News What's gone wrong for this former F1 title contender

This is a companion article to the latest Race podcast, in which they take aim at the newer fans using overly simplistic and uninformed terms like "washed" to describe drivers whose style doesn't mesh with the current configuration of cars. The same people who declared Hamilton and Norris washed last year are doing it for Piastri and Russell. Alonso's words, about how new fans don't understand F1 and distill it down to team sports analogies that don't fit, are made especially relevant by rule change years.

The narrative around F1 has - utterly coincidentally - gotten worse since Covid helped grow the sports popularity, but seeing last year's drivers who were written off thriving and drivers who were praised last year being declared washed is a dizzying ride into thoughtless oblivion.

Throwback On this day 80 years ago: Achille Varzi on Alfa Romeo 158 wins the 1946 Turin Grand Prix, the first Formula 1 Grand Prix

This footage is from the 1946 Turin Grand Prix (officially called III Gran Premio del Valentino or I Gran Premio di Torino), held on the street circuit at Valentino Park. Run on September 1st, it holds a specific place in motorsport history as the very first Grand Prix contested under the new International Grand Prix Formula regulations, also called Formula A and Formula 1, in anticipation of the ruleset’s official introduction for 1947.

The race was characterized by heavy rain and high attrition. One of the most memorable moments happened on lap 10, when Tazio Nuvolari miraculously managed to bring his Maserati to a halt on three wheels after losing a rear wheel. Up front, Alfa Romeo completely dominated the weekend with their 158s. The win was actually decided by the pit wall on lap 50, when they issued strict team orders. A board was held out reading "1. Varzi; 2. Wimille," explicitly instructing Jean-Pierre Wimille to let his teammate Achille Varzi pass for the victory.

A fascinating detail about this event is how it revived a pre-war tradition made famous by the Tripoli Grand Prix. The race was tied to a national lottery, where the starting grid was determined by twenty drawn tickets. The lucky holder paired with Varzi's car ultimately took home a 25 million Italian Lira jackpot.

"The three drivers who will step onto the podium on Sunday, together with a representative of the winning team, will celebrate the outcome of the race by lifting FRAGILE, a trophy conceived as a work of art by the artist duo vedovamazzei.

The Italian Grand Prix trophy is commissioned each year from Italian artists as part of a multy-year project, now in its sixth edition, initiated by Pirelli, the race’s title sponsor, in collaboration with the Pirelli HangarBicocca Museum of Contemporary Art.

For the 2026 edition, the commission was awarded to vedovamazzei, the duo formed by Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino, whose artistic practice combines irony with an ability to capture the contradictions and complexities of reality. Their works often reinterpret everyday objects, highlighting the world’s paradoxical aspects."

Discussion How has car development (post cost cap) changed in terms of car performance upturns vs the past ?

Was thinking of brawn gp recently, and whilst there isn't any good source of how the car developed in season (if it even was), my question is.

how were they able to bring a car so competitive it lasted a whole season without big upgrades?

They only gained sponsorships well into the season and barely even had budget for spare parts.

in a modern f1 season how are teams able to catch up to the front (red bull 2025, mclaren 2023) whilst red bull, ferrari or mclaren in 2009 struggled so much in the past despite having better financial backing and the necessary technical knowledge in order to catch a team like brawn.
