Idk, elden ring ran silky smooth on my Xbox X no lag no problem except online because my internet is crap. If my experience was average I think there is absolutely nothing to complain about there.
I did most of the game with no co-op in offline mode.

I cap most graphic-intensive games to 30 on my PC simply because it keeps the GPU at a frosty 50-60 degrees and makes less way less fan noise as a result (plus it lets me have higher settings than if I'm trying to get a smooth 60+ fps).
At the end of the day if the frame rate is stable there's really nothing wrong with 30 fps for single-player open world games, or any non-competitive game really. It's when the game's capped at 30 fps because the system is struggling to run it in the first place and has constant lag spikes that it's an issue, but then that's a problem with the performance, not with the concept of a 30fps experience.

u/PhatCatTax 6h ago
I keep mine capped at 31fps just so that I can come here and brag that I'm superior to CarlLlammaFace. Ive waited a long time for this day.

30 FPS is like okay. For the switch 2 it's fine, it's a handheld, I wouldn't expect more, but intentionally doing that to yourself is wild when you have the option to get better frames. I'd drop my resolution and whack an upscaler on before going below 60 frames.

u/ahferroin7 4h ago
Exactly this. If it’s actually a stable 30 FPS with almost no variance then it is indeed fine for a majority of games. It’s when you have random drops or spikes in the frame rate that 30 FPS becomes an issue.
2
u/I_think_Im_hollow 7h ago
Tbf, the PS4 version was the one that ran better on release. The overall graphics were worse, but it was way more stable than the PS5 version.

The comments section seems to be zeroing in on the content of the comic, but the infuriating thing here is that someone was so lazy, they used AI to create literal stick figures.
You don't need to be a master artist to make something this simple, just look at rage comics where the scratchy eyebleeding quality of the art was part of the gag

u/Edikus_Prime 7h ago
30 fps is tolerable until you play a game that involves watching attack animations like a hawk.
13
u/Skhemattos 4h ago
Bloodborne is one of my favorite games of all time, locked at 30fps. Would I prefer 60? Absolutely. Is it a deal breaker? Nah, it's worth dealing with it.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (10)4
u/NMe84 7h ago
Even then it's perfectly tolerable. 30 FPS gives you a frame time of 33ms, which is well below the average human reaction time of 200-250ms. Unless a game requires frame-perfect reactions, 30 FPS is really not that bad. And it's easier to handle a game that targets and hits 30 FPS consistently than one that targets 60 FPS but has lots of frame drops at random times.
13
u/SunsetCarcass 6h ago
That's like saying playing at 5 FPS (200ms) is fine because we only react at 200ms (which isn't entirely true). Some attack animations can be REALLY fast, and having more FPS lets you see the start of an attack frame faster.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)30
u/Namisaur 6h ago
I don’t care for 60fps for most games, but from my experience it’s not about the reaction time. It’s the smoothness of motion that allows you to anticipate actions and the feeling of responsiveness between what happens on screen and the button you press. Coming from playing rhythm games, 120fps made it a lot easier to anticipate the timing of the next note and also feels more responsive when I hit a certain button/key.
6
u/HiddenSecretStash 5h ago
Yeah, higher framerates also means less input lag, so probably a combination of both smoother movement and faster control response. The control response is noticeable even with a game running at 60fps on a 30fps screen

u/TWOITC 7h ago

It amazing people use AI for the most simple things. Back in my day people put zero effort into Rage Comics and that's still more effort then this
3
u/KennKennyKenKen 6h ago
Well it's not ok but what can be done?
Like GTA being all digital
Or charging $100 for the full edition of the game?
They can do whatever because the game isn't impacted by online complaints
It sucks, and it shouldn't be the norm but they can strongarm whatever choice they make because they're too big to fail

16
u/-Mobile-Nothing- 7h ago
It is okay if it's actually because of decade/generation defining technical fidelity and not just because the devs are lazy and don't want to optimize

The original post sounds like a goomba fallacy
People who wouldn't actually care or notice 30 vs 60 fps are the really casual player base, which gta brings in in DROVES
16
u/Leon3226 7h ago
I still can't wrap my head around people justifying that in 2026 for any game at all. Like, people were making fun of 30 fps in 2012 and earlier, but then it was kinda understandable because the hardware was considered shit. TWO GENERATIONS of consoles passed, almost 15 years, and people still defend their privilege to play in 30 fps. Wtf? I will probably log in on Reddit in the year 2077 to see people discussing new release for PlayStation 33, and saying 30 fps is perfectly fine, and nobody needs more

THIS! Last week 2 different studios were getting flamed for this.
It’s a AAA $100 game FFS!
60 FPS should be a guarantee!
3
u/AirFrierMachine 4h ago
You can't magically make the game 60FPS without MAJOR sacrifices to NPC AI/density, traffic density, resolution, reflection quality and overall visual fidelity.
Aiming for 60FPS would have made this game feel fundamentally stripped down in comparison to what we'll get.
2
u/ImNotSkankHunt42 4h ago
I get that, I do. It’s a compromise but part of optimization is to give the consumer agency over these things. I’m not too worried, the game looked good. How far to render buildings and objects, particle density, reflections, the water alone looks like it needs a dedicated GPU to render physics and textures.
If they don’t have that yet is an incomplete game being sold at $100.
But having been burned by CyberPunk I do fear we’re being primed for disappointment after such a marvelous reveal. They could be misleading us and even reaching 30 is not a given.
We’ll see.

There is a loud minority of players that actually complain about locked FPS, since GTA reaches a way larger audience than most other games the fact that the complainers are a minority becomes more obvious than usual.
4
u/Party_Virus 5h ago
I've never quite understood why people are upset with 30 fps. Film runs at 24 fps and no one is bitching about that. Like, yes you can tell the difference between 30-60 frames, and games are quite a bit faster paced than most shows or films with more happening in them, but I've never had an issue with 30 fps for a single player game.

u/WJMazepas 6h ago

The console can either handle the game or can’t. And its a 6 year old console with a weak ass cpu. Blame the fucking console

I don’t have a console but Elden Ring doesn’t look graphically impressive enough to run at 30fps, whereas GTA 6 does. Not only does it look graphically more impressive, but the emergent systems will probably way more intricate than whatever Elden Ring has, which is enemies spawning in the same location, and moving back and forth, and that’s it. Like I’m a huge FromSoftware fan and I love their art direction, but let’s not act like their technical prowess is anywhere close to Rockstar. In fact, their tech is often the most criticized aspect of their games, often being dated in various aspects. Their games are hard carried by art direction, and quality in terms of lore, presentation and combat. But not tech.

30 FPS is unacceptable in YearX is such a weird take to me. Why is it unacceptable now when it was fine in the past? Yeah sure computational power has become better, but for games like GTA6 they decided to use that additional power for better graphics while sacrificing framerate. This balancing act between graphics and performance will ALWAYS be a thing, no matter what year.

u/SadSecurity 5h ago

→ More replies (4)3
u/SicknessVoid 5h ago
I have no idea how that is the conclusion you draw from what I said. No, I'm not saying we should just be fine with everything. In fact, I was saying the opposite. People expect their games to look better and better but don't understand computational power is a finite resource. A 30 fps game would simply look worse running at 60 on the same hardware. People are already somehow complaining that GTA6 doesn't look as good as they expected. The only expection is games that just run badly because of bad optimization, but that does not seem to be the case for Elden Ring and GTA6 as far as we can tell so far.
