gym overall feels quite nice. A lot of nice equipment that I haven’t seen in standard commercial gyms. It was definitely busy around the 7:30am-8:30am period, but it trickled down once people started leaving for work.

My current minor gripes:
- Free-weight benches feel pretty cramped
- The 45 lbs bumper plates are massive and awkward to handle
- There doesn’t seem to be any bins for the tissue papers at the men’s change room(?)
- The equipment sanitary wipes take awhile to dry off. But tbf, I’d rather have it sanitized properly than none at all.
- The rental lockers are a lot smaller and narrower than what I expected. I’ll likely just use it for my gym shoes, so I have less to carry.

Still finding my way around the equipment and getting a better sense of the layout. Overall, I’m pretty excited to have this as my home gym and maybe work from their lounge area.

Settle a Debate: Scarborough Pronunciation

Context: My friends and I were talking about something and I mentioned Scarborough. They asked why I was pronouncing it like ā€œScar-bur-ohā€ instead of ā€œScar-bro,ā€ and I said because that’s how it’s spelled. They were INSISTENT that I’m the one saying it wrong and that the ONLY correct pronunciation is ā€œScar-bro.ā€ So I searched it up and found that locals/people who live in the GTA usually pronounce it ā€œScar-broā€ rather than fully pronouncing it as ā€œScar-bur-oh.ā€ I said, ā€œOh, that makes sense and it’s kind of like Toronto being pronounced ā€œTor-on-toeā€ vs. ā€œTronnoā€ā€ They immediately said that’s not the same thing at all. They are VERY ready to die on the hill that there is absolutely no debate over how Scarborough is pronounced and that everyone (or at least the vast majority of people) says ā€œScar-bro.ā€ But I swear I’ve heard it pronounced both ways multiple times.

So please settle this: How do you pronounce Scarborough? Is ā€œScar-broā€ basically universal in Toronto/GTA, or do you hear people say ā€œScar-bur-ohā€ too?

Where to sell broken cellphones?

• Upvotes

I have some samsung and iphones from the 2010s that are damaged beyond use in various ways. Are they valuable to anyone for parts or something? Could I sell them to a random cellphone store, if so, any recommendations?

Or is it something I'd have better luck on kijiji / fb marketplace?

I'm considering keeping them if it's a lot of trouble for practicing hardware repair, I have ipods I'm keeping for that reason, but selling them would be good for buying tools. Thanks.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations for inpatient programs for depression/trauma/CPTSD? Private or public?

I've been making plans the last couple of days, nothing immediate but before the end of next year because there are things I need to out in place before for the person I'm caregiving for. Realized this probably isn't normal.

I've tried finding reviews but every review seems to leam more negative though I suppose that's the nature of the beast. But I also don't know how much of that is formed reviews vs. willing reviews.

Another problem is that every one seems to focus heavily on substance issues which I dont have.

I also don't fully know of many. With the quick search saw Homewood (which I'm leaning to), CAMH, and EHN. But I'm willing to hear about any, in or out of Ontario, and money isn't an issue.

Thank you, I really appreciate it.
