Discussion Freezing problems

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello, I have been using Linux Mint for over a year now and I am extremely happy with it. However, I have a small problem with freezes, especially when I have several heavy sites open and use them at the same time. I have changed several browsers in an attempt to solve this, but I have not been able to. I am currently using Chrome and Mozilla, I am testing and daving, but the result is the same. I have tried all kinds of browser and graphics card settings and all kinds of commands/combinations for power. The picture shows the parameters of my desktop computer. My card is very old and I think these freezes are due to it.

Can you tell me how to fix this, or should I just continue with this compromise until I buy a new card?

Also, would xface solve the problem?

Any advice is infinitely valuable.

Thanks!

2015 MacBook Air with an Intel AX210 Wifi Card!

Linux Mint Cinnamon on my 2015 MacBook Air with an upgraded Intel AX210 wifi card. All hardware works out of the box except for the HD FaceTime camera. Since the camera uses PCI instead of a USB device, I found a fix in the Linux Mint forum, which involves running a script that downloads and installs the OEM drivers. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=445168

Support Request Linux help

So i did a stupid thing which i dont even know why i did while decreasing my partition so i could put some gigabytes on a separate smaller windows partition I did the stupid thing and x’ed out of gparted while it said something like ‘moving partition x to the left and copying x amount of gigabyte’ I don’t really remember what it said but it was something along those lines. Now I’m guessing it’s over so I just wanted to know if there is anything I can still do or should do at this point.

I don’t know how to add a photo in here so I’ll just send it in the comments if that works

Edit: this might seem dumb but I can’t upload a photo on here nor the comments and if I just don’t don’t know how please someone tell me on how to add on using your phone

Support Request Problems with booting linux mint

I am currently trying to boot linux mint 22.3 for the first time. I have made a bootable Udisk with a verified ISO for cinnamon mint 22.3 (through etcher). However when going to the boot menu my usb drive is nowhere to be found. instead it gives my SSD and HDD together with a few options of several USB-types and CDrom all of which do absolutely nothing. i currently have windows 10 on my ssd and booting any of the options just brings me back to windows 10. The only exception is my HDD. when booting it my screen shows several dots in the upper lefthand corner before giving me an error and saying that i need to input the correct disk with no way of leaving that screen. When i restart my pc it shows me the linux boot menu (grub i believe but im not sure entirely) giving me a countdown of autoboot and none of my inputs works. after the countdown ends it launches a flashing and dimmed linux mint desktop. After restarting again im back in windows though it runs much slower and i cant input anything for the first minute. I only boot linux mint this way when using the back usb ports on my pc. when using the front ports it just goes to windows instead. after my pc is restarted it splits my usb drive into 2 partitions instead of one. one remains recognized with all the files the other becomes empty and unrecognized.

I have quick boot off and cant seem to find secure boot anywhere in the BIOS settings.

My Processor = Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, 3310 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

My motherboard = Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3

also i have checked and the usb boots fine on a different laptop

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Support Request Kernel Panic after clean install

Hello dear mint Community,

I am a new mint user and have problems setting it up. After a clean install of mint 22.3 cinnamon I was asked to update various packages. In the end an error popped up stating that different packages could not be installed. Then I was asked to reboot. While rebooting the screen went purple and showed "Kernel Panic".

What I did: Create a new bootstick, check it via the checksum and freshly install mint. Same errors occured. Did that 3 times.

Thanks in advance for your help. Please tell me what information would be helpfull.

I did not include the error code since reddit doesn´t let me something that long :/

EDIT: I am running it on a Macbook Pro Intel

Support Request Problem with nextcloud

Hi everyone,

new user and frankly quite overwhelmed as soon as things get a bit complicated.

Here's my problem :

I installed linux mint mate on an old 2009 laptop. It works great ! Windows was lagging and bloaty and mint is smooth ! I'm a maths teacher and I wanted to use this laptop in my classroom to type my lessons in LaTeX. Since I work at school and at home, I installed Nextcloud (the French Department of Education (aka l'Education Nationale) has it for all of the teachers). Again, it worked great on my wifi.

But as soon as I got to the school, Nextcloud didn't want to synchronize. There's a proxy for this network so I put it in but apparently it can't connect to my account because there is no certificate whatever that means...

Any idea how to solve this ?

Thanks in advance !

Configuring Intellihide for my polybar was such a hassle icl 😭️🙏️

It felt so refreshing to be on Mint since the very first day. Of course, it wasn't a magic bullet due to the low RAM I had but still miles better than having that Micro$hit Windows, which would stutter for atleast half an hour after boot while I'm using any app. I couldn't even think about customising it.

Fortunately, I didn't face any issues which were too much of a strain on my brain. That's not to say, I did not face any significant ones.

Issues I fixed

  1. Frequent audio pops/crackles with Easy Effects: As Gemini advised, I tried disabling power saving and increasing quant values/buffer sizes, but they only helped to some extent. After I grew frustrated enough, I scoured forums and any issue I could possibly find which was similar to my case, but it always lead me to a dead end. After that, I decided to move my entire audio stack (PipeWire + wireplumber + Easy Effects) to a newer version through piperoll. That finally seems to have fixed nearly all the underrun issues I was having, but I still have issues where it would make a pop sound whenever I seek or pause. I'm guessing things should work fine on native after Mint 23 arrives.
  2. "Bluetooth not working": This one was very funny, actually. blueman doesn't have robust enough error handling when it comes to missing icons. Due to some misconfiguration/missing icon files on my installed theme (Orchis), the GUI was crashing constantly. The bluetooth was working fine the entire time.
  3. YouTube stuttering: enhanced-h264ify fixed it. My hardware does not have support for newer codecs.

Aside from this, it has been mostly smooth sailing so far!

Is there a way to set a default for where my audio gets put out? it just swaps it around whenever I restart my PC.

(I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm new to this)

Laptop for my son

I am looking for a second hand, very affordable laptop where I can install Mint Cinammon for my son. I am utterly clueless about models, brands, specifications. Any tips on which models I could look for, or on what are the specs I should look for? Any feedback is welcome.

My favorite thing about Linux is that all my fuck-ups are my own. On windows, its always a broken update, a data leak, whatever. But on Linux, I can only blame myself. I'm in control. Sure, its scary to have the power to make your computer hate you, but I prefer it that way. I'd rather fuck up myself than deal with someone else fucking up for me.

After my successful test with the Forbidden HP, I installed Cinnamon on my 7290. It’s taking some time getting my head around the terminal, but I love the flexibility in the OS. I really don’t think Windows has a place for me at the moment, but time will tell whether everything I need is supported on the platform.
