Ask r/Formula1 Anything - Daily Discussion Thread

Welcome to the [r/formula1](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/) Daily Discussion / Q&A thread.

This thread is a hub for general discussion and questions about Formula 1, that don't need threads of their own.

Are you new to Formula 1? This is the place for you. Ever wondered why it's called a lollipop man? Why the cars don't refuel during pitstops? Or when Mika will be back from his sabbatical? Ask any question you might have here, and the community will answer.

Also make sure you check out our guide for new fans, and our FAQ for new fans.

Are you a veteran fan, longing for the days of lollipop men, refueling during pitstops, and Mika Häkkinen? This is the place to introduce new fans to your passion and knowledge of the sport.

Remember to keep it civil and welcoming! Gatekeeping within the Daily Discussion will subject users to disciplinary action.

Have a meta question about the subreddit? Please direct these to the moderators instead.

Day after Debrief 2026 Dutch GP - Day After Debrief

Welcome to the Day after Debrief discussion thread! Now that the dust has settled in Zandvoort, it's time to calmly discuss the events of the last race weekend. Hopefully, this will foster more detailed and thoughtful discussion than the immediate post race thread now that people have had some time to digest and analyse the results.

Low effort comments, such as memes, jokes, and complaints about broadcasters will not be deleted since I do not have that power, but I will be very disappointed with you. We also discourage superficial comments that contain no analysis or reasoning in this thread (e.g., 'Great race from X!', 'Another terrible weekend for Y!').

Thanks!

Photo 2026 Italian GP Trophies

"The three drivers who will step onto the podium on Sunday, together with a representative of the winning team, will celebrate the outcome of the race by lifting FRAGILE, a trophy conceived as a work of art by the artist duo vedovamazzei.

The Italian Grand Prix trophy is commissioned each year from Italian artists as part of a multy-year project, now in its sixth edition, initiated by Pirelli, the race’s title sponsor, in collaboration with the Pirelli HangarBicocca Museum of Contemporary Art.

For the 2026 edition, the commission was awarded to vedovamazzei, the duo formed by Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino, whose artistic practice combines irony with an ability to capture the contradictions and complexities of reality. Their works often reinterpret everyday objects, highlighting the world’s paradoxical aspects."

News What's gone wrong for this former F1 title contender

This is a companion article to the latest Race podcast, in which they take aim at the newer fans using overly simplistic and uninformed terms like "washed" to describe drivers whose style doesn't mesh with the current configuration of cars. The same people who declared Hamilton and Norris washed last year are doing it for Piastri and Russell. Alonso's words, about how new fans don't understand F1 and distill it down to team sports analogies that don't fit, are made especially relevant by rule change years.

The narrative around F1 has - utterly coincidentally - gotten worse since Covid helped grow the sports popularity, but seeing last year's drivers who were written off thriving and drivers who were praised last year being declared washed is a dizzying ride into thoughtless oblivion.

Throwback Lewis Hamilton completed the ultimate grand slam in Monza in 2015– he topped every single free practices and every qualifying sessions, got the fastest lap, led all laps, and won the race!

I reckon the other one who achieved the grandslam on Monza as well was Senna in 1990 (without topping the free practices and qualifying sessions), hence Lewis’ achievement was the ultimate grandslam. :)
